LH asks Lotha MLAs to resign KOHIMA, FEB 3 (NPN): Lotha Hoho (LH) on Friday demanded all Lotha legislators to step down from the present NPF-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland government headed by chief minister T.R Zeliang. It may be mentioned that the Ao Senden and the Angami Public Organization had also demanded their respective legislators to resign. LH in a statement issued by its chairman Mhao Humtsoe and general secretary Er. Mhondamo Ovung said when legislators say that they have been elected by the people, they should also not forget that they have been elected for the people’s welfare and not to torture the people. Therefore, LH said the electorate had the right to ask them to step down. LH also questioned the chief minister as to why the state government officials were being made as scapegoats, while the elected members were the ones who sit behind and give out orders to the government servants. Lotha Hoho reminded the Zeliang that the government officials involved in the election process like the SEC, administration and police etc. were just carrying out their assigned duties.

Rio reacts to NPF youth wing DIMAPUR, FEB 3 (NPN): Lok Sabha MP and former chief minister Neiphi Rio has hit out at the statement by the NPF Youth Wing, for accusing him of being responsible for the present situation in Nagaland. In a statement, Rio described the NPF Youth Wing statement as “shocking and totally false”. Instead, Rio pointed out several instances of failures of the state government and the NPF leadership which chose to disregard and listen to the voice of the people. Rio reminded that when he was chief minister in 2012, tribal hohos and NGOs, vehemently opposed ULB elections on the plea that it would infringe upon Article 371A. He said his government heeded to these voices and through the Select Committee headed by T.R.Zeliang as chairman and Dr. SHurhozelie as member, tabled a resolution not to conduct ULB elections as it would infringe upon Article

371A. After his departure, Rio said the state government intended to hold ULB elections but civil societies, tribal hohos etc again opposed it and issued appeals and ultimatum on the government against the move. He said tribal hohos even issued warning on the government on the eve of the special assembly session but they fell on deaf ears. The assembly then revoked the September 22,2012 resolution on November 24, 2016 against the wishes of the people by accepting Part IXA of the constitution for 33% reservation. Despite all the appeals and resolutions adopted by various Naga society groups against ULB elections, Rio said the state government went ahead in issuing notification. In response the massed responded with peaceful protests and agitations he said. Instead of initiating dialogue (Cont’d on p-8)

Actions not Yechury questions PM NTAC demand CM’s resignation political: Senden To, The Honourable Chief Minister Nagaland about the Naga accord DIMAPUR, FEB 3 (NPN): Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) of Ao Senden has responded to NPF Youth Wing press statement, by clarifying that the entire episode that led to burning down of NPF office Mokokchung and effigies of chief minister and NPF president unfolded, when tribal bodies raised their voices against state government decision to conduct ULB polls by nullifying the January 30 agreement signed between JCC and state government in the presence of NBCC. In this regard, JCC of Ao Senden convener A. Bendangnukshi Jamir and co-conevner N. Bendang Jamir asked NPF Youth Wing or for that matter anyone, who wanted clarification on the issue, to approach the office of JCC. Further, the committee clarified that whatever move or action which unfolded in the aftermath, should be known by all that the Aos stood firm for the rights of the Nagas “without any political colours or inclination to anybody.”

Subject:- DEMANDING RESIGNATION Sir, Ever since the ULB election was put into motion, the people of Nagaland have been voicing against the controversial Municipal and Town Council Act. As the Chief Minister of the state, you should have been more conscientious to the voices raised so that meeting point could evolve. Instead, you became arrogant and insensitive to the sentiments so expressed by the tribal organisations. In connivance with few women leaders and few of your colleagues who have been determined to have frontal confrontation with the public, the popular voice of the public was set aside. Your attitude and undermining the established situation is the basis for violence in which two youths were killed and several others were injured by police firing. Mr. Chief Minister, you have miserably failed, you have the audacity to treat the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) as nothing and you have considered Naga life as equally nothing. You have totally lost sense of responsibility as the leader of the state. Since you are solely responsible for all the mess created in Nagaland today, we have unanimously resolved to demand you to step down immediately. Your demitting the office you hold now is the only option to pave the way for normalcy and peace to return. Yours faithfully, (K.T. Vilie) Convenor, NTAC (C.T. Jamir) Secretary, NTAC

NEW DELHI, FEB 3 (IANS/AGENCIES): After violent protests in Nagaland against ULB elections, CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury on Friday questioned the Modi government over the Nagaland peace accord. “Nagaland is burning. Fair to ask what happened to the ‘Naga Accord’ (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi signed with great fanfare on live TV,” the Marxist leader tweeted. Expressing concerns over the situation in some North Eastern states, Yechury accused the ruling BJP of being focused on power grabbing. “Besides Nagaland, Manipur troubled. Situation in Assam volatile. Security concerns in Arunachal Pradesh. And BJP focused solely on grabbing power.” As the violence in Nagaland gets mentioned in the national media, the ‘Naga Peace Accord’ signed by the Narendra Modi government has come in focus with CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury questioning the efficacy of the agreement in the troubled times. Meanwhile, the state press also criticised the mainstream national media, particularly the electronic media about not projecting the incident correctly.

DIMAPUR, FEB 3 (NPN): Naga Scholars Association in Delhi has expressed pain over the events leading to the deaths of two Naga youth and loss of properties following the announcement of ULB elections with 33% reservation and said the situation appeared to have gone out of hand in which the state government became an integral part of the conflict. NSA president Dr. Zuchamo Yanthan and general secretary Dr. Gideon Shadang in a joint statement expressed strong condemnation over what was termed as “irresponsible role” of Nagaland government for the utter mismanagement and authoritarianism leading to violent situation in Nagaland.” They urged upon the state government to listen to the voice of the masses and also appealed to Naga civil society group and individuals to restrain from violence. withstanding rights, Naga women, particularly NMA have crucial roles to play towards peaceful solution to the problem and pave way for mutual understanding on the issue.

Misrule snowballed into uprising: NPCC

Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) has held NPF leaders responsible for the past 14 years of NPF “misrule”, which it said has snowballed into public uprising. NPCC through its media cell also expressed deep concern over the volatile situation that has gripped the state and also the “continued blame game by the NPF leaders instead of addressing the situation at hand”. NPCC also described the February 1, 2017 cabinet decision to completely withhold ULB election across the state as a case of ‘too little too late’. It said the

loss of two precious lives along with many injured, huge damage to public property and the constant fear psychosis inflicted on the people could have all been avoided had the state government listened to the voice of the people instead of confrontation. On January 12, 2017, NPCC said it had urged the state government to postpone ULB election to develop consensus. However, it said the government disregarded the wishes of the people. Alleging that the government has lost all moral responsibility to be in power, the Congress demanded the state government immediately step down and call for early election. NPCC also demanded that the state government announce adequate compensation to the families of those killed and injured during the public agitation. (Cont’d on p-8) K Y M C
