The National Health Commission said that it received reports of 889 new confirmed cases and 118 deaths on Thursday from 31 provincial-level regions and the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, reports Xinhua news agency.
Among the deaths, 115 were in Hubei province and one each in Zhejiang, Chongqing and Yunnan.
Also on Thursday, 2,109 people were discharged after recovery, while the number of severe cases decreased by 231 to 11,633. The Commission added that 5,206 people were still suspected of being infected with the virus.
It further said that 606,037 close contacts had been traced, adding that among them, 28,804 were discharged on Thursday, with 120,302 others still unTEHRAN, FEB 21 (AGENCIES): Iranians were voting for a new parliament Friday, with turnout seen as a key measure of support for Iran’s leadership as sanctions weigh on the economy and isolate the country diplomatically. The disqualification of some 9,000 potential candidates, most of them reformists and moderates, raised the possibility of lower-than-usual turnout.
Iran’s leadership and state media urged voter participation, with some framing it as a religious duty. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei cast his ballot at a mosque near his Tehran office, shortly after polls opened and urged Iranians to the polls. “Anyone who cares about Iran’s national interests should participate in the election,“ he said. Earlier in the week, Khamenei said high voter turnout will thwart “plots and plans” by Americans and supporters of Israel against Iran.
“Enemies want to see what the results of the U.S. maximum pressure are,” he said, referring to U.S. sanctions and pressure from Washington that have strangled Iran’s ability to sell its oil abroad, forcing its economy into recession. Around 7,000 candidates are running in 208 constituencies for the 290-seat chamber.
Tensions with the United States could strengthen hard-liners by reinforcing long-held distrust of the West. The crisis with Washington spiked after a U.S. airstrike in January killed Iran’s top general, Qassem Soleimani. The strike led to a tense confrontation in which Iranian forces accidentally shot down a Ukrainian passenger plane after it took off from Tehran, killing all 176 people on board. Most of those killed were Iranian. COVID-19 toll in China increases to 2,236 der medical observation. As of Friday morning, the number of reported c ases outside China were reported in Japan (723), South Korea (156), Singapore (85), Hong Kong (69), Thailand (35), Taiwan (24), Malaysia (22), Australia (17), Germany (16), Vietnam (16), the US (15), France (12), Macau (10), the UK (nine), the UAE (nine), Canada (eight), Iran (five), India (three), the Philippines (three), Italy (three), Russia (two), Spain (two), Egypt (one), Cambodia (one), Finland (one), Nepal (one), Sri Lanka (one), Sweden (one) and Belgium (one), according to figures published by the South China Morning Post.

The novel coronavirus outbreak is under control and the general situation is improving after no new cases were registered in 14 of Chinas 34 provinces and autonomous regions, a top health official said here on Friday.
Zeng Yixin, the Deputy Director of the National Health Commission, told the media here that daily deaths were however still “at a high level” and must be taken seriously in Hubei province, where the outbreak is linked to fish markets in its capital, Wuhan, the epicentre of the epidemic, reports Efe news. “Control of the epidemic has seen significant achievements and the situation is tending to be better,” said Zeng, adding that the daily number of confirmed cases in China fell from 15,152 to less than 900 on Thursday. Peng Yinhua, a doctor from a Wuhan hospital that receives patients infected with the deadly coronavirus, has died from the virus, authorities said on Friday.
Peng, 29, a respiratory acute care medical professional, became infected while working at the First People’s Hospital of Jiangxia district of Wuhan, reports Xinhua news agency.
He was hospitalized on January 25 and transferred to the Wuhan Jinyintan Hospital for treatment five days later. He died at 9.50 p.m. on Thursday despite doctors’ all-out efforts to save his life. South Korea on Friday confirmed 100 more cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), raising the total number of infections to 204. The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said that of the total patients, 153 were residents in Daegu, about 300 km southeast of the capital Seoul, and its surrounding North Gyeongsang province, reports Xinhua news agency.
A total of 144 cases were linked to church services in Daegu. The patients attended the same services.
The number of COVID-19 infections rose sharply in just three days, after 20 new cases were reported on Wednesday and 53 more cases reported on Thursday.
Since Januray 3, the country has tested more than 16,000 people, among whom 13,016 tested negative for the COVID-19 virus and 3,180 were being checked. Seventeen patients were discharged from quarantine after making full recoveries.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT C O LO M B O, F E B 2 1 (IANS): A Sri Lankan Parliament committee on national security has proposed the immediate ban on the burqa and also suspend registration of political parties on ethnic and religious basis, the media reported.
The proposals featured in a special report presented to Parliament on Thursday to resolve 14 controversial issues following the April 2019 Easter Attack, the Daily Mirror newspaper reported.
The report was tabled by MP Malith Jayatilaka, the Chairman of the Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security.
The report states that a number of countries have already banned the burqa and suggested that the police should have the power to request anyone wearing a face covering in a public place to take it off in order to establish the person’s identity.
If such a request was not complied with, the police should have the power to arrest the individual without a warrant, the report added. It also recommended the island nation’s Election Commission to enact a legislation to suspend the registration of political parties on ethnic and religious basis. The report further said that the registration of political parties which have some racial or religious conflict or in its name should also prohibited, the Daily Mirror reported.
Such a party should be converted into a political or non-religious political party within a specified period of time, it added.
Another proposal in the report said that all students studying in madrasas should be absorbed into the normal school system under the Ministry of Education within three years. Sri Lanka parl committee proposes immediate ban on burqa KABUL/WASHINGTON, FEB 21 (AGENCIES): The US and the Taliban are set to sign a historic agreement that would pave the way to ending America’s longest war, the bitter foes announced Friday, hours after Kabul said a weeklong partial truce across Afghanistan would kick off this weekend.
If that so-called “reduction in violence” holds, it would mark a major turning point in the gruelling conflict and set the conditions for a deal that could, ultimately, pull US troops out after more than 18 years and launch Afghanistan into an uncertain future. Both US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Taliban issued statements saying they had agreed to sign the accord on February 29 in Doha, following the one-week partial truce.
“Upon a successful implementation of this understanding, signing of the US-Taliban agreement is expected to move forward,” Pompeo said, adding that negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government would “start soon thereafter”.
Afghanistan’s National Security Council spokesman Javed Faisal and Taliban sources earlier said the “reduction in violence” between US, Taliban and Afghan security forces would begin Saturday.
The United States has been in talks with the Taliban for more than a year to secure a deal in which it would pull out thousands of troops in return for Taliban security guarantees and a promise to hold peace talks with the government in Kabul. A reduction in violence would show the Taliban can control their forces and demonstrate good faith ahead of any signing, which would see the Pentagon withdraw about half of the 12,000- 13,000 troops currently in Afghanistan.
In a statement, the Taliban said warring parties would “create a suitable security situation” ahead of a deal signing.
One Taliban source in Pakistan said that if an agreement was signed on February 29, talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government, needed to cement a broader peace deal, would be slated to start on March 10.
The announcement was hailed by the international community, with NATO saying the deal could make way for “sustainable peace” in Afghanistan, while Russia labelled it an “important event” for the ending the war. Pakistan, which helped facilitate the talks between the US and the militants, also welcomed the news.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani was set to address the nation late Friday night, days after officially winning a second term in office.
In southern Kandahar province, which is seen as the Taliban’s heartland, one insurgent told AFP he had received orders to stand down. But another Taliban commander based in Kandahar, Hafiz Saeed Hedayat, said he had only been ordered to refrain from attacking major cities and highways.
