Magisterial probe ordered into Manipur jail killings Muslim body requests for last rites for two foreigners

Correspondent IMPHAL, AUG 1: Manipur government has ordered a magisterial probe into the killing of three inmates, including two foreign nationals in violence inside Sajiwa Central Jail in Imphal East district on July 30, Manipur deputy chief minister Gaikhangam informed on Monday. Gaikhangam said that the report of inquiry would be published within a month. The government will study the loopholes of security arrangements and rules and regulation insiden jail after the inquiry report comes out. He also said all measures would be taken so that there would not be repeat of such case in jail. Confusion prevails on the nationality of two foreigners, who had claimed themselves

as national of Saudi Arab at the time of detention. On Sunday, Saudi high commissioner to India confirmed that there was no Saudi Arabian prisoner in Indian jail. It is learnt that the duo was arrested from Moreh town bordering Myanmar for not possessing valid documents to enter into India. A local court sentenced them for a year under Foreigners Act. Gaikhangam said the state government has not received any communication from Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on its letter on deportation of the duo to their own country. “The state government wrote to MEA for taking up the matter of deportation of the duo to their own country in July 2014. They completed jail term on June 23, 2014. But till today

we have not received any word from MEA.” He said. He further said that the deceased Thangminlian Zou (29) of Churachandpur district has been staying together with the two foreigners on their request. The trio requested the jail authority to allow them to stay in one cell so that Zou could learn Arabic from them. So they have been staying together hardly for two weeks i.e., from July 23 last, Gaikhangam said. Meanwhile, Pangal (Manipuri Muslim) Political Forum (PPF) has urged the state home department to allow it to perform the last rites of the two foreigners. The forum has also submitted a memorandum to deputy CM Gaikhangam, PPF spokesperson MI khan told reporters here on Monday.

Meghalaya annuls land lease Uranium miner

Correspondent

SHILLONG, AUG 1: The Mukul Sangma-led government in Meghalaya on Monday annulled the decision taken during D.D.Lapang regime which leased 422 hectares of land in to Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) for pre-mining activities in South West Khasi Hill district. “We (the cabinet) have revoked the earlier cabinet decision taken on August 24, 2009 relating to pre-mining activities which is a precursor to uranium mining,” Chief Minister Sangma told journalists after chairing the cabinet meeting. The decision to annul the leasing of land to the UCIL was adopted after the government-owned mining company had recently floated the Expression of Interest (EOI) for a mine and processing plant of uranium ore in South West Khasi Hills district without the consent of the state government. “This decision is a strong message that any initiatives relating to pre-mining activities which is precursor to uranium mining cannot be allowed until and unless the people of the state are taken on board,” Sangma said. He said the cabinet has also directed to concerned departments to communicate the cabinet’s decision to the UCIL. Meghalaya is the third uranium-rich state in the country after Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh. The state ac-

counts for 16 percent of India’s uranium reserves, with deposits estimated to be around 9,500 tonnes and 4,000 tonnes respectively at Domiasiat and Wakhaji, both in South West Khasi hills district. However, the proposed open-cast uranium mining in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district has been hanging fire since 1992 after several groups expressed fears of radiation impact on human health and environmental degradation.

Guwahati, Aug 1 (PTI): Over a hundred wild animals, including 10 one-horned rhinoceros, swamp deer and hog deer, have been rescued by mobile veterinary service units working near the flooded Kaziranga forest, officials said. The mobile service units, run jointly by the Assam Forest Department and two wildlife NGOs, have handled 107 rescue cases in the last seven days. Altogether 62 hog deer have been released after being rescued by the team, officials of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), which is involved in the rescue efforts, said. Out of the three eastern swamp deer rescued, two survived and were brought to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation for treatment. The mobile units also participated in the rescue of 10 Asian one-horned rhinoceros, of which one died before it could be brought to the rescue centre and another was rescued and released shortly after. Eight rhinos, all calves separated from their mothers, have been kept under observation at the large animal nursery at the centre, said Rathin Barman, Deputy Director of WTI.
