DIMAPUR, FEB 22 (NPN): Assam Congress, vice president, Pradyut Bordoloi said that Narendra Modi had only repeated in Tuensang today, whatever he had said four years ago on December 1, 2014 at the Kisama Hornbill Festival. In a press conference, at Aier’s enclave here on Thrusday, Bordoloi stated that the policy proposed by the Congress

the Centre has kept the door open for talks with anyone for finding a lasting solution to the Naga issues. He said the Centre was ready to talk to civil societies and other groups at any time. Kikheto Sema; joint secretary (FRC), Kekhwezo Kepfo and deputy secretary (budget), Ketoulhou Metha, attended the workshop. In his introductory speech, secretary, fifteenth finance commission, Arvind Metha, stated that the commission was aware of the various problems faced by the hilly states. He stressed that since there was only about one and half years left till the Fifteenth Finance Commission becomes effective in 2020-21, there was much work to be done. without making “abnormal demands”. He also said that the states should prepare good notes in support of the estimates to make the Commission become better acquainted with the problems faced. While addressing the meeting, Y. Kikheto Sema, stated that the Commission will be more aware of problems faced by the hill states, particularly North East states and Nagaland in particular. Stating that Nagaland was perhaps the only state to have been created out of a “political exigency”, Kikheto mentioned that

there have been talks for nearly 70 years now and now there was a note of positivity towards a probable solution to the talks. However, on the financial stage, Kikheto said that the 9th Finance Commission “went against the provision of the 16 point agreement and changed the funding pattern to the state”. Over and against this, he said the Thirteenth Finance Commission was one of the “most unfavourable” to the State of Nagaland, due to the normative approach that the 13th FC took towards the State. He said the Fourteenth Finance Commis-

sion took a “more favourable approach as it was more realistic, as a result of which the State has been able to hold its head above the water inspite of the huge bag and baggage carried over from the 13th FC in the form of deficit”. However, since the deficit was not covered by the 14th FC, Kikheto said the development works have not been able to be taken up in the state. The secretary finance said 10% devolution under the 14th finance commission did not have much impact on smaller states like Nagaland since projects such as SPA, NCA, etc. under erstwhile planning commission was discontinued, leaving the state with 40 incomplete SPA projects with pending liabilities of Rs. 836 crores, with litigations from the court due to non-payment of bills to contractors. Kikheto pointed out that the state has been requesting the government of India to consider this grant, as the NITI Aayog had also cleared it. However, he said a regret letter was received on December 16, 2017 and requested that the 15th FC to consider this problem faced by Nagaland. While commenting on the special category states,

Kikheto stated that there were only three special category states – Nagaland, Jammu & Kashmir and hill districts of Assam. However there are now 11 special category states (nearly 33% of the total states in India) and Bihar and Orissa are also seeking for the status. While stating that Nagaland has no objection towards the government considering states for special category, he re-iterated that Nagaland, Jammu & Kashmir and Arunachal Pradesh should be considered special out of special category states due to the geo-political issues prevailing in these states. The release informed that that the current workshop was the first consultative workshop for North East and Himalayan Region states, which gave the Commission an opportunity to address the problems faced by the states and gain from the experience insights from the state for timely completion of the preparatory exercise. All the states in attendance were able to highlight the problems encountered by respective states and the expectations from the fifteenth finance commission.

Give BJP a chance to serve Meghalaya: Modi

Correspondent

Phulbari, Feb 22: Exhorting the 18.43 lakh electorates in Meghalaya to vote for BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that the ruling Congress-led government is not taking the people of Meghalaya seriously since they see no political challenge in the state. “The enthusiasm and support that people of Meghalaya towards the BJP is overwhelming …. I urge the people of Meghalaya to give us a chance to serve the state. We will ensure good governance guided by the philosophy of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas,” he said addressing election rally here in Garo Hills. Garo Hills region in western Meghalaya has 24 assembly segments and was once considered the “heartland” of the former Lok Sabha Speaker, late Purno A. Sangma, who was also the founding member of the National People’s Party (NPP), one of the allies of the BJP at the Centre, Manipur and Rajasthan. “Meghalaya needs double engine for growth.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gestures during his speech at BJP campaign rally ahead of Meghalaya Assembly elections at Phulbari on Thursday. (PTI) A BJP-led government at the centre and a BJP government in the state,” he said. Modi, who was on his second leg of his election campaign to this Christianmajority state, said the February 27 elections to the 60 member Meghalaya is about freeing the state from scams of the ruling Congress government. “The ruling government is recognized for scams in the recruitments in teachers,” Launching his verbal attacks on Chief Minister Mukul Sangma for his

failure to ensure all-round development, Modi asked, “Why is the Congress government in Meghalaya not discussing development? Why are they not telling the people about their development works? They are only busy in blaming ‘Modi’.” Questioning the Congress for its failure to built all-weather roads, he asked, “What is the reason that even if crores of rupees are released by Delhi for roads, there is no road to be seen in Meghalaya? People from the rural areas of Meghalaya do not know

what a pucca road is. The roads are only fit for doing agriculture here.” “The Chief Minister of Meghalaya (Mukul Sangma) is a doctor himself but look at the condition of health infrastructure in the state. It is in ruins. Women are forced to deliver babies at home, which poses a great threat to the lives of the mother and baby,” he said. Wooing the poor families to vote for BJP, the Prime Minister accused the Meghalaya government of not utilizing the funds al-

located to the state meant for building the house for the poor. On the poor road connectivity in rural areas of Meghalaya, the Prime Minister said that central government has provided around Rs. 470 crore under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana for construction of 1100-Km of road. However, he said Meghalaya government was unable to spend 50 per cent of the work. “We have planned to spend around Rs. 180 crore for building of new Shillong airport. Thus, it will improve the possibilities of industrial development besides generation of employment for common man,” Modi said. He also highlighted about the Saubhagya Yojana which would ensure power for all and Ayushman Bharat which would ensure healthcare for all. Unlike in Nagaland, where the BJP has stitched an alliance with the newly floated Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, the BJP is fighting the assembly polls in Meghalaya in 47 seats all alone.

shot NIA arrests insurgent involved in 2015 Manipur ambush Businessman dead in Guwahati

Moirangthem Nimaichand Meitei (at left and also circled in the group photo) was arrested by NIA. (PTI)

New Delhi, Feb 22 (PTI): The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a member of a banned Manipuri terrorist organisation who was allegedly a part of the team that carried out an audacious attack on an army convoy

in June 2015, in which 18 soldiers were killed and 15 other injured, an official spokesperson said. The details of the place of arrest were not given out by the NIA and the spokesman only said 22-year-old Moirangthem Nimaichand

Meitei was an active cadre of the Kangleipak Communist Party (Noyon) group. Meitei was also in the team that was involved in the ambush near Paraolen village in Chandel district of Manipur on June 4, 2015, he said. This was the worstever terror attack on the army which saw 18 personnel dead and 15 seriously injured. The accused was produced before the special judge on February 20 where he was remanded in seven days of NIA custody. However, sources said the accused had been detained by a combined team of the NIA, Gorkha Rifles and Bishnupur police in Ma-

nipur on February 3 from Ningthoukhong area. The anti-terror probe agency, which investigated the case, had ascertained that the the total number of militants who participated in the attack was 23 out of whom two were killed in the retaliatory action by the Army in Chandel district of Manipur, officials said. Army trucks were attacked with ‘Lathod guns’ and grenades by suspected terrorists of NSCN (Khaplang) and other groups. The militants had formed three groups to carry out the attack and explosive-laden cans were planted alongside the road to maximise the damage, they said.

Guwahati, Feb 22 (IANS): A businessman was shot dead by unidentified assailants here, police said on Thursday. The incident took place at around 8.30 p.m., on Wednesday the four assailants on two motorcycles shot Hemant Chousaria from close range while he was returning home after closing his shop in Kailash Nagar, Hatigaon. The victim was rushed to the Dispur Hospital but was pronounced dead. “We have recovered empty cartridge of 9 mm pistol from the area. We have also recovered a bag from the place of occurrence with Rs 1 lakh cash,” the police said.

Bangladesh fears exodus of Bengalis from Assam

DHAKA, FEB 22 (Agencies): The ongoing process of compiling the National Register of Citizens in Assam may trigger an exodus of Bengalis and create one more Rohingya-like refugee crisis for Bangladesh, senior officials of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government said here on Wednesday. Addressing visiting Indian journalists, they said the process in Assam is threatening India-Bangladesh ties and will be exploited by anti-India elements and Islamic fundamentalists who are challenging the Awami League rule. “Citizenship issue will be another disappointment after the setback on the sharing of water of the

river Teesta. We believe India should think of its friendship with Bangladesh before going ahead with the full implementation of the citizens register in Assam. “If the process leads to deportation of a section of the Bengali population of Assam, it will trigger another Rohingya-like refugee crisis,” said Iqbal Shobhan Chowdhury, media adviser to Prime Minister Hasina. Bangladeshi policymakers are unanimous that the failure to conclude the Teesta water sharing agreement between New Delhi and Dhaka has been disappointing and the ongoing process in Assam will complicate the situation further. Prime Minister Hasina

reflected this sentiment on Tuesday and said, “It’s sad that ‘Didimoni’ (West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) does not want to give the share of Teesta’s water that belongs to us.” These observations have gained significance as a section of the ruling Awami League believes that India has not reciprocated Ms. Hasina’s support on counter-insurgency steps in the northeastern states. They said that the Awami League government under Ms. Hasina, without any expectation of reciprocity, aided India to nab ULFA leaders who had taken refuge in Bangladesh and in Southeast Asia. But a new refugee flow from Assam, will undo years of

MASS RESIGNATION

bilateral cooperation. They said that Bangladesh experienced two major floods in 2017 and the Rohingya crisis has strained its resources and further turmoil will add to the volatility of the country which is heading to the polls by the end of the year. In a frank exchange regarding irritants to bilateral ties, officials said the citizen-related exercise in Assam is reminiscent of the communalism of the 1940s. “If someone has lived in a place for sometime, then he or she is presumed to belong to that place and they should have the freedom to stay where they are

located. But the (exercise reflects the) the two-nation theory and it seems that Muslims are meant to live in Bangladesh and Hindus will live in India, as if Bangladesh is a successor to Pakistan,” said Mashiur Rahman, senior civil servant and Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Ms. Hasina’s party has been in power for nine years and has to counter anti-incumbency factor along with other substantial issues. “India must help us,” said Communication Minister Obaidul Quader urging Delhi to address Dhaka’s concerns.

nalists that the Army chief was “misinformed and misguided”. Ajmal also added he has “full faith” in Rawat and that protecting the country is his job. Addressing a seminar in New Delhi yesterday, the Army chief had also said that a “planned” influx of people from Bangladesh into the Northeast is taking place as part of proxy warfare by Pakistan with support from China with an aim to keep the area disturbed. Meanwhile, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi said if the Army chief ’s statement, as reported in the media, is true, what is the Centre doing? “The government should take appropriate steps in this regard as this will be dangerous not only for Assam and Northeast but for the entire country,” Gogoi told reporters here. He claimed that the central government has completely failed to secure the country’s borders and provide security.

New Delhi, Feb 22 (PTI): An inter-ministerial committee (IMC) on medicinal and aromatic plants has been set up for the north-east and it will suggest actionable measures to generate more livelihood opportunities in the region. The IMC would identify the gaps in the existing mechanism or institutional arrangements, suggest a policy intervention for optimally harnessing the medicinal and aromatic plants

of the north-eastern region, an official statement said here today. The committee will also suggest ways for accelerating the development of the sector, suggest a plan of action for the dovetailing of the schemes and programmes of the ministries and departments concerned. It would also suggest actionable measures to generate more livelihood opportunities, which would lead to the economic transformation of the region,

I tanag a r , F e b 2 2 (PTI): Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu Thursday termed the rape allegations made against him by a woman last week as “false” and “politically motivated” and said he has full faith on the National Commission for Women (NCW) to decide on the merits of the case. A woman had filed a complaint with the National Commission for Women (NCW) alleging that Khandu had raped her in 2008. “I am shocked and saddened by the false allegations against me. I have always conducted myself honourably and with utmost integrity. In my view, these allegations are politically motivated and crafted by my opponents,” Khandu has said in a statement issued by his office yesterday. It is unfortunate that they have resorted to such “dirty tricks” to bring “dis-

Pema Khandu grace” to political life of Arunachal Pradesh, he said. “I have full faith on the authority, before which this matter currently stands, will do justice. There is no doubt that truth will prevail over this mala fide campaign against me,” the chief minister said. Every sensible person should reject and condemn such “lowly acts” of “dirty” politics, he said. The woman had first lodged a complaint against him in December 2015, a few months before Khandu

became the chief minister. Back then, the Itanagar Police made a preliminary enquiry on receipt of the complaint. The complainant then approached the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) with her allegations. The court, however, found no merit in the complaint and dismissed it by mentioning that “the complaint filed under Section 156(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code is devoid of any merit and complainant is not entitled for the orders as prayed for”. “The entire episode is in public domain for scrutiny and the chief minister’s office believes that citizens of the state can now clearly see through the conspiracy being hatched against the CM who is growing in popularity by the day for his strict decisions to root out corruption,” the statement added.

