‘Bharat Bandh’ evokes mixed response

NEW DELHI, DEC 8 (PTI): Farmers took the national centrestage on Tuesday as their call for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ to push for a repeal of the new agri laws disrupted life in myriad ways with shops closed, transport affected and protesters squatting on roads and train tracks in several places, though many states remained largely unaffected. At least 20 regional and national Opposition parties backed the call for the strike. According to reports, the bandh was observed in around 10,000 places in 25 states. Emergency services were exempted and banks, too, continued operations as the pan-India shutdown, backed by most opposition parties and trade unions, rolled out noisily but peacefully with its impact felt in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, the epicentre of the snowballing protests, as well as in states such as Odisha, Maharashtra and Bihar. Security was stepped up, restive crowds demonstrated in some places and the numbers swelled at Delhi’s border points. Protesters also blocked railway tracks in places in West Bengal, Bihar and Odisha.

New height of Mount Everest 8,848.86 metres BEIJING, DEC 8 (AGENCIES): Mount Everest is higher than previously thought, Nepal and China said on Tuesday, settling a long-running conflict over the height of the world’s tallest peak that straddles their shared border. Kathmandu and Beijing had differed over its exact height of Mount Everest but after each sent an expedition of surveyors to the summit they have agreed that the official height is 8,848.86 metres (29,031.69 feet), a bit more than their previous calculations. Nepal had never previously measured the height of Mount Everest on its own but had used the 8,848 metres (29,028 feet) estimate made by the Survey of India in 1954 that includes snow. The Foreign ministers of Nepal and China jointly certified the elevation of Mount Everest at 8,848.86 metres above sea level-- 86 cm higher than what was recognised since 1954. Mountaineers had suggested a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015 which killed nearly 9,000 people in Nepal may have altered the height of Everest. (Read more on p-9)

In Delhi, where most main markets were open, tension spiralled with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party alleging that Delhi Police had put chief minister Arvind Kejriwal under house arrest. All India Kisan Sabha general secretary Hannan Mollah described the shutdown as a show of strength by the farmers. “We are standing by our demand that we want a complete repeal of the three laws and will not accept any cosmetic changes… If our demands are not met, we are ready to take our agitation to the next level,” Mollah said. In several parts of the country, including in BJP-ruled Goa, Himachal

Pradesh, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, life continued unimpeded. Over 50,000 government employees took mass casual leave in support of farmers, said Punjab Civil Secretariat Staff Association president Sukhchain Khaira. In West Bengal, where the ruling Trinamool Congress joined the Congress and the Left in supporting the shutdown but stayed away from enforcing it, the response was mixed. Railway tracks were blocked in several places and there were sit-ins on major roads. Life was hit in Bihar too with train tracks, highways and inner roads teeming with protesters as oppo-

sition parties extended their support. Train services were also affected in Odisha. In the North East, the bandh evoked partial response. Banking across the North Eastern region were partially hit as some employees joined the shutdown, according to IANS report. Flights and trains remained unaffected. In Assam, for instance, shops pulled down shutters, protesters blocked traffic and demonstrations were staged but most offices were functioning. Dozens of protesters were detained, officials said. Kerala’s Left government said it would move the Supreme Court against the three farm laws this week.

Centre government has assured the agitating farmers that it will incorporate the issues raised by them and come up with concrete proposals to amend the three farm Acts on Wednesday. Addressing a group of reporters after agitating farmers’ meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah, general secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha Hannah Mollah said the central government assured to come up with a set of amendments to the contentious farm laws for farmer groups to consider. After that, another round of discussions would be held. “As far as my information is concerned, the sixth round of meeting scheduled for December 9 stands cancelled now, as we will not wait for the Centre’s proposals,” Mollah said. Oppn to meet President: Representatives from 24 political parties are expected to meet President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday evening to raise their concerns about the three farm laws.

DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (NPN): State Agriculture & Cooperation minister, G. Kaito Aye inaugurated Nagaland’s first organic air condition (AC) market Tuesday at Nagaland State Agricultural Marketing Board complex, Agri Expo site Dimapur. Addressing the inaugural programme, Aye said it was a red letter day for the state and the farmers, adding that it was just a beginning of a new vision to promote farmers and to lift the farmers community. The minister urged the Agri and allied department and the producers to link with NSMB

for the success of the market and for the benefit of all section of the people. While encouraging farmers to look beyond local and national market, Aye also called upon the departments to play active role and take advantage of the facilities and increase the production to become selfsufficient. The minister also unveiled the foundation stone for construction of the farmers hostel at the premises. Aye was hopeful that the hostel, which will accommodate over a hundred people, would be completed within a year. Also speaking at the programme, State agriculture

production commissioner, Y Kikheto Sema asserted that it was time for the agri-allied sector to come together and focus on one mission-- sustainability of the people to become selfsufficient. With barely any scope for large and medium scale industry in the state, Kikheto said that the only way out was to focus on Agri-allied sectors which would also generate employment opportunities. He also informed about setting up of a daily organic market within the complex. In his brief report, NSAMB chief executive officer, G Ikuto Zhimomi said that the total project cost for the market was Rs. 948 lakhs, funded by Ministry of Agriculture and Framers Welfare under CSS (RKVY- additional grant 2018-19). He said that the construction began in August 2019 and was scheduled to be completed by April 2020. However, due to lockdown, the project was delayed and was completed only in (Cont’d on p-8) November.

