Fires devastating Amazon rainforest Global leaders call for urgent action to avert ‘astronomical’ impacts to ‘life on earth’ B R A S I L I A , AU G 2 5 (AGENCIES): Brazil’s army on Sunday deployed aircraft to battle the raging fires in the Amazon as global concern and outrage over the potential consequences—and the destructive causes—of the disaster grow. Thousands of fires are burning in Brazil, many of them in the Amazon rainforest, which is pumping alarming quantities of carbon into the world’s atmosphere. The Amazon Rainforest is 5.5 million km² The military operations involving C-130 aircraft to put out fires came after Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro triggered global protests over his government’s policies and failure to take swift action to combat the flames. This particular rainforest is often called the “lungs of the earth,” and 60 per cent of it lies within Brazil. Trees store carbon

PAC lauds Dmu police D I M A P U R , AU G 2 5 (NPN): Public Action Committee (PAC) of Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has lauded Dimapur Police in apprehending four extortionists from Dimapur on August 20. In a press note, PAC convenor, Vekhosayi Nyekha expressed shock that “criminals from outside our state have begun to make our commercial city a haven to hide and sojourn”. PAC asserted that the cross border extortionists from Ukhrul, Manipur; Hisar, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh, apprehended from Dimapur, should not be granted bail under any circumstances and awarded befitting punishment. absorbed from the atmosphere, and the Amazon each year takes in as much as 2 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide — a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. So basically all these trees, take the toxins in the air and convert them to clean oxygen so we can breathe properly. Official data released Saturday backs up the call for swift action. Agence France-Presse reported, “Some 1,130 new fires were ignited between Friday and Saturday, according to Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE).” So far this year, the country has witnessed 79,513 fires, more than half of which occurred

“Our house is burning. Literally. The Amazon rain forest—the lungs which produces 20 percent of our planet’s oxygen—is on fire,” tweeted Macron. Bolsonaro then accused Macron of using the fires “for personal political gains” and said the French president had a “sensationalist tone.” Pope Francis on Sunday added his voice to the chorus of concern. “We are all worried about the vast fires that have developed in the Amazon,” he said, speaking to the public in St Peter’s Square. “That lung of forests,” the pontiff added, “is vital for our planet.” Bolsonaro—who previously asserted there weren’t

resources to battle the fires— has baselessly suggested the fires could have been started by NGOs upset with his policies. But environmental campaigners say his policies promoting deforestation and other manifestations of Amazon exploitation are the main culprits. According to preliminary satellite data from Brazil’s space agency, trees were being cleared at the rate of five football pitches every minute. Allegedly, these fires are being started with the aim of deforestation, so the land can be used for business purposes. Moutinho, who has been working in the Amazon forests for

Arun Jaitley cremated with State honours

4% reservation in govt jobs for PwDs

NEW DELHI, AUG 25 (PTI): Former finance minister Arun Jaitley was cremated at Nigambodh Ghat here with full State honours on Sunday as scores of his admirers, BJP workers and top leaders from across the political spectrum paid their last respects. Jaitley’s son Rohan lit the pyre amid chanting of vedic mantras. Hundreds of mourners, who converged at the cremation ground along the banks of the Yamuna, bid a tearful adieu to the BJP stalwart who passed away on Saturday at the age of 66. Senior leaders laid wreaths on the mortal remains and a gun salute was given before the last rites. Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, BJP veteran LK Advani, party president and Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, party’s working president J P Nadda, Union ministers

in the Amazon, according to the agency. That marks an 82 percent increase from 2018. The fires were discussed by global leaders meeting in Biarritz, France for the G7 summit. French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday, “We are all agreed on helping those countries which have been hit by the fires as fast as possible.” “Our teams are making contact with all the Amazon countries so we can finalize some very concrete commitments involving technical resources and funding,” said Macron. The French leader and Bolsonaro last week sparred on Twitter over the fires.

Nirmala Sitharaman, Smriti Irani, Piyush Goyal, Harsh Vardhan, Pratap Chandra Sarangi, Prakash Javadekar, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Kapil Sibal, NCP leader Praful Patel and Yoga guru Ramdev were among those present at the cremation ground. Unmindful of the heavy rains, the people stood on their heels, cheek by jowl to have a last glimpse of the leader. While some were sheltered by the tents erected on the premises, leaders like Nitish Kumar, Piyush Goyal, Kailash Vijayvargia, Prakash Chandra Sarangi and Prakash Javadekar got drenched. A visibly emotional Naidu, who had worked closely with Jaitley in the BJP, stood with folded hands for several minutes near the body. Chief ministers Arvind Kejriwal, Devendra Fadnavis, Vijay Rupani, B S Yediyurappa, Nitish Ku-

mar, Trivendra Singh Rawat and M L Khattar were also there. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a foreign visit, on Saturday paid an emotional tribute to Jaitley, saying he cannot imagine he was far away in Bahrain when his “dear friend” and party colleague passed away in New Delhi. His death is another jolt to the ruling party after the demise of Sushma Swaraj, a contemporary of Jaitley and one of its prominent faces, on August 6 and Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar in March this year. Wrapped in the national flag, Jaitley’s body was brought at around 11 am to the BJP headquarters located on the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg from his Kailash Colony residence. BJP workers queued up in large numbers outside the party headquarters since morning to pay their last respects to the leader.

