In an address to a huge cheering crowd at the ‘Namaste Trump’ event here, the US president, who arrived with his wife Melania and was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the airport, said his administration is working in a “very positive” way with Pakistan to crackdown on the terrorist organisations and militants that operate there. While the chemistry between Modi and Trump was fully evident as the two leaders shared many hugs and heaped praise on each other in front of nearly 1,00,000-strong enthusiastic crowd at the new-look Motera stadium in the Prime Minister’s home state, the traditional and colourful welcome left the US President impressive.

“Five months ago, the US welcomed your PM at a giant football stadium, and you welcomed us at the world’s largest cricket stadium. Thank you for spectacular welcome. We will always remember this remarkable hospitality forever”, Trump said. During the first leg of his two-day trip, Trump talked about India’s rich culture and extraordinary diversity repeatedly. India is always admired around the earth as the place where millions of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Christians and Jews worship side by

Earlier, thousands of people greeted Trump and his family as the presidential cavalcade criss-crossed the city roads leading first to Sabarmati Ashram and from there to Motera stadium. On his part, Modi welcomed Trump to “world’s largest democracy” and said a “new history” was being created. IMPHAL, FEB 24: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Monday stated that the ceasefire agreement between Government of India (GoI) and NSCN (I-M) was not extended till Manipur. Singh said this while responding to a calling attention motion moved by opposition bench in the house during the ongoing budget session regarding release of an NSCN (I-M) member arrested by the Assam Rifles in Senapati district. Opposition Congress MLA, K Ranjit Singh sought an explanation from the state home department regarding the “hasty” release of the NSCN (I-M) cadre arrested on February 21. The committee further expressed its total dismay as to how the government had arbitrarily chosen to introduce 1979 as the cut-off year. As the ILP came along with statehood in 1963, there cannot be a separate cut-off year for ILP enforcement in the State. DESAM accuses police of Meghalaya CPI(M), Cong joint panel wins Sharjeel Imam’s police leaking names of informers budget session Tripura Bar Association polls from March 13 remand extended by 4 days Correspondent

Guwahati, Feb 24 (PTI): A local court on Monday extended by four days the police remand of JNU student Sharjeel Imam who was arrested on charges of sedition and brought to the state last week. Imam was brought to Assam from New Delhi on February 20 and produced in ourt which had initially sent him to four days’ police remand, they said. Upon the expiry of his police remand, he was on Monday produced before the Kamrup (Metro) Chief Judicial Magistrate. The student, who came into the limelight during the ongoing protests at Shaheen Bagh against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, was arrested from Bihar’s Jehanabad on January 28 for allegedly making inflammatory speeches at the Jamia Millia Islamia University and in Aligarh. Imam was slapped with a sedition case after his speeches went viral on social media wherein he was heard

Sharjeel Imam

allegedly speaking about Assam’s possible secession from the country in the wake of the CAA. A case under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has been registered against him in Assam. On February 18, the Delhi Police had named Imam as an “instigator” in its charge sheet filed against 17 people in a case related to violence during protests against the CAA at New Friends Colony near Jamia

Millia Islamia last year. Meanwhile, Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government is keeping a tab on the developments related to Imam’s interrogation. On reports claiming that Imam had contact with AIUDF supremo Badruddin Ajmal for some years, Sarma told reporters, “I have seen it in the media only.... If there is any connection found between them for unlawful activities, we will take necessary action.”

IMPHAL, Feb 24: The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has Monday accused Manipur cyber crime police of making public the names of informers who passed information regarding the leakage of Class-XI question paper. Alleging that the leaking of the names of the informers, which, as per rule are to be kept secret, was not only violation of rights of the informers but also a threat to their life, the association said. DESAM has also lodged a complaint with the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) in this regard on Monday. The student body also demanded that befitting action be initiated to those officials and personnel of the cyber crime police station (CCPS) of CID (CB). Addressing a press conference at DESAM office in Imphal, general secretary L Lamyanba alleged that the CCPS has leaked the names

of the informers to the media and exposed it instead of safeguarding the names. While demanding appropriate action against the officers and personnel behind the leaking the details of the informers, DESAM also asked the government to compensate the informers for violating their rights. The general secretary admitted that the information regarding leakage of the question papers prior to the scheduled exams of the subjects was informed by the volunteers of DESAM to Council of Higher Secondary Education Manipur (COHSEM), the authority conducting the Class-XI exam in the state. After the information was received, COHSEM authority immediately investigated into the matter and the information was found to be true. In the follow up action, COHSEM cancelled further conduct of the exams while announcing that question papers of five subjects were leaked ahead of the exam dates.

Police foil rally targeting Manipur Assembly complex Correspondent

IMPHAL, Feb 24: Police on Monday foiled a rally which targeted Manipur Legislative Assembly complex demanding inclusion of Sanamahi Laining in the list of minority religions of India. Sanamahi Laining (or Sanamahism) is an indigenous religion which was followed by the Meiteis of Manipur before the advent of Hindu religion. Monday’s rally targeting the Assembly complex to draw the attention of the house of the ongoing budget session was blocked by the police at KhuraiLamlong Bridge. After they were prevented from carrying out the rally further, the protestors converged near Khurai Lamlong Bazar to discuss further course of action. The rally was organised by Committee on Inclusion of SanamahiLaining in the list of Minority Religions of India’ (SALAIMIREL). Talking to reporters SALAIMIREL convenor-

Mutum Churamani pointed out that the six minority religions of India currently are Islam, Sikhism, Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism and Christianity. Churamani said that the committee has been putting forward the demand for ensuring religious right to the followers of Sanamahi Laining especially the Meeteis/Meiteis. He claimed that under secretary of MOBC department of the state had already sent recommendation to the secretary of Union ministry of minority affairs. The demand had already reached the Centre and now it is the responsibility of the state government to take up necessary works for pressurising the Centre for inclusion of the SanamahiLaining in the list of minority religion of India, he said. He then urged the state government to mount pressure on the Centre so as to ensure inclusion of SanamahiLaining in the minority religion list of India.

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS): A mini roadside library in Mizoram’s capital Aizawl has gone viral on social media. The post was shared by an IFS officer Parveen Kaswan with the caption, “Now this is what every city must copy. #Mizoram’s capital #Aizawl has a couple of these tiny roadside libraries. Libraries are the best investment for nation build-

ing. Northeast showing the way.” This roadside library encourages reading habits and helps in building community by providing access to exchange free books. The new initiative received appreciation by social media users, with Twitter users flooding the micro-blogging website with their reactions. “Beautiful isn’t it?! A few years ago, citizens in Di-

mapur pulled in resources to open the first public library! I still visit children libraries and get books. I missed out on so many amazing books as a child, now I balance my life with books meant for kids from 4 years till 100!,” a Twitterati said. “Indeed, very amazing initiative. Now, I don’t want to wait to visit Aizawl as soon as possible,” another Twitter user said.

GUWAHATI, Feb 24 (Agencies): Wildlife and environmental activists in Arunachal Pradesh are enraged that the BJP government in the state will build an industrial corridor that will pass through a tiger reserve. The activists alleged the East-West Industrial Corridor road, which will connect Seijosa in Pakke-Kessang district with Bhalukpong in West Kameng, would pass through the Pakke Tiger Reserve (PTR). The ambitious 692.7km-long road will run along the foothills of ArunachalAssam border. The detailed project report (DPR), which has been already approved by a high-powered committee, proposed an elevated corridor at the tiger reserve, to be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs.2,550 crore. Earlier, a divisional forest officer at the PTR had reportedly suggested

the authorities to avoid construction at the PTR citing Forest Conservation Act (FCA) and Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The FCA disallows survey, investigation or exploration of any kind by any agency inside a national park or wildlife sanctuary. The argument over an elevated corridor at the PTR was that it can ensure the free movement of wild animals. The state government felt the project would enhance connectivity and develop the state’s foothill areas into economic and industrial zones. However, environmental activists are not amused. One of them, TanaJorjo Tara, said the project would be in violation of the Forest Acts of 1940 and 1972. “The government said the elevated corridor at the PTR won’t harm the animals in any manner. But won’t materials be carried through ground? Also, trees

have to be felled and pillars erected from the ground. Petrol, diesel and other materials will be transported. If there is an accident there tomorrow, there will be a loss of natural habitat. There will be other side effects as well. That’s why we are opposing,” Tara said. He said the government could take a different route. When it is building such

Aizawl, Feb 24 (PTI): The Mizoram government has been making efforts to resolve the long-pending boundary dispute with Assam and has asked the Centre to review the inter-state border, the Assembly was informed on Monday. In reply to a query of Congress legislature party leader ZodintluangaRalte, Home Minister Lalchamliana said the state government had sent a letter to the Union Home Ministry praying for a review of the border on December 15 last year. He said the government is making efforts to resolve the dispute at Zophai area near Bairabi town along the state border with Assam. The last border standoff between the two states had taken place at Zophai in March 2018 when members of a students’ body of Mizoram attempted to construct a wooden resting shed there. The Assam Policemen had resisted their bid and many students were allegedly injured. Lalchamliama said a core committee constituted by the state government in May 2018 to study the boundary issue has collected some important documents related to the border. In July last year, Chief Minister Zoramthanga had said, without elaborating, that his government evolved a strategy to resolve the border dispute. Several dialogues held between the two states since 1995 to resolve the border dispute have yielded little result.

Trump and Modi show

W

hen the two leaders of the world’s largest democracies met for the second time on Monday at Ahmedabad, both visiting US President Donald Trump and India’s prime minister Narendra Modi, will seek to reinforce the growing friendship between the two countries and also their personal rapport. Modi rolled out the red carpet for Trump, beginning with a road show from the airport to a visit to the Mahatma Gandhi ashram near Sabarmati then on for the public reception of 1,25,000 at the new cricket stadium-Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium- the world’s largest cricket stadium. It may be recalled that in 2019 Modi was in Texas where NRIs organised a huge reception ‘Howdy Modi’ attended by 50,000 NRIs. Trump attended the event as a ‘guest’ of Modi. That itself indicates the personal rapport between the two leaders. Donald Trump is on his first trip to India since assuming office and will look at the visit as an opportune moment to take stock of the bilateral relationship. The relationship reached a high point during the Indo-US nuclear accord of 2008. It was passed and remarkably by a lame duck session of the US Congress in the last days of the George W. Bush presidency.President Bush made that historic decision in his second term to cut through this most difficult knot in Indo-US relations. The Indian government also under Dr. Manmohan Singh had to face severe test as its main ally, the Left withdrew support and voted with the BJP against the Indo-US nuclear deal during UPA-I. The US worked hard to win approval of western nations for the deal on the premise that New Delhi agreed to abide by key nuclear safeguards and commitments. Earlier during President Obama the relationship was marked by some theatrical flourishes, including reciprocal visits by Obama and Prime Minister Narendra Modi but these did not move forward as there was no major agreement on the economic nor on the defence and security fronts. Both Trump and Modi are skilled in the business of political showmanship, with a keen eye for the vulnerabilities of established elites, and stoking nativist fires. Ideologically both are on the same plane -Trump has far-right instincts, rather than a developed ideology, whereas Modi belongs to a Hindu sub-culture identified as Hindutva of the RSS. With the ascent of Trump, India received greater importance in actions such as the renaming of the US Pacific Command as the US Indo-Pacific Command in 2018, along with an explicit nod to treat India as a greater focus of strategic interest for the US. Unlike Obama, current President Trump has not been afraid to challenge the rise of an authoritarian China, embarked on a full-fledged tariff war with it in an effort to pry concessions on market access and intellectual property, among other areas. Both Trump and Modi will be striking hard bargains on trade, an issue that is as vital for both countries as their shared resolve against Islamic terrorism and challenging China’s military expansionism. However, the biggest challenge in fostering closer Indo-US ties is on atrocities to religious minorities in India. This was eloquently raised by former US president Barack Obama during his second visit after Modi took over power in 2015.Unless Modi takes serious note of the red-herring of anti-minority rhetoric, all his efforts to assuage the USA would fall apart.

