World condemns Kashmir terror attack

NEW DELHI, FEB 15 (IANS): The international community has strongly condemned the terror attack by the Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 45 CRPF personnel, with US President Donald Trump asking Pakistan to “end immediately” the support and safe haven provided to all terrorist groups operating on its soil. “The US calls on Pakistan to end immediately the support and safe haven provided to all terrorist groups operating on its soil, whose only goal is to sow chaos, violence and terror in the region. This attack only strengthens our resolve to bolster counter-terrorism cooperation and coordination between the US and India,” Trump’s Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement. China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday also denounced the attack, hoping that “relevant regional countries will cooperate to cope with the threat of terrorism and jointly uphold regional peace and stability”. It added that the “JeM has been included in the

AFF Peren alleges misuse of relief fund DIMAPUR, FEB 15 (NPN): Alleging embezzlement of 2017-2018 disaster relief fund, the Aggrieved Farmers Forum (AFF) New Jalukie Village has served a five-day ultimatum on the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Peren to immediately arrest and take legal action to those staff involved in the misuse of disaster fund within five days. In an ultimatum addressed to the chairman DDMA Peren, the AFF convener Liangkebo and secretary Saipingmakbo said the fund was purely sanctioned for the affected disaster management purpose. However, they alleged that the fund could not reach the targeted genuine farmer beneficiaries due to the involvement of “some insincere and corrupted staffs”. AFF stated that for many years the ignorant farmers were given assurances that the disaster relief fund would be provided, but those assurances never materialized. Therefore, AFF New Jalukie village urged the responsible authority to take action against those involved, failing which the forum has warned to take its own course of action and the authority would bear responsible if any untoward incident happened.

NPF demands debate over CAB in NLA DIMAPUR, FEB 15 (NPN): NPF has dismissed the accusations levelled against it by NDPP on the issue of inclusion of Dimapur in ILP regime, besides demanding a debate in Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) over Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), rather than “resorting to cheap rhetoric”. In a rejoinder, the opposition party termed the allegation against NPF Legislature Party chief TR Zeliang as “absurd, immature and childlike”. NPF asked NDPP as to who had served a full five-year-term as State home minister before becoming chief minister of the State for 11 years. It said Neiphiu Rio had reigned for a longer period of time than Zeliang, who was chief minister for a mere three-and-a-half years amidst “endless turmoil” allegedly created by Rio for wanting to stay relevant in State politics. The opposition party

reminded the ruling party of the adage “Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones.” On NPF’s allegation that Rio was “directed” to remain silent by his party on CAB when he was Lok Sabha member, the opposition party asked him who in NPF had given him such a directive. And rather than spewing more lies and beating around the bush while trying to wriggle out of the mess which Rio had created in handling CAB, NPF said it would do him and his party good to apologise for the “short-sightedness” and putting the existence of the indigenous Nagas on sale just so that he could cling on to his chair. The opposition party also termed NDPP’s claim of being “consistent” in its stand vis-à-vis CAB as the greatest joke that any political party could come up with. It referred to the cabinet decisions of June

5, 2018, January 7 and 18, 2019 and finally the U-turn to oppose CAB on January 28 due to the fear of getting alienated from other Northeastern political parties to point out how inconsistent had been the ruling party’s stand on the issue. NPF further termed the charges levelled against it by NDPP for not attending the consultative meet on January 31 as preposterous when it claimed to have already made it clear that a consultative meet after all the decisions were unilaterally and arbitrarily taken by the State cabinet was nothing more than an attempt to save face. Suggesting a crash course in functioning of Parliament for the NDPP MP, the opposition party said to claim that important issues like CAB and matters relating to Nagaland were not listed initially was the “pinnacle of baloney”.

The Kashmir Police on February 8 had sent an intelligence input to the CRPF, BSF, ITBP, SSB, Army and the Air Force warning of a possible IED attack, according to a letter written by the state police Inspector General. It is not known why despite the early warning, the CRPF allowed its 78vehicle convoy carrying 2,547 security personnel to go from the transit camp in Jammu to Srinagar -- a 270km stretch. Marked as “Extremely Urgent”, the letter accessed by IANS was sent on behalf of the IGP, Kashmir, informing all security agencies to “sanitize areas properly before occupying your place or deployment as there are inputs that IEDs could be used”.

