NEW DELHI, DEC 16 (NPN): The just concluded elections to the five States indicate that the graph of the BJP and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken a dip and has rather brought the opposition parties under a common banner-- to fight and defeat the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. After the recent electoral success in the BJP stronghold-- Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the Congress is in a combative mood and has put in place an aggressive strategy to dominate the political landscape. These elections have also indicated that the vote share of the BJP has taken a dip and the Congress and other players have gained significantly. The way the Opposition parties are making quick moves to unite all anti BJP forces, has already sent a message clear and loud across the country that they are not happy with the various decisions the government had taken during the last four-and-a-half years. yet against the BJP government, DMK president and Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin Sunday proposed the candidature of Congress President Rahul Gandhi as the Prime Ministerial candidate ahead of 2019 General Elections. MK Stalin declared, “…I propose we will install a new Prime Minister in Delhi, we build a new India. As son of Thalaivar Kalaignar, I propose the candidature of Rahul Gandhi from Tamil Nadu. Welcome Rahul Gandhi, give the nation good governance. Rahul has got the ability to defeat the fascist, Nazist Modi government… We will strengthen
the hands of Rahul Gandhi, we will save this nation.” Warning the people that electing the BJP would turn the clock back 50 years to the past, Stalin said, “Instead of considering himself a PM elected by the people, he has the arrogance of a king ruling by virtue of hereditary rights. He considers himself not just as the Prime Minister, but also the President, Chief Justice of the country, the Reserve Bank, the CBI and the Income Tax department. That is why the opposition has come together against him…” Cong, AAP exploring alliance in Delhi: Arch rivals Aam Aadmi Party and

PTI adds: A number of opposition leaders are understood to have reservations over naming any prime ministerial nominee for the opposition alliance for 2019 Lok Sabha elections, sources in the opposition camp said. “A number of opposition leaders are understood to have reservations against naming anyone as the prime ministerial face.... The PM name is to be decided only after the Lok Sabha results,” a top opposition leader said, reacting to MK Stalin’s remark to declare Rahul Gandhi as the PM candidate. On the other hand, sources said that TMC supremo and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee-- who has been cool about the Congress since Rahul Gandhi took over the party -- is considering forming a conglomeration of regional parties to bargain with the grand old party. According to reports, many regional leaders including Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party, Arvind Kejriwal, Uttar Pradesh leaders Mayawati and Akhilesh Yadav were interested in signing up. Banerjee has been vocal about more power and prominence to the regional parties in any pan-India coalition. Both the BJP and the Congress, she said, should give regional powers more respect, she has said. Meanwhile, The Bahujan Samaj Party and the Samajwadi Party’s support to the Congress in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have set off speculation of a similar anti-BJP grand alliance in Uttar Pradesh for the 2019 Lok Sabha election, according to political observers.
NBCC appeals for a peaceful Christmas DIMAPUR, DEC 16 (NPN): This Christmas season around, Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has urged upon believers to repent past mistakes and evil doings and demonstrate ethics of love for neighbours, peace and goodwill toward everyone that God displayed to humankind through Jesus Christ. In the message for peace and goodwill, NBCC general secretary Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho appealed to celebrate the birth of Jesus, which brought hope, love, peace, reconciliation and justice to a broken world, instead of getting caught up in festivity, celebration and merry making. Referring to the recent Riven Honda showroom shooting incident and in particular, the Aoyim Bap-
tist Church extortion case, Keyho said it was unfortunate and disheartening that church workers continued to be intimidated and threatened till date. Keyho said society could not go on like this and pointed out that these were all manifestations that the society was sinking from bad to worse, where even the church was not spared from taxation. “The civil society along with the church can go on condemning such acts in our society, but unless the fear of God resonates in us, we will continue to sink further,” NBCC warned. Keyho said people live in tension and in an uncertain state due to intimidation, extortion and corruption and called upon all to desist from such practices. He said the “spirit of
Christmas must lead us to look out for one another and shun any form of manipulative spirit born out of self interest.” The NBCC general secretary also called upon all stakeholders in society to uphold cooperation and collaboration over confrontation and conflict of all sorts. He called for paving ways through which there would be true economic and spiritual prosperity “laying a veritable foundation” for the future generation and inspiring hope in youth that they could achieve all their dreams. NBCC called for upholding and committing to things of lasting value, reach out and touch somebody, especially those who were struggling and vulnerable, and make this Christmas “memorable for someone this year”.