Congress stages walkout of Assam Assembly Guwahati, Feb 22 (PTI): The opposition Congress MLAs Thursday staged a walkout in Assam Assembly when the Speaker did not allow a discussion over their adjournment motion on “deteriorating law and order”. Before the House began its businesses for the day, the Congress submitted an adjournment motion to Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami for a discussion in the wake of the killing of a trader yesterday night in Guwahati. Congress MLA Abdul Khaleque

raised the issue even before starting of the Question Hour. Goswami asked him to sit down saying he will take a decision on it as per rule. After the Question Hour ended, Khaleque and his party colleague Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha again drew attention of the Speaker, who again turned it down. “A businessman was shot dead in the middle of the city. The law and order is collapsing drastically. This is a serious issue,” Khaleque said. With the Speaker refusing to

tion Commission of India to delete all such names from the electoral rolls of Meghalaya state on the principle of “one person, one vote.” “Inclusion of the names of the people of Karbi Anglong in the electoral rolls of Meghalaya is also constitutionally illegal as one person can enroll only in one constituency and can’t become double voters,” the ASDC statement said

Army chief’s statement ‘political and shocking’ Guwahati, Feb 22 (PTI): Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat’s statement on the rapid growth of the AIUDF in Assam is “political and shocking”, party president Badruddin Ajmal said Thursday. By making such a statement, the Army chief has indulged in politics which is against the constitutional mandate given to him, president of All India United Democratic Front tweeted. He tweeted: “Gen Rawat has made a political statement, shocking! Why is it a concern for the Army Chief that a political party, based on democratic and secular values, is rising faster than BJP?” Ajmal’s tweets came in response to Rawat’s statement yesterday that AIUDF’s growth has been “faster” than that of the BJP in the 1980s. The Army chief was referring to reports of increase in Muslim population in several Assam districts. Alternative parties like the AIUDF and the AAP have grown because of the misgovernance of big parties, he added. The MP from Dhubri also tagged the tweets to Twitter handles of Rashtrapati Bhavan and the Prime Minister’s Office asking them to “please take note”. The AIUDF, which was formed in 2005 to champion the cause of the Muslim community, currently has three MPs in the Lok Sabha and 13 MLAs in Assam. Later, Ajmal told jour-

Nagaland Post Vol. XXVIII NO. 77 Dimapur, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2018

Scandal in the capital

I

t was an unprecedented, unwarranted and ugly incident in Delhi. It was a continuing proxy war launched by the political party in power at the Centre against the political party in power at the national capital. When television channels broke the report of the alleged assault on the Delhi chief secretary Anshu Prakash by AAP legislators, it shocked the nation. The occasion was a late night meeting at the residence of the Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal to discuss some urgent matters pertaining to release of ration to card holders. The chief secretary Prakash claimed he was physically beaten up by at least two AAP MLAs. The AAP MLAs however disputed the allegation saying there was no assault only verbal assault because the MLAs were angry with the way in which the Delhi chief secretary responded to their pleas for release of ration cards to around 2.5 lakh card holders. The ration cards were purportedly not cleared with Aadhar therefore the holders were denied rations. The chief secretary also reportedly spiked the anger when he refused to respond on the ground that he was not answerable to either the chief minister or MLAs but only to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. This was supposedly the flash point. However, the other side of the story was that the AAP MLAs were spoiling for a fight as they would have been for quite some time since the top constitutional head, the Lieutenant Governor and the executive head the chief secretary were creating road blocks in the functioning of the AAP government. This situation is totally unacceptable. No matter what people think of babus; they are a necessity to run a government. One can have grievance. A political party can have serious difference with another or an official or a group of them. But using hands to get even is not only criminal but also indicates a low level mind and that too when the chief minister was present. Does this speak good of the chief minister, who says nothing when his MLAs assault the chief secretary? The previous Lieutenant Governor Najeed Jung resigned much ahead of the end of his tenure as he wanted peace away from the almost daily battle of words and court litigations with Arvind Kejriwal and the AAP government. The fact is that after Congress was thrown out of the Centre and the Delhi Union Territory, the BJP and AAP had only each other to fight and that they did. Earlier BJP and AAP used to verbally castigate and abuse the Congress as an almost routine affair. As it is, the Delhi Congress, under Ajay Makjen has put a comical stink, by fully backing the BJP and against the AAP in the case. Whether the AAP MLAs behaved like goons or not, has to be investigated before jumping to conclusions by demanding jail terms. The babus on the other hand, have been thrown in an unenviable position. They are made to adopt a non-cooperative stand and even confront the AAP whenever there is an alibi. Such a situation of babus being egged on by the party in power at the Centre and the party ruling the UT are at perennial loggerheads is an unwholesome situation. This calls for an intervention from the Delhi High Court to resolve the impasse between the executive and the legislature. A clear order has to be issued by the court to put everyone in their respective places.

DailyDevotion The Discipline of Spiritual Perseverance Be still, and know that I am God… —Psalm 46:10

Perseverance is more than endurance. It is endurance combined with absolute assurance and certainty that what we are looking for is going to happen. Perseverance means more than just hanging on, which may be only exposing our fear of letting go and falling. Perseverance is our supreme effort of refusing to believe that our hero is going to be conquered. Our greatest fear is not that we will be damned, but that somehow Jesus Christ will be defeated. Also, our fear is that the very things our Lord stood for— love, justice, forgiveness, and kindness among men— will not win out in the end and will represent an unattainable goal for us. Then there is the call to spiritual perseverance. A call not to hang on and do nothing, but to work deliberately, knowing with certainty that God will never be defeated. If our hopes seem to be experiencing disappointment right now, it simply means that they are being purified. Every hope or dream of the human mind will be fulfilled if it is noble and of God. But one of the greatest stresses in life is the stress of waiting for God. He brings fulfillment, “because you have kept My command to persevere…” (Revelation 3:10). Continue to persevere spiritually.

Post-mortem

Comments On- ‘BJP Sing Praises C Of Early Christian Missionaries’ L

Is bribery a sin?

ocal papers 18 Feb. 2018 carried statement by BJP Leader Ram Madhav in-charge of the Northeast, canvassing for Imtilepden Sangtam in the 52 LongkhimChare Assembly Constituency reported. The BJP Leader (Quoted) “lavishly praising the first Christian missionaries during 1930-40’ for their ‘commendable job in the mission field’ as well as spreading education in the region”. What the BJP Leader said is in principle true, though the spread of the Gospel in the Trans-Dikhu ‘Un-Administered Area’ of erstwhile Naga Hills, now popularly known as the ENPO Area, was by the WNM (Western Nagaland Missionaries) particularly by the Aos. And many of the educated ENPOs have adopted Ao Names though by Tribe they are different from the Missionaries. (Imtilepden is Ao name meaning ‘Chopped off and Gathered from principal Villages’, refer to deeds of Head-hunting days, though the Candidate is a Sangtam). I am taking keen interest at reading BJP propaganda materials these days of wooing the affable Naga to toe the BJP Fold. The News Papers had earlier produced the Congress Party election promise to subsidize Christian Tour to Jerusalem in case they succeed in the Elections. The BJP imitated the Congress and promised to send 50-selected Nagas to Jerusalem every year FREE if the Nagas vote them to Power in Nagaland. The Naga Faithfuls, even Half-Faithfuls and Leaders and Laymen, all take great pride and pleasure in going to the Holy Land. All the political Party Leaders know the Naga desire for the Jerusalem Tour. However, political Parties or Candidates making such cheap propaganda promises during Election time only reveal themselves to the pub-

lic. They mistake the Naga people for a cheap, ignorant, uninformed and easily fooled people. ‘There is a group of ‘NAGA SADHUS’, -the highest Group of Hindu Sadhus in India- they go naked. The NAGA of Nagaland in the Northeast is no Hindu and there is no Sadhu in the Naga. Without either being a higher or lower Caste Hindu, a Naga Man is more Naga than the ‘NAGA SADHU’ of Hinduism is. The Naga is no “Scheduled-Caste nor a “Scheduled Tribe”, he is simply Naga People, pure and simple. Promising to take some Naga to the Holy Land every year, if voted to Power is cheap peanut Politics for the Naga. Rather than fooling the Naga, it exposes their immature mentality and shallow perception in the political Parties Congress or the BJP. What the Naga do not like in the BJP Governments is the latter’s tolerance of the unlawful activities of the Hindu Organizations persecuting the Christians, other minority communities and intolerance on the Low Castes in India. Religion like Hinduism is lauded as National and others are decried as Anti-National in the name of Nationalism. The BJP Governments tolerate and give covering-fire to the Hindutva and Sangh Parivar vigilantes continually violating the Fundamental Rights of the Low Castes, Minorities. They destroy Mosques, Churches, prevents Christians from worshiping in the Church, breaks up Church meetings, prevent foreign Christians leaders from attending Centenaries in the Northeast, kill religious Workers, harass and perpetrate immoral acts on them. These Vigilantes forcefully impose their Food habits on others, Dress codes on the Youth, perform moral polic-

On election, bjp and KK Sema!

(From previous issue) The Congress party legislators which joined the ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) also made a mockery of itself by joining a party which had aligned itself with the BJP, which proves their total lack of principles. Thus, basically, overall no party in Nagaland hold any credibility. It’s just that through the capability, charm and money power of certain leaders, it might be able to have some semblance of support. The BJP would still bank on Prime Minister Modi to deliver in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland. BJP might also be looked up by some to bring in the much needed developmental works in Nagaland. But BJP would have to convince voters why Christmas day had to be selected for ‘Good Governance Day’ and Good Friday for ‘Digital India day’. When one observes the footsteps of BJP and its affiliates, leaders like Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho, the General Secretary of Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) would have genuine reasons to feel insecure about the future of his flock. Khekiye K Sema (IAS Retd.) the social Activist cum anti-corruption crusader, has added an interesting tale to this year’s election. While the champion of the ACAUT movement might realise how difficult it is to be really ‘clean’ in the Nagaland Election, he does offer a viable option to voters. Of course, there would be those who would be

disappointed with his decision to join politics, which would obviously weaken the Civil Society’s movement. But Nagaland is bad today because good people have remained silent and aloof for far too long, and KK Sema’s decision to contest might be looked as a bold step in the right direction. But fighting from the Congress ticket would also be a disadvantage because, the Congress, in a large part has defunct units which would take time to recuperate. In the 5th Ghaspani-II constituency from which he is contesting, he would also face two equally competitive candidates. While Zhaleo Rio, the incumbent MLA (now in NDPP) might not have much to show in terms of developmental work, one can’t blame him completely since the government had been in a disarray right from the beginning of his term. But his support structure in the villages are still strong. Dr. Kevingulie Khro, the other candidate from NPF, would also put up a good fight because he was the one who had done the ground work for quite some time and his approachability would also win hearts easily. Lastly, one should be prepared for surprises in this year’s election results, and we might see some old enemies sitting together again. That’s Nagaland, and our leaders best explain the type of state we live in. (Concluded) David Hanneng, Assistant Professor, Tetso College

