DIMAPUR, FEB 5 (NPN): In a significant political development, Nagaland Congress, which was founded in 2016 as a splinter group of the Indian National Congress, merged with the National People’s Party (NPP) on Monday at NPP office, Walford, Dimapur. Talking to media persons at NPP office, Na-

galand Congress president, Nillo Rengma said that the merger was aimed at strengthening the hands of young and dynamic leaders under Conrad Sangma, who he said was “the face of North East.” Rengma strongly felt that under Conrad’s leadership the North East will improve and the party will also be able to highlight the issues of the North Eastern people in the parliament.

Rengma also revealed that the NPP was holding discussions for a pre-poll alliance with the NPF although a final decision was yet to be taken. NPP president, Ato Yepthomi was confident that the merger would make the NPP party stronger so that it could put up a strong front against other parties. He said that the national party NPP was mobilizing itself in North East India with a vision to work for the people. He said none of the other MPs from the region were raising their voices in the Parliament for the people, except for Conrad Sangma. Yepthomi also asserted that the North East had many issues which needed a common platform through which they could be highlighted, and according to him, NPP will serve as that common platform.

jivani’, the animal UID scheme is part of a larger programme for the dairy and fisheries sectors. These sectors are crucial if officials are to get serious on doubling farmers’ incomes by 2022, a target set by the government. Economists say this is nearly impossible from cultivation alone because a majority of Indian farmers can’t achieve economy of scale as they work on small parcels of land. In a budget speech seen as pro-poor, finance minister, Arun Jaitley on Thursday announced a Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund and an Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund worth Rs 10,000 crore. WOKHA, FEB 5 (NPN): District unit of Janata Dal (United) Wokha, through JD (U) 38 A/C Wokha president, Woshomo Pius Ezung, filed a complaint on Monday with the Deputy Commissioner of Wokha against a rival candidate and his supporters claiming “excessiveness of arson and vandalism.....to dismantle forthcoming elections.” The complaint in this regard came after a Sunday night incident in Wokha village where supporters of the rival candidate allegedly indulged in arson and vandalism at the house of one Yanphamo Humtsoe, father of JD (U) candidate for 38 A/C Wokha, Mhonbemo Humtsoe. According to reports, six vehicles were set on fire and two houses were vandalised in the incident. An FIR in was filed at Wokha Town Police Station on the same night and four persons were reportedly arrested. However, on Monday noon, a mob gathered outside the police station demanding release of the four arrested. When contacted, SDPO Wokha informed that a thorough investigation was underway. The JD (U) complaint to the Deputy Commissioner had also demanded that the rival candidate be made “liable for prosecution and showcause as to why he should not be barred from contesting”. It stated that arsons, physical assaults, intimidations had vandalism to properties had been perpetrated, with the tacit knowledge of

the rival, by “his goons since September 7, 2017”. Among other things, it demanded that under such circumstances 10 polling stations be declared “hyper sensitive” and sec 144 Cr.Pc be promulgated in the entire jurisdiction of Wokha Village “to instill public confidence and prevent further escalation” of violence. KLH appeals: Kohima Lotha Hoho (KLH) has issued a fervent appeal to the Wokha Village Council, under the leadership of its chairman, to firmly control the “few miscreants who are tarnishing the good name of the village and the name of the candidate for whom they may be in favour.” A press release from KLH chairman, Nchumbemo Tungoe and general secretary Thunglamo Ovung said that the hoho was pained and concerned over the reported violence at Wokha village. Expressing sadness and regret, they said that Wokha district had been named after Wokha village and thus it was expected to serve as the source of inspiration of democratic values and standards of discipline for all the villages in the district. The incidents of violence that spring up time and again defiles “all of us”, the press release lamented. KLH asserted that the miscreants should be informed that such acts of violence will only bring defeat for their candidate. Condemning the acts of unwarranted violence, KLH appealed to the District Administration to arrest the involved miscreants and book them under relevant sections of the law.

40 million cows to get UID number

NEW DELHI, FEB 5 (AGENCIES): Just like the 12-digit Aadhaar number for every Indian, the Narendra Modi government is set to assign each of the country’s milk-producing cows a cheap, unique identity (Cont’d on p-7) card or UID, first proposed in 2015. According to a Hindustan Times report, deliverable targets in this year’s Union budget show Rs 50 crore for the project to cover 40 million cattle. A dairy department official, requesting anonymity, said the agriculture ministry, which will implement the programme, has already acquired the UID technology that comes with a cheap, tamper-proof polyurethane tag containing the cow’s biological details such as “He tried his best to be breed, age, sex, height and popular by backing Clean special body marks. cattle population. The agriculture ministry’s Rashtriya Gokul Mission claims that milk from indigenous cattle was healthier due to higher content of “A2 allele of beta casein”, a protein. It seeks to upgrade commonplace breeds using elite indigenous stocks such as Gujarat’s Gir, Rajasthan’s Sahiwal and Rathi, Deoni, Tharparkar and Red Sindhi of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. Both projects are part of “output” and “outcomes” targets set in the budget, which will be monitored by the NITI Aayog. India has about 45 million “in-milk”, or milch, cattle. “Animal husbandry gets only 5.4% of the overall agricultural ministry budget despite livestock being the most critical sector for most marginalised farmers,” Kavitha Kuruganti, a farm activist said.
