mostly incommunicado with no workable phones or Internet connections and questions galore on what changes this would bring in a region that evokes emotive responses nationwide, Shah said in the House that “nothing will happen”. He said full statehood will be restored to Jammu and Kashmir at “appropriate time” and after “normalcy” returns. Section 144 has been imposed in the region and all means of communications have been snapped including television networks and landlines. Moreover, paramilitary forces have been deployed across Kashmir. Under Article 370 of the Constitution, Jammu and Kashmir enjoyed complete autonomy and the state legislature was free to draft its own laws except in the areas of communications, defense, finance, and foreign affairs. Also, Indian citizens were prohibited from purchasing land in the state.

NEW DELHI, AUG 5 (PTI): Some opposition parties termed the scrapping of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and its bifurcation into two union territories as a “black spot”, with Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad Monday charging that the state’s head, considered as India’s crown, has been “chopped off ” and its identity removed. Opposing the move, Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said: “In my political life, I had never even imagined that the state which is India’s crown, one day that head will be chopped off ”. “You have made light of the state of J & K,” he said, charging it was a ‘matter of shame’ that the Centre had reduced the state to a non-entity with Lt Governor’s rule. “It will be a black spot on India’s history when the day this legislation is passed (in Parliament),” Azad said. Tomorrow Bengal can become four states, or Odisha can become, what’s your lucky number, seven states. Or worse -- you could become a Union Territory. What we saw was mockery of Parliament,” he added.