ing in the Streets, Cinemas and Theaters, and restrict free expression of Arts and Writings. Nagaland has a new political Party –NDPP- (Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party), suddenly popped up, allied with the BJP. It is not by a specific Naga Tribe that brought the BJP to Nagaland. The Party has not done anything illegal, though it has given twenty Nagaland Assembly Seats to their socalled coalition Partner before the Government of Nagaland is formed and its new Chief Ministerial candidate sings praises unto the virtues of its alliance, claiming the BJP is out to protect Christian Religion in Nagaland. It is because of the Naga gullibility for such self-serving politics that Nagaland is in such perplexity, indecisiveness and directionless condition and has grown so uncomfortable with the promises of the politicians. In support of the comments, let me quote the then BJP Secretary, Northeastern States Coordinating Council, H.Q. Uzanbazar, Guwahati,-Mr BP. Acharya, . He wrote the accounts of the BJP Agenda in the Northeast to his higher authority( Q u o t e d ) “ We h a v e achieved our avowed object of piercing Trishul in the chest of the so called ‘Lord’ Christ. In the Garikhana, which is an important area of Shillong, our fore-fathers had converted the house of U Mul Singh who was the right hand of the tribal leader and hero, U Throt Singh into a temple..... We have already settled 40,000 of ...... in the State who have the benefit of dual citizenship. As per our plan, we are to secure job for at least one member of every family either in State or Central Govt or in the Army. To an extent, we have achieved success. As these settlers have come

here after 1987, they will provide us with Vote Bank of our party in the elections. It would have been commendable to chalk out similar programes in the Christian majority States of the Northeast such as Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Christian majority pockets in Assam.” N a g a s h ave n o t h i n g against the Hindu Religion. If any Naga, on his or her own volition becomes Hindu or Muslim, it is their own free choice and Naga Christians or Pagans have nothing more to say than that. Naga women have married Hindus and Muslims but the Naga has no culture of Honor-killing. The NDPP has many elite candidates; a rich number of former bureaucrats joined Politics before 2 years of their retirement, biological brothers are together in the Party, well connected with super-Contractors and Politicians. T h e Pa r t y p r o m i s e s –Change, Peace, Stability and Development, including an end to Corruption in Nagaland. What beautiful and nice words but all the Political Parties promise the same thing. It is actually ‘OLD WINE IN NEW BOTTLES’ the Scripture teaches its Believers to be careful about. Development, Change and Peace will come to Nagaland sooner or later eventually but Corruption will not end unless JUSTICE and HONESTY is a political Agenda. Nagaland needs Justice and Honesty more than Development and Change. If Justice and Honesty is the political Agenda, then Development and Change will come naturally like the summer coming after the spring. It is unfathomable as to what political Principles, Programs and Agenda the NDPP shares in common with the BJP; a Party who’s Agenda opposes the Gospel of Christ in the Northeast. Thepfulhouvi Solo

lean Election movement spearheaded by the churches and civil societies educate the citizens of the state not to buy and sell votes. Many believers and concerned citizens are not taking bribes. They know that it is evil to sell their votes. Those who have taken bribe have sold themselves to the candidates. They are purchased like domestic animals. They are not they owned, they belong to someone who bribed them. They become valueless, voiceless and powerless. When the candidates win the election, they do not have to help those who have taken bribe because they are already paid. The contesting candidates know this very well. In spite of knowing the evil of bribery, the contesting candidates seem to be competing in buying votes in order to win the election. They distribute money to individuals and households. However, Clean Election Movement has a good impact. Indeed, it is helping the contesting candidates. Many committed Christians refuse to take money from the candidates and party workers. They signed Clean Election Pledge Card and sticking to their commitment to God. God must be very pleased with them. But those who are not born again Christians are demanding more money from contesting candidates. They seem to be costlier. What does the word of God says about bribery or buying and selling votes? The word of God clearly states that it is evil. Exodus 23:8 says, “You shall not take bribe, for a bride blinds the officials, and the cause of those who are in the right.” Deut. 27:25 states, “curse be anyone who takes a bribe to shed innocent blood.” Bribery is evil and thus it is a curse. It is a sin for it breaks the law of God. It further says. “a gift in secret averts anger; and a concealed bribe in the bosom, strong wrath” (Proverbs 21:14). The anger of the Lord is upon those who give bribe and those who take bribe. Because bribery prevents justice, it takes away development fund; it takes away the share of the poor and needy people. Those who pay bribe and take bribe secretly take away public money that is for the development of good roads, good educational institutions, good hospitals and for the improvement of our economy. Therefore, it is a sin and God’s wrong wrath will be upon those people. Only few days left to cast votes, candidates and party workers may come to your home to plea for votes. They may give you Rs. 5000/to Rs. 30,000/- or less or more. When they come to us let us pray with them. But do not take bribe. We decide and vote for the candidate we think best for the society. It would be very righteous before God that we do not to sell our votes. We are created in the image of God. We are redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ. We belong to God. It will be a curse to sell ourselves. Let us not make ourselves cheap like purchasable commodity. May God guard us from the temptation of bribery. Yiepetso Wezah, Mission Colony, T. Divers Temptations in Nagaland (James 1: 2 K1V)

J

ames realized that his readers were undergoing severe trials, and wanted them to realize how will faith react under trial. He aware that all kinks of temptations would beset those first-century Christians, and of course the same is also true in our land today. The most crucial word in James 1:2 is “temptations.” The word “temptation” simply mean “testing’, This testing can be used either in the positive sense of testing to bring about that which is good or in the negative sense of testing to bring about that which is bad. The context must reveal which use of word testing is intended. The test result and award will be given to the concern person after the test. Your award depends on whether you stand the test today or not. God allow trials or testings for various reasons, but it is Satan and the flesh who tempt us to sin. Trials are not a mark of God’s disfavor. Trials do not mean that God has turned His back on us. Instead, when we profess that we have faith, we should expect testings to come into our lives to reveal the solidarity of our faith. We, the Nagas are in the divers temptations. All of us, called ourselves “Believers of Jesus Christ”. Let everyone pose a question, “am I really a believer of Jesus Christ?” “Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.” No believer of Jesus Christ, should ever blame Jesus Christ when

you are tempted to do evil. Jesus Christ never tempted you to do anything evil-and He never brings a test into someone’s life with the purpose of enticing him to do what is evil. When testings come, each believers of Christ should be on guard so that he is not driven from the way of life which is in Christ. In the days of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, he erected a huge golden image and ordered every person to worship it. Those failing to worship the image would be immediately thrown into a blazing furnace, the penalty he gave. The three Jewish hostages: Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego stood strong in their faith not to bow

down to the idol (Daniel 3:1-16). They firmly stated, “0 Nebuchadnezzar... If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to save us from it, and he will rescue us from your hand, 0 king. But even if he does not, we want you to know, 0 king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” (Daniel 3: 16-18. NIV) This is the faith and stand of the believers of Christ in front of the tests and temptations. God saved them in the fire (Daniel 3: 19-27). Where are we today? What is your stand as far as your faith is concern? Are we strong enough before this huge golden image of our day?

Are we willing to sacrifice our faith for development, money or fame? Our faith is not to be compromised with anything in the world. May our God tell us one day, “Well done”, you have stood strong in trials and triumph over the tests that came across your way. Some people blame God for their sin, “could God not have made a man that did not sin?” Yes, He could have, but God wanted a creature who could serve Him because of love rather than because he could not do otherwise. Sin comes from the heart, not from the environment of an individual. Rev. Nungoyi Ithiisoh, Naga United Village; Dimapur

Sir,

A Tribute To Billy Graham

The news of Dr. Billy Graham’s demise brings immense sense of loss. An unparalleled beauty adorned with uncommon qualities, yet so humble and simple was Billy Graham. He was calm but firm, zealous in evangelism but respectful in dealing, a public man but a personal friend to many. Undoubtedly, he was “the” evangelist of the twentieth century, whose life touched millions of lives across the globe, including our shattered Nagaland. Rose to worldwide fame, but returned it all to Jesus. He will be remembered by the world, and will remain an unmatched inspiration to those who would as well choose to serve his Jesus. Billy Graham had made a remarkable impression on Kohima with his “Billy Graham Evangelistic Crusade” in 1972, which elderly folks can fondly recall. His unquestionable love for Jesus, untainted integrity and unswerving commitment to Jesus Christ are his trademarks. Amidst the loss and earthly sadness, we ought to celebrate this great life for who he was, fashioned by God – a man of God! And be thankful for such gift of God to our time. As the earthly things grew dimmer and heaven became brighter for him this day, I believe his dearest Savior and Lord Jesus had readily embraced him with these loving words – “Very well done! My friend” – and cheered by hosts of grateful people there at his homecoming! What a life lived for God! What a treasure for the church! What a testimony that a life soaked in the Holy Spirit can become! Billy Graham will be missed dearly. V. Atsi Dolie, Mission Compound, Kohima

No proposal to merge 4G speed in India slowest in world 86% of bank frauds tied to BSNL, MTNL: Manoj Sinha loans; 99% in case of PNB linked to advances. According to experts and bankers, advancesrelated frauds result out of breach of trust and contract, and involve misuse of letters of credit or guarantees, submission of forged or fake documents to avail loans and mortgaging of assets that don’t exist or have been pledged elsewhere and so on. Pinkerton, a private investigation firm that has worked with multiple banks, including Public Sector Banks (PSBs), has found that in its experience, the most popular modus operandi for such frauds include: Colluding with bank officials; paper forgery; using same collateral for obtaining loans; fake know-your-customer (KYC) documents; floating new firms while hiding previous ones; fictitious sales and beefing up of transactions et al. Prof Charan Singh, former RBI Chair Professor at the IIM-B, says: “So long as there is money, the greed to obtain it in whichever way possible cannot be rid from the system. But what the government and the banks can do is install systems that minimise such frauds. We need an overhauling, from period transfers of all employees in banks to making top

management and directors liable, there needs to be a complete cleansing of the system.” A working paper titled “Frauds in the Indian Banking Industry,” published by Prof Singh and his associates points out: “...Big frauds aren’t so easy to commit and often results because bank officials collude with borrowers and sometimes even with officials of third parties such as advocates or chartered accountants (CAs).” It goes on to say that third parties such as the CAs or the advocates often get away as it is nearly impossible for the banks to prove criminal intent on the part of such persons due to various reasons such as lack of clear understanding of legal matters to bankers, and lack of expertise and legal advice on this subject, and unwillingness to reveal some sensitive data to courts/ public domain. While agreeing with these observations, Netrika Consulting Managing Director Sanjay Kaushik said that such frauds indicate a larger systemic issue that needs addressing professionally, using globally-accepted tools and best practices and that mere troubleshooting after a scam has been unearthed won’t take the system too far.

New Delhi, Feb 22 (PTI): Telecom Minister Manoj Sinha Thursday said there are no plans at present to merge BSNL and MTNL, but asserted that the strategic plan outlined for promoting synergy among state-owned telecom firms will strengthen and benefit both the organisations. “There is no thinking in government on merging the two. But we are taking steps to ensure that collaboration between MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd) and BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd) strengthens and benefits both the organisations,” Sinha said. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event to unveil the strategic plan for telecom and organisation under Department of Telecom. panies and organisations in the sector for promoting greater operational synergy among them, including effective utilisation of human resources as well as land and buildings. Asked whether the telecom ministry will intervene in the ongoing face-off between established private operators under COAI and telecom regulator Trai over the latter’s policies and regulations, the Minister pointed out that the regulator is “independent”. “Trai is an independent regulator. Whatever the ministry has to do, it will do so with fairness and without bias,” he said. Mobile operators under the aegis of COAI have alleged that decisions by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) have put all but one operator at a huge disadvantage, and that its regulations had distorted the market.

We have seen slippage in investments, which are drying up due to losses,” one of the top infrastructure providers said, requesting anonymity. While Jio has launched pan-India 4G services, others were literally forced to follow suit. Airtel is also giving 4G on a pan-India basis, while Idea Cellular covers the country, except Delhi and Kolkata. Vodafone is currently giving the service in 17 circles. Concerns over poor service and slower speed have also been raised by the government, as it has started offering a variety of services online and is pushing digital payments in a big way.