DAYO shocked at exclusion of Foothill Road from state road projects

DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (NPN): Dimapur Ao Youth Organisation (DAYO) has expressed shock by the fact that the state government introduced 14 National Highway projects totalling Rs.4127 crore but “confined only to certain geographical areas”, while ignoring the oldest and most important road connectivity- the Foothill Road- which cuts across various districts but bypassing Assam. In a statement DAYO media cell stressed that the Foothill Road has assumed significance especially in recent times as 11 Naga tribes were subjected to “ransom” by some people in neighbouring Assam due to imposition of economic blockades as they were compelled to pass through Assam. DAYO recalled that survey had been done for the Foothill Road for which construction began in 1974 but even after 46 years, nothing has come out of it. While appreciating the leaders of yesteryears for their vision to build such a magnanimous project, DAYO expressed pain that even after 57 years of statehood, many districts were at the mercy of others because of the incomplete

DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (NPN): In response to the nation-wide protest of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) against the Central government’s decision to allow practice of modern surgical procedures by Ayurveda doctors, the Nagaland In Service Doctors’ Association (NIDA) has decided to withdraw non-COVID and other non-essential medical services across the State on December 11 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. In a statement, NIDA president Dr. E. Phyantsuthung and joint secretary Dr. Thomas Keppen, however, said that Covid related medical services and other emergency services will be functional. It may be recalled that the Central Council of Indian Medicine– the regulatory body for the study and practice of Ayurveda in India – amended the Indian Medicine Central Council (Post Graduate Ayurveda Education) Regulations, 2016, to include the regulation to permit post-graduate students of Ayurveda to receive training and practice of “shalya” and “shalakya”. While shalya refers to general surgery, shalakya is related to diseases of the ear, nose, throat, head, eye, and oro-dentistry. “It is nothing but a blatant attempt at mixopathy and Khichdification of medical education and practice,” the Indian Medical Association said last week.

Bharat bandh: Cong stages candle light vigil in Dmu DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (NPN): Joining the ‘Bharat bandh’ called by famer unions to protest the Centre’s new farm laws, Nagaland Pradesh Kisan Congress (NPCK) organized a candle vigil at Dimapur district Congress bhavan office, Tuesday. Addressing the gathering, Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) vice president, Jonathan Ao hit out at the PDA government for not speaking out on the issue of the farm bills. He, however, said that a revolution has begun starting from the farmers. Jonathan was sceptical that future of India will be like that of the pre-Independent era, as corporates would be going to do the same thing which the British had done to India by forcefully buying raw materials

Gov extends Terhünyi festival greetings DIMAPUR, DEC 8 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, R.N. Ravi has extended warm greetings to the Angami community and the people of Nagaland on the occasion of Terhünyi festival. As the festival is about thanks giving to God for the bountiful harvest and good health to the people, the governor said it is also an opportunity for the youth to learn the rich culture and beautiful traditions of the Angamis. He noted that generosity, benevolence, unity and forgiveness are some significant essence found in Terhünyi festival. The governor wished all happiness, good health, prosperity and happy celebrations and urged all to celebrate the festival by following the Covid-19 protocols.

foothill road connectivity. DAYO also lauded the Foothill Road Coordination Committee for its commendable job in restarting the project and also acknowledged the support of NPF-II under chief minister Neiphiu Rio for having sanctioned Rs.70 crore for the project. However, it said the project has grounded due to lack of funds and continuing to leave affected districts at the mercy of other state(s). DAYO also said it was astonishing that 48 MLAs representing the foothill road districts who travel by the road have chosen to remain silent when the state announced the 14 mega projects but excluded the foothill road project. In this regard, DAYO urged the state government to accord top priority for completion of the foothill road at the earliest since only a short stretch remained incomplete. While also appreciating the resumption of the construction of the bridge over Doyang river, DAYO was hopeful that the project would be completed on time, which will benefit the people of Mon, Tuensang, Longleng, Mokokchung,

Zunheboto and Wokha districts from being constantly harassed while crossing Assam. DAYO cautioned that the silence of the people of the affected districts should not be taken as weakness but as patience and anticipation that the government would meet the hopes that the unfinished road works are completed at the earliest. DAYO also placed on record the “philanthropic contribution” made by Ao Baptist Arogo Mungdang (ABAM) which donated Rs.36,56,282 towards early completion of the project. DAYO pointed out that whatever be the amount donated, the state government cannot “choose to remain silent” when churches have come forward with money and prayer and fasting as early as August 14, for early completion of the project. DAYO said while awaiting another mega project, the state government should also have the political will by sanctioning from its contingency fund to enable completion of motorable roads before the onset of monsoon, especially the recent Tsutapela gate blockade including the plight of the affected people.