DailyDevotion The Delight of Sacrifice I will very gladly spend and be spent for your souls… —2 Corinthians 12:15 Once “the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,” we deliberately begin to identify ourselves with Jesus Christ’s interests and purposes in others’ lives (Romans 5:5). And Jesus has an interest in every individual person. We have no right in Christian service to be guided by our own interests and desires. In fact, this is one of the greatest tests of our relationship with Jesus Christ. The delight of sacrifice is that I lay down my life for my Friend, Jesus (see John 15:13). I don’t throw my life away, but I willingly and deliberately lay it down for Him and His interests in other people. And I do this for no cause or purpose of my own. Paul spent his life for only one purpose— that he might win people to Jesus Christ. Paul always attracted people to his Lord, but never to himself. He said, “I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some” (1 Corinthians 9:22). When someone thinks that to develop a holy life he must always be alone with God, he is no longer of any use to others. This is like putting himself on a pedestal and isolating himself from the rest of society. Paul was a holy person, but wherever he went Jesus Christ was always allowed to help Himself to his life. Many of us are interested only in our own goals, and Jesus cannot help Himself to our lives. But if we are totally surrendered to Him, we have no goals of our own to serve. Paul said that he knew how to be a “doormat” without resenting it, because the motivation of his life was devotion to Jesus. We tend to be devoted, not to Jesus Christ, but to the things which allow us more spiritual freedom than total surrender to Him would allow. Freedom was not Paul’s motive at all. In fact, he stated, “I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren…” (Romans 9:3). Had Paul lost his ability to reason? Not at all! For someone who is in love, this is not an overstatement. And Paul was in love with Jesus Christ.

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference. ~ Winston Churchill

I

f there are two prominent genes wired into the human body, it is their love for betting and an indifference to the suffering of others. Both these genes combine when it comes to forcibly racing animals. The rich go to horse races. Horses are bred to run faster. Many of them have drugs and hormones injected into them. Many have their windpipes surgically altered to bring more air so that they can run longer. They are whipped mercilessly by their jockeys. And, if they fall and break a leg, they are shot. The ones that start losing races are sold to laboratories to be used as living vaccine producers (they are injected with poison and the blood is extracted after the poison has matured). Some of them are taken by their millionaire owners to the hills, where they are sold to people who rent them to tourists and make them go up and down the hills till they die of bad feeding and exhaustion. Or, they are sold to slaughterhouses where they are turned into dog food and glue. Their flesh is exported to France and Japan, where it is considered a delicacy. One study on injuries at racetracks concluded that one horse in every 22 races suffered an injury that prevented him from finishing a race, while another estimated that 3 thoroughbreds die every day. Strained tendons, or hairline fractures, are often not diagnosed and the damage goes from minor to irreversible at the next race.

On an average 24 horses die per week on the racetrack due to drug overdose or injuries. And I am not counting the horses that were killed by trainers and stud farm owners as part of “ selective breeding”. For the spectators at the races, the horse is the least relevant part : what is more important is the clothes they wear, the alcohol they drink and the money they make or lose. The poor have cattle races. These are mainly in Karnataka on the day of Makara Sankranti (when bullocks are raced through water), Maharashtra and Punjab. Slow moving cows are tied together and have steel rods and balls poked into their anuses to make them run. They are whipped to increase their speed. I have photographs of the small spiked iron balls that are tied to the whips. Some races use a horse and bullock tied together. Both die. The drunken spectators are usually landless, but this is done in the name of farmers’ celebrations. These are illegal, so the races usually happen early in the morning. Pigeon racing is a big business. The biggest is the Mac Arthur race where pigeons, whose legs have been tagged with numbers, have to cross three seas in a brutal 600-kilometre race in the Philippines, during which competitors face water, predators and kidnappers who set up fishing nets to catch them. The pigeons fly low over water to avoid wind, and many die when hit by waves, or succumb to exhaustion. Many are shot or eaten by larger

Nagaland Post, Dimapur TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2020

There’s nothing sporting birds. The casualty rate is 90%. Those that survive fly to their coups in Manila. Their owners retrieve the tag and call it in to race organisers, which is how victory is determined. The Philippines have 300 clubs, but Belgium (which started this terrible “sport”), India, Taiwan and China are not far behind. On an average 60 percent of the birds get lost, or die as a result of extreme weather, predators, electrical lines, hunters, or exhaustion. Races that are particularly fatal—where only a minuscule percentage of birds makes it home— are referred to as “smash races.” Birds who aren’t considered fast enough, and aren’t wanted for breeding, are killed by suffocation, drowning, neck-breaking, gassing, or decapitation. Most racers kill hundreds of pigeons before they find a suitable racer. Another racer told investigators that when starting out in pigeon racing, “The first thing you have to learn is how to kill pigeons.” Greyhound racing is the main industry in Macau, where tourists go to gamble, drink and watch these poor animals, who have been beaten, starved and locked up, run for their lives. Those

that lose a few races are killed. Lakhs of dogs have been killed over the years. This terrible torture is replicated in America where greyhound racing started in the early 20th century, and generates millions of dollars in gambling revenue in the states that still allow it. Dogs live in cages and are kept muzzled by their trainers at all times. Many exhibit crate and muzzle sores and suffer from infestations of internal and external parasites. Although their thin coats and lack of body fat make them extremely sensitive to temperature, greyhounds are forced to race in extreme weather conditions - from subzero temperatures to sweltering heat. Owners regularly kill greyhounds who become injured, grow old, or are deemed too slow. Others die on the track. Some dogs die during transport from one racetrack to another. The cruelty of the industry is finally being exposed, and the number of spectators is declining, but that means that the conditions the greyhounds are being kept in have worsened. Official raids done on greyhound retirement homes, which are mandatory by law, have found the bodies of thou-

sands of dogs that have been “ retired” by their caretakers with a shotgun. The Buon Don elephant races in Vietnam are held in March every year. Elephants have to run for a mile through land and water. Two mahouts sit on each elephant, to poke iron sticks into the soft part of its head and whip it hard with large sticks to make it run faster. Thousands of people watch and cheer as the animals are hit. The elephants race at a speed of 25 mph. Animal activists are calling for a ban. India has stopped There is one race in Nepal which should be stopped, but the disease has now spread to Afghanistan which, whenever it takes a respite from its favourite “sport” of killing human, invents one that uses animals. The Middle East has too much money and too little to do for it. So, they have horse and camel races. So do Pakistan, Mongolia and Australia, and the events are used as tourist attractions and for legalized betting. Camels are whipped severely to run at speeds upto 65 kms an hour. Children have been abducted and trafficked from poor countries like Bangladesh to be jockeys. They are kept in slavelike conditions and given small amounts of food, so that they are as light as possible. They are strapped to the animals and whips placed in their hands. Many children have died during the races. While most countries have bowed to international pressure and

banned child jockeys, the organisers have invented a new torture for the animals. Children have been replaced by robotic whips. The owners can whip the racing camels via remote control. The whipping has increased almost three times, because the owner doesn’t have to use strength to lift his hand, he can simply push a button. Camel deaths have gone up exponentially. The biggest camel race in Australia is in Queensland. People come to watch the camels run, but mainly for the betting, market stalls and other entertainment . Now, Australia has shot 10,000 camels in one day and lost one billion others (yes, one billion, not counting insects) in forest fires, so whether these races will continue remains to be seen. The Australians will probably find another species to race and gamble upon. After all, the world may come to an end, but we will be cruel and greedy to the last. In some sports the rider is pulled by animals. Harness racing, dogsled racing and the ancient sport of chariot racing are all equally vicious. There’s nothing sporting about forcing animals to risk -- and often lose -their lives so that someone can win a prize, a title or money. Only the most vicious and degraded human beings are happy with the suffering of a helpless being. These are probably the same people who watch child porn. Evolving business models of coworking in India

onducive and productive workspaces have become the need of the hour when it comes to providing the right environment to employees and helping them foster growth. With the introduction of coworking spaces and their acceptance in the country, the industry has changed notions about what a typical workspace is and what the functions of a healthy work environment should be. Where earlier the industry was less agile to the changing market and demographic forces, it is now understanding and incorporating elements that can expand and contract operations quickly and give a range of options to its workforce. The coworking segment in India has seen impressive growth in recent years and is now a catalyst of sorts for modern workspaces. Growth has been witnessed in the number of operators as well as the flexible space take-up in top seven cities of India. The growing popularity of coworking spaces can be seen by the spike in share of coworking in total office leasing. The share of coworking in total office leasing spiked up to 14 per cent in 2019 from 8 per cent in 2018. The growth in the sector is attributable to the rapid scaling up of existing players and entry of new ones with innovative business models. There has been adoption

of innovation and hybrid offerings by the coworking operators. Their networking events, community initiatives and creative designs promote a sense of community and encourage collaboration. The flexibility intertwined with superlative amenities and a community driven ecosystem are attracting occupiers to coworking spaces. These spaces offer unique facilities such as gymnasiums, creche services, food courts etc. that is making them popular. Who all are occupying the available space? Apart from SMEs and startups who look for cost effective and flexible options, coworking spaces have been gaining traction amongst large corporates too, due to the positive impact of such workspaces on employee productivity. A survey by JLL showed that 40-45 per cent of coworking demand emanated from big corporates, followed by SMEs which contributed to 35-40 per cent of the demand while 15-25 per cent demand came from start-ups. Several corporates are now moving into coworking spaces to provide an appealing work environment to their employees and flexible leasing, along with added membership benefits that reduce the expenses of running an office space by approximately 15-20 per cent. Coworking spaces provide a holistic approach which consciously and cost-effectively

aim to address the employee engagement and real estate needs of all companies, big and small, as well as real estate owners and landlords. Slow but gradual acceptance: It is interesting to note that the global sentiment with regard to coworking has had a limited impact on the growth of this segment in India so far. Coworking business models in India are evolving considering the altering requirements of the prospective occupiers. Operators are shifting their focus by offering more closed office spaces and fixed seats as opposed to hot desks to cater to the needs of corporates for privacy and business performance. The trend is gaining popularity as the majority of the demand from occupiers is for cabins or closed spaces that have dedicated areas exclusively for the companies who have taken the space from the operator. Hybrid spaces are a win-win concept for all the stakeholders as this model is benefitting both the operators and the occupiers. Coworking operators get the advantage of securing relatively longer term commitments on leases and therefore create a more stable ecosystem for their businesses. On the other hand, occupiers enjoy dual advantage of the flexibility of a coworking space along with private offices and dedicated spaces.