DIMAPUR, FEB 15 (NPN): All Nagaland District Ministerial Service Association (ANDMSA) has served a 30-day deadline on the government to come up with a clear-cut policy on its demands. In an ultimatum addressed to the state chief secretary, the ANDMSA president V Peter Rutsa, vice president Temjentenzuk and general secretary T Limhachan Kithan said the state government had constituted committee for comprehensive examination of its various demands. They said the committee was supposed to submit the report within two months, but the association was still waiting for the response. The association lamented that the state government has taken no tangible decision even after a lapse of 10 months on the demand of the association. ANDMSA, therefore, cautioned that government’s failure to meet its demands within stipulated period, the association would be compelled to take its own course of action, for which the association would not be held responsible.

er, police swung into action and picked up the protestors onto the bus. In Uttar Pradesh, families awaiting the arrival of mortal remains of the bravehearts raised anti-Pak slogans. Effigies of Masood Azhar, chief of Jaish-e-Mohammed (who claimed responsibility for the attack), were burnt in Varanasi as a sign of protests. In Aurangabad, sev-

eral persons congregated at Begumpura area and burnt Pakistan’s flag. In Ahmedabad people burnt the effigy of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan during the protest. In Maharashtra, women group staged protest against terror attack while Muslims of Mumbai’s Bhendi Bazar shouted slogans. In Lucknow, the Shia Muslims held protests after the Friday prayers.

Meanwhile, the impact of the terror attack was felt all the way down at Kalbari village in Assam’s Baksa district, as residents gathered to mourn the death of 48-year-old CRPF soldier Maneshwar Basumatary in the incident. Protests were held in Assam by members of Sadou Assam Goria Moriya Yuva Chatra Parishad, a minority students’ organisation, All Bodo Minority Students Union, ABVP, Krishak Shramik Unayan Parishad and Hindu Jagran Manch. DIMAPUR, FEB 15 (NPN): Search Committee for new team of Naga Hoho (NH) has appealed to all “fair-minded” Nagas, who were concerned about the common welfare, to support and cooperate with its effort to save and strengthen NH in order to pursue the “unfinished task of making Nagas as one Naga for a higher goal.” In a statement, search committee convener TN Mannen, member Niketu Iralu, member Dr P Ngully, member Kho John and member secretary Inavi Swu said they accepted the assignment to try searching for a new team not as the representative of their respective tribe but as an individual member of the Naga community. The committee said members of the new NH team would not be only knowledgeable but among the Naga best mind to lead the hoho’s destiny keeping

the delicate balancing of different interest groups. They said the new team should be one that think, believe and act beyond the prejudices of individual tribal interest for the benefit of larger common welfare and goal. “We intend to suggest the new team after wider consultation with the stakeholders mainly the tribal HoHos,” the committee members said and called upon all the Nagas to “climb down from the mountain of pride to lift up the broken lives of those in the valley of despair.” Expressing concern that Nagas today appeared to be undergoing a crisis of identity, the committee said for whatever reason today the nationalistic impulses and feeling of oneness and goodwill toward each other, which was strong in the past, was now waning giving way to tribalism, short-sighted conflict of interest and per-

sonal rivalries. They asserted that the Naga leaders began to identify more on the diversities and distinctive characteristic of each tribe rather than developing a common road map for all the Nagas to journey together toward a common future with understanding as visualised by pioneering leaders. The committee members said it appeared that today the fatigue syndrome was setting in and the divisive tendency and intolerance towards each other has percolated into the entire fabric of Naga society. Further, they said the Nagas were so divided in all spheres of life, whether in politics, in religion or in civil society. They said Nagas were drawing apart in the line of individual tribal hohos, regional grouping e.g. (ENPO, CNTC, TPO, UNC, Nagas of Nagaland and Outside etc). (Cont’d on p-5) K Y M C