Baghel is C’garh’s new chief minister
R aipur , D ec 1 6 (IANS): State Congress president Bhupesh B. Baghel Baghel was on Sunday named the new Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh and he vowed in no time to cancel within 10 days bank loans taken by farmers -- a campaign promise that led to the BJP’s rout in Assembly elections. The Congress announced that he would take oath as the third Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh on Monday at 4.30 p.m.
NEW DELHI, DEC 16 (IANS): Claiming that the Supreme Court judgment on the Rafale case was “void” as it was based on “false and misleading submissions” by the Centre, the Congress on Sunday demanded an immediate recall of the apex court verdict and a notice to be issued to the Modi government for perjury and contempt of court. Congress also urged the Supreme Court to not entertain the Centre’s Saturday application seeking rectification of errors in the judgment, which the government claimed “occurred, perhaps, on account of misinterpretation” by the court. At the centre of controversy is paragraph 25 of the judgment in which the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi-led bench observed: “The pricing details have, however, been shared with the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and the CAG report has been examined by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). Only a redacted portion of the report was placed before Parliament and is in public domain.”
However, PAC Chairman Mallikarjun Kharge and the Congress have maintained that “no portion of the CAG report has been placed before Parliament or was in the public domain”. Stepping up the attack against the Modi regime, Congress leader Anand Sharma said that the Modi government not only committed perjury by making false assertions before the court but was also guilty of breach of parliamentary privileges. “The Supreme Court judgment is not only selfcontradictory but is shocking in terms of having factual inaccuracies that are a result of false and misleading submissions made by the government. “We demand that the Supreme Court immediately recalls the judgment which is void as it is made on the premise of false submission by the government. The entire episode has dented the dignity of the highest court in the country and it should give notice to the Modi government for perjury and contempt of court,” Sharma told the media here.
PM attacks Cong: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday unleashed a sharp attack on Congress for refusing to accept the Supreme Court order on the Rafale deal. The Prime Minister tore into the Congress, saying the party was “agitated” and telling “lies” as there was no “Quattrocchi uncle” or Christian Michel in BJP government’s defence deals and slammed it for trying to create “distrust” against the judiciary. “For the Congress, the defence ministry, the defence minister, officers of the Indian Air Force, government of France, are all lies... now the Supreme Court also appears to be a lie to them,” Modi said. Modi charged the Congress with building pressure on the judiciary and urged the people to remain wary of them. Prime Minister Modi charged that the Congress party has tried to weaken “each and every” democratic institution that has refused to toe its line, including the judiciary and the judicial system.
Don’t distort Naga Club history: KVC DIMAPUR, DEC 16 (NPN): Kohima Village Council (KVC) has appealed to all not to distort the history of Naga Club to suit their own interest and let historical facts remain just that so that truth could be preserved for posterity. A press release issued by ‘Committee on KVC History of Naga Club’, comprising Kohima Village Council chairman Dr. Neiphi Kire, chairman of advisory committee of APO Pheluophfelie Kesiezie, Ruzhükhrie Sekhose’s son Khriehutuo Sekhose and Rheichalie Pienyü’s grandson Prasielie Pienyü, stated that KVC, along with all fellow Nagas, desired a grand and unified Naga Club centenary celebration in the true spirit of the club. The Committee lamented that, despite the best of efforts and KVC’s appeals, reconciliation could not be brokered between Naga Club members and Naga
Students’ Federation (NSF). Consequently, it said KVC was compelled to take the decision not to participate in the separate celebration programmes of Naga Club and NSF. According to the Committee, this was deemed necessary so as to maintain a neutral, apolitical stance as well as to express dismay over the tragic disunity between two mature and respected organisations, the press release explained. The committee reiterated Kohima Village Council’s earlier stance regarding the origin of Naga Club as understood through historical facts and events. The committee narrated how the Naga Club was formed by a few salaried people comprising of school masters, interpreters, clerks, potars, chaprasis etc. of the then Naga Hill district deputy commissioner’s (DC) office on January (Cont’d on p-7) 7, 1918.