Another concept that is gaining popularity is the built-to-suit centres in which customised office space as per the requirement of clients is being developed. The trend of ‘Managed Offices’ is gaining popularity. In this model, the coworking operators undertake real estate planning for their clients by searching a suitable space for them according to their requirements, refurbishing/ developing the space as per their specifications and managing the space entirely for their clients. The operators meet all the real estate requirements of the occupiers including managing cafeterias, reception and concierge services, conference rooms, internet lines, power backups, security etc. Coworking operators are adapting their space according to the needs of occupiers. They are providing multiple options to occupiers ranging from entire buildings dedicated to coworking spaces to coworking offices within conventional work environments. As the coworking players have started to lease larger spaces, the average size of transactions in the coworking segment increased from 52,000 sq. ft. (2018) to 69,000 sq. ft. in 2019. A new kind of expansion is already underway: Moreover, coworking operators are not limiting themselves to office complexes but expanding their horizons beyond

Is the North-East for sale?

(From previous issue) Why? The RSS and its affiliates are fully aware that there is one institution they must weaken, if not destroy, is the Church if the Hindus ever hope to control the North-East. As Secretary of the BJP NE States Coordination Council, PB Acharya (former Governor of Nagaland and an active RSS member) wrote to former BJP Prime Minister Atal Vajpaiyee: “We have achieved our vowed object of piercing Trishul (weapon of Lord Shiva but it is also used as a Hindu symbol) in the chest of so-called ‘Lord Christ’” (Mid Day). What if the more than 17 million Hindus in Bangladesh decide to leave Muslim Bangladesh? Where would they try to settle, if not the NE States? Don’t tell me the RSS-controlled BJP government in Delhi might not welcome these 17 million Bangladeshi Hindus to settle in the North-East Region? How do the Naga politicians think existing laws can prevent an influx of illegal immigrants through Assam’s jungles? The Modi government is

convinced that through the means of overpopulating the whole of North-Eastern Region with Hindus from Bangladesh, they can make the North-East a Hindu heartland. Once these Bangladesh Hindus are covered by the provisions under CAA, it will not take long before Hindus become the majority and nothing will stop them from taking control, for instance, of the Nagaland State Assembly and placing a Trishul in front of every church pulpit. Is this what we are waiting to see actually happen? The leadership of the church should be fully aware of this. Shockingly, of all people, five tribal Christian Members of Parliament from the North-East voted in favor of CAA — on the assurance by Modi’s BJP government, perhaps, that there are already enough protective measures in place, such as the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the provision in 371A of the Indian Constitution. Knowing the RSS-controlled BJP Government in Delhi, it is naïve and shortsighted especially on the part of the Nagas to think we are

fully protected and that the passing of CAA cannot impact the Nagas in any way. Believe me, if Assam falls the rest will fall too. It’s time for our young people, especially college and university students, to see how miserably my generation has failed to protect the North-East, and to wake us up from our deadly slumber. Today’s politicians and bureaucrats are selling the North-East to Delhi for money, for jobs, for power. A new breed of visionary young men and women must rise up to provide leadership to save these fast shrinking NorthEastern States. The Church of Jesus Christ especially must not shirk her responsibility in rooting out evils anywhere. Christians in Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya, in the tribal districts of Manipur and elsewhere, must see to it that truly God-fearing educated young men and women get actively involved and provide Christian leadership in the Church and for society at large. (Concluded) Tuisem A. Shishak

and venturing into shopping malls, hotels and metro stations, as well. The huge potential of this sector is attracting institutional investment and this, in turn, is furthering growth. Investments and acquisitions are not just driving geographical expansion, but also aiding technological augmentation, upgradation of amenities and an increase in the client base. Landlords and developers have also realised the potential of coworking spaces as reputed brands working out of such spaces also add to the value proposition of the building. Companies are now choosing to opt for coworking spaces as they are having more flexible lease terms, contemporary ecosystem, lower deposit requirements, absence of capital expenditure and help in overall cost reduction in case of the company’s cash flow. The positive impact that coworking spaces have had on employee productivity for corporates and the health of commercial real estate for developers cannot be ignored. Coworking as a segment is expected to expand significantly across several industries and sectors due to a multitude of leasing options and an ocean of choices that are made available, tailored to individuals as well as small and large organisations. Sir (s), Q- Is Nagaland a dry state? 1. If yes, why is alcohol sold so openly in almost every place in Nagaland? Is there a village or town in Nagaland where liquor is not really available? 2. If no, allow Nagas to drink good liquors and give opportunities to jobless young entrepreneurs to run these business. who had come to India in 2000. He had seen the Taj along with daughter Chelsea Clinton. In 1959, then US president David Dwight Eisenhower had visited Taj along with then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. From massive billboards bearing greeting messages to street roundabouts decked up with US and India flags, Agra had waited excitedly to welcome President Trump and authorities made arrangements to present a “lively Agra” to the visiting President, seeking to shake off the old tag of ‘city of ghosts’. “During Clinton’s visit the city streets were deserted due to security arrangements, prompting him to call it a ‘city of ghosts’. This time the excitement can be felt in the air,” said Mohit Kumar, who works at a hotel in Tajganj area. “I was very young in 2000 when Clinton visited. We are very excited and happy that another US President has come to our city due to which the civic amenities have been improved,” he said.

NEW DELHI, FEB 24 (PTI): The Congress on Monday questioned the ‘silence’ of Home Minister Amit Shah over the clashes in Delhi and demanded his resignation, as party leader Rahul Gandhi urged people to show restraint, compassion and understanding irrespective of the provocation. The party also blamed the Delhi police for failing to maintain law and order in the city and criticised Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for having “shaken off his responsibility”, saying people of Delhi are paying the price of a political blame game. Gandhi said peaceful protests are a sign of a healthy democracy, but violence can never be justified. “The violence today in Delhi is disturbing and must be unequivocally condemned. Clashes broke out between groups supporting and opposing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in northeast Delhi’s Jaffrabad and Maujpur on Monday, with protesters torching houses, shops and vehicles, and hurling stones at each other. A Delhi Police head constable was killed and a

deputy commissioner of police injured in the violence. Clashes were also reported in Chandbagh and Bhajanpura areas of the city. This is the second day of clashes in Delhi where US President Donald Trump will arrive on Monday evening. “Delhi police has completely failed to maintain law and order. Delhi CM has shaken off his responsibility completely, while the HM stays silent. HM should take responsibility and resign immediately. The people of Delhi are paying the price of political blamegame,” the Congress said on its official Twitter handle. “The horrific violence in parts of Delhi, resulting in the loss of life of a head constable, is deeply saddening. We appeal to everyone to maintain peace and law and order in the capital,” the party said.

Massive billboards bearing greeting messages and pictures of Trump, First Lady and Modi dotted the nearly 13-km convoy route as street roundabouts decked up with US and India flags symbolised the US-India friendship. An extensive three-layered security is in place for his Agra visit, and authorities had got the Taj Mahal premises cleared of visitors by noon, hours ahead of Trump’s visit to the celebrated architectural landmark. B H O PA L / I N D O R E / Hyderabad, FEB 24 (PTI): Organisations representing the 1984 gas tragedy survivors on Monday staged a protest in Bhopal against the visit of US President Donald Trump claiming his dispensation was not extending help in the ongoing trial into what has been widely acknowledged as the world’s worst industrial disaster. Rachna Dhingra of the Bhopal Group for Information and Action said protesters at Bhopal’s Iqbal Maidan registered their anger at the US government not serving summons issued by a court in MP’s capital city to Dow Chemicals, an American multi-national company. The protesters held placards alleging the Trump administration was sheltering fugitives of the Bhopal tragedy. In Indore, local organisations protested at regal Chauraha by forming a human chain, which also saw the participation of former state advocate general Anand Mohan Mathur. Protesters in Indore held placards demanding that US investment in India’s agriculture, animal husbandry and dairy sectors be banned. All security arrangements were put in place for the students to attend schools, officials said. The students were happy to be back at the schools after remaining home all these months. “It is a good feeling to be back at the school, to attend my class, in fact

at a private school in the city here said, wishing not to be identified. While the government had made several efforts last year to re-open schools in a phased manner following the Centre’s decision to do away with Jammu and Kashmir’s special provisions, its attempts failed to bear any fruit as parents kept their wards at home due to apprehensions about their safety. Towards the end of the year, a few schools opened, but asked students to attend their classes without wearing school uniforms. Director School Education Kashmir, Mohammad Younis Malik, has urged teachers to work with dedication for building capacities of students for their better future. “It is our responsibility to extend our support to them and redouble efforts to get their syllabus completed well in time,” the director said. He has instructed field officers to visit schools regularly to monitor the followup of academic planner for timely accomplishment of set targets.

The bench made it clear that the report will not be shared with the petitioners or the lawyers representing the Centre and Delhi Police at this stage. When the counsel representing one of the petitioners requested the court that report be shared with them, the bench said: “We are here. Everyone is here. Let us have the benefit of the report first. The copy of the report is for the court only.” At the outset, Ra-

National Register of Citizens (NRC). Habibullah has recently filed an affidavit in the court and said that the protest at Shaheen Bagh was peaceful and inconvenience being caused to commuters was due to barricades “unnecessarily” put by police on roads far away from the site. The same stand has been taken by Naqvi and Azad in their joint affidavit filed in the court in the matter. The apex court had earlier said that though people have a fundamental right to protest “peacefully and lawfully”, it was troubled by the blocking of a public road at Shaheen Bagh as it might lead to a “chaotic situation”. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for Delhi government and Delhi Police, had told the court that the solution is to remove these protestors from the site.

Sunni Board to build mosque, hospital on five-acre site LU C K N OW, F E B 2 4 (PTI): The Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board on Monday said it will build a mosque as well as an Indo-Islamic research centre, a hospital and a library on the five-acre plot allotted to it following the Supreme Court’s Ayodhya verdict. The decision to accept the land was taken at a board meeting here. “It has been decided at a meeting of the board to take the five-acre land given to us by the UP government,” board chairman Zufar Farooqui told reporters. He said the board will set up a trust soon for the construction of the mosque. Asked if whether the planned mosque would be named after the demolished Babri Masjid, Farooqui said, “It will be decided by the trust. The board has nothing to do with it.” “Besides the mosque, there will be an Indo-Islamic research centre, a public library, a charitable hospital and other useful facilities on the land”, he said. He said the size of the mosque will be decided keeping in mind local needs. temple. It also ordered that an alternative five-acre plot must be found for a mosque within Ayodhya. The 16thcentury Babri mosque that stood on the disputed site in Ayodhya was demolished in 1992 by karsevaks, claiming that originally there was a Ram temple at the same spot. Soon after last year’s verdict on the Ayodhya land dispute, there were suggestions that the Sunni board should not accept an alternative plot. There were also suggestions that instead of a mosque to replace the demolished Babri Masjid, the Muslim community should build a public facility, like a hospital, there. The Sunni Waqf Board,

however, made it clear that rejecting the site was not an option. “Following the Supreme Court verdict, the Sunni Waqf Board does not have the choice of rejecting the five-acre alternative land for the construction of a mosque in Ayodhya as it would amount to contempt of court,” Farooqui had said earlier. Including Farooqui, the Sunni Waqf Board has eight members. Six of them attended the meeting. Based on the SC verdict, the Centre had asked the UP government to allot five acres of land to the Sunni Waqf Board. The UP Cabinet made the allotment after its meeting of February 5.

