The announcement also imposes more disease reporting requirements on countries. In the wake of numerous airlines cancelling flights to China and businesses including Starbucks and McDonald’s temporarily closing hundreds of shops, Tedros said WHO was not recommending limiting travel or trade to China. “There is no reason for measures that unnecessarily interfere with international travel and trade, he said. He added that Chinese President Xi Jinping had committed to help stop the spread of the virus beyond its borders.

GENEVA, JAN 31 (AP): World Health Organization declared the outbreak sparked by a new virus in China that has spread to more than a dozen countries as a global emergency Thursday after the number of cases spiked more than tenfold in a week. China first informed WHO about

cases of the new virus in late December. To date, China has reported nearly 10,000 cases including 213 deaths. Eighteen other countries have since reported cases, as scientists race to understand how exactly the virus is spreading and how severe it is. Experts say there is significant evidence the virus is spreading among people in China and have noted with concern instances in other countries — including the United States, France, Japan, Germany, Canada,

IMPHAL, JAN 31: A mass rally taken out on the streets of Manipur’s capital on Friday against alleged atrocities and sexual violence by central security forces demanded removal of Assam Rifles from the North East. The rally was organised in the backdrop of an alleged assault and molestation of a lady IPS officer by an Assam Rifles jawan at Khudengthabi check post on NH-102 (Imphal-Moreh section) on January 19. Hundreds of people, particularly women, took part in the rally organised by All Manipur Indigenous Women Forum (AMIWF) with the supports of various women-based civil society organisations (CSOs). “NE people are not sacrificial goat, “We want peace not militarisation, “Punish Indian armed forces for committing sexual harassment, “Repeal AF-

SPA, 1958, “Stop genocidal act of Indian armed forces, etc, read some of the placards carried by the people during the rally. The rally began from the playground of Wall United Club in Imphal’s Wangkhei before meandering through the streets in the heart of the State Capital and concluded with a meeting at THAU ground. Among other things, the meeting resolved to press authorities to remove “Indian armed forces, including Assam Rifles, not only from Manipur but from the entire North Eastern states.

They observed that until the Central security forces were present, there would be no peace and women of the region could never feel safe and secure. They wondered what could befall on a civilian woman when a lady police officer, that too an IPS, was not spared by the security forces as they referred to the January 19 incident. AMIWF convener W Prabha alleged that Indian armed forces were committing various atrocities on the civilians of the region under the shadow of AFSPA 1958 and in the name of combating insurgency.

NEW DELHI, JAN 31 (PTI): The Economic Survey on Friday projected revival of economic growth to 6-6.5 per cent next fiscal and suggested that government relax the budget deficit target to boost growth from a decade low of 5 per cent this year. The Survey, released a day before Finance Minister Nirmala

67 8*9+ Sitharaman presents the Union Budget for 2020-21, suggested a cut in food subsidy to create fiscal space. Facing the worst economic slowdown since the global financial crisis of 2008-09 that worsened job prospects, the Survey said businessmen should be respected as they create

wealth and jobs. For India to become a USD 5 trillion economy by 2025, it prescribed strengthening trust in the economy, enabling and empowering markets, promotion of pro-business policies, and measures to enhance farmers’ income. It also suggested reforms to make it easier to open new businesses, register property, pay taxes and enforce contracts. The Survey called for boosting manufacturing with ‘assemble in India for the world’ concept. It batted for aggressive disinvestment to bring higher profitability and efficiency, minimal government intervention in markets, encouraging entrepreneurship, and supporting wealth creation. For the current fiscal, it projected a GDP growth of 5 per cent, the lowest in 11 years. Commenting on the Survey, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the report focuses on wealth creation for Indians. “It outlines a multi-faceted strategy to achieve a USD 5 trillion economy through enterprise, exports, ease of doing business and more, he tweeted.

DIMAPUR, JAN 31 (NPN): NPF president Dr ShĂźrhozelie Liezietsu has called upon the people to know the “true colourâ€? of Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 and its long-term perspective. Speaking at the NPF Kohima division leadership conference at party’s central office in Kohima on Friday, Liezietsu said many convincing points might have been highlighted by leaders supporting the Act like exemption of ILP States, including Nagaland, and Sixth Schedule areas from its purview. He remarked that it all might sound good but were actually cover-ups for the real motive of the Act, warning that its effect would be slowly visible through “population politicsâ€?. He warned that CAA could threaten the very existence of the people of Northeast unless they took a bold stand against it. The NPF president also reiterated that his party would always stand in support of secularism, cautioning that CAA would destroy the very fabric of secularism in India. He claimed that NPF identified itself with the Naga people and Naga nationalism, adding it could be considered as guardian of the Naga people.

He pointed out that many political parties came into being in the State claiming to be Naga regional parties, but all perished as none of them had the roots like NPF. Many formed the party only to contest the election without any aim and objective or commitment to work for the true cause of the Naga people, he alleged. He also did not rule out that NDPP might one day disappear just like other regional political parties. Liezietsu stressed that every NPF worker should remain firmly with the principles of the party and be committed to work for the welfare of Naga people. Speaking on the occasion, former MLA Kropol Vitsu called upon party leaders to remain firm with the party’s ideology and principles, and not to bargain integrity for some “package or get carried away by false proposition. Expounding the threats posed by CAA, he said once an illegal immigrant obtained Indian citizenship from another States and came to Nagaland with proper valid documents like ILP, he could not be denied entry to “our State. And thus such immigrants would come in thousands, he (Cont’d on p-7) warned. K Y M C
