Govt unveils mega bank mergers

NEW DELHI, AUG 30 (PTI): Continuing its firefight against an ever-deepening economic slowdown, the government on Friday unveiled a mega plan to merge 10 public sector banks into four with a view to creating fewer and stronger global-sized lenders with robust balance sheets that can be used to boost credit and spur growth. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who had last week announced the first of three planned stimulus packages, made the announcement of the mergers just before official data showed that growth in Asia’s third largest economy slumped to an over sixyear low of 5 per cent in the April-June quarter of 2019-20. The mergers announced on Friday, together with two set consolidations done last year, will reduce the number of public sector banks to 12 from 27 in 2017. At a media briefing, she said Oriental Bank of Commerce and United Bank will merge with Punjab National Bank to create the nation’s second-largest lender behind State Bank of India. Also, Syndicate Bank

will merge with Canara Bank while Andhra Bank and Cor poration Bank would subsume into Union Bank of India, and Allahabad Bank will be amalgamated with Indian Bank. Also, the government will infuse Rs 52,250 crore in 10 banks to boost their balance sheets. “Banks with a strong national presence and global reach is what we want, Sitharaman said. “Scaling up will only allow them to have lot more resources and therefore the lending cost

can come down. After the merger, India will have 12 “solidly present, well-consolidated, energised, adequately capital endowed banks, she said. “We are trying to build NextGen banks. Sitharaman had last week unveiled the first of three planned stimulus packages that included a reduction of taxes, improvement of liquidity in the banking sector (formal and shadow), increased government spending on auto and infrastructure, and acceler-

ated refunds of goods and services tax (GST). This was followed by liberalisation of foreign investment rules in four sectors, including coal mining, contract manufacturing, single-brand retail and digital media. These, together with the announcement on Friday and one more stimulus package possibly for the real estate sector in the next few days, are aimed at pulling out the economy from its worst showing in over six years. Finance Secretary Rajiv Kumar said employee interest will be protected in the bank merger process. In 2017, the government merged SBI with five associate banks, which was followed by the merger of Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank with Bank of Baroda last year to create the thirdlargest bank by loans in the country. The consolidation, the government feels, will make bank balance sheets stronger with greater capacity to lend and strengthen them against piling debt. After the mergers, the country will have 12 public sector banks, including SBI and Bank of Baroda.

India’s GDP dips to over 6-yr low of 5% NEW DELHI, AUG 30 (PTI): India’s economic growth on Friday slumped for the fifth straight quarter to an over six-year low of 5 per cent in the three months ended June as consumer demand and private investment slowed amid deteriorating global environment. Having lost the tag of world’s fastest-growing economy earlier this year, India’s GDP growth was behind China’s 6.2 per cent in April-June, its weakest pace in at least 27 years. GDP of India, Asia’s third-largest economy, slumped by larger than expected 5 per cent in AprilJune, the slowest pace since January-March 2013. The growth stood at 5.8 per cent in JanuaryMarch of 2019 and 8 per cent of April-June 2018, according to official data released on Friday. The previous low in GDP growth was recorded at 4.3 per cent in the January-March quarter of 201213. India’s economic growth stood at 8 per cent in the same quarter of 2018-19. RBI had marginally lowered GDP growth projection for 2019-20 to 6.9 per cent from 7 per cent projected earlier in the June

policy and underlined the need for addressing growth concerns by boosting aggregate demand. So far, RBI has cut interest rate by 110 basis points this year. Chief Economic Adviser K V Subramanian said GDP numbers indicate that growth while still high has shown some slowdown. “Similar phenomenon has been observed previously in the last quarter of 2013-14, he said. He said the government has been taking all necessary steps in short term and medium term to take care of the situation. He said Budget for 2019-20 has announced Rs 100 lakh crore investment in infrastructure creation in the next five years which has the ability to crowd in investment. Fitch Group’s India Ratings and Research chief economist Devendra Pant said that declining savings especially household saving is a major challenge for the economy and is leading to structural growth slowdown. The rating agency believed that there is no quickfix solution to the downturn which has been in the making for the past few years.

Slump in GDP ‘Modimade disaster’: Cong

The Congress on Friday hit out at the government, saying the slump in GDP is a “Modi-made disaster, and demanded that a financial emergency be declared in the country. The truth can no longer be hidden despite “headline management by the ruling dispensation, the opposition party said. Global issues had no role play in the slump in GDP, the Congress claimed, adding that a white paper should be released on the “shrinking economy and rising frauds. The Congress said low GDP growth was expected and alleged that BJP-led central government had single-handedly “murdered the Indian economy. “Convenient time to hold a PC and attempt headline manipulation, but you can’t hide from the truth Madam FM Nirmala Sitharaman, it said Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the financial mismanagement and a spate of economic emergency prevails and pervades the entire economy. “The dismal and disappointing GDP data only reflects it.

Flash flood that has destroyed large tracts of paddy fields at Thekrejuma village. (NP)

Correspondent

KOHIMA AUG 30 (NPN): In a delayed report, flash floods affected two villages in Kohima district on August 28. A flash flood reportedly occurred in Chathe river near Thekrejuma village early on August 28, following which over 30 paddy fields were reportedly inundated and bridge, electric poles, water pipes and several agricultural links road were damaged. Thekrejuma village falls under Western Angami region, but the road that leads to the village goes via

Medziphema, some 16 km away from the town. It falls under SechĂź Zubza subdivisional headquarters. According to SechĂź Zubza SDO (C) Mhomo Tungoe, the remote village was completely cut off as the only bridge connecting the village had also been washed away. The village was without electricity as some electric poles were also damaged by the flash flood. Tungoe said he had received a call around 6 am that flash floods had occurred in Chathe river (Thekrujuma) around 5 a.m. and that the floodwaters had destroyed

huge stretches of paddy fields on both sides of the river, while roads communication and electricity supplies too were disrupted. On reaching the village along with DBs, he said he found that the only bridge over Chathe connecting the village had been washed away and the electric poles supplying electricity to the village were destroyed. Vast stretches of paddy fields lying on both banks of the river too were inundated by floodwaters stretching to almost a kilometre along the river course. He said about 20 farmers claimed to have been

affected, although accurate assessment of their damage could not be made as the river was still turbulent. While the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kohima were immediately informed about the ground situation, the SDO said a team of officials from agriculture department too were dispatched the next day. The villagers had already constructed a temporary foot bridge over the river the next day, he added. Providing an assessment of the damage caused by the flash flood, Thekrejuma Village Council chairman

Rßßngutuo Kruse mentioned that over 30 paddy fields stretching for about a kilometre were inundated, crops in about two-thirds of the paddy fields were completely damaged. And as the only bridge connecting the village was washed away, an emergency foot bridge had been constructed on Friday, he added. However, as the flash flood had also widened the breadth of the river, Kruse expressed apprehension that constructing a temporary bridge for vehicular movement would be difficult. Altogether eight electric poles were also destroyed, for which the entire village was reeling under complete darkness, Kruse said, adding as the flash flood had flowed down from above the village, almost all irrigation canals were also damaged, which had become a cause for worry for the standing paddy.
