BJP to go ahead with pre-poll alliance

JD-U snaps DAN ties; to contest State BJP issue party tickets to 20 CANDIDATES elections alone

Correspondent/Staff Reporter

KOHIMA/DIMAPUR, FEB 4 (NPN): In what was a near-rebellion by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district units of Nagaland, who threatened to defy the pre-poll alliance with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) which was announced by BJP in-charge Nagaland and MoS Home, Kiren Rijiju on Saturday in Guwahati, the party unit presidents have turned around and agreed to abide by the pre-poll alliance but said they would await a response to the representation sent to national party president, Amit Shah. State BJP general secretary, Eduzu Theluo informed Nagaland Post that the party will stand by the directive of the party high command. Soon after the pre-poll seat sharing alliance was sealed between BJP and NDPP, Theluo shot off a letter to the party chief, Amit Shah, on behalf of the district units and morchas, expressing their resentment against pre-poll alliance.

NITI Aayog facilitator for Act East Policy: Kant G U WA H AT I , F E B 4 (PTI): NITI Aayog would act as a “facilitator and catalyst” for the North Eastern states in implementing the Centre’s Act East Policy, a top official of the government think-tank said today. “We will provide full support in providing advocacy to the North Eastern states in the implementation of the policy and the Aayog’s role will be primarily to act as a facilitator and catalyst,” NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said. He was speaking said at the plenary session on North East Indian Economic ties with ASEAN and BBN (Bhutan, Bangladesh and Nepal) countries, on the second day of the Global Investors’ Summit here. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has categorically said that the North East would be at the centre of the Act East Policy, whose three key features are connectivity, culture and commerce, Kant said. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is driving the PM’s Act East Policy and if the region progresses, “we will be able to lead a vast section of the population towards prosperity”, the CEO said.

Theluo said that the state BJP unit had submitted the representation, urging Amit Shah to review the agreement between the two parties and also on issue of tickets. He said for the time being 20 names, which were announced on Saturday evening, will be cleared for filing nominations. To queries on the resentment from as many as 40 aspiring candidates, many of who were confident of winning, Theluo said the national party leader was also apprised on the matter yet a decision could not be taken at the state level since the final decision rested with the party high command. He also said some of the party workers and candidates were not happy with the pre-poll alliance deal, yet, since BJP was a national party, members had to follow the central directives. Theluo also informed that as per the request of the national president, Nagaland BJP president, Visasolie Lhoungu will not contest for the February 27 polls from 11-Northern AngamiII A/C. He said Amit Shah

requested Lhoungu to take care of the party organization and to not contest the election. Meanwhile, BJP state unit issued party tickets to all the twenty candidates on Sunday evening. A senior party leader informed Nagaland Post that after the announcement of the pre-poll seat sharing alliance agreement with NDPP, the party has gone ahead and distributed tickets to all the 20 candidates. The party leader said the BJP-NDPP alliance was “going strong” and that both the parties were confident that they would form the next government in Nagaland. BJP Party tickets were issued to – Dimapur 1 A/C, Tovihoto Ayemi; 4-Ghaspani-I, N. Jacob Zhimomi; 13-Pughoboto, Dr. Sukhato A. Naga Accord is nowhere to be seen: Rahul mocks Modi ahead of polls

NEW DELHI, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party released its list of 20 candidates for the February 27 Nagaland Assembly polls, Congress President, Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Narendra Modi over the Naga accord. He said the Naga Accord signed by the prime minister was nowhere to be seen yet. “August 2015, Modi claims to create history by signing the Naga accord. Feb 2018, Naga Accord is still nowhere to be found. Modi ji is the first ever Indian PM whose words don’t mean anything,” Rahul tweeted. The Framework Agreement was signed in August, 2015 by Government of India and NSCN (I-M) to end the insurgency in the region. Modi said the accord did not just mark the end of a problem but the “beginning of a new future” in the northeast region with which he shared “deep” relationship. R a h u l ’s c o m m e n t came in the backdrop of the demand made by various Naga civil society groups (Cont’d on p-2) and political parties for the

DIMAPUR, FEB 4 (NPN): In a major development, Janata Dal (United) or JD (U) has announced its decision to pull out of the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) and also declared that it would not enter into any pre-poll alliance with any party for the ensuing February 27 Assembly elections. A press statement issued by State Janata Dal (United) president, Senchumo NSN Lotha and party’s election campaign committee chairman, Y. M Humtsoe said the party would contest the forthcoming general election on its own and field its candidates in constituencies, irrespective of which party’s candidates were in the fray. The JD (U) par ty also asserted that it was confident of winning a “reasonable number of seats” in the forthcoming Assembly elections without any pre-poll alliance and that it would deliver an “exemplary statesmanship” through its elected representatives.

Rahul Gandhi (File) postponement of the Assembly polls. Earlier this week, he had criticised PM Modi for his ‘unilateral decision’ creating roadblocks in the implementation of Naga accord. The Congress scion said PM Modi’s Naga accord was like his demonetisation and GST decision with no clear idea of what he was doing. “Nobody has understood what the Prime Minister had signed, (or) whether he had signed. This is his style. This (Naga accord) is similar to (November 8, 2016) demonetisation and implementation of Goods and Services Tax at midnight,” Gandhi told journalists. “Modi called up then Congress president Sonia

Gandhi one evening and told her we have solved the Naga problem and signed an accord. Soniaji called me and told what Modi conveyed to her. She told me to check with the then Congress Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur to find if they were aware of the accord and were consulted by the Prime Minister,” Gandhi recalled. It may be mentioned that the BJP became the first political party to release its candidates’ list for the Nagaland polls, while the regional parties, tribal groups and civil society organisations in the state are demanding a solution to the vexed Naga political issue before the election.