NEW DELHI, Feb 22 (PTI): The Reserve Bank’s new norms for overhauling the mechanism to deal with bad loans is aimed at speeding up the NPA resolution, but would undermine the banking sector earnings in the near-term, credit rating agency Fitch said Thursday. However, stronger regulatory efforts to clean-up bad loan problems, combined with planned recapitalisation of state banks, could help support a recovery in the sector over the medium term, the US-based agency said in a statement. Regulators appear increasingly impatient with the slow resolution of NPL stock, which has prolonged the

Giving out reasons for a slower network speed in India despite a wider 4G reach, the study blamed capacity constraints on network. Though 4G is available for around 86% of the time people access the internet, “4G networks lack the capacity to deliver connection speed much faster than 3G”, it said. The telecom industry in India is staring at a financial nightmare, with most of the companies either deep in the red or just managing to stay profitable. The onslaught of fierce competition from 4G-only Reliance Jio saw Vodafone and Idea Cellular slip into losses, while Airtel saw profits shrink massively. Companies that provide network infrastruc-

The BJP on Thursday staged a protest outside Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia’s residence here against the alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash and demanded Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s resignation. Hundreds of Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers assembled outside Sisodia’s residence on Mathura Road and raised slogans against the Aam

ernment. The protest was led by Delhi BJP General Secretary Kuljeet Singh Chahal. Addressing the workers, Chahal said: “Kejriwal and his party leaders must apologise to Prakash for their behaviour.” He also accused the AAP government and Kejriwal of not acting against his MLAs who allegedly assaulted the Chief Secretary. “They are promoting urban naxalism

city. This kind of lawlessness was never seen before in the city. “Thus the Chief Minister and his ministers must resign,” he said. The BJP protest came in the wake of the alleged assault on Prakash during a meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence on Monday night. Prakash has alleged that he was beaten up by Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan and another MLA in

the presence of Kejriwal. The Delhi Police has arrested Khan and Deoli MLA Prakash Jarwal. The Delhi BJP workers also staged protests at several places in the city demanding the dismissal of all the AAP MLAs including the disqualified MLAs. Meanwhile, Delhi BJP spokesperson and son of the first Delhi Chief Minister Madanlal Khurana, Harish Khurana, along with party workers protested outside the AAP Moti Nagar MLA’s office. Khurana told IANS: “We took out a bike rally in Moti Nagar constituency over present administrative situation in the national capital. “The way Kejriwal government is behaving, it is clear that the entire administration has been stalled. “And if the top official of the Delhi government can be attacked inside the Chief Minister’s residence then one can imagine how much a common man is safe on the streets of Delhi,” he said. He added that in the Moti Nagar constituency, the people do not get proper water or electricity.

Palaniswami asked to meet PM over Cauvery issue

Pakistani artists should be temporarily banned: Union Minister

CHENNAI, FEB 22 (IANS): DMK leader M.K.Stalin on Thursday said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami along with leaders of various political parties should meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urge him to set up a Cauvery Management Board. Speaking at the all party meeting held at the state secretariat here, Stalin said the state should put sufficient pressure on the central government to set up the Cauvery Management Board within six weeks. According to Stalin, the Tamil Nadu government should also explore legal avenues to get a higher allocation of the Cauvery river water as the Supreme Court has cut down the state’s share by 14.75 thousand million cubic feet (TMC). The Supreme Court on February 16 reduced Tamil Nadu’s share of the Cauvery river water to 177.25 TMC, down from 192 TMC allocated by a tribunal in 2007. Stalin said the state government should form a different ministry for water resources and also come out with a separate budget for agriculture.

suffer and not the Pakistani actor.” Supriyo said that he spoke as an Indian first and that a stand needs to be made on temporarily banning Pakistani artistes in Bollywood. “Time probably says that we might want to exercise some restraint when it comes to using Pakistani artistes in our films,” he said, adding that taking a stand is important and it is now for people of Bollywood to decide. But will it be a permanent stand? “I can’t say if it will be a permanent or a temporary stand. It depends on people... I can’t say... I don’t know what the time limit or frame is,” replied Supriyo. Asked if he will bring in a private members bill to ban Pakistani artistes, Supriyo said: “No, I would not do that. What I had said, I said in a public domain. I am not the only parliamentarian, there are more. Every one is listening. I am the junior most parliamentarian. Like I said, my morals say I am an artiste and artistes have no boundaries. But morals shouldn’t come in saying what is right. I think we should take a stand.” “I personally won’t do this,” he added.

CBI questioning enters CBI busts Whatsapp-based global 4th day in Rotomac case child porn racket; Admin arrested

NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): The CBI on Thursday continued questioning Rotomac owner Vikram Kothari and his son Rahul in connection with the Rs 3,695 crore loan default case. A senior Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official confirmed that the two were being questioned again on Thursday. This is the four th consecutive day of their questioning. On the first two days the probe agency quized them and searched their residences and office premises in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. The Wednesday’s questioning here went on for over nine hours as the Income Tax Department attached four immovable properties

of Kothari, three in Kanpur and one in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Besides the two, the pen company owner’s wife Sadhana, staff and house keeper were also questioned after the Bank of Baroda filed a complaint of loan default against the Kotharis on Sunday night. Several belongings, including their laptops and mobile phones, were confiscated by the agency on Tuesday. A consortium of seven banks had extended multicrore credits to the Kanpurbased firm and its related companies from 2008 onwards. Kothari is the Chairman and Managing Director of Rotomac, while his wife and son are directors of the company.

NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): The CBI on Thursday registered a case and booked five persons on charges of uploading and circulating child pornography through a Whatsapp group that had 119 members from both India and abroad. Calling the activity a “global crime”, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) busted the racket on the basis of intelligence inputs. The members of the group -- KidsXXX -- included members of foreign countries like the US, China, Pakistan and Brazil, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Nigeria, Mexico and New Zealand, besides India. Administrators of the Whatsapp group were identified as Nikhil Verma, Satyendra Chauhan, Nafees Raja, Zahid and Adarsh. A case has been filed against them under Section 67-B of the Information Technology Act and the provisions of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). One of the administrators, 20-year-old

unemployed B.Com graduate Nikhil Verma has been arrested from his hometown Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh, CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said. The Whatsapp child pornography group had been active for about two years. The central agency is planning to write to the investigators of the foreign countries concerned, whose members are part of the Whatsapp group. The minor victims in the videos and photos are, however, yet to be identified, the CBI spokesperson said. The CBI on Tuesday also searched the premises of the group’s administrators in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra and recovered computers, hard disks, phones and incriminating videos and photos of children being sexually abused. The CBI official said they are investigating all angles in this case including a well-organised racket shooting children’s sexual abuse videos and selling them in the virtual world.

ABVP members manhandled me: DU AISA head JNU entrance results yet to be announced: Varsity official

NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): All India Students Association (AISA) head at Delhi University on Thursday alleged that she was manhandled by several male students at Satyawati College during a programme on women’s safety. Kawalpreet Kaur, the AISA chief, alleged that the group from Satyawati, consisting of BJP youth wing ABVP members tried to sabotage her speech on Thursday by raising slogans against her and her group. They threw her phone away when she tried to capture the attack on camera, Kaur said.

Kawalpreet Kaur

“When the talk was about to get over, many Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad members gathered in the auditorium and started disrupting the event. “They manhandled the professors and were after me and when police came to

rescue me they asked them -- Where are you taking her? We will take her life,” Kaur was quoted in her message on Whatsapp groups as saying. The ABVP is one of the political opponents of AISA, the student wing of the Communist Party of India Liberation. One of the eyewitnesses said it began with hooting during her speech. A group of students started hooting and howling during the speech but teachers brushed it off saying students do such things. Soon after, some 15-20 people came inside and started raising slogans against Kawalpreet...

NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): A Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) official on Thursday dismissed the news circulating about the declaration of entrance results as “misinformation”, saying that no such announcement has been made by the administration as of now. “I don’t know where they got this information that results are already out. This is all misinformation,” Milap Punia, Director Admissions, told IANS. He said results for the courses where viva voce is prescribed will be an-

nounced by next week and overall results by March last week. “We advise applicants to keep checking the JNU website... If result is declared, it will be highlighted in the admissions section,” the official added. Several media outlets published the news that the JNU entrance results -- exams for which were conducted between December 27 and December 30-- were declared on Wednesday. About one lakh candidates appeared for the entrance exams for admission in several courses at the premier university.

AAP minister detained for protest against Chief Secretary NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): AAP minister Rajendra Pal Gautam was detained here on Thursday as he was moving towards Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence along with some party workers to protest against the “casteist remarks” made by Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash. This came two days after the Aam Aadmi Party’s Ambedkar Nagar MLA Ajay Dutt filed a police complaint against Prakash for making the remarks during a meeting at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence on Monday night. A party official said the protest was also called against the “biased inquiry” done by the Delhi Police against their MLAs -- Amanatullah Khan and

Prakash Jarwal -- who were taken into judicial custody on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting the Chief Secretary. AAP minister Imran Hussain was manhandled at the Delhi Secretariat by a crowd protesting against the alleged assault and his Personal Secretary Himanshu Singh was beaten up, according to multiple video clips from the Secretariat. The party complained that no action was taken against those who attacked Hussain and his aide. The Chief Secretary on Tuesday alleged that he was beaten up by the two MLAs in the presence of Kejriwal at the Chief Minister’s residence on Monday night, where he had been called for an emergency meeting.

Babul Supriyo

NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): Union Minister Babul Supriyo on Wednesday called for a temporary ban on Pakistani artists for working in the Hindi film industry. Supriyo, a singerturned-politician, had said Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s voice in the song “Ishtehar” from “Welcome To New York” must be removed and dubbed by someone else as he was not able to comprehend the need or desire to cross the border for entertainment content at a time when tensions on the India-Pakistan border had escalated. Asked why the issue was not raised when singer Atif Aslam crooned a number for “Tiger Zinda Hai”, Supriyo said in a press conference: “’Dil Diyan Gallan’ is nice song. There is another nice song sung by Atif in ‘Bajrangi

Bhaijaan’... My morals as an artist or sensibilities, I agree that artistes have no boundary. “I definitely want to believe that and I do as an artiste but having said that where our soldiers are being brutally killed and their bodies are mutilated... If we can stop Pakistani players playing in IPL.... At a time when we have cornered Pakistan, even US is one step away from declaring Pakistan a terrorist nation.... maybe it would have been nice if Bollywood showed solidarity and took a stand...” Noting that the entire issue of banning Pakistani artists began with filmmaker Karan Johar’s 2016 film “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, he said: “(At that time) I had said that if a film worth Rs 100 crore is made and a lot of money has been put in by our producers that time, an Indian producer will

Contours of solutions to Delhi sealing issue almost ready: Puri NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (PTI): Union minister Hardeep Singh Puri today said “contours of the solution” to the problem of the ongoing sealing drive in the national capital was “almost ready” and asked for “slight patience” to provide relief to traders. The traders in Delhi have been protesting against the sealing of commercial establishments r unning from residential areas or premises. The housing and urban affairs minister said the Delhi Development Authority (DDA had attended to 700800 formal submissions by various stakeholders on the proposed amendments in the Delhi master plan 2021 to ease the problem, besides having an oral hearing to the suggestions and grievances of the public. “Work is more or less complete and I can assure you that we have contours of the solution to the problems of the Delhi almost ready,” he told reporters on the sidelines of an event here. Noting that the sealing

in Delhi was carried out on the directions of the apex court, Puri said the authorities concerned, including the housing and urban affairs ministry and DDA, would file an affidavit in the court regarding the matter. He said the DDA has also approved proposed changes in the Delhi master plan 2021. “It is all work in progress. All I request is slight patience,” the minister said. The DDA had proposed to amend the master plan by providing uniform Floor Area Ratio (FAR) for shop-cum-residence plots or complexes on par with residential plots, as given to properties on mixed-use street. The FAR is the ratio

of a building’s total floor area (gross floor area) to the size of the piece of land on which it is built. “The immediate problem (in Delhi) was created due to sealing which was carried out on the directions of the Supreme Court. All I can tell you that the Delhi LG, the DDA vice chairman, myself and my ministry’s secretary and other senior officers have been working non-stop for the last 15 days (on it),” he said. The Supreme Court had earlier observed that the rule of law over sanction to construct buildings had “completely broken down” in Delhi and expressed concern over illegal construction.