No starvation deaths, ration card cancellations, Centre to SC New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS): The Centre on Monday told the Supreme Court that baseless allegations have been made in connection with deaths due to starvation in Jharkhand, and cancellation of ration cards of nearly thirty million poor people in the country. Attorney General K.K. Venugopal contended before a bench headed by Chief Justice S.A. Bobde that he will put the response on an affidavit as incorrect statistics have been relied upon to arrive at this conclusion. The response from the government’s top law officer came during the hearing of a PIL, where senior advocate Colin Gonsalves alleged the food has been denied to many in absence of Aadhaar card, which led to starvation deaths. The PIL petitioner and the Centre traded charges on the authenticity of the data on alleged cancellation of ration cards. Gonsalves claimed before the bench also comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and Surya Kant that ration cards of nearly three crore people have been cancelled. He cited the death of the 13-year-old girl due to starvation in Jharkhand after she was denied ration due

to non-matching of Aadhaar details with her ration card. However, Venugopal insisted the Centre is in the process of gathering details from the state government, which have not filed a report despite notice issued in December 2019, and then file a comprehensive response on the matter. Gonsalves cited Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan’s response in the Parliament, where he had said, to stop leakages, 2.33 crore ration cards have been cancelled. Venugopal replied this happened between 2013 to 2016, and these were not genuine ration cards. The court adjourned the matter for further hearing after four weeks, and asked the states to submit response on this matter. The apex court had already issued notices to the state governments seeking their response on the implementation and setting up of a grievance redressal mechanism under the Food Security Act, which aims at food for all. The Centre had stated that as per Section 40 of the Act, every state government is mandated to have internal grievance redressal mechanism or nodal officers for effective and expeditious redressal of grievances.

Arvind Kejriwal with Manish Sisodia and other ministers on the first day of a three-day session of the State Assembly. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, FEB 24 (PTI): Sixty-nine newly elected MLAs, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia, took oath as members of the Delhi Assembly as its three-day session began on Monday. Ja n a k p u r i M L A Rajesh Rishi could not take oath on Monday because he was not in town and he will now take oath as the member of newly-constituted Delhi Assembly on Tuesday. This is the first assembly session after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) formed the government for third time in the national capital. The oath-taking process started with Kejriwal, followed by Sisodia, Environment Minister Gopal Rai, Health Minister

Satyendar Jain, Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot and other legislators. On the first day of the Seventh Delhi Legislative Assembly, sixty-one members took oath in Hindi, three in Urdu, two members in Maithili, and one member each in English and Punjabi. AAP MLAs Saurabh Bharadwaj and Naresh Balyan took oath in the name of Lord Hanuman and several MLAs chanted ‘Jai Hanuman’, thumping their desks. According to the Greater Kailash MLA, BJP MLA Anil Kumar Bajpai raised objection when he was taking oath in the name of Lord Hanuman. Legislators such Sanjeev Jha and Ritu Raj Govind, who came dressed in traditional attire, took

oath in Maithili language. Matia Mahal MLA Shoaib Iqbal, who was appointed pro-tem speaker, oversaw the oath-taking ceremony in the House. A few hours before the start of first session on Monday, Iqbal took oath at the LG office. Later, Shahdara MLA Ram Niwas Goel was unanimously elected as the speaker of assembly for the second consecutive term. While Tilak Nagar MLA Jarnail Singh took oath in Punjabi, another AAP MLA Rajesh Gupta took oath in the name of his mother and father. MLAs Rohit Mehroliya took oath in the name of Maharishi Valmiki. Raghav Chadha, Atishi Marlena and Dilip Pandey were among first time MLAs who took oath as the members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. BJP’s Badarpur MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, who was elected as Leader of Opposition earlier on Monday, hugged Iqbal after taking oath. Bidhuri and Iqbal were first elected to Delhi Assembly in 1993. The seventh Delhi Legislative Assembly was constituted after the Aam Aadmi Party won 62 seats in the 70-member House. The BJP won eight seats, while the Congress drew a blank.

Punjab DGP should be dismissed over Kartarpur remarks: Oppn parties CHANDIGARH, FEB 24 (PTI): Opposition AAP and SAD in Punjab on Monday demanded that DGP Dinkar Gupta be dismissed over his purported statement on the Kartarpur Corridor. The parties, which staged a protest outside the Punjab Assembly over the matter, also sought a response from Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) saying Director General of Police (DGP) Gupta “should also be booked and sent to jail”. Gupta on Sunday had said he expressed his “sincere regret” if a remark made by him inadvertently caused hurt to the people of the state. “We want Amarinder Singh to dismiss the DGP for his highly condemnable statement and he should also be booked and sent to jail,” AAP MLA Harpal

Dinkar Gupta (File)

Singh Cheema told reporters here. AAP members also carried posters of the DGP and raised slogans against the state government. Senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia lashed out at the DGP for his purported statement. “We want to know why CM Amarinder Singh and Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar are mum over the DGP’s statement...who

(DGP) was handpicked by the Congress. We seek answers from them,” Majithia said. Opposition parties had claimed that DGP Gupta had told a national daily, “Kartarpur offers a potential that you send somebody in the morning as an ordinary chap and by evening he comes back as a trained terrorist actually. You are there for six hours, you can be taken to a firing range, you can be taught to make an IED.” The DGP had also reportedly said some elements based in the neighbouring country were “trying to woo the pilgrims and making overtures to them”. Gupta had said he was being “misunderstood or wilfully misconstrued” as his remarks strictly pertained to the security and safety of Punjab and India.

Ravi Pujari (middle) held by security personnel.

BENGALURU, FEB 24 (PTI): Fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari who is wanted in many heinous crimes, including murder and extortion, was brought to the city in the early hours of Monday from Senegal, police said. Later in the day, he was produced before the 1st Additional City Metropolitan Magistrate’s (ACMM) court which remanded him to police custody till March 7. A former close aide of India’s most wanted and mastermind of the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, Dawood Ibrahim and gangster Chhota Rajan, Pujari was brought here under tight police security by an Air France flight. A team of police officers from the state includ-

ing Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Amar Kumar Pandey and Bengaluru Joint Police Commissioner Sandeep Patil went to Senegal to bring him. Thanking Indian authorities, government and the Supreme Court of Senegal for the extradition, Pandey said “the whole extradition process in Dakar (capital of Senegal) took two days and on February 22 at 10 pm Senegal time, custody of the fugitive Ravi Pujari was handed over to Indian authorities under due procedures.” The gangster was recently nabbed in South Africa in a joint operation by the SA police and Senegal security agencies, reportedly

on a tip from Indian intelligence agencies, and was later extradited to Senegal, official sources said. At the time of his arrest in Senegal, he had a Burkina Faso passport with a false identity of Anthony Fernandes, the sources said. He was arrested by Senegal authorities last year and Indian counterparts had tried their best to get hold of him, but failed as a local court there granted him bail. The gangster then jumped bail, fled Senegal and holed up in South Africa, sources added. Pujari, involved in at least 97 criminal cases in Karnataka, including 47 from Bengaluru alone, was running organised extortion rackets in the state and other parts of the country. There was an Interpol red corner notice against Pujari, who is wanted in multiple cases including murder, attempt to murder and extortion. He is said to be involved in a double murder at Shabnam Developers at Tilak Nagar here in February 2007, allegedly as the developer refused to pay him extortion money.

The members of the terrorist gang conducted meetings at Bengaluru and other parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and propagated ISIS ideology, procured arms and ammunition and other incriminating material for executing their plans, the official said. In this case, five accused Mehaboob Pasha, Mohammed Mansoor Ali Khan, Saleem Khan, Zabiulla, Syed Azmathulla were arrested while others are absconding. Agenda of Trump’s visit to prise open Indian Gov, Dy. CM extend eco to boost US corporate interest: CPI (M) Sekrenyi greetings

NEW DELHI, FEB 24 (PTI): The CPI (M) on Monday said the “unilateral agenda” of US President Donald Trump’s visit is to further prise open the Indian economy to boost the US corporate interest and help his re-election bid. The party also called upon the Narendra Modi government not to succumb to the US agenda. “The Politburo of the CPI (M) calls upon the Modi government not to succumb to the unilateral agenda of US President Donald Trump on his visit to India. The singular intention of the US administration is to further prise open Indian economy to boost the US corporate interest and thus help the re-election bid of Trump,” it said. Trump is on a two day visit to India. It also said the US agenda will “adversely affect” the interests of the Indian farmers, agriculture, particularly the dairy and poultry sectors. “USA allows its agribusiness to distort prices to outcompete local farmers in the developing countries with

a subsidy of a whopping $ 867 billion”. “Trump wants India to now remove the tariff barrier which serves as a policy tool to protect the Indian farmers, food procurement for people’s food security and minimum support price to our farmers. This will destroy Indian agriculture and the livelihood of crores of our people,” the party said. Accusing the US President of targeting India’s health care sector, the party said its demands that India must remove the compulsory licensing for the benefit of mega US pharmaceutical corporations was “misplaced”. The US cor porate agenda on e-commerce is

equally invasive which is trying to cajole India to sign the digital trade regime at WTO which would allow US big-tech to increase their control over the economy and the political process and facilitate free cross border data flows without compensation, it said. “At the same time, the Indian government must insist on US restrictive policy on visas which is adversely affecting Indian IT industry. “Pressures are being exerted on export subsidy for small manufactures especially in fields like solar cell manufacturing,” it said. The Politburo of the party calls upon the BJP government to resist such US pressures which undermine India’s economy and security concerns.

NTUCT sets 7-day deadline

(From p-1) The union warned that failure to comply with its deadline would force the people of Chumoukedima to not allow any boulderladen trucks to cross police check gate. And authority concerned would be held entirely responsible in case of any law and order situation arising thereof, it cautioned. NTUCT vice-president Akum Imchen and joint secretary Akato Sema in a release said constant riverbed mining by employing heavy machineries for extracting stone boulders and plying

of boulder-laden trucks and tipper trucks in river Chathe and its upstream tributaries had made the water muddy, making it unfit and harmful for both men and animal consumption. It alleged that the harmful impact was directly affecting people in downstream, particularly Chumoukedima town and its surrounding villages. According to the duo, the situation was getting more aggravated in the current lean season period when both humans and animals were all dependent on the river for water. The union recalled

that the DC Dimapur had banned the use of heavy machineries for extraction of resources in both Dhansiri and Chathe rivers in Dimapur district through an order (No. GEN-9/ DEV/ 2016-D/ 4007-31/ dated, 14 July 2017). Similarly, the Medziphema ADC also issued restriction order on February 28, 2019. Pointing out that the orders were never complied, NTUCT alleged that the administration concerned also never bothered to ensure that its own orders were implemented in letter and spirit.

Excise forms panel to curb flow of liquor in State

(From p-1) Welcoming all the constructive criticisms, the advisor described the ultimatum as “a wakeup call for the department.” Taking note of the difficulties faced by the department while executing the NLTP Act, the advisor sought active participation of all stakeholders includ-

ing NGOs, police and administration and said that “it should be a people’s movement.” In the face of security threats from “elemental forces”, the advisor observed that the department should be modernised and equipped with adequate logistics and arms.