Imposed elections not CCNTHCO leaves to parties to Japan to scale down security advisory for travellers to NE acceptable: NSCN (I-M) honour Jan 29 joint declaration DIMAPUR, FEB 4 (NPN): NSCN (I-M) has reiterated its stand against the forthcoming general elections saying that the “imposed election is not acceptable to the Naga people.” A press statement from its MIP sought to inform the Naga people that they fully supported the “prudent decision of the Naga people” for a solution and hence to forgo the elections. NSCN (I-M) said that they would stand by this decision till the end. It appreciated the wisdom of the CCNTHCO, the Churches, tribal bodies, apex Naga organizations including the Naga Hoho, Naga Council Dimapur, Naga Mothers, NSF, ENPO and others for their decision to stand by the people’s will. NSCN (I-M) said that it would uphold the political rights of the Nagas and sincerely endeavour to “negotiate an honourable political settlement based on unique history and situation of the Nagas and the 3rd August, 2015 Framework Agreement between the Gol and the NSCN.” It further stated that the NSCN (I-M) would not betray the responsibility and trust reposed on it by God and the Naga people. It further cautioned that serious consequences, as per its Azha, shall be imposed on any national worker found defying the decision of the Naga people.

DIMAPUR, FEB 4 (NPN): With all hopes for a poll boycott now lying in tatters with virtually all political parties reneging on their January 29 commitment to not issue tickets, Core Committee of Nagaland Tribal Hohos and Civil Organisations (CCNTHCO) has stated that it was up to the parties whether to honour their pledges or not. CCNTHCO in a statement said it was not the sole authority with powers to force anyone to refrain, be it a political party or an aspiring election candidate, from participation in the electoral process. Stating that every Naga was part and parcel of the social and political mess and that none could escape from it, CCNTHCO said it was the bounden responsibility for every Naga to voluntarily contribute towards a solution to the Naga political problem and none should hinder the processes of negotiation. It also stressed that Naga leaders particularly and sensible Nagas must never

depend on someone else to clean the Nagas’ dirty linen nor should anyone irresponsibly adopt a “holier than thou” posture at the cost of the common man in this venture. Narrating the sequence of events in the run-up to the January 29 joint declaration, CCNTHCO said every political party that ruled the country in the last seven decades had always left the onus of solving the Naga political issue on the next government. It said the Nagas too missed the opportunity to have a better political set-up despite six rounds of negotiations with New Delhi in 1960s. However, today, the leadership of the country had shown the political will to resolve the Naga issue and signed the Framework Agreement with NSCN (IM) on August 3, 2015, besides signing the preamble for negotiation with Working Committee of NNPGs on November 17, 2017, CCNTHCO pointed out. Cancer may be preventable with vaccines

NEW DELHI, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): The dread and fear of the fatal disease, cancer, has always been there. More than its consequences and the changes it causes in day to day life, its treatment, which includes chemotherapy and radiation, is what brings chills down the spine, The Times of India report stated. But it may soon have an easy and painless prevention as researchers and health experts at Stanford University have developed a compound which when injected into a tumor helps

in destroying it. Not only this, the good news is that this vaccine can also kill all the other cancerous masses present in the body. This compound has been first successfully tested in mice. After this successful experiment, it may soon be available for human trials. This compound is a combination of two agents. These agents help in stimulating the immune system and spark body’s reaction in mice. Eventually, it destroyed cancer cells not only where the vaccine was injected but also far from

the injection point. The treatment is now considered successful and according to researchers, will soon be available for human trials. Initially, it will be tested on 15 patients, suffering from lymphoma. As researchers have got the positive result from animal testing, they hope to see encouraging results from human testing too. They also revealed that out of 90 mice, who had lymphoma, 87 were cancerfree and that too after the first treatment. What’s more motivating is that remaining three also got rid of cancer after the second shot. This new method targets specific immune cells that can be reactivated to fight cancer cells. Ronald Levy, professor of oncology and lead author of the study said, “I don’t think there’s a limit to the type of tumor we could potentially treat, as long as it has been infiltrated by the immune system.”

GUWAHATI, FEB 4 (AGENCIES): In an effort to encourage tourists to visit northeast, Japan has decided to scale down to the lowest level the security advisory issued to its citizens for travelling to the North Eastern region, Japan’s ambassador to India, Kenji Hiramatsu , said at the Global Investors’ Summit here. Pointing out that the lowest security advisory level is issued to citizens travelling to Delhi at present, Hiramatsu said, “We are thinking of lowering the advisory

issued to Japanese citizens travelling to the northeast to level issued for Delhi now. This will definitely encourage more Japanese tourists to visit the region. Kenji Hiramatsu indicated that the decision has been taken in view of improvement of the law and order situation. Japan considers the North East to be very important for building people-topeople contacts and furthering cultural and business relationships, the ambassador said