ACAUT condemns poll malpractices, violence (From p-1) They said the “incidence is nothing but utter madness and Nagas ought to be ashamed of it.” ACAUT demanded that administration immediately enforce 144 CRPC in sensitive areas to prevent the reoccurrence of such untoward incidents. ACAUT also condemned the village councils that had declared village candidates and also the alleged involvement of certain NPGs that were forcing village councils to do so. ACAUT requested the NPGs to probe such allegations and ensure that none of their cadre members violate the NPGs’ standing “AZHA”. ACAUT also noted that the administration “should have no difficulty to act upon” the village councils that had publicly declared their endorsement of certain candidates. The duo also urged upon the administration and ECI to deploy more security to villages that had declared “village candidates” so that voters are not “discouraged, threatened or ambushed on the way to the polling station”. ACAUT reiterated its stand for “Solution before election” but the BJP’s U-turn had compelled Nagas to choose elections which has now brought out the worst in the Nagas. ACAUT appealed to voters to pay heed to their good conscience during the process of the elections.

PM’s speech a repeat of 2014: Cong (From p-1) Bordoloi asserted that the Congress party was very respectful to the aspirations of the people of Nagaland. As a national party, the Congress party was ready and confident to fulfil the desires of the Naga people for a “Solution before election”, but the carpet was dragged out from under them by Rio’s NDPP and BJP, he alleged. He also alleged that every independent civil society and organization of Nagaland were looking forward to clean elections, however, money and muscle power were being brought into play in the elections. Bordoloi pointed out that the NDPP and BJP alliance were spending huge

amounts of money for advertisements in print media and the electronic media of Nagaland. Promising that the Congress party would vigilantly focus on its commitment to contest clean elections, Bordoloi said that the party would put up a spirited fight. He expressed hope that the people of Nagaland would decide with perception of democratic values. Also briefing the media persons, AICC observer, Capt. Praveen Davar alleged that the BJP party has been trying to gain a strong foothold in the North East in attempts to sow Hindutva agendas. He was confident the people of Nagaland would not vote for BJP who he

accused of trying to dilute the secular ideology of Nagaland. “Modi is trying to change the culture, the ethos of Nagaland”, Praveen stated. He was sure that the people of Nagaland will realise this and would not let the BJP ideology seep into Nagaland. He also said that NDPP leader and former chief minister, Neiphiu Rio had been justifying his alliance with the BJP despite the BJP’s track record of communalism which, according to him, was well known in the country. He said that Rio would regret his decision to align with the saffron outfit and opined that Rio had dug his own political grave.

Dr. Shürho, TR Zeliang step up Modi promises development and solution attack on NDPP-BJP alliance (From p-1)

(From p-1)

Dr. Shürho mocks at NDPP’s slogan Dr. Shürhozelie said the new government would “try to build the fair name of the government.” NPF president also appealed to the gathering not to be swayed by money but use their precious vote sensibly. Dr. Shürhozelie said that despite atrocities and violence meted out to Christians across the nation, Nagaland state upholds Article 25 of the constitution which safeguards freedom to profess, practice and propagate his own religion. However, he lamented that Christians do not enjoy such right in most of the BJP-ruled states where the church leaders, pastors face harassment every day and missionaries from abroad could not enter India freely. He also cited recent denial of Visa to one of the missionaries from World Baptist Alliance to India. Admitting that NPF had alliance with BJP for the last 14 years, Dr. Shürhozelie, however, said that in 2018 they became aggressive by asking for more seat share. At last, he said BJP succumbed to the NDPP offer for 20 seats. In his address, MP Rajya Sabha, KG Kenye, said told the gathering not to regret for the next five years by electing the wrong person. He said for the last 55 years NPF stood by Naga issue and would continue to advocate for permanent peace and solution no matter whether NPF governed the state or remained in the opposition. NPF candidate from 9 Kohima Town A/C, Dr. Tseilhoutuo, also spoke at the campaign programme.

BJP-NDPP threat to Nagas: CM Attacking NDPP chief ministerial candidate Neiphiu Rio, Zeliang questioned the achievements under his chief ministership for 11 years. “Instead of securing central funds for development, he had landed state with 1234 cr rupees deficit. For fear of such misappropriation of huge amount, he tried to run away from the State. He had misused funds allotted under 13th Finance Commission. However, under 14th Finance Commission my government managed to overcome the crisis and development continues,” Zeliang said. Zeliang also alleged that Rio was not sincere, saying he tried to destroy the existence of NPF before he shifted to NDPP. “Political tremor began in the state when he attempted to become a union minister but failed and tried to return to state politics,” Zeliang was quoted as saying by NPF press and information cell. Meanwhile, Zeliang expressed confidence that NPF would retain power in Nagaland with supports from its allies. He informed that NPP which is fielding 25 candidates have signed an agreement with NPF for coalition. “Other parties including independents are also talking with us for coalition”. In this regard, Zeliang appealed to the electorates to vote in favour of the NPF, which he said protects the interests of the Nagas. Zeliang also cautioned the voters to be wise while voting and know which political party would safeguard the interests of the Nagas. He said it was the NPF with cock symbol that stood for Naga political solution since its inception in 1963.

Modi credited the Nagas with having greatly contributed to nation building in diverse fields and assured the state that the Naga dignity and way of life would be respected and secured. According to him, the Centre was according special priority to the North Eastern region through efforts to enhance its prosperity. “Our government is committed to ensure allround development of the North Eastern states”, he said. The Prime Minister stated that in addition to the “Act East Policy”, the Central government had adopted the “Transformation by Transportation” policy and introduced the ‘NE Special Infrastructure Development’ scheme to advance infrastructural development of the power, telecom and road sectors in the region. Highlighting the accomplishments and proposed developmental activities of his government for the region, Modi stated that in less than four years, the length of National highways has been increased from 1,000 km to 1,500 km in the state and right now work on projects worth about Rs, 6,000 crores was being carried out. An additional amount of more than Rs. 10,000 crores will be invested for constructing better roads in the next 3-4 years, he said. More than Rs. 5,500 crores is being spent towards new railway connectivity including Rs. 3,000 crores

Nirav’s PNB fraud started in 2008, arrested bank officials tell CBI NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): The practice of illegally issuing Letters of Undertaking (LoUs) and Foreign Letter of Credit (FLCs) and then rolling them over to favour Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi groups started in 2008 and continued till these were discovered in January this year, according to CBI officials. The illicit activities resulting in fraud of Rs 11,300 crore occurred under the nose of top Punjab National Bank officials but they claimed to be unaware of the scam. The revelation came to the fore during questioning by CBI officials of Rajesh Jindal, who was holding the charge of Mumbaibased PNB’s Brady House Branch between August 2009 and May 2011, Gokul Nath Shetty, a retired Deputy Manager from the same branch who retired in May 2017, Bechu B. Tiwari (Chief Manager, in charge of Forex Department), Yashwant Joshi (Scale II manager of Forex Department) and Prafful Sawant (Scale I officer, export). The officials said they merely continued with the practice that started in 2008. It was not immediately clear who was in charge of the Forex De-

partment when the illegal practice began. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials said the alleged multi-crore fraud by issuing LOUs and FLCs for sanction of loan to diamantaire Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi’s group of firms continued during Jindal’s tenure. Jindal, posted as GM Credit at PNB’s Head Office in New Delhi, was heading the second largest branch of the bank when the practice of issuing the LoUs without sanctioned limits continued. Arrested on Tuesday night after his day-long questioning in Mumbai, he was the 12th accused to be held in the case so far. The CBI investigators had managed to get his custody till March 5 from the special

CBI court on Wednesday. Tiwari, Joshi and Sawant were also arrested on Monday for their alleged role in the scam and will remain in police custody till March 3. All five PNB officials arrested so far were part of the forex department at the bank’s Brady House branch at the time of the fraud, said officials, adding these employees, in collaboration with the staff and associates of the firms headed by Nirav Modi and Choksi, committed wrongdoings for personal gains. The first FIR in the scam registered on January 31 alleged that Shetty and a single window operator Manoj Kharat, during their forex department posting, fraudulently issued eight LoUs (which are a form of

Sushma Swaraj, Canadian Foreign Minister hold strategic dialogue

Chrystia Freeland and Sushma Swaraj.

NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): Ahead of Friday’s India-Canada bilateral summit, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland held a strategic dialogue here on Thursday covering a wide range of bilateral cooperation issues. In a tweet, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted that the two leaders “had wide ranging discussions on strength-

ening relations in trade and investment, security and cyber security, energy, people to people contacts and other relevant bilateral and regional issues.” Freeland arrived here on Wednesday evening ahead of the bilateral summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Justin Trudeau. Thursday’s meeting was held amid wide speculation of Modi and his government cold-shouldering

Trudeau during his eightday state visit to India that started on February 17. Ties between New Delhi and Ottawa have been frosty in recent times as Canada is being seen as offering a platform to separatists demanding an independent Khalistan. The visiting dignitary and his family have visited Agra, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Amritsar but Modi has not yet issued any welcome statement or tweet. While Modi did not accompany Trudeau to Ahmedabad, a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh at Amritsar on Wednesday was organised only at the last moment. During the meeting, Singh handed over a list of nine Canada-based operatives alleged to have been involved in hate crimes in Punjab by financing and supplying weapons for terrorist activities, and also engaged in trying to radicalise youth and children in the state. Canada is home to around 1.2 million people of Indian origin.

It added that the funds raised for import bills were not utilised for such purposes in many cases. PNB’s employee Tiwari, in his capacity as Chief Manager, was to monitor Shetty’s transactions. However, Tiwari told the interrogators that during 2015-17, he did not monitor the fraudulent and illegal LoUs issued by Shetty. An offcial close to the investigation said that Tiwari issued three circulars on February 19, 2016, February 7 and March 14, 2017, purportedly for the sake of keeping a check on the LoUs sent through the SWIFT code of the PNB’s Brady House Branch without any name. However, he neither followed it up nor took any steps to see why his instructions were not followed by Shetty, Joshi or Sawant. “Tiwar’s deliberate acts of omissions led to the continuance of concealment and large scale liabilities of PNB to the foreign banks,” said the official.

Delhi govt staff to observe 5-min silence as protest NEW DELHI, FEB 22 (IANS): Delhi government employees will observe a five-minute silence outside their respective offices every working day till steps are taken to “ensure their safety and dignity”, the IAS body said here on Thursday. The decision to observe the silent protest during lunch break, came two days after Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash alleged that he was beaten up by two Aam Aadmi Party MLAs in the presence of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. The alleged assault took place at the Chief Minister’s residence on Monday midnight, where Prakash was summoned for an emergency meeting. Following the allegation, the IAS Association on Tuesday took the decision that officers would not meet or talk even over the phone to the Chief Minister, his ministers or MLAs till Kejriwal apologised and took action. “The assault on the Chief Secretary has breached the faith of all government employees in the political executive of Delhi. “The employees of Delhi Government and other organisations will observe a five minute silence outside their respective offices to express their anguish over the breach of faith by the political executive,” IAS Association said in a statement.

Congress not to declare CM face in Rajasthan, blow to Gehlot New Delhi, Feb 22 (IANS): The Congress will contest the 2018 Rajasthan Assembly polls under the stewardship of party President Rahul Gandhi and without declaring a chief ministerial candidate, a party leader said on Thursday. The decision is perceived as a blow to Rajasthan’s senior party leader and former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, who held the post from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2008 to 2013. The issue was discussed at a meeting here of state Congress leaders with Rahul Gandhi, attended by Gehlot, state Congress chief Sachin Pilot, Rajasthan Congress Legislature Party leader Rameshwar Lal Dudi and former Union Minister Bhanwar Jitendra Singh. The woman, a local resident, promptly threw herself at Banerjee’s feet much to the latter’s surprise, before immediately being dragged away by the security personnel present on the stage. Clearly incensed by the security breach, Banerjee flayed the officials and security personnel, and instructed them to check what is the matter with the woman. “Do you guys see the lacuna (in security)? Let her sit on the stage. We

must check what is the matter with her. “No work can be done in this manner. How can someone run onto the stage like that? This is not the right way. One can write me a letter about the problems, if needed. That would be enough,” she said. The woman later said she wanted to talk to Banerjee at the Hemtabad event to ask her to ensure action against her father’s murderer. “We earlier tried to meet the Chief Minister during her tour to Malda district but that did not happen. We even went to Nabanna (state secretariat) in Kolkata, but were not allowed to meet her. We just want our father’s murderer punished,” she said.