GoI, WC on threshold of signing Naga solution

(From p-1) He said NSCN (I-M) was adamant with its demand on “sovereign-independent” whereas NNPGs, while not giving up on the right of the Nagas to be independent, agreed to pursue the same post “solution” through democratic political process. “Naga people are pressuring us for solution. We are compelled to acknowledge the sentiments of the people we are representing”, said Kitovi. On NSCN (I-M) not coming on board

to give the nod for final settlement, Kitovi said, “We cannot stop them for wanting sovereign-independence. We cannot control them. The reason is known to them. They will apply their own wisdom. As for NNPGs, Nagas desire for early solution is our top priority. We have the support of the Nagas.” Asked to give a tentative timeframe to sign final agreement, Kitovi said, “It should not take more time. We are trying to finalise everything as early as possible.”

DABPF backs DNSU demand to shut liquor outlets DIMAPUR, FEB 24 (NPN): Dimapur Ao Baptist Pastors’ Fellowship (DABPF) has resolved to sincerely appreciate and support the bold step taken by Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) in serving a seven-day ultimatum on February 22 to excise commissioner to shut down liquor outlets in the town.

The organisation said shutting down liquor shops was long felt by every right thinking citizen, particularly the churches all over the State. DA B P F o b s e r ve d that many families were wrecked due to alcohol consumption, even as the menace produced many anti-social elements in the society and destroyed

many young people’s careers. Acknowledging the initiatives, the body extended prayers and assured full support to DNSU, while requesting members of the churches to pray till the mission was fulfilled. This was stated in a press release by DABPF president Lipok Jamir and secretary L Panger.

NFHRCC urges State Govt for a separate head for funding Kma traffic rules DIMAPUR, FEB 24 (NPN): had started in 2014 as part of Lower Range Public Orfor Sekrenyi Nagaland Foothills Road the historic Foothills Road, ganisations (LLRPO) team Coordination Committee (NFHRCC) has resolved to urge the State government to explore a specific head to complete funding of the remaining approved amount for the bridge over Doyang river at Governor’s camp, Liphanyan in Wokha district as it was evident that construction had started under SPA fund, but was stopped subsequently due to certain changes in governmental funding pattern. The committee also resolved to further direct the construction firm to complete the remaining portion of the construction in this working season without delay and assured of pressurising the government to timely release all funds in commensurate with the progress of work. This followed a joint inspection by a team comprising NFHRCC and civil society organisation members, PWD (R&B) officials and constructing firm’s staff of the bridge construction on February 22. Construction of the bridge

now christened as Nagaland Expressway. The inspection team hoped that both the State government and the implementing agency would expedite work the earliest to help realise the dream of the Nagas. During the inspection, the construction firm’s staffs expressed frustration that altogether 39 working months were wasted due to many unforeseen reasons and work could be done only for 24 months. They assured the visiting team that they would do their best to complete the remaining work without much delay even though the last tranche of fund was released in 2017. Nagaland Post, Dimapur TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2020

‘Sustained cheaper spot LNG prices are biggest risk’ Bharti Infratel extends Indus NEW DELHI, FEB 24 (AGENCIES): India’s top gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd sees the falling spot price of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as the biggest risk to its business, its chairman Manoj Jain said on Monday. Spot prices of LNG in Asia hit a record low around $3 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) this month, making supplies of gas under previously agreed long-term deals unattractive for some price sensitive customers in India. GAIL over-committed to new liquefied natural gas volumes through long-term deals with the U.S. and Russia earlier this decade when supply was scarce and buyers rushed to secure deals. Spot prices at that time were in the double-digits. “The biggest risk is about the present prices of gas...The gap between spot and long-term is widening and that is a cause of con-

cern for us,” Jain said as he addressed the media for the first time since becoming chairman last week. He said GAIL had resold most of its LNG purchases under the long-

term deals but up to 30% was still an open position. “The prices are down in the spot (market) and if it takes a longer period to reach to a viable level then there would be significant

risk”. GAIL has deals to buy 5.8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG from the U.S. and up to 2.5 mtpa of LNG annually on a delivered basis from Russia’s Gazprom. The landed price of LNG under the deal with Gazprom is currently around $7.5/mBtu. GAIL renegotiated its contract with Gazprom in 2018, and the Indian oil minister at end-2017 told lawmakers that the company was looking at renegotiating contracts with U.S. companies. “We are looking at it and at an appropriate time we will make a commercial call,” Jain said, when asked if his company would renegotiate deals with the U.S. and Gazprom. “There is a need to realign the long-term contracts looking at the current situation”. Prime minister Narendra Modi wants to in-

crease the share of gas in India’s energy mix to 15% by 2030 from about 6.2% now. However, inadequate infrastructure, including pipeline and gas import facilities, have curbed gas demand. GAIL expects India’s annual gas demand growth to double to 6%-8% in 3-4 years by which time new gas pipelines will be laid to connect industries and households, Jain said, adding cheaper spot LNG has already attracted some power plants to the cleaner fuel. GAIL and its joint ventures will invest 1.05 trillion rupees ($14.61 billion)over five years, with about half of that spent on laying around 7,000 kilometers of new pipelines, Jain said. It expects its 5 mtpa Ratnagiri liquefied natural gas terminal to operate at full capacity in 2022 when a breakwater is built. The terminal currently operates at 2 mtpa capacity.

merger timeline by 2 months

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS): Bharti Infratel on Monday extended the deadline for the closure of its merger with Indus Towers by another two months to April 24 and said that the final decision to implement the deal will take into account the impact of the current AGR crisis on the company, shareholders and its major customers. “Since the other actions/conditions precedent to be fulfilled for the scheme to become effective cannot be completed by the extended Long Stop Date, i.e. February 24, 2020, the Board of Directors have further extended the date till April 24, subject to an agreement on closing adjustments and other conditions precedent for closing, with each party retaining the right to terminate and withdraw the scheme,” Infratel said in a statement to the exchanges on Monday. “The final decision to implement the scheme will be taken by

the Board keeping in mind the best interests of the company and its stakeholders, including the assessment of the current crisis facing the telecom industry and the extent of its impact on the company’s major customers,” the company added. Reacting to the extension decision, Shares of Infratel, India’s only listed tower company, were down to Rs 211.60 (6.45 per cent). The deal is expected to be cleared by the National Company Law TribunalChandigarh and then the Registrar of Companies will take it on record, which might take two to three months. The merger deal, announced in April 2018, received a crucial approval from the DoT for the foreign direct investment on Friday. Under the Bharti Infratel-Indus merger terms, cash-strapped Vodafone Idea has the option to sell its entire 7 per cent stake which it will get in the merged entity to the shareholders

for cash, based on an agreed formula. VIL is expected to generate about Rs 4,500 crore via this route. The timely approval of DoT for this deal was seen as a relief step from the government towards the telcos to monetise their stake in the wake of the pending dues of AGR. Indus Towers is co-owned by Bharti Infratel, UK’s Vodafone Group Plc and VIL, with the first two holding 42 per cent each. VIL owns 11.15 per cent while the remaining 4.85 per cent is with the private equity firm Providence. Bharti Airtel has a majority stake in Bharti Infratel. After VIL’s exit, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Plc are expected to hold 37.2 per cent and 29.4 per cent respectively in the merged entity. VIL can also sell the stake to a third party. But under the current circumstances Vodafone Idea can look at selling the stake to some existing shareholders under a pre-agreed formula.

Lotteries to attract uniform Stocks, oil prices tumble on pandemic fears, as gold soars 28% GST rate from March 1

New Delhi, Feb 24 (IANS): Lotteries will now attract a 28 per cent uniform Goods and Services Tax (GST) from March 1. This GST rate will be applicable to state-run and authorised lotteries from March 1, according to a notification. The GST Council, led by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, had in December last year decided to increase the rate as well as implement a single rate for lotteries. Buyers of tickets for lotteries would now have to shell out 28 per cent.

According to notification issued by the revenue department, the GST rate on supply of lotteries has been amended to 14 per cent and a similar percentage will be levied by the states. As a result, total GST on lotteries will increase to 28 per cent. “This notification shall come into force on March 1, 2020,” a notification by the revenue department said. Currently, lotteries run by the state-owned agencies levy 12 per cent GST, while a state-authorised lottery attracts 28 per cent tax. The

lottery industry had sought a uniform tax rate on lotteries following which a group of ministers were set up to suggest the GST rate. The eightmember group of ministers headed by Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, had recommended that the council would decide either on 18 per cent or 28 per cent GST for lotteries. Following this, the GST Council in December voted for a single rate of 28 per cent on supply of lotteries.

London, Feb 24 (AFP): World stock markets and oil prices tumbled Monday, with Milan and Seoul falling hardest on growing fears of a coronavirus pandemic, as gold hit a seven-year peak on safe-haven buying, dealers said. In late morning deals, Milan’s stock market dived almost five per cent following reports of a fourth death amid the COVID-19 epidemic, an 84-year old man in the northern Lombardy region. It was the third death in Lombardy, where villages have been sealed off and security measures enforced

to stem the spread of the disease. Traders’ screens were awash with red elsewhere in Europe too, with Frankfurt falling 3.7 per cent, London losing 3.5 per cent, Madrid down 3.3 per cent and Paris shedding 3.8 per cent. Brent oil prices slumped four per cent as the burgeoning crisis sparked global energy demand worries. Conversely, on the London Bullion Market gold surged to USD 1,689.31 per ounce -- a level last seen in January 2013 -- as investors snapped up the precious metal as a safety measure amid the market turbulence. “Fears over an escalation of

the coronavirus outside of China have caused a major retreat in global markets and prompted wild swings in commodity prices,” said AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould. “Italy’s lockdown, as the country tries to control the worst outbreak of the virus in Europe, has caused investors to panic about how business and society will be affected. A large spike in coronavirus cases in South Korea has also added to market concerns. “The result is a large sell-off in equities with... Europe and Asia deeply in the red,” Mould added.

Seoul nosedived 3.9 per cent as South Korea announced a surge in COVID19 infections, while Hong Kong erased 1.8 per cent but Shanghai retreated by only 0.3 per cent. With the outbreak showing little sign of easing, investors are increasingly concerned it could have a much longer-term impact on the world economy. Tr a d e r s h a d b e e n broadly optimistic that the virus -- which has killed nearly 2,600 and infected 80,000 -- was being contained outside China but a spurt of infections and deaths in other countries

including South Korea, Italy and Iran has fanned fears of a global outbreak. “It would appear the coronavir us has finally caught up with the markets,” OANDA analyst Craig Erlam told AFP. “As we saw in China, this can spread rapidly and be very difficult to contain (and) it is those fears that are weighing on markets.” On Monday, South Korea said it had 833 cases, making it the world’s worsthit country outside China, with seven people now dead. while President Moon Jae-in raised the virus alert to the highest “red” level.

