Jorge Costa began with two changes to the team that was trounced by FC Goa. Bipin and Bidyananda Singh were dropped in favour of Amine Chermiti and Sourav Das respectively. The formation remained 4-2-3-1.

A terse 15 minutes signalled the opening of the game with Chennaiyin dominating possession. Lallianzuala Chhangte blazed over a shot from the left-hand side before Mumbai City cranked up the pressure.

First, Rafique's optimistic drive was deflected just wide by Jerry Lalrinzuala 20 yards from goal. Then, from almost the same spot, Diego Carlos was teed up by Mohammed Larbi three minutes later. The Brazilian ripped a low drive which was just parried back into play by Kaith. Luckily for the Chennaiyin shot-stopper, the ball fell past an onrushing Mumbai City attacker as Laldinliana Ralte cleared away.

Chennaiyin had a narrow brush at the other end as a well-drifted corner wasn't cleared at all. Kaith however, pounced to end all hope Diego Carlos had of shunting it into the back of the net.

Mumbai City seemed pumped after the half-time interval and had the first real opportunity of the half.

Diego Carlos fizzed in a free-kick, won by Moudou Sougou. However, Sougou was unable to get the deciding touch, with his header drifting out for a goal kick. The game spun around on its head in the two minutes that followed. Firstly, Amine Chermiti, sent through on goal by a brilliant ball from midfield, was

Wellington, Feb 21 (IANS): Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane held one end as India found themselves struggling on the opening day of the first Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve on Friday.

At Stumps which the umpires were forced to call early after rains washed out the entire last session, India were 122/5 with Rahane and Rishabh Pant batting on 38 and 10, respectively. Earlier, after being put into bat in rather difficult circumstances, which included overcast conditions and a fairly green track, the visitors didn’t have a great start as they lost young opener Prithvi Shaw quite early.

Shaw, who scored a couple of boundaries, was undone by a peach of a delivery by Tim Southee, who disturbed the woodwork in the fifth over and sent back the Indian opener back in the dressing room at his individual score of 16.

Cheteshwar Pujara, who is being termed as the new ‘wall’ of Indian Test team, then tried to steady the ship with other opener Mayank Agarwal. However, after playing out 42 deliveries, Pujara became the first Test scalp of debutant Kyle Jamieson.

The good length delivery bowled by the tall, right-arm pacer jagged of a length and Pujara could only manage a fine edge and was caught by keeper BJ Watling after contributing with 11.

Skipper Virat Kohli, who came in next, continued his poor run of form in the ongoing tour and was caught at first slip by Ross Taylor off the bowling of Jamieson.

Kohli scored just two runs off seven deliveries and his wicket left India reeling at 40/3.

However, Rahane then joined forces with Agarwal and made sure the visitors didn’t lose any further wicket till the end of the session. India went into Lunch at 79/3.

In the second session, Agarwal, who had weathered the first two hours with remarkable composure, couldn’t stay long and was caught at fine-leg as he top-edged a rising Trent Boult delivery off his hips after sharing a valuable 48-run partnership with Rahane.

Hanuma Vihari (7) looked shaky right from the start and became the third scalp of debutant Kyle Jamieson, who got him caught behind.

However, Pant who was drafted into the playing XI in place of Wriddhiman Saha, played with utmost composure and made sure India didn’t lose any further wickets till the end of the session.

Not a single ball could be bowled in the final session as heavy rainfall started to pour and continued for long, thus forcing the match officials to call the end of the day’s play. Europa League: Arsenal beat Olympiacos 1-0

L o n d o n , F e b 2 1 (Agencies ): Alexandre Lacazette scored a late winner to secure Arsenal a 1-0 win at Olympiacos and hand the Gunners a significant advantage in their Europa League last-32 tie.

Mikel Arteta’s men looked to be heading for an underwhelming goalless draw in Piraeus, but Lacazette struck nine minutes from time to get Arsenal a potentially vital away goal ahead of the return leg in London.

The Gunners had little difficulty taking control and should have netted early on when Lacazette was guilty of a dreadful miss, and the visitor failed to craft a better opportunity until late on.

Olympiacos generally appeared happy to hold on for a stalemate, but that approach backfired when Lacazette turned in Bukayo Saka’s pass, putting Arsenal in complete control of the tie.

After surviving an early scare when Bernd Leno denied Mathieu Valbuena, Lacazette missed a glorious chance for the Gunners, somehow shooting wide from about eight yards having been teed up by Gabriel Martinelli.

Leno had to be alert again a few moments later, making a reaction save after Giorgos Masouras’ cross was deflected goalwards by David Luiz.

A second opportunity came Lacazette’s way just before the break, but Ousseynou Ba crucially got a touch to divert his fierce volley over the crossbar.

The contest became a cagier affair after the break, with Arsenal controlling possession but doing little to hurt an Olympiacos side seemingly content to absorb pressure.

But Arsenal finally produced some spark in attack through Saka in the 81st minute, the 18-year-old talent driving at the defence and feeding Lacazette, who tapped in from close range. Sokratis Papastathopoulos almost doubled Arsenal’s advantage when his late header came back off the crossbar.

Arsenal hosts Everton in the Premier League on Sunday and Olympiacos goes to defending Greek Super League champion PAOK the same day. They resume hostilities at Emirates Stadium next Thursday. Man Utd held 1-1 by Club Brugge

Anthony Martial struck a potentially important away goal as Manchester United drew 1-1 with Club Brugge in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.

The France international cancelled out an opening goal from Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis to give Solskjaer’s side a slight advantage heading into the return game at Old Trafford. Andreas Pereira had United’s first attempt after 14 minutes, with Simon Mignolet pushing his low effort.

The Red Devils found themselves behind just a minute later. Dennis raced onto a Mignolet goal kick and, with Romero having strayed foolishly far from his line, the forward lobbed the ball over the United keeper, who could only watch it bobble into the net. United were stuck in first gear and Romero had to be well-positioned to deny Dennis a second from close range after the visitors failed to clear from the edge of the box.

Brugge’s lead looked comfortable until they handed United an equaliser. Maxim De Cuyper’s throw-in from inside the opposition half bounced away from Brandon Mechele, and Martial pounced, driving towards goal and slotting the ball past Mignolet. United finished strongly but could not carve out a chance for a winner, leaving the tie nicely poised ahead of next Thursday’s return fixture. Alexandre Lacazette celebrates with Arsenal team-mates after scoring the winning goal during their Europa League last-32 tie match against Olympiacos.