Soldier injured in J&K gunfight

SRINAGAR, FEB 22 (IANS): A soldier was injured on Thursday in an ongoing gunfight between militants and the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district, police said. “The injured soldier has been hospitalised. The gunfight is going on in Paribal village,” the police added. As soon as the security forces cordoned off the village in Hajin area following information about the presence of the militants, they were fired at, triggering the fighting. According to reports, the village youth have resorted to stone-pelting.

exclusive standby line, to ensure 24x7 high quality power to the islanders with sufficient excess capacity to take care of future requirements for more than 30 years, he explained. An unseasonal ‘Diwali’ has suddenly been ushered on the island, which used to be plunged into darkness after dusk in the absence of electricity at the three villages -- Raj Bander, Mora Bander and Shet Bander -- housing around 1,200 people, mostly engaged in fishing, farming, boat-repairs and tourismrelated activities. Since the past few years however, the villagers managed with just three hours electricity courtesy power generators provided by the state government, but these were expensive and unreliable. The previous Congress-Nationalist Congress Party regime had initiated the proposal, but it fell

through as the tender attracted a single bid, and later the Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena government revived the proposal almost two years ago. The 22-KV cable has been connected directly with the MSEDCL’s Olwa sub-station, Panvel Division in Raigad on the mainland, Karape said. The official is hopeful that now, the islanders can get better educational institutions, boost tourism -- probably with overnight stay, subject to other governmental clearances -- install a lighthouse on the isle’s hilltop, and even power the Elephanta Caves if the Archaelogical Survey of India permits. Since a small dam exists on this 16-sq km island, a water filtration plant can be set up to provide safe and clean drinking water to the locals and tourists, who now rely on bottled mineral water.

Avinash Pandey fairs Avinash Pande said the state leaders assured Gandhi of keeping aside their differences and unitedly fighting the coming elections. “Elections will be fought under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi. No CM candidate will be declared. After the elections, the MLAs will elect the Chief Minister and the high command will take a decision,” Pandey told IANS. He said all senior state leaders, including Gehlot, have assured Gandhi of jointly campaigning in the state and making it a

success. The meeting was convened by the Congress chief to sort out differences among senior party leaders like Gehlot, Pilot, Singh and former Union Minister C.P. Joshi. Rajasthan Congress President Sachin Pilot told IANS that the meeting was held to discuss the roadmap ahead of the Assembly elections and chart out a campaign strategy. According to Congress sources, the party has finalised slogans like “Hamara agenda, Congress ka jhanda”. The party has also finalised a flagship organisational programme “Mera booth, mera gaurav” and pledged to make it successful and discussed how to make it a success. In Gujarat, the Congress contested the Assembly polls without declaring its chief ministerial candidate. Instead, Rahul Gandhi was at the forefront of the party’s campaign in the western state.

Florida shooting: Trump suggests arming teachers

President Donald Trump hosts a listening session with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students and others to discuss school safety at the White House in Washington, Feb. 21, 2018.

WASHINGTON, FEB 22 (IANS): US President Donald Trump met survivors and families of the victims that were killed in the Florida school shooting and suggested that teachers and staff members should be provided with arms to avert such massacres, the media reported. Tr ump’s comment came during a White House “listening session” on Wednesday which was attended by families and students including six survivors from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where a 19-year-old man Nikolas Cruz armed with an assault rifle killed 17 people on February 14, reports CNN. The event brought Trump face-to-face with

students and parents who have demanded action on gun violence. “If you had a teacher who was adept with the firearm, they could end the attack very quickly,” he said, stating that schools could arm up to 20 per ent of their teachers to stop “maniacs” who may try and attack them. “This would be obviously only for people who were very adept at handling a gun, and it would be, it’s called concealed carry, where a teacher would have a concealed gun on them. They’d go for special training and they would be there and you would no longer have a gun-free zone,” Trump said. “Gunfree zone to a maniac -- because they’re all cowards -- a gun-free zone is ‘let’s go

in and let’s attack because bullets aren’t coming back at us’.” Acknowledging that the idea was controversial, Trump said that his administration would give it serious study. The President also called for more mental institutions and hospitals in addition to the idea of arming teachers. Trump’s idea of arming teachers and school staff was met with support from many of the attendees, CNN reported. Fred Abt, father of Parkland shooting survivor Carson Abt, said he had discussed with Education Secretary Betsy DeVos that rather than waiting for first responders to arrive, it would be more efficient to have firearms locked on school campuses.

“One possible solution, which may not be very popular, would be to have people in the school, teachers, administrators who have volunteered to have a firearm safely locked in the classroom who are given training throughout the year,” he said. “There are plenty of teachers who are already licensed to carry firearms, have them raise their hands to volunteer for the training, and when something like this starts, the first responders are already on campus. Andrew Pollack, a father of one of the 17 victims who died in the Florida shooting, said he was speaking because his daughter couldn’t. “We as a countr y failed our children... This shouldn’t happen.” The President, flanked by the students, went around the room and shook hands before commencing the session. Tr u m p a l s o l a t e r tweeted he would “always remember” the event, adding “we must keep our children safe”. “I will always remember the time I spent today with courageous students, teachers and families,” he tweeted, along with a link to the full event. “So much love in the midst of so much pain. We must not let them down. We must keep our children safe!!”

China no threat to Australia, says Turnbull CANBERRA, FEB 22 (IANS): China is not a threat to Australia because it lacks “any hostile intent”, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said here on Thursday as he embarked on his US visit. Turnbull while speaking to the media, sought to play down a more hostile approach to China by the US, rejecting the “out-ofdate cold-war prism” of seeing the two super-powers as in competition, reports the Guardian. Asked if the US viewed China as a “strategic threat”, unlike Australia, Turnbull replied that “a threat is a combination of capability and intent”. “China has enormous capability, and of course it’s growing [as it becomes] more prosperous … but we do not see any hostile intent from China. “We do not describe China as a threat,” the Prime Minister said. According to the Prime Minister, Australia and US President Donald Trump, did not view the Asia-Pacific region “through an outof-date cold-war prism”, citing Trump’s business experience to demonstrate he “understands the economic significance of China’s rise and its opportunity”. “Of course there are issues between Washington and Beijing, and there always will be. But the two leaders and I’ve had privilege of being with both of them, see those issues and address them in a very cleareyed and candid way.”

China probes report of possible N Korea sanctions breach at sea

BEIJING, FEB 22 (AGENCIES): China said on Thursday it is investigating a Japanese report that a Chinese ship may have carried out a ship-toship transfer with a North

Korean vessel in breach of U.N. sanctions, reports Reuters. Japan said late on Tuesday that its military had spotted a North Korean-flagged tanker lying

alongside a small vessel of unknown origin with Chinese characters on it in the East China Sea, indicating it was possibly an oil tanker from the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian. Japan suspects they were conducting ship-toship transfers banned by the U.N. Security Council and has informed the Security Council and shared the information with other countries, Japan’s Foreign Ministry said. North Korea last year conducted dozens of missile launches and its sixth and largest nuclear test in defiance of U.N. resolutions as it pursues its goal of developing a nuclear-armed missile capable of reaching the United States. Angela Merkel urges solidarity from all EU members on taking migrants

Angela Merkel

BERLIN, FEB 22 (AGENCIES): German Chancellor Angela Merkel pressed European member states Thursday to do their share in helping to deal with the large influx of migrants, work together to strengthen external borders and fight the problems causing people to flee their homelands, reports AP. Speaking to Parliament before a meeting with other EU leaders Friday in Brussels, Merkel stressed that countries need to remember that “solidarity is not a one-

way street” — a statement that seemed to take aim at eastern European members who have benefited from EU funding, but have been resisting taking in refugees. “It is up to all member states never to lose sight of their responsibility for the whole,” she said, without naming any individual nations. “And that, of course, includes safeguarding our common European values on which the European Union was established.” Germany took in by far the largest number of

migrants since 2015. Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic are being sued by the European Commission for refusing to accept their share. Merkel says EU leaders need to agree upon a fair quota system for taking in asylum-seekers, saying that the goal is to have “significant steps” concluded by June. She said she would approach the negotiations with “tenacity and patience.” She said Germany also plans to become more engaged in European matters overall, noting that her conservative bloc’s coalition agreement with the Social Democrats — who still need to approve it before a new government is formed — stresses the importance of Europe. “Germany can only do well in the long term when Europe does also,” she said. Among other issues she said Germany would push for the Brussels summit was how to make the EU more competitive in China, resolving conflicts in places like Syria, Libya and Ukraine, and how to move ahead after Britain leaves the trade bloc.

Shuang said China was paying great attention to Japanese report. “We are investigating,” he told a daily news briefing. China fully and strictly enforces U.N. resolutions and shoulders its international responsibilities, Geng added. China had explicitly banned shipto-ship transfers that run counter to U.N. resolutions, he said. China has repeatedly said it is fully enforcing all resolutions against North Korea, despite suspicion in Washington, Seoul and Tokyo that loopholes still exist. A confidential report by independent U.N. monitors to a U.N. Security Council sanctions committee, seen by Reuters earlier this month, said

New York dirtiest city in America NEW YORK, FEB 22 (IANS): New York is the dirtiest city, with more pests and litter than any place else in the US, according to a review of government data by the cleaning-services company Busy Bee. The newly released report ranked 40 urban areas across the US based on pest and litter data from the American Housing Survey, air pollution data from the Environmental Protection Agency and population estimates from the US Census Bureau, Xinhua reported. The Big Apple took the top spot in three of those categories with a score of 427.9 on Busy Bee’s “dirtiness index.” Los Angeles ranked second with a score of 317.8. Some 904,000 homes in New York have litter on nearby streets or properties, and nearly 2.3 million homes have seen signs of mice, rats or cockroaches in the past year, according to the report. New York also ranks first for population density, with 28,000 people per square mile.

they had investigated cases of ship-to-ship transfers of petroleum products in violation of sanctions and that the network behind the vessels was primarily based in Taiwan. The monitors said one country, which they did not name, told them North Korea had carried out such transfers off its ports of Wonsan and Nampo and in international waters between the Yellow Sea and East China Sea between October and January. Nor th Korea will send another high-level delegation to South Korea for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics closing ceremony, officials said on Thursday, including the man blamed for the 2010 sinking of a South Korean navy ship that killed 46 sailors.

Chaos deepens in Syria enclave, global outcry grows

In this photo released on Wednesday Feb. 21, 2018, Syrians search for victims under the rubble of a destroyed building in Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus, Syria.

DOUMA (SYRIA), FEB 22 (AGENCIES): The Syrian regime rained rockets and bombs on Eastern Ghouta Thursday, killing another 19 civilians as international pressure mounted to stop the carnage in the rebel-held enclave, reports AFP. Calls for a humanitarian truce in one of the bloodiest episodes of Syria’s seven-year-old conflict went unheeded as the death toll for Damascus’s five-day blitz rose to 368. The United Nations chief said the bloodshed wreaked by the aerial campaign had turned Eastern Ghouta into “hell on earth”, while German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for an end to the “massacre”. Residents huddled in basements as government forces pounded the besieged enclave with rockets and bombs, turning towns into fields of ruins and even hitting hospitals.

Taliban attack local police; eight killed KABUL, FEB 22 (AP): An Afghan official says Taliban fighters have attacked a police security post in central Ghazni province, killing eight local police. Arif Noori, spokesman for the provincial governor, said today the attack happened the previous night. He said the insurgents attacked from four sides using heavy weapons, including artillery, killing eight police and wounding another in a two-hour attack. Government reinforcement reached the area too late to stop the attack, Noori said. Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement, and said nine local police were killed and one other captured in the attack.

According to Doctors Without Borders, 13 of the facilities it supports in Eastern Ghouta were damaged or destroyed in three days, leaving remaining staff with very little to save the hundreds of wounded brought to them every day. In the hospital mortuary in Douma, the main town in the enclave just east of Damascus, bodies wrapped in white shrouds were already lining up on the floor, two of them children. Little pools of blood dotted the way to the hospital, where most of the victims of the sustained rocket fire unleashed by government troops on Thursday were taken. “The rocket fire hasn’t stopped this morning. Around 200 groundto-ground rockets struck Douma alone,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Morning rain appeared to initially keep warplanes away but the sky cleared by midday and jets, some of them Russian according to the Observatory, soon returned. Russia has so far denied direct involvement in the assault on Ghouta but the pro-government Syrian newspaper Al-Watan reported on Thursday that Russian warplanes and advisers had joined the battle. Regime and allied forces have been massing around the enclave, in which an estimated 400,000 people live, ahead of a likely ground offensive to flush out holdout Islamist and jihadist groups. The brief respite provided by the rain on Thursday encouraged some residents to venture out of their basements and shelters, to buy food, check on their property or enquire about their relatives and neighbours.