Shaktikanta Das to keep close vigil. The RBI was having regualar interaction with statutory auditors, credit rating agencies, credit information firms, mutual funds and banks having large exposures to NBFCs, he said. “In addition to the four pillars of supervision -- on-site inspection, offsite surveillance, market intelligence and reports of statutory auditors (SAs) -- a fifth pillar of supervision in the form of periodic interaction with stakeholders, including statutory auditors, credit rating agencies, credit information firms, mutual funds and banks having large exposures to NBFCs has been instituted to have

a clearer understanding of the emerging risks and developments in the sector,” he said. It would ensure availability of critical information, whenever required, he said. On the co-operative banks, he said the RBI had developed a robust stresstesting framework for urban cooperative banks (UCBs). It also acts as early warning system for co-operative banks with timely identification of weak banks for appropriate action. It’s a shift from reactive to pro-active supervisory approach, intended to ensure surveillance of UCBs’ vulnerabilities. Moreover, as on December 31, 2019, over 90 per cent of these banks are now on the core banking solution, although efforts are required to standardise solutions and have a robust set of internal controls implemented for improved outcomes. The CAMELS (capital, asset quality, management, earnings, liquidity and systems & control) supervisory rating methodol-

ogy for UCBs has also been revised. “We have taken steps to bring UCBs under the CRILC reporting framework and issued draft guidelines on exposure norms to mitigate credit concentration risk and enhancement in the priority sector lending targets to further financial inclusion,” he said. To improve governance, the RBI had issued guidelines on formation of the UCB board of management (BOM) with deposit size of Rs 1,000 crore, he said. “To have appropriate regulatory powers in respect of co-operative banks, almost on par with those over banking firms, certain amendments in the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 have been proposed,” the RBI Governor said. The RBI move follows the sanctionining of personal loans by PMC Bank in August by throwing of all rules to the wind. Also, it was over and above the Rs 2,500 crore loan that HDIL had ceased repaying and which the cooperative bank failed to classify as bad loan.

Mumbai, Feb 24 (IANS): The top 50 nonbanking finance companies (NBFCs) were being monitored closely, said Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das, here on Monday, hinting at the RBI’s focus on early detection of risks signs or any contagion effect on the credit system. “The asset-liability management (ALM) position and other relevant aspects of the top 50 NBFCs are being closely monitored. It covers all NBFCs with asset size above Rs 5,000 crore. The ALM of top 51-100 NBFCs is also being examined by the respective regional offices of the RBI,” Das said at the ‘Banking landscape in the 21st century’ seminar. The NBFC sector has seen a lot of turmoil, starting with a series of defaults by Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services (IL&FS), that forced the government to intervene and exposed weaknesses in the sector. Then Dewan Housing Finance Corp also entered a crisis phase making the RBI

Turmoil in Malaysia as PM Mahathir resigns

KUALA LUMPUR, FEB 24 (AFP): Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad resigned on Monday in a move analysts said appeared to be an effort to form a new coalition and block the succession of leader-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim. The shock move followed weekend political drama that saw an attempt by Anwar’s rivals within his own “Pact of Hope” coalition -- which stormed to a historic election victory in 2018 -- and opposition politicians to form a new government. That coalition would reportedly have excluded Anwar, Mahathir’s presumptive successor and a former opposition icon who was jailed for years on questionable sodomy charges, blocking his ascent to the premiership. Anwar and Mahathir -- the world’s oldest leader, aged 94 -- have a notoriously stormy relationship but joined forces to oust a corruption-plagued government at the 2018 polls. Mahathir, who previously served as premier from 1981 to 2003, had made a

pre-election pledge to hand power to Anwar but has repeatedly refused to fix a date. The weekend push to form a new government appeared to have fizzled out by early Monday, but then Mahathir’s office made the surprise announcement that he had “sent a resignation letter as prime minister of Malaysia” to the king at 1:00 pm (0500 GMT). Shortly before, Mahathir’s Bersatu party announced it was leaving the ruling coalition and 11 lawmakers resigned from Anwar’s party, leaving the

Pact of Hope in tatters and fuelling speculation efforts could be under way to form a new alliance. Anwar was due to see the king Monday, with speculation mounting that he would try to convince him that he had the backing of enough MPs to form a government. While his role is largely ceremonial, the monarch approves the appointment of the prime minister, who must have the backing of most MPs in parliament. “If he has the majority then Anwar is the next

Nepal PM’s b’day celebrations marred by controversy

Ghani to take oath of office on Thursday

KATHMANDU, FEB 24 (PTI): Nepal Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli’s birthday celebrations were marred by controversy after pictures of him cutting a 15-kg-cake with the country’s map drawn on it went viral, according to media reports on Monday. Oli’s wife Radhika Shakya, along with a large number of people, including school children, and his close aides attended the 69th birthday celebrations of the premier on Sunday at his birthplace in east Nepal’s Terhathum district. The cake, with a replica of the country’s map drawn on it, was taken in a helicopter from Kathmandu to the venue. In the pictures circulated online, Oli is seen cutting the cake and distributing it to the children present at the occasion, Annapurna Post daily reported. Social media users expressed anger at the use of the country’s map on the cake. “According to Ar-

Runner crawls for 8 hours after hurting ankle CHANDIGARH, FEB 24 (AGENCIES): Displaying grit and determination to stay alive, a runner in United States crawled for nearly eight hours to find help after breaking his ankle in a national park in Washington, authorities said. The Jefferson County Search and Rescue, a group of volunteers monitored by County sheriff ’s office, posted the dramatic details of the runner on his Facebook page. “Carrying a charged cell phone and displaying incredible grit and determination to self-rescue likely prevented more serious injury in this case,” said the Facebook page. As per details on Friday last week around 5 am, the runner was injured on the Duckabush River Trail in the Olympic National Park, Washington. About 10 miles from the trailhead the runner could not call as his cell phone did not have a signal to call for help. “Temperatures were below freezing, and he was wearing only light running clothes as he crawled for several miles. At 12:45 a.m. on Saturday, he realized his phone had a signal because he received a text message. He called 911 and kept crawling, the post informed.

Cutting Nepal’s map in the form of the cake is inappropriate as it indicates motive to disintegrate the country, senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi was quoted as saying by online portal Hamrakur.com.

KABUL, FEB 24 (IANS): Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has planned to take the oath of office on Thursday, after he secured a second-term as the country’s leader, according to an informed source. Besides the source confirming the news to TOLO News on Sunday, the Afghan Presidential Palace has also announced the President’s plans but did not mention a day. On February 18, the Inde pendent Election Commission announced that Ghani had secured a second term by garnering 50.64 per cent of the votes cast in the September 28, 2019 presidential election. Ghani’s rival and Chief Executive of his National Unity Government Abdullah Abdullah came second by securing 39.52 per cent of the votes. The incumbent President’s win has sparked strong reactions from his rivals, including Abdullah who has rejected the result.

prime minister,” Azmi Hassan, political analyst with University Technology Malaysia, told AFP. But he added that “with Bersatu out of (the ruling coalition)... most probably Anwar won’t have the numbers”. Mahathir’s party may now join hands with the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) -the lynchpin of the forming ruling coalition, and party of scandal-tainted ex-leader Najib Razak -- and other groups to try to form a government, he said. Anwar had teamed up with former nemesis Mahathir ahead of the 2018 elections to oust the government of Najib, who had become embroiled in the massive 1MDB graft scandal, and they led their alliance to victory against a coalition that had ruled Malaysia for six decades. The pair’s difficult relationship has dominated Malaysia’s political landscape for over two decades. As finance minister and a powerful UMNO figure in the 1990s, Anwar had been tipped as Mahathir’s succes-

sor for the premiership, but his boss sacked him after they fell out over how to respond to a financial crisis. Anwar was arrested and thrown in jail after being convicted of sodomy and corruption in a case critics said was trumped up, but he emerged from prison to unify a ragtag political opposition into a potent force against the long-ruling government. Tensions had risen in the Pact of Hope coalition after Mahathir refused to fix a date to hand power to Anwar. T h e g ove r n m e n t ’s popularity had also been falling and they lost a string of local polls, as they faced accusations of failing to protect the country’s ethnic Malay Muslim majority and not moving fast enough on reforms. Their opponents also argued the party was becoming dominated by ethnic Chinese politicians. Race is a highly sensitive issue in Malaysia, which is about 60 per cent Muslim but also home to substantial ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2020

Coronavirus: Rapid spread raises fears of global pandemic LO N D O N / G E N E VA , FEB 24 (AGENCIES): Fears are growing that the coronavirus outbreak could reach pandemic scale as more cases emerge around the world, reports BBC. Most infections are in China but other nations like South Korea, Italy and Iran are battling the virus, which causes respiratory disease COVID-19. A pandemic is when an infectious disease spreads easily from person to person in many parts of the world. About 77,000 people in China, where the virus emerged last year, have been infected and nearly 2,600 have died. More than 1,200 cases have been confirmed in about 30 other countries and there have been more than 20 deaths. Italy reported two more deaths on Monday, raising the total there to five. The proportion of infected patients dying from COVID-19 appears to be between 1% and 2%, although the World Health Organization (WHO) cautions that the mortality rate is not known yet. On Monday Iraq, Af-

ghanistan, Kuwait and Bahrain reported their first cases, all involving people who had come from Iran. World must prepare for ‘potential pandemic’: WHO: World Health Organization chief said Monday the world should be working harder to contain the spread of the deadly new coronavirus, and should be preparing for a “potential pandemic”. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that so far, the WHO does not consider the outbreak that has killed more than 2,600 people a pandemic, but said countries should be “doing everything

we can to prepare for a potential pandemic.” WHO chief had warned on Friday that the window of opportunity to contain the virus was “narrowing”. Paul Hunter, professor of health protection at the University of East Anglia in the UK, echoed his fears, saying the spike in cases outside China was “extremely concerning”. “The tipping point after which [we lose] our ability to prevent a global pandemic seems a lot closer after the past 24 hours,” he said on Monday.

‘Climate change threatens future of all children’ NEW YORK, FEB 24 (AGENCIES): No single country is adequately protecting children’s health, their environment and their futures finds a landmark report released by a Commission of over 40 child and adolescent health experts from around the world. The report, A Future for the World’s Children?, finds that the health and future of every child and adolescent worldwide is under immediate threat from ecological degradation, climate change and exploitative marketing practices that push heavily processed fast food, sugary drinks, alcohol, and tobacco at children. Authored by the Commission convened by the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and The Lancet, the report includes a new global index of 180 countries, comparing performance on child flourishing, including measures of child survival and well-being, such as health, education, and nutrition; sustainability, with a proxy for greenhouse gas emissions, and equity, or income gaps.