D I M A P U R , AU G 2 5 (NPN): The state government has notified the implementation of Sec. 34 of RPwD Act 2016-- 4% reservation in government jobs for persons with benchmark disabilities with immediate effect. Informing this in a press note, state commissioner for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), Diethono Nakhro said the identification of jobs for the various disability categories will be carried out by the departments and reviewed by an expert committee in compliance with Sec. 33 (ii) of the Act. Further, Nakhro said that the government also notified the Nagaland Rights of Persons with Disabilities Rules 2016 as per the provisions laid down in Section 101 (1) of the RPwD Act 2016. The State Disability Rules was approved by the Cabinet and notified on August 16, 2019, she added.

nearly 30 years, said fires are mostly set to clear land for farming, ranching or logging, and they can easily get out of control, especially during the July-November dry season. Brazil’s National Space Research Institute, which monitors deforestation, has recorded 40,341 wildfires across the Amazon this year, as of Thursday. That’s 40,341 fires in less than five days. That’s an 85 per cent rise over last year’s figure. The UN secretary general and many world leaders and celebrities have expressed concern. The Amazon will be high on the agenda for G7 leaders at a summit in France this weekend. They are likely to make a strong statement condemning the recent increase in deforestation and urge Brazil to restore the Amazon protections that previously made the country a global environmental leader. There aren’t any exact figures for the areas burnt, but deforestation as a whole has accelerated in the Amazon this year. The figures show that 9,250 square km of forest were lost between January 1 and August 1. (More on p-9)

est for the smooth functioning of the social welfare department. The Anganwadi workers and helpers alleged that it had been a decade that the social welfare department had been utterly unfair to them, adding it was a great shame and a major failure on the part of the State government as the department was one of the most important departments in a State like Nagaland. Claiming that various important welfare programmes and services were being initiated by them, Anganwadi workers and helpers said the State government should not underestimate and neglect them. The authority concerned should focus and take important steps for their uplift so that the socio-economic status of State progressed further, they added.

NSCN (R) clarifies, calls for restraint

DIMAPUR, AUG 25 (NPN): NSCN (Reformation) president Y. Wangtin Naga has said that the unfortunate murder of “lt. col.” Toishe Yeptho of NSCN (I-M) on August 16, followed by alleged assassination attempt on the life of NSCN (R) defence kilonser Khekhato by NSCN (I-M) cadres on August 20, were uncalled for and should be condemned outright by Nagas as these incidents had disturbed God-gifted peaceful atmosphere. In a clarification, Wangtin said NSCN (R) had no negative intention towards any Naga brothers and, therefore, there was no reason why any worker of the organisation would take the life of any Naga brothers at this juncture when every Naga citizen was longing for an early solution to the Naga political problem. Instead, he regretted all lost souls of Naga brothers in the political crisis in the past. (Cont’d on p-7) “When our Lord God has

announced. “We will co-operate during the implementation and transitional period together with tribal bodies and frontal organisations of Nagaland. We are prepared to welcome honourable, acceptable and peaceful political solution as cherished by our people for decades,” it added. Mentioning that Nagas had been yearning for real peace and stability for over five decades now, the memorandum pointed out that every decade saw one or the other agreement or statutes mounted over the Nagas, orchestrated by few without taking the confidence of stakeholders. Instead of pursuing political dialogue over a political problem, the federation said the heavily militarised Naga land saw only military engagements between Indian Army and Naga nationalists. The conflict intensified resulting in innumerable loss to lives on both sides, even as new armed Naga nationalist organisations emerged, it pointed out.

restored peace in our broken home and whole things improved, we must thank God instead of destroying His gift,” he remarked. Appealing to all rightthinking Naga citizens to deliver impartial investigation report for peaceful resolution of the tension between NSCN (I-M) and NSCN (R), Wangtin promised to deliver impartial judgement if any worker of his organisation was found guilty of involvement in the murder of Toishe. Till such a report was available, he appealed to NSCN (I-M) to display maturity by refraining from taking any further step. He also urged all important civil society groups and churches to deeply investigate the incident so as to help resolve the issue before it went out of hand. And as promised, he said NSCN (R) would do justice in the fear of living God who saw and knew everything. K Y M C
