he said. Marking a generational shift, Rahul Gandhi will be the sixth NehruGandhi scion to helm the party, taking over from his mother Sonia Gandhi who steered it through an era during which it was in power from 2004 to 2014. “This is a historic occasion. The handing over of the certificate of election is scheduled to be held on December 16,” Ramachandran said. He said Rahul Gandhi was a stickler for rules and was particular about ensuring that the elections were conducted in a transparent and meaningful manner. “Both Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi never interfered with the election authority. We were given complete freedom to execute the onerous responsibility,” he said. Rahul Gandhi, who filed his nomination for the president’s post on December 4, had been the party vice president for over four years since 2013. Among the proposers of 89 nominations -- all in support of Gandhi -- was former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who called

Rahul Gandhi the “darling” of the party. Manmohan Singh accompanied Gandhi when he filed the nomination papers. Originally 90 nomination forms were issued but one could not be filed as there were not enough

proposers. Hundreds of Congress workers and leaders from across the country thronged the party office and celebrated the announcement of Rahul Gandhi’s elevation by bursting crackers and dancing to the beat of drums.

Modi congratulates Rahul on election

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated his political bete noire, Rahul Gandhi, on his election as the new Congress President and wished him a fruitful tenure. “I congratulate Rahul Ji on his election as Congress President. My best wishes for a fruitful tenure,” Modi tweeted. Modi has been regularly mocking Gandhi, calling his elevation to head the Congress party as dynastic politics and a redux of “Aurangzeb raj”. Gandhi, 47, a threetime MP, is the sixth NehruGandhi scion to head the grand old party after his great great grandfather Motilal Nehru, his great grandfather Jawaharlal Nehru, his grandmother Indira Gandhi and his father Rajiv Gandhi. This was stated by Science & Technology secretary, Dellirose M Sakhrie while addressing the inaugural day programme of a three-day media workshop on climate change reporting at Kohima on Monday. Sakhrie said an intensive scientific study by North East Climate Change Adaptation Programme in 2012 confirmed that the region was suffering from the impact of climate change and its impact on people, fields and livestock was devastating and set to get worse. Due to its unique location and topography, the study found that the region had distinct precipitation and drainage patterns, she said, adding that the government of Nagaland had taken a very systematic and proactive approach towards the formulation of the State action plan to address climate change. DIMAPUR, DEC 11 (NPN): After the recent fall-out between chief minister, T.R. Zeliang and Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio, the two former Congress ministers (till 2003) and present top leaders of NPF have taken their fight to the media including social media in recent days. Earlier, Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio resigned as president of the parallel NPF after chief minister T.R. Zeliang patched up with Dr. Shürhozelie. Rio then released a letter addressed to Zeliang to the media in which he accused Zeliang of betrayal. The war of letters or press war between T.R. Zeliang and Neiphiu Rio has revealed the deep schism between the two who had only in June ganged up against Dr. Shürhozelie. In his no-holds barred reply, chief minister, T.R. Zeliang made it clear that Rio’s accusations that he (Zeliang) initiated the plot against Dr. Shürhozelie was baseless. Instead, Zeliang claimed that it was Rio’s emissary and relation who met him (Zeliang) on several

occasion for both of them to work together under a plan of action. As per the action plan, Zeliang claimed that he was to canvass support with BJP in Delhi for a ministerial berth for Rio and in turn get support for chief minister at home. Thereupon, Zeliang said he became chief minster through democratic and constitutional means when 36 NPF, 4 BJP and 7 independent MLAs supported him to become chief minister again. Zeliang pointed out that this exercise was commenced by Rio and his emissary. After he became chief minister, Zeliang said Rio was selected as interim president by NPF MLAs and then as president of the party and later “allegedly ratified” at the general convention on September 20 at Dimapur “as per Rio’s demand”. Throwing the ball back in Rio’s court, Zeliang said the usurpation was at Rio’s behest. Zeliang continued to fire his guns at Rio by accusing the latter of undertaking an “evaluation

mother Sonia Gandhi. Modi during his Gujarat election campaigning has been taking frequent digs at Gandhi, comparing the family to Mughal kings. “ W he n Sha hja ha n came after Jahangir or Aurangzeb came after Shahjahan, were there any elections for that?” he said last week. “I congratulate the Congress on their ‘Aurangzeb Raj’,” he said, likening Gandhi to the unpopular Mughal ruler.

exercise” of calling NPF MLAs one by one for a change of guard in his (Rio’s) favour but it went in vain. Again, Zeliang said Rio had also rejected the demand for issue of NPF ticket by NPF MLAs at a core committee meeting on November 28 on the ground that the time had not arisen. Further, Zeliang accused Rio of rejecting the call for reconciliation made by NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie without consulting him (Zeliang) or others. Firing on, Zeliang hit out saying “it is a public fact that you are the architect of NDPP, but you have neither dissociated from NDPP nor from NPF, thereby creating confusion amongst our followers.” Zeliang further clarified that fearing uncertainty of their political future, around 28 MLAs had met him and suggested that all of them must reconcile with Dr. Shürhozelie since protection of NPF’s cock symbol from being frozen was the foremost electoral imperative.

for NPF party symbol

DIMAPUR, DEC 11 (NPN): After the dramatic turn of political events which led Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio to resign as president of the parallel NPF party when chief minister T.R. Zeliang struck a reconciliation deal with their common foe Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, Rio followed it up by also withdrawing his petition filed before the Election Commission of India laying claim to the NPF symbol and flag. The petition, case No.5 of 2017 was filed by Rio with the Election Commission of India (ECI) on August 17, 2017 after both he and T.R. Zeliang joined hands to bring down Dr. Shürhozelie as chief minister and subsequently floated a parallel NPF to hijack the NPF party. In letter withdrawing his petition, Rio said he had resigned as president of the NPF as per his letter dated December 8, 2017 in the light of the evolving political situation that unfolded during the past few days. In view of the changed political equation, Rio therefore urged upon the ECI to accept his request for withdrawal of the case and to accordingly issue an appropri(Cont’d on p-7) ate order in this regard.