According to the report, while the poorest countries need to do more to support their children’s ability to live healthy lives, excessive carbon emissions – disproportionately from wealthier countries – threaten the future of all children. If global warming exceeds 4°C by the year 2100 in line with current projections, this would lead to devastating health consequences for children, due to rising ocean levels, heatwaves, the proliferation of diseases like malaria and dengue, and malnutrition. The index shows that children in Norway, the Republic of Korea, and the Netherlands have the best chance at survival and wellbeing, while children in the Central African Republic, Chad, Somalia, Niger and Mali face the worst odds. However, when au-

thors took per capita CO2 emissions into account, the top countries trail behind: Norway ranked 156, the Republic of Korea 166, and the Netherlands 160. Each of the three emits 210 per cent more CO2 per capita than their 2030 target. The United States of America (USA), Australia, and Saudi Arabia are among the ten worst emitters. The only countries on track to beat CO2 emission per capita targets by 2030, while also performing fairly (within the top 70) on child flourishing measures are Albania, Armenia, Grenada, Jordan, Moldova, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Uruguay, and Viet Nam. To protect children, the independent Commission authors call for a new global movement driven by and for children. Among the report’s

China postpones parl session for 1st time

BEIJING, FEB 24 (PTI): In an unprecedented move, China on Monday postponed the annual session of Parliament from March 5 due to the coronavirus outbreak, state media reported as the country grapples with the deadly virus that has claimed over 2,500 lives and infected more than 77,000 people. The ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) showcases its political clout in the annual Parliament session. The countr y’s top legislature, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress (NPC), met here and approved a draft decision on postponing the NPC’s annual session due to coronavirus, China Global Television Network TV reported. The third annual session of the 13th NPC, one of China’s biggest political events, was originally planned to open on March 5 in Beijing. The death toll climbed to 2,592 with 150 new fatalities while the total number of confirmed cases increased to over 77,000,

health officials said on Monday. Meanwhile, the China-World Health Organisation (WHO) joint expert team visited Hubei Province, epicentre of the ‘COVID-19’ outbreak over the weekend to conduct field investigations, health officials said. Every year, the NPC and the top advisory body Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which together have over 5,000 members in their ranks, meet during

March to approve the government’s annual agenda including the budget. But the coronavirus outbreak continues to be a major concern. The NPC and CPPCC together constitute the biggest political event in China. Though Chinese officials claim that the intensity of the epidemic is coming down, the ruling CPC is averse to expose thousands of its top cadre to the virus which has not been brought under

control. The postponement of the NPC, which is often viewed as a rubber-stamp parliament for its routine approval of the CPC proposals, is regarded as an unprecedented move. The CPC considers the two sessions as a significant political events to adopt its national agenda, including the annual budgets and formulate new laws. Chinse analysts said the postponement of the two sessions is very un-

usual in the history of the Party, which has not been seen since the country’s reform and opening-up, state run Global Times reported. It’s also unknown when the two sessions will be rescheduled as it depends on how the epidemic prevention and control work evolves, especially when there has been no inflection point of the epidemic in sight yet, Zhuang Deshui, deputy director of the Research Centre for Government IntegrityBuilding at Peking University, told the paper. The proposal to delay the sessions indicates that the central government puts epidemic prevention and control work as its top priority, showing its highly responsible stance not only to the Chinese people but also to the world, Zhuang told the daily earlier. According to the Constitution and relevant laws, the NPC meets once a year and is convened by the NPC Standing Committee. The decision to postpone the session is taken by the NPC Standing Committee.

Human rights under assault worldwide: UN chief Guterres GENEVA, FEB 24 (AFP): UN chief Antonio Guterres launched a “call to action” on Monday against rising attacks on human rights worldwide, highlighting the persecution of minorities and “alarming levels of femicide”. “Human rights are under assault,” said the secretary general as he opened the UN Human Rights Council’s main annual session in Geneva. “People are being left behind. Fears are growing,” he said, pointing to swelling divisions and political polarisation in many countries. “A perverse political arithmetic has taken hold: divide people to multiply votes,” he said, warning that “the rule of law is being eroded”. Guterres said civilians were being “trapped in wartorn enclaves, starved and bombarded in clear violation of international law” as well as “human trafficking, affecting every region in the world, preying on vulnerability and despair”.

Antonio Guterres (File)

He also said women and girls were being “enslaved, exploited and abused”, “activists tossed in jail, and religious and ethnic minorities groups persecuted” and “minorities, indigenous people, migrants, refugees, the LGBTI community vilified as the ‘other’ and tormented by acts of hate”. Guterres launched a “call to action” to the entire UN system, to governments, parliamentarians, the private sector, civil society and to “people everywhere”. He laid out seven areas where he said concrete action could “achieve a

quantum leap in progress or avert the risk of backsliding”, including boosting efforts to halt violence against women and girls -- “the world’s most pervasive human rights abuse”. “We see a pushback against women’s rights, alarming levels of femicide, attacks on women human rights defenders, and the persistence of laws and policies that perpetuate subjugation and exclusion,” Guterres said. “We also continue to see chronic stagnation in women’s participation in political leadership roles, peace processes and economic inclusion,” he said. He stressed that work towards gender equality “starts within”, pointing out that as of January 1 this year, the UN achieved “gender parity across our senior-most ranks”. “We pledge to reach gender parity throughout the UN system at all levels by 2028,” he said, adding that the UN would apply “a gender perspective” to all its work.

Indian shot dead at grocery store in LA Indian-American in Trump’s entourage strikes an emotional note

WASHINGTON, FEB 24 (PTI): An Indian national has been shot dead by a masked assailant in Los Angeles with the police saying the suspect entered the grocery store with a semi-automatic handgun with the intent to commit a robbery. Maninder Singh Sahi, who turned 31 last month, was married and father of two. He was working at a 7-Eleven grocery store in the Whittier City in Los Angeles County of California. Hailing from Karnal in Haryana, Sahi had arrived in the US less than six months ago and had sought political asylum. T h e o n ly e a r n i n g member of his family, Sahi used to send money to his wife and two children back home, his relatives in the US said. According to the Whittier Police Department, the incident occurred at 5.43 am on Saturday.

Preliminarily it appears the suspect entered the store with a semi-automatic handgun with the intent to commit a robbery. “For unknown reasons the suspect fired the handgun killing the clerk,” the police said releasing a picture of the suspect. Authorities are still seeking the robber, who got away on foot with an unknown amount of cash. “The suspect fled the

location and is outstanding at this time. There were two customers inside the store, both were uninjured. The suspect is described as a male black adult approximately 506-507. Suspect had his face partially covered and was wearing a dark hoody with a gray hoody underneath,” police said. The victim’s brother here has set up a GoFund Page to raise money so that the body of deceased Maninder could be taken back to India. “He left behind, his parents, his wife and 2 small children, ages 5 and 9. “I am seeking assistance to help send his body back to India so his wife and kids can view him one last time,” his brother wrote in Go Fund Me page on Sunday.

The “Frozen II” actress made the revelation when she appeared on the Build Series here when she opened up on the concept of soulmates, reports aceshowbiz.com. While promoting her new baby brand Hello Bello, Bell said: “I think it’s who you choose to make it work with. I don’t think you could ever find your soulmate if you’re not ready. I don’t know if I think soulmates exist. “The Good Place” actress went on to say there’s “no way” she would have married “Spin the Wheel” star Shepard if they’d met five years earlier, laughing:

“We’d be a tabloid headline.” “We met at the time when we were both evolving into a place where it was ‘Okay, what are the outcomes I want in my life?’… I think you have to go through your own personal evolution to get there.” The actress previously said that she felt no spark when the couple first met, she said she thought he talked too much. However, they bumped into each other weeks later at an ice hockey game and “started to flirt,” and he later sent a sexy text that really got Kristen interested, she told “Today” last year. eteran Hollywood actor Harrison Ford says the team of his iconic franchise Indiana Jones, will not start working on the much-awaited installment unless they have something new to offer. The 77-year-old actor, who will reprise his role as the iconic adventurer in the new movie, said the team is currently facing some scheduling conflicts and is also finalising the script. “We’ve got some scheduling issues, a few script things still to do but we’re determined to get it right before we get it made. I don’t really want to give them what they wanna see, I want to give them something they didn’t anticipate seeing. “The Marvel movies are a spectacular example of a success that worked the other way round – they killed it. We’re not going to make another Indiana Jones unless we’re in a position to kill it. We want it to be the best,” Ford told HeyUGuys.com. Indiana Jones 5 to be directed by Steven Spielberg, was originally announced three years ago and has gone through various delays since then. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, released in 2008, was the last film from the beloved franchise. Harrison Ford first played the part in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, which he followed up with Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989). (PTI)

ollywood veteran Liam Neeson has ruled out his return to superhero movies as the actor says he is not a fan of the genre. The 67-year-old actor had famously portrayed the villainous Ra’s al Ghul in Christopher Nolan’s critically-acclaimed The Dark Knight trilogy. Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Neeson said that he is done with genre and has no desire to star in any superhero movie in the future. “I’m really not a huge fan of the genre. It’s just not my genre, it really isn’t,” he added. Neeson also said that he is not looking to return to the Star Wars universe as well because the films are “quite exhausting” to shoot. The actor had portrayed Qui-Gon Jinn in George Lucas’ 1999 movie Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace. “The first Star Wars, I was in that, that was 22 years ago, and I enjoyed

that, because it was novel and that was new. “I was acting to tennis balls, which were ultimately going to be little fuzzy furry creatures and

However, according to the portal We Got This Covered, Waititi could fill the director’s chair for the project because, as it was first reported in 2016, Fox are looking for a separate director from “Deadpool 2” to helm the third movie. In October 2019, Reese and Wernick, who penned the first two films, said that they had a script in development for “Dead-

A few weeks ago, a series of his tweets had surfaced in which he wrote: “I want to kill a person. Really.” According to zoomtventertainment. com, Hussain, in another tweet, was also seen instigating violence and asking people to pick a fight, burn houses and even kill a man if there is a chance. He had reportedly also badmouthed Brahmins by calling them the root of all evils in the country. “Takht” is a historical drama about the Mughal rivalry for the throne between Aurangzeb and his brother Dara Shukoh. While Ranveer Singh plays Dara, Vicky is cast as Aurangzeb. The film’s multi-star cast also includes Alia Bhatt, Kareena Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. he young stars in South Korean boy band BTS said on Monday the theme of their new album dealt with how they overcame doubts and fears encountered since they burst on the K-Pop scene seven years ago. Having performed at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last month, BTS stands at the forefront of South Korean pop music

year to “recharge”. When asked about the comment by Bong Joon-ho, director of the Oscar-winning “Parasite”, who recently said BTS was 3,000 times more influential than him, Suga said he was an avid fan of Bong’s work and hoped more South Korean artists would be introduced to the world. Leader and rapper RM likened K-pop to a “giftbox” integrating music, dance, video and interaction with fans, saying the personal elements the band infuses in its music might have boosted its global popularity. “We try to instil personal stories in our music and dance and I think the concerns and feelings that we have resonate with people around the world,” he said. But making music is a “constant battle to show your weakness and fight the fear of expressing your fear,” he added. BTS broke into the U.S. market in 2017 and was the first Korean group to win a Billboard music award. It is set to launch a new world tour in April, kicking off in Seoul. (Reuters)

for a late challenge in stoppage time. Bordeaux, who scored through Hwang Ui-jo, Pablo and Ruben Pardo, are 12th on 35 points. Third-placed Stade Rennais beat visiting Nimes 2-1 earlier on Sunday to reduce the gap to secondplaced Olympique de Marseille to eight points. Five days after losing 2-1 at Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League last-16 first leg, PSG did little to reassure their fans. The players had ‘Stay

Strong China’ written on their shirts to show their support for the victims of the coronavirus that has killed more than 2,000 people in China. In a tough first half, Silva limped off the pitch in the 16th minute with a muscle problem and was replaced by Idrissa Gueye. Hwang headed home from Nicolas de Preville’s corner as the PSG defence were caught off guard in the 18th minute, only for the hosts’ all-time best scorer Cavani to level with a head-

er from Angel Di Maria’s cross seven minutes later. The hosts increased the pressure and Cavani hit the woodwork before Mbappe forced Benoit Costil to make a superb save at the half hour. Marquinhos deflected Di Maria’s free kick with his shoulder to put the home side ahead three minutes into added time in the first half, only for Pablo to equalise one minute later in farcical fashion. Second-choice Sergio Rico’s clearance from Marco Verratti’s backpass bounced on to Pablo’s knee and into the goal. PSG, however, accelerated after the break and Marquinhos put the French champions ahead after 63 minutes, poking home the ball after Costil had parried a Cavani header into his path. Six minutes later, Mbappe doubled the advantage from close range after being set up by Cavani. PSG were kept on their toes until the final whistle as Pardo found the top corner with a superb strike seven minutes from time. Neymar was then sent off for a late and rough challenge on Yacine Adli.

