NPRAAF seeks public support in the face of threats DIMAPUR, DEC 10 (NPN): Nagaland Public Rights Awareness and Action Forum (NPRAAF) has solicited strong support and co-operation from the public, saying the issue they were dealing with “is highly sensitive” and concerns several departments, and they had, in the past, received threats for taking up issues of corruption. In a press note, the forum affirmed that they would endeavour to bring the issues to their logical conclusion at all costs. NPRAAF said the forum would be able to approach the investigating agency only during the first quarter of 2018 owing to colossal task of compiling corroborated material evidence. It added that they were collecting and meticulously preparing evidence to nail faulting departments and officials, serving and retired. Meanwhile, NPRAAF appreciated the fact that, for about a week, some schools in Dimapur and Kohima had started distributing sweaters, socks and tiffin boxes. While appreciating the School Education department for implementing the project, they urged it to strictly adhere to the guidelines for the distribution of winter clothes.

DIMAPUR, DEC 10 (NPN): The consultative meeting between Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) and all apex Naga civil society organizations, held on December 9 at Niathu Resort, Dimapur, resolved to urge the Government of India (GoI) to “suspend” the upcoming assembly elections in Nagaland, to allow the negotiators and the Naga people to focus solely on delivering a solution that is acceptable, honourable and enduring to both the GoI and the Nagas. A list of decisions made at the meeting was issued by the Working Committee (WC) media cell. It said that the members at the meeting expressed deep appreciation to the NNPGs for exhibiting the spirit of oneness and working under a single platform through WC. The meeting also appreciated the GoI for extending

official invitation to the Working Committee of NNPGs in order to solve the prolonged Indo-Naga conflict. The members of the meeting also acknowledged the agreed position reached between the Centre and the NNPGs Working Committee on November 17 this year, which clearly stated that the GoI “Recognises the historical and political rights of the Nagas to self determine their future in consonance with their distinct identity”. Thus the content in the agreement reaffirms political legitimacy for the future, the meeting underlined. The house also resolved to strengthen unity of the Nagas while extending fullest support and co-operation towards the NNPGs WC in their ongoing negotiations with the GoI and urged all concerned to pray for the positive outcome of the political dialogue between the two entities.

NEW DELHI, DEC 10 (PTI): Rahul Gandhi is likely to assume the reins of the Congress on December 16, marking a generational shift in the grand old party when his mother and its longest-serving president would formally hand over the baton to him. While pageantry would herald the dawn of a new era in the party which has ruled the country for over half-a-century since independence, the 47-yearold scion of the Nehru-Gandhi family will face the daunting task of restoring lost glory to the party whose fortunes have been dwindling in the recent past. Today, the party, which once controlled almost the entire country, has its governments in just five states and the Union Territory of Puducherry. The announcement of Rahul Gandhi’s elevation, however, is likely to be made tomorrow, the last date of withdrawal of nomination for the election of the Congress president which is a one horse race. Altogether 89 nominations received in his favour were found to be valid during scrutiny. The Congress’s Central Election Authority chairman Mullapally Ramachandran, and CEA members Madhusudan Mistry and Bhubaneswar Kalita will announce that Gandhi’s was the only nomination for the top job tomorrow. Rahul Gandhi would, however, be handed over the certificate appointing him the party president on December 16 in the presence of Sonia Gandhi and other senior leaders, Ramachandran said.

for chief minister, created a spell of political instability. The three main players of the CM’s musical chair are - present chief minister T.R. Zeliang, present Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio and NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu. The tussle for the CM’s chair had caused splits within the NPF legislature four times-2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017. The NPF party was also struck by divisions in 2015 and in 2017 when a parallel body was formed twice (2015 and 2017) to dethrone the long serving NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, who was also chief minister from February 22 to July 19, 2017. Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu had the longest stint as chief minister, three times, from 2003 to 2013. NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie has been in the chair the longest since 2005 and his tenure has been extended after the 2015 general convention till 2020. And T.R. Zeliang holds the record of having outfoxed his two rivals since becoming chief minister in May 2014.

KOHIMA, DEC 10 (NPN): Altogether 2,55,398 people visited the 10-day long 18th edition of the Hornbill Festival at Naga Heritage village, Kisama. As per the information provided by Tourist officer (statistical I/c) Toka E. Tuccumi, 2401 foreign tourists, 38700 domestic tourists and 214297 local visitors witnessed the Hornbill Festival 2017. On the final day (Sunday), the festival

witnessed the highest number of visitors totalling 78658 people including 129 foreign tourists, 12055 domestic tourists and 66,474 local visitors. The 2017 festival saw a rise of over one lakh visitors as compared to last year. In 2016, the total number of visitors was 112604, from day-1 to 10 including 1646 foreign tourists, 14962 domestic tourists and 95996 local visitors. (Correspondent)

of life, from across the world participated in this year’s Hornbill Festival which is a remarkable achievement for the Tourism department, he said. Reportedly, the number of tourists had increased manifold from previous years, which was a positive sign that Nagaland has been able to gain a notable position in the world tourism map, he added.

DIMAPUR, DEC 10 (NPN): After hectic parley which preceded the signing of the ‘Memorandum of Reconciliation’ (MoR) on December 8 on behalf of the two NPF factions- NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu MLA (who has the support of ten NPF legislators and one independent) and chief minister T.R. Zeliang (who has the support of 24 NPF and seven independent MLAs) are giving the final touches to the reconciliation agreement which will then be submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI). Though the submission to the ECI is now academic since the parallel NPF party has become redundant after the resignation of its president Neiphiu Rio; the report of the reconciliation is important since the ECI has directed the NPF to submit such a report in view of the claims of the parallel NPF. NPF party sources told Nagaland Post that the reconstitution of the NPF-

led DAN ministry under chief minister T.R. Zeliang has to be done before the forthcoming winter session scheduled on December 14 and 15. It may be recalled that chief minister T.R. Zeliang told media persons on December 8, that the ministry will be reconstituted by December 12. The source also disclosed that the remaining 12 NPF legislators, which included a few ministers, forming the ‘third factor’ do now owe allegiance to either Dr. Shürhozelie or chief minister T.R. Zeliang. This reveals why factionalism remains within NPF. It was also disclosed that the entire council of ministers will resign either on Monday or Tuesday to pave way for reconstitution before the winter session. There is considerable speculation about the likely plan of action by those NPF legislators who will be left in limbo. Since 2013, Nagaland has witnessed four occasions where chief ministers were sworn-in and as many formation of ministries, as the game of musical chair