Explosion at US embassy in Montenegro’s capital city

PODGORICA (MONTENEGRO), FEB 22 (IANS): An unidentified attacker threw an explosive device at the US embassy in Montenegro’s capital city Podgorica, before blowing himself up with another bomb, police said on Thursday. The attack took place around midnight on Wednesday, reports Xinhua news agency. “Immediately before the suicide, the person threw an explosive device into the compound of the embassy from an intersection near the sports centre in Podgorica,” the police said. It added that the explosive device was most likely a hand grenade. Identification of the assailant was underway. The US

State Department said that the embassy has been conducting an internal review to confirm the safety of all staff, according to spokesperson Heather Nauert. The e m ba ssy ha s warned American citizens of “an active security situation at the embassy” and to avoid the embassy “until further notice”. Located in southeastern Europe, Montenegro has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the southwest and borders Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Albania. The Balkan country declared independence in June 2006, after it separated itself from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, a federation it established with Serbia in 1992.

Ahmadinejad calls for immediate free elections T E H R A N, F E B 2 2 ( AG E N C I E S ) : I r a n’s hardline former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for the immediate holding of free presidential and parliamentary elections in a letter to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei published on Thursday, re por ts AFP. The call from a man, whose name is synonymous with the bloody repression of mass protests against his controversial re-election in 2009, marked a new act of defiance against a political establishment that has long since turned against him. Ahmadinejad made no specific reference in his letter to a wave of unrest that swept Iran over the new year but it comes as the country’s divided political factions argue over how to respond. “The immediate holding of free presidential and parliamentary elections -- of course without their being engineered by the Guardian Council and without interference by military or security bodies so that people have

a free choice -- is an urgent necessity,” he wrote. The Guardian Council is a powerful vetting b o dy w h i c h ove r s e e s all elections in Iran and which barred Ahmadinejad among others from running for president last May. The former president referred directly to a speech Khamenei delivered on Sunday in which he said that progress was needed in “the field of justice”, acknowledging widespread criticism of the system. “These clear comments from the leader can of course be understood” as an appeal for “urgent and concrete reforms that meet the demands of the people,” he said. Ahmadinejad called for the dismissal of judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani, a rival hardliner, on the grounds that the “injustices” of the judiciary were “one of the main causes of public discontent.” He also called for the release of all people arrested for criticising the regime and the halting of any proceedings under

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

way.

Ahmadinejad remains popular, particularly among poorer segments of society who recall the large-scale welfare schemes he implemented during his 2005-2013 presidency. But he has fallen out with the establishment, especially since he ran for president last year against Khamenei’s advice. A nu m b e r o f h i s senior aides have been ar rested on financial and corruption charges, and his protege Hamid Baghaie was sentenced to 15 years in December.

The demonstrations over the new year, during which at least 25 people died, initially focused on economic problems but swiftly escalated into protests against corruption and the regime itself. During the 2009 protests against Ahmadinejad’s re-election, dozens of people were killed as the regime deployed militia to back up police. Thousands of people were detained and his two reformist challengers -- Mehdi Karoubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi -- remain under house arrest.

Details on Graham’s death, funeral service released ASHEVILLE (North Carolina), FEB 22 (agencies): The Rev. Billy Graham passed away in his sleep Wednesday morning, and though no family members were present, a spokesman said his passing was peaceful. “It was described by nurse and doctor as a very peaceful passing,” said Mark DeMoss, a spokesman for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. “He was not in any pain, and he wouldn’t have suffered any.” The association held a press conference Wednesday night at the Billy Graham headquarters in Charlotte to announce details of funeral plans and to talk about Graham’s final moments. At age 99, Graham suffered from several maladies, including vision and hearing loss, as well as Parkinson’s-like symptoms diagnosed nearly 20 years ago. DeMoss said Graham’s personal physician, Lucian Rice of Asheville, described Graham’s passing this way: “He just wore out.” Graham died at 7:33 a.m. ET Wednesday, and was found by his longtime assistant, David Bruce, who then called Graham’s son, Franklin Graham, who was in Dallas. “I think we can say he passed in his sleep,” DeMoss said. “Nobody would have been with him other than an attendant nurse.” Graham’s funeral service will take place at noon on March 2 at the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte. His body was taken to Morris Funeral Home in Asheville on Wednesday and will be moved to Charlotte via motorcade on

Saturday. The funeral will be private and by invitation only, with some 2,300 invitations going out, including to President Trump, Vice President Mike Pence and the living former U.S. presidents, George H.W. Bush and his son, George W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, DeMoss said. He did not have information on any acceptances Wednesday night. Franklin Graham will speak at the funeral service, as well as Graham’s four other children. Graham will lie in repose Monday and Tuesday at the Graham Family Homeplace at the Billy Graham Library. The public can pay its respects both days, from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Graham’s body will be moved from Morris Funeral Home in Asheville to the Billy Graham Training Center in Swannanoa at 3 p.m. Thursday, but this is a private movement. Graham’s body will leave the Cove at 11:25 a.m. Saturday for Charlotte, arriving at the Billy Graham Library around 3 p.m. Details on the motorcade will be released Thursday. The Graham

MANILA, FEB 22 (IANS): President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday accused the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of funding a local news website critical of the Philippines government, after the US intelligence agency said he posed a threat to democracy in Asia. In a televised press conference from Iloilo -- a city located 460 km south of Manila -- Duterte said Philippines-based Rappler was “sponsored” by the CIA as “it takes every chance to undermine” his administration in order to destabilize it. “That is the history of America’s CIA. They take care of the political dissenters because eventually they will choose a candidate that they can manipulate like this,” the leader said. Duterte’s remarks came days after an intelligence report by the US suggested

Duterte was a “threat to democracy” in Asia and compared him to autocratic heads of state in the region, including Cambodia’s Hun Sen. The document referred mainly to Duterte’s “war on drugs”, which has led to over 7,000 deaths in the Philippines, according to estimates, as well as other controversial proposals of the President, Efe news reported. According to the report, “Duterte has suggested that he could suspend the Constitution, declare a “revolutionary government”, and impose nationwide martial law”. Duterte did not offer further details or proof to back his accusations against the site. In mid-January, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) revoked Rappler’s license to operate.

Tomb Raider Escape, the world’s first escape room using actual film sets, and is set to open for a limited time in east London on Friday, March 9. Participants will be required to uncover the mysterious Tomb of the Mother of Death. Lasting 30 minutes, the multi-room experience is inspired by the film, using its props to create an immersive experience based on consultation with production designer Gary

Contestants in the escape room will be able to explore sets from the film and “take on physical and mental challenges that Lara faces.” Tickets can only be won by answering a competition question at this web address. In January a new trailer for the new Tomb Raider film arrived. Murs has since hit back at Radio X, calling it a “slow news day” and saying: “Oh piss off know every word you melts”. Gallagher was quickly snapped up as the replacement and Grande has since appeared to voice her approval of Liam’s performance. Real Madrid move to third in La Liga

Real Madrid's Casemiro, centre, celebrates with teammates after scoring his side's second goal against Leganes during a Spanish La Liga soccer match.

M A D R I D, F e b 2 2 (Agencies): Cristiano Ronaldo was rested as Real Madrid came from behind to win 3-1 at Leganes on Wednesday and move back up to third place in La Liga. Unai Bustinza had put Leganes in front at Butarque, raising hopes that the home side could record another famous victory just weeks after they ousted Real from the Copa del Rey. However, the reign-

ing European champions turned this Madrid derby around before half-time with Lucas Vazquez and Casemiro both on target. Sergio Ramos sealed the win with a late penalty, and Real have now taken 16 points from the last 18 available in La Liga. They are still a massive 14 points adrift of unbeaten league leaders Barcelona, but they are up to third above Valencia and within seven points of city rivals Atletico, who are

second. With the games piling up for his team, coach Zinedine Zidane rested Ronaldo for this rescheduled fixture, initially postponed in December due to Real’s involvement in the Club World Cup. Midfielder Arthur close to Barca move Rio de Janeiro, Feb 22 (IANS): A deal that would see highly rated Gremio midfielder Arthur move to Barcelona next January is “90 per cent complete”, according to reports in the Brazilian media. Officials from both clubs have been in talks since December over the 21-year-old, who has been likened to Barcelona great Xavi Hernandez, reports Xinhua. “You could say that it’s 90 per cent complete. There are just some little details remaining,” Globoesporte quoted a Barcelona official as saying. It added that all parties had agreed in principal to a five-year contract, meaning Arthur would be tied to the Catalan club until early 2024. Earlier, Gremio president Romildo Bolzan denied that a deal had already been struck. “There have been plenty of discussions, but at this stage the transfer cannot be considered a foregone conclusion,” he told Radio Bandeirantes. Arthur has also been linked to Real Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea and Monaco after a superb 2017 season in which he helped Gremio win the Copa Libertadores, South America’s top club competition. In October, the Brazilian club extended his contract until 2021 and added a 50 million-euro buyout clause. K Y M C

Reports said if Lynn,

who has a history of shoulder trouble, lands in Kolkata but does not play a match he would receive half his fee. But if he is ruled out before the tournament he will not be paid anything. “Chris dislocated his right shoulder after landing awkwardly on it when fielding the ball,” Australia team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said in a statement. “His shoulder was able to be put back into place at the ground and he was consequently sent for X-rays which revealed no major bone injury. At this stage Chris will not travel to the Pakistan Super League in Dubai.” Lynn will undergo further scans in Brisbane, which will determine his immediate playing future.

chance for some of Real’s fringe players to shine. Theo Hernandez and Isco were among the starters, but Gareth Bale was back on the bench as he struggles to rediscover his best form. K i k o C a s i l l a wa s handed a start in goal in place of regular number one Keylor Navas, and Casilla was picking the ball out of his net inside six minutes, with Bustinza bravely stooping to score from almost on the line after his initial effort had been blocked. However, it took Real just five minutes to draw level, Casemiro helping the ball into the path of Vazquez, who slotted home low. Casemiro is a defensive midfielder by trade but he put Madrid in front just before the halfhour mark, scoring at the end of a lovely one-touch move also involving Karim Benzema and Vazquez. It took Real until the 90th minute to make sure of the victory, though, with Ramos scoring from the penalty spot after Mateo Kovacic had been fouled. Zidane’s side will bid to continue their improved form when they host Alaves at the weekend.

cannot forget that this is not a senior team and we want to learn and progress in football. After 16 games the expectation was less than what we achieved and 15 points are good. Every team in the league depends a lot on foreigners and we have no foreigners,” Matos said. “Our main aim is not the points but the development of the boys. We have to think the development of all the boys. After two to three years, these boys will develop to another level,” he added. Edmund Lalrindika, who scored his first goal of the season against Aizawl in their last match said: “I’m excited to be playing in Aizawl. In our last three games, we won one and drew two. Dubai, Feb 22 (Agencies): British No 1 Johanna Konta is remaining upbeat despite squandering two match points during her loss to Daria Kasatkina in Dubai. She suffered a setback on Wednesday when Kasatkina eventually won a marathon three-hour tussle 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-2. Konta said, “It would have been nice to have taken one of the match points - however, that’s part of the game. I can really look back at this match and take the good things, because I did do a lot of good things, and learn from the things I can try to do better.” The World No 12 agreed that Kasatkina had been the stronger player in the final set, adding: “I fought the best that I could in that third set. Not to lie, I don’t feel amazing. At one point I was laughing, I did think we were playing two separate matches because she looked fresh as a daisy.” “So that was not a great feeling, but I did the best that I could today.” And Konta later tweeted, “Thank you to all the people out there who continue to support me, understand what process and growth is, and how it looks in reality. #keepworking”

Russian curler stripped of Olympic medal for doping

Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky was stripped of his Pyeongchang Winter Olympics bronze medal on Thursday.