‘Will convince Aubameyang to stay at Arsenal’

Lo n d o n, F e b 2 4 (Agencies): Arsenal manager Mikel Ar teta knows some of Europe’s top clubs are interested in signing captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but he hopes to convince the Gabonese striker to extend his stay beyond the end of his contract next year. The 30-year-old scored twice in Arsenal’s 3-2 Premier League win over Everton on Sunday, lifting them to ninth and improving their chances of qualifying for Europe next season. Reports in British media said Aubameyang, who took his tally to a leaguehigh 17 goals alongside Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy, was a target for Barcelona. “They’re completely right to want him because he’s a superb player. It’s right that the big teams like him. Hopefully we can convince him this is right place to be,” Arteta told reporters. “He is our most important player, no doubt the impact he has in this team. We will have to convince him to stay with us.” Arsenal had to make sure they gave Aubameyang the right stage to perform on.

KIUG: A convergence of sports and youth at KIIT University D i m ap u r , F e b 2 4 (NPN): The first Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2020 kick started at KIIT University campus in Bhubaneswar, Odisha on February 22. The games will conclude on March 1. “It is another milestone for KIIT to host the most prestigious university level gala sports event under the Government of India’s flagship “Khelo India” Programme, a dream project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi”, KIIT said in a statement. KIUG, a multi-disciplinary annual sporting extravaganza under the aegis of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Association of Indian Universities (AIU) aims to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation. Very aptly, it is being hosted by KIIT in Bhubaneswar which has emerged as the sporting capital of the country, read the statement. It has been a great honour with the trust the authorities of Khelo India University Games officials have placed on KIIT University, said Prof. Achyuta Samanta, founder of the KIIT. However, to host a tournament of such scale (4000 players from about 200 participating universities, about 1000 match officials and managers, 17 sporting events) required permissions from the state government, said Prof. Samanta. Therefore, talks K Y M C

Achyuta Samanta

were held and the dates were finalised, he added. KIIT & KISS have accorded high importance to sports since its inception besides top notch academics. The two institutions have together produced more than 5000sports talents in over 30 disciplines, who have gone on to participate at national and international levels. The students of KISS have participated in Olympics, South Asian Federation Games, Asian Games and many more. In fact, KISS has played an important role in popularising Rugby in India. Dutee Chand, Olympian and the fastest woman of India, who has won gold in the World University Games 2019 and two silvers in Asian Games 2019 is a student of KIIT. Juana Murmu, who is fondly referred to as the Hurdles Queen and Purnima Hembram who has won bronze in Heptathlon at 2015 and 2017 Asian Championships are students of KISS. The most recent achievement being Sumitra Nayak’s penalty scored in the dying minutes of the game to clinch the bronze medal for India, in a team consisting of five players from KISS, at the Asia Women’s Div-1 Rugby 15-s

Championship. “KIIT has also been hosting top-level sporting tournaments for many years. However, playing hosts to India’s flagship sporting event at the youth level was always going to be a challenge. It was a different ball game altogether. We had to ensure every minute detail was taken care of,” Prof. Samanta said. “Arguably, the most challenging bit was to accommodate around 5000 people in twin capacity, air-conditioned rooms in the middle of the academic year when we already had 30,000 students residing oncampus. Our priority had to be expediting the construction of several hostel blocks and sporting arenas that were in-progress and scheduled to be completed by the end of the calendar year. The pace had to be doubled and a collective effort was required. The entire staff of KIIT and KISS got involved with the utmost dedication. The preparations were completed in the nick of time. Officials from Khelo India had been monitoring the progress and inspecting all the locations. It is fair to say that they seemed content with all the arrangements, so much so that all 17 events of KIUG can be conducted at the KIIT campus itself,” said the founder professor. “A gripping sense of anticipation surrounded the entire university when the players started arriving. The first flick of the racket against the backdrop of the beautiful KIIT campus – I was overjoyed with a sense of satisfaction. It was finally time for kick-off,” added Prof. Achyuta Samanta, founder, KIIT & KISS.

Stefanos Tsitsipas with the trophy.

Marseille, Feb 24 (Agencies): Defending champion and second seed Stefanos Tsitsipas beat Canadian teenager Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 6-4 on Sunday to retain his Marseille Open crown. The 21-year-old world No 6, who successfully defended an ATP Tour title for the first time in his career, needed just 86 minutes to secure the straightsets victory. The victor y made Tsitsipas the first man to win back-to-back trophies at the tournament since Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist in 1997-98. Auger-Aliassime lost his second final in eight days, having been beaten in the title match at the Rotterdam Open, and the 19-year-old is yet to win a set in five ATP finals in his short career. “It’s great to be fighting on the court against

approached the net, forcing him to play defensive shots rather than attacking volleys, and he broke back to take a 4-3 lead before winning his next service game. The Canadian only delayed the inevitable with a hold of serve and Tsitsipas converted his first match point to wrap up the match in just under 90 minutes. “Winning without dropping a set makes me very proud,” Tsitsipas told the official ATP Tour website. “I am really happy that I get to break records and be part of some records. It is what keeps me going in the sport. It makes me hungry for more, in general. I want to go out there and break records and do things that others haven’t done yet. That’s what defines my personality.”

Although AugerAliassime asked tough questions of Tsitsipas in the opening set, coming up to the net to dictate play, the Greek soon started finding his angles to negate that strategy with passing shots. A break at 2-2 in the second set opened the door for Tsitsipas to serve out the match but AugerAliassime turned the tables by staying on the baseline, winning points with returns that were well out of reach to earn his first break point. Tsitsipas took advantage again, however, when Auger-Aliassime

Wellington, Feb 24 (IANS): Riding on the brilliant performance of their pacers, New Zealand on Monday comfortably defeated India by 10 wickets in the first Test played at the Basin Reserve. The hosts first bowled out India for 191 runs in the second innings and then chased down the ninerun target on Day 4 of the Test match with utmost ease to take a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Openers Tom Blundell and Tom Latham complet-

ed the formalities as they scored the required nine runs inside the first two overs itself. Earlier, the Indian batters were completely blown away By Trent Boult and Tim Southee, just like they were in their first innings. Resuming the day at 144/4 and trailing by 39 runs, the visitors lost their last six wickets for mere 47 runs in 17 overs they batted on the fourth-day morning. After that, there was no looking back as the lower-order of the Indian team - comprising of Rishabh Pant, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shamicouldn’t take inspiration from that of the Kiwis and the visitors were eventually all out in 81 overs. While Southee returned with figures of 5/61, Boult scalped four wickets giving away just 39 runs in

the 22 overs he bowled. The remaining wicket was taken by Colin de Grandhomme. Latham (7*) and Blundell (2*) then made sure New Zealand didn’t lose any wickets and scored the required runs in just nine balls. For New Zealand, all their three pacers performed brilliantly throughout the course of the match and the Indian batters appeared to have no answer to the hostile, shortpitched fast bowling. Southee returned with match figures of 9/110 while Boult picked up five wickets in the game giving away 96 runs in the two innings. Arsenal players celebrate after scoring a goal during their match against Everton.

London, Feb 24 (Agencies): Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice to earn Arsenal a 3-2 Premier League win over Everton, extending the Gunners’ unbeaten start to 2020 and moving them back into the battle for European places. The win lifts Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal side up to ninth place in the league with 37 points, while Everton remain without a victory at the Gunners in 24 years and a point adrift in 11th. As well as the goals of the prolific Aubameyang, who is now joint top scorer in the league on 17 with Jamie Vardy, Arsenal had keeper Bernd Leno to thank for some late saves which preserved the lead.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin put Carlo Ancelotti’s team ahead in the first minute with a superb, acrobatic volley after David Luiz had failed to deal with a Gylfi Sigurdsson free kick. Yet Arsenal reacted well, with young forward Eddie Nketiah, who started ahead of Alexandre Lacazette, levelling in the 27th minute, his first goal at the Emirates coming from a fine cross from the left from substitute Bukayo Saka. Six minutes later and Arsenal were ahead, Luiz making amends for his earlier mistake with a lovely, defence-splitting pass to Aubameyang who calmly slotted past Jordan Pickford. Brazilian Richarlison brought Everton back on

level terms though just before the interval, poking home from close range. Arsenal, however, struck straight after the break with Aubameyang heading in a Nicolas Pepe cross, 23 seconds after the restart. Leno then produced a brilliant point-blank reflex save from Calvert-Lewin and did well to keep out a Richarlison effort as Everton pushed for an equaliser. Everton almost grabbed a point at the end but CalvertLewin’s header from a Bernard cross went just wide. The victory completed an excellent week for Arteta’s side after their 4-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United and 1-0 win at Olympiakos in the Europa League on Thursday.

India to host Commonwealth Shooting, Archery Championships London, Feb 24 (PTI): India will host the Commonwealth shooting and archery championships in January 2022 and the medals from the two events will be counted for “ranking of competing nations” at the Birmingham Games, the CGF said on Monday. However the medals will be added to the final tally one week after the conclusion of the Games. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced the decision after its Executive Board meeting here from February 21 to 23. The decision can be considered a big win for India after it threatened to boycott the 2022 Birmingham Games for dropping shooting from the roster. “A Commonwealth Archer y and Shooting Championships is set to take place in India in 2022 after a proposal to stage the event was approved by the CGF Executive Board,” the CGF said in a release.

The two events will be held in Chandigarh in January 2022 while the Birmingham Commonwealth Games is scheduled from July 27 to August 7, 2022. “The decision confirmed that Chandigarh 2022 and Birmingham 2022 will be two separately organised and funded Commonwealth Sport events. “One week following the Closing Ceremony of Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, the CGF shall issue a medal table that includes results from the Chandigarh 2022 Commonwealth Archery and Shooting Championships, as a further and final legitimate ranking of competing nations and territories from the respective competitions,” the CGF added. In July 2019, the IOA had proposed to boycott the 2022 Birmingham CWG for dropping shooting from the roster. But, following a visit by CGF President Louise Martin and CEO David

Grevemberg in November last, the IOA withdrew its warning during the Annual General Body Meeting in December. The IOA, while withdrawing the boycott call, proposed to host Commonwealth Championships in shooting, as well as in archery, in 2022 with the condition that the medals awarded in these two events should be recognised in the final tally of the participating countries for the 2022 CWG. The government quickly gave the approval for these two championships. While the cost for the shooting championship is to be met largely by the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), the archery event would be funded solely by the Government of India. India also received wholehearted support from International Shooting Sports Federation and World Archery, the global governing bodies of the two sports.
