Govt to prepare for pan-India NRC Mandatory for every usual resident of India to register in the NPR NEW DELHI, AUG 3 (PTI): The government has decided to prepare a National Population Register (NPR) by September 2020 to lay the foundation for rolling out a citizens’ register across the country. The NPR will be a list of usual residents of the country. Once the NPR is completed and published, it is expected to be the basis for preparing the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC), a pan-India version of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC), an official said. For the purpose of NPR, a usual resident is defined as a person who has resided in a local area for past six months or more or a person who intends to reside in that area for the next six months or more. “In pursuance of subrule(4) of rule 3 of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003, the central

NSF directs units to hoist ‘Naga national flag’ DIMAPUR, AUG 3 (NPN): Naga Students Federation (NSF) has directed all its federating units and subordinate bodies to hoist the “Naga National Flag” at their respective headquarters to mark the “73rd Naga Independence day” on August 14, 2019. In a directive, NSF president, Ninoto Awomi, and general secretary, Liremo R. Kikon, stated that during the second official meeting of the federation held on July 30, it was resolved ‘....to celebrate/commemorate the 73rd Naga Independence day on 14th August 2019 at Naga Solidarity Park, Kohima from 11 a.m. onwards.” The house also decided to issue a directive to all its units and sub-ordinate bodies to hoist the “Naga National flag” in their respective offices. The federating units and sub-ordinate bodies have been directed to make arrangements for pasting/ hoisting of “Naga National Flags” in all strategic locations of the district or block headquarters on August 14, 2019. It has also asked for compliance report accompanied by pictorial proof, which should be forwarded to the office of the NSF on or before August 25, 2019.

government hereby decides to prepare and update the Population Register... “... And the field work for house-to-house enumeration throughout the country except Assam for collection of information relating to all persons who are usually residing within the jurisdiction of local registrar shall be undertaken between the 1st day of April, 2020 to 30th September, 2020,” said a notification issued by Vivek Joshi, Registrar General of Citizen Registration and Census Commissioner. The NPR is a register of usual residents of the country. It is being prepared at the local (village/subtown), sub-district, district, state and national level under provisions of the Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and issue of

National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003. It is mandatory for every usual resident of India to register in the NPR. The objective of the NPR is to create a comprehensive identity database of every usual resident in the country. The database would contain demographic as well as biometric particulars. The move came over a month after President Ram Nath Kovind had unveiled the Modi government’s priorities ahead. “My government has decided to implement the process of National Register of Citizens on priority basis in areas affected by infiltration,” Kovind said in his customary address on June 20 after the formation of the 17th Lok Sabha. The reason for exclud-

ing Assam is because of the ongoing exercise of NRC in the state. When the draft NRC was published in Assam on July 30 last year, there was a huge controversy over the exclusion of 40.7 lakh people from it. The draft included the names of 2.9 crore people of the 3.29 crore applicants. In addition to those excluded, the names of over a lakh people were left out in a list published last month. The final list of the NRC in Assam will be published on August 31. NPR, which is a database of 1.3 billion Indians that will be ultimately used to issue citizenship cards, will be updated with individual Aadhaar, passport, driving license, mobile, and voter identity card numbers along with the Census 2021, the Hindustan Times reported on July 9 last quoting officials who did not want to be named. This is being updated for a second time since 2015. It reported that the Union home ministry has asked the Register General of India to prepare for the exercise, an official said.

Quarter of global population at tuberculosis risk LONDON, AUG 3 (IANS): A quarter of the world’s population is at high risk of developing tuberculosis, reveals a new study. The study, published in European Respiratory Journal, shows that one in four people in the world carries tuberculosis bacterium in the body. Tuberculosis, which is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, affects more than 10 million people every year and kills up to 2 million, making it the most deadly of the infectious diseases. Besides, several people are infected with the tuberculosis bacterium without having active disease called latent tuberculosis. The study, which is based on tests from 351,811 individuals, emphasises that it will be extremely difficult to reach the WHO’s goal of eliminating tuberculosis by 2035. “At any rate, the objective cannot be achieved without treating the large incidence of latent tuberculosis, since all infected people are at the risk of developing active tuberculosis disease later in life,” said

Christian Wejse, Associate Professor at Aarhus University, Denmark. For the study, researchers from Denmark and Sweden reviewed 88 scientific studies from 36 different countries to describe the occurrence of latent tuberculosis infection. The study indicates that somewhere between one-fifth and onefourth of the population have latent tuberculosis. Tuberculosis is also known as “TB”. It is a disease caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It mainly infects lungs but can also spread to other body parts like brain and spinal cord. Those infections which do not have symptoms, is known as latent

tuberculosis. Nearly 10% of latent infections progress to active disease which if left untreated kills about half of those affected. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium is spread through the air when a person with lungs tuberculosis coughs, sneezes, spits, laughs, or talks. It is contagious, but it is not easy to catch. Symptoms of TB: During a latent stage, TB has no symptoms i.e when TB is inactive . When TB is active cough, fever, and other symptoms can appear. As TB affects lungs and other parts of body so symptoms will vary accordingly. Tuberculosis in brain: It can lead to meningitis. In bones: There may be spinal pain and joint destruction. The liver and kidneys: Blood in urine The heart: Cardiac tamponade and impare the ability to pump blood. Lungs: Cough for 3 or more weeks, chest pain, night sweats, chills, fever, weight loss and loss of appetite.