PYEONGCHANG, Feb 22 (Agencies): Russian curler Alexander Krushelnitsky was stripped of his Pyeongchang Winter Olympics bronze medal Thursday after admitting doping, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said. The 25-year-old was one of 168 Russian athletes who passed rigorous testing to compete as neutrals in Pyeongchang after Russia were banned over a major doping scandal. “The athlete has admitted the anti-doping rule violation; he is disqualified from the mixed doubles curling event,” the court said in a statement.

Krushelnitsky, who won mixed doubles bronze along with his wife, Anastasia Bryzgalova, has protested his innocence and officials have hinted at foul play. But Kr ushelnitsky decided not to contest Thursday’s CAS hearing, saying it was “stupid to deny” testing positive for meldonium, an endurance booster. However, CAS said Kr ushelnitsky, who is provisionally suspended, “reserved his rights to seek the elimination or reduction of any period of ineligibility based on ‘no fault or negligence’

following the conclusion of the Games”. The Inter national Olympic Committee will this week decide whether to lift Russia’s suspension in time for Russian athletes to carry the national flag at Sunday’s closing ceremony, taking into account the conduct of their athletes in Pyeongchang. N o r way ’s K r i s t i n Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten lost out to Krushelnitsky and Bryzgalova in the bronze medal play-off. Reallocating the medal is down to the World Curling Federation and the International Olympic Committee, CAS said.

Aizawl host Arrows in I-League tie

Aizawl, Feb 22 (IANS): With all hopes of retaining the title gone, defending champions Aizawl FC will play for pride when they host Indian Arrows in an I-League game here on Friday. Arrows, who are lying at the bottom of the 10team table with 15 points after 16 games, will need nothing but the full three points in order to climb up the ladder. Aizawl have been winless in the last eight games and could only garner five points from those outings. Luis Norton de Matos-coached Arrows are a bit ahead in terms of recent form as they have amassed five points from their last four outings. “I’m really glad to be here in Aizawl and I am very proud of the boys. We

row.” The for mer India U-19 skipper also pointed out that the crowd support behind Aizawl FC might give the hosts an edge over them. “If we can play our game, I know we can win but it won’t be an easy game as Aizawl FC always have a huge crowd,” Lalrindika said. A i z aw l w i l l n e e d more than a miracle to retain their title and head coach Santosh Kashyap spoke cautiously before the match. “We need to think one game at a time. We are in the relegation battle but we will play for three points tomorrow. All the players are good enough to be good in the squad but we lost a few players due to injury and sickness,” he said.

No FA action against Firmino over Holgate spat LO N D O N, F e b 2 2 (Agencies): Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino will face no disciplinary action following his clash with Everton’s Mason Holgate in the FA Cup third-round tie at Anfield last month. Officials announced on Wednesday there was insufficient evidence to uphold an allegation of “discriminatory conduct” during the Merseyside derby clash. Firmino and Holgate were involved in an angry exchange after the Everton defender pushed the Brazilian into the front row of the stand shortly before half-time of Liverpool’s 2-1 win. Words were exchanged which left the 21-year-old Holgate incensed. Referee Bobby Madley made reference to an allegedly racist remark that had been reported to him, understood to be by the Everton defender on the pitch and Everton officials after the match. That prompted the FA, English football’s governing body, to look into the incident. However, a FA statement issued Wednesday said: “Following a detailed investigation into an allegation of discriminatory conduct against Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino by Everton’s Mason Holgate, the FA can confirm that it will not be taking any disciplinary action against Firmino.”

India can succeed at CWG, World Cup: Manpreet Singh NEW DELHI, Feb 22 (Agencies): Indian men’s hockey captain Manpreet Singh, who led the side to the Asia Cup title last year, believes that the challenges of a very critical 2018 can be met with successful results, given the promise he has seen at close range over the past few years. This year, leading upto the FIH World Cup in Bhubaneshwar in NovemberDecember, the Indian team will compete at the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Writing in his column for TOI, Manpreet felt that his team could win laurels in 2018 given the good mix of experience and youth under the guidance of coach Sjoerd Marijne. “The importance 2018 cannot be over-emphasised. It’s not only important but critical too, looking ahead to the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Most fans would know that we are steadily climbing in terms of performance, displaying better skills and that would reflect in our rankings which at the moment put us at No 6 on the FIH listings,” wrote the 25-year-old. “I am confident that a year in which we play the Commonwealth Games (April), Asian Games (August) and the World Cup (November) will see a spike in our performance resulting in massive doses of confidence that should see us more often on the vic-

tory podium with the national team winning more and more medals. Younger players get more chances as the team is rotated for tournaments; importantly they also get to play with the seniors and the mentorship helps them gain confidence against bigger teams.” Under the captaincy of Manpreet in 2017, the men’s hockey team beat Malaysia 2-1 to secure the Asia Cup title after ten years. In additional, it took home bronze medals at the Hockey World League Final in Bhubaneshwar and the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup and finished second in Pool B at the WHL semi-finals in London, highlights being wins over Pakistan by 7-1 and 6-1 to reach the quarter-finals. The 2018 Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast

City, in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland from April 4-15, will see the hockey team start off in the qualification round. Manpreet felt India had caught up with Australia, one of the dominant teams in international hockey. “The Commonwealth Games is very important and we have closed the gap on the Australians. Even though it’s a challenge meeting them in Australia, we will go all out to beat them; hopefully what should be the final. But it doesn’t mean we are taking the others lightly,” he wrote. “As captain of the team, we are working on creating more penalty corners and converting them into goals. We realised to win consistently; we have to score from every opportunity we get.” K Y M C

Man Utd held goalless by Sevilla in CL SA beat India to keep series alive The Manchester United fans thought they had snatched a winner seven minutes from time, but Lukaku was adjudged to have handled as he found the net inside the box. A win would have been unfair on the home side, who, but for De Gea, would have taken a healthy lead to Manchester for the second leg. Manchester United now host Chelsea on Super Sunday while Sevilla host Atletico Madrid.

Seville, Feb 22 (Agencies): David de Gea produced a string of fine saves to help a lacklustre Manchester United hold Sevilla to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Seville. The early introduction of Paul Pogba, who replaced the injured Ander Herrera, had little influence as Sevilla dominated for large swathes of the opening period, but the hosts were denied time and again by the brilliance of De Gea. There was more of the same after the break, but this time it was

wayward finishing that denied the La Liga side, with Pablo Sarabia missing the most gilt-edged opportunity from close range. Romelu Lukaku did have the ball in the back of the net in the second half, but it was ruled out for handball as United continued their wretched record against Spanish sides, having scored just seven goals in their last 15 Champions League encounters against Spanish opposition. Buoyed by a boisterous home crowd, Sevilla started on the front foot, with Luis Muriel forcing De Gea into a smart stop

from a low, fizzing effort from 25 yards. Then, after being left on the bench once again by Jose Mourinho, Pogba made an appearance 18 minutes in as Herrera had to be withdrawn with an injury, with the France international deployed in his favoured role on the left of a midfield three. United’s best chance of the first half came in the 24th minute, as Alexis Sanchez picked out Lukaku, but the Belgian fired over from a good position. Joaquin Correa then tested De Gea down to his left, before the Spain

international produced his best stops of the match right at the end of the half to first deny Steven N’Zonzi, before he then brilliantly tipped Muriel’s goal-bounder header over the top to stun the masses in the Ramon SanchezPizjuan. The second half was more scrappy as Sevilla elected to shoot from distance all too often, without really troubling De Gea enough. Muriel clipped a cross onto the head of Sarabia in the 73rd minute, but the Sevilla forward could not find the target from a few yards out.

Shakhtar Donetsk recovered from a deficit to defeat AS Roma 2-1 in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League knockout stage tie. Towards the end of an action-packed first half here on Wednesday, Roma put on the pressure and it paid off with a goal in the 41st minute by Cengiz Ünder, with a key assist from Edin Dzeko. The Shakhtar comeback began eight minutes into the second half, when Facundo Ferreyra equalised from close range. Ro m a g o a l k e e p e r Alisson went on to make several great stops before finally conceding to Fred, who scored on a magnificent direct free kick in the 71st minute to put the Ukrainian side up 2-1. Shakhtar nearly boosted the margin to 3-1 in the final play of the match, but Roma defender Bruno Peres was on the goal line to sweep the ball away.

Centurion, Feb 22 (Agencies): Heinrich Klaasen blasted 69 from 30 balls in his second T20 international as South Africa beat India in Centurion to take the three-match series to a decider. Klaasen, playing for the Proteas with regular wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock nursing a wrist injury, struck seven sixes as South Africa chased down the tourists’ 188-4 in 18.4 overs to triumph by six wickets. JP Duminy’s men lost the series opener at Wanderers on Sunday and were set a stiff target at SuperSport Park as Manish Pandey (79no off 48) and MS Dhoni (52no off 28) blazed an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 98 from 56 balls. However, Klaasen’s fireworks and Duminy’s unbeaten 64 from 40 deliveries mean the sides are level at 1-1 heading into Saturday’s final match in Cape Town - India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (0-64 from four overs) receiving particular

punishment on a drizzly day in the Highveld. Pandey and Dhoni joined forces at 90-4 in the 11th over - Virat Kohli (1) one of the four to fall after snicking Zambia-born seamer Junior Dala (2-28) behind for a rare low score. Pandey sealed his second T20I fifty from 33 balls, before Dhoni registered his from just 27 in the final over as the pair ensured South Africa’s attack was bludgeoned for 103 runs from the final 10. Klaasen then demonstrated his force and finesse at No 4 for the Proteas, with powerful pulls, booming drives and even a switchhit over the ropes off the unfortunate Chahal. The 26-year-old - who reached fifty from 22 balls - feathered Jaydev Unadkat behind to MS Dhoni at the start of the 14th over with 58 runs still required but Duminy’s captain’s knock saw the hosts home, the skipper sealing a crucial victory with back-toback sixes off Unadkat.

SA took calculated risks, says Kohli

After a six wicket loss to South Africa in the second Twenty20 International match, India skipper Virat Kohli praised the hosts, saying they took calculated risks which helped them. “South Africa took calculated risks, credit to them. We didn’t really have problems with the conditions, it was a constant drizzle, was fine to play. We expect them to show a fight and show some heart and they deserved to win tonight,” Kohli was quoted as saying. Kohli also said the game was a difficult one for his bowlers. “It was a tough one for the bowlers. We were looking at 175 with the loss of early wickets. Manish (Pandey) and (Suresh) Raina batted well and then Manish and MS (Dhoni) got us to 190 (188/4). I thought it was a winning total,” he said.

GANGNEUNG, Feb 22 (Agencies): The United States won Olympic women’s ice hockey gold for the first time in 20 years on Thursday, edging four-time defending champion Canada 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout in the Pyeongchang Winter

Seoul, Feb 22 (IANS): North Korea on Thursday said it would send a high-level delegation to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics’ closing ceremony, the Unification Ministry confirmed here. Kim Yong-chol, head of the ruling party’s United Front Department, will lead the eight-member delegation for a three-day trip that will start on Sunday, reports Yonhap News Agency. The delegation also includes Ri Son-gwon, the head of the North’s agency in charge of inter-Korean affairs. “ T h e g ove r n m e n t thinks the delegation’s dispatch will help improve inter-Korean relations and bring peace to the Korean Peninsula, including the North’s denuclearisation,” the ministry said. “In that sense, Seoul will accept their visit.” North Korea sent a high-level delegation that includes its ceremonial head of state Kim Yongnam and Kim Yo-jong,

the younger sister of the North’s leader Kim Jongun, from February 9 to 11 to attend the Olympics’ opening ceremony. Kim Yo-jong delivered her brother’s letter to President Moon Jae-in, which includes an invitation of the South’s leader to Pyongyang at an early date.

onto the ice in joyful celebration, complete with hugs and flag waving. US women have struggled to seize gold on the game’s biggest stage despite winning seven of the past world championship finals over Canada. American Hilary Knight opened the scoring but Haley Irwin and MariePhilip Poulin answered for Canada only for Monique Lamoureux-Morando’s third-period equaliser to set the stage for over-time. Megan Keller was whistled for an illegal hit on Canada’s Poulin with 95 seconds to play in the extra 20-minute period, but Canada couldn’t net a winner on the power play as the game went to a shootout. The tension mounted as Gigi Marvin scored for the Americans only to have Canada’s Agosta answer on the next shot. Melodie Daoust put Canada ahead on the fourth round of shots but Amanda Kessel pulled the US level, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
