Rahul, Opposition delegation sent back from Srinagar NEW DELHI, AUG 24 (AGENCIES): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, along with a delegation of Opposition leaders, has been sent back from Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar airport. Gandhi along with other Opposition leaders landed at airport around 2 p.m. on Saturday, to review the situation in state, where restrictions have been imposed since the central government withdrew its special status under Article 370 and split the state into two Union Territories earlier this month. Among the parties that were part of the Opposition delegation that will land at Srinagar are Congress, CPI-M, CPI, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Nationalist Congress Party, Trinamool Congress and the DMK, PTI reported, quoting sources. On returning to Delhi, Rahul said that it is clear that the situation in the Valley is not normal. “Some days ago I was invited by Governor to visit J&K. I accepted the invitation. We wanted to get a sense of what ppl are going through, but we weren’t allowed beyond the airport. Press ppl with us were mishandled, beaten. It’s clear that situation in J&K isn’t normal,” he said.

to Jaitley, a quintessential moderate who was never associated with the hard edges of Hindutva politics. He became a trusted friend of Narendra Modi as he smoothed the path for the Gujarat leader’s rise in the BJP by helping him win key allies. Jaitley played an instrumental role in implementation of Modi’s various ambitious schemes and programmes after the BJP came to power in May 2014. His most important legacy will be rolling out of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, the biggest tax reforms after Independence. Prime Minister Modi, who is on a three-nation tour, said he had lost a
valued friend and conveyed his condolences to Jaitley’s wife and son. “With the demise of Arun Jaitley Ji, I have lost a valued friend, whom I have had the honour of knowing for decades. His insight on issues and nuanced understanding of matters had very few parallels. He lived well, leaving us all with innumerable happy memories. We will miss him!” the prime minister said. In his two brief stints as defence minister, Jaitley cleared the path for ushering in a raft of long-pending reforms in the armed forces and came out with key policy initiatives with an aim to make India self reliant in
defence production. He was perhaps among the BJP bigwigs who made a smooth transition from the Atal-Advani era in the party to the one where Narendra Modi dominated, ushering in the rise of new generation leaders. His death is another jolt to the BJP after the demise of Sushma Swaraj, a contemporary of Jaitley and one of its prominent faces, on August 6. Party leaders mourned Jaitley’s loss, remembering him as a dear colleague, mentor and guide and hailing his contribution to the growth of the party and the nation. Jaitley, an urbane and media-savvy leader and a legal luminary, was one of
Nagas need upright leaders: Dr. SC Jamir Correspondent
KOHIMA, AUG 24 (NPN): Former governor and former chief minister, Dr. S.C. Jamir, Saturday said that the Naga society needed honest and upright leaders to lead people in the right way. Addressing the Kingdom Leaders Prayer Breakfast Programme held at De Oriental Hotel here, Dr. Jamir said that troubled states like Nagaland needed a leader like Nehemiah of the Bible who was honest, trustworthy and had great concern for his own people. Citing the example of Nehemiah, Jamir called upon the Naga people to forgo the position, comfort and sacrifice life for the sake of the people by rising up and rebuild the collapsed system of the society. Veteran politician lamented that the good qualities of forefathers like truthfulness, courage and uprightness were diminishing in the

present Naga society. He said Nagas were suffering in different forms because they were diverting from truth. Stressing the need for visionary leaders in Naga society, Jamir said a good leader should able to recognize and foresee the problem before people faced emergency situation. He reminded that the gathering that any God-fearing leader would do what was right for the people and society. In his address, Leaders Arise Nagaland Founder Rev. Luoliehu Yimsung
shared the seven pillars that influenced the society namely government, religion, business and finance, education, media fraternity, family and Art and entertainment. Asserting that the time has come to make the right choices for the glory of God, Rev. Yimsung stated in such a defining moment of Nagaland “we need Godly leaders in government and in all fields.” Reverend also called upon the leaders of different organisations, government, teachers, media fraternity, business community, artists and sportspersons across Nagaland to come closer to God and be instruments for His glory in all their profession. the sharpest political minds not only within the BJP but also in the larger political spectrum where he made lifelong allies cutting across the ideological divide. Paying homage to Jaitley, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and other opposition leaders said his contribution to public life will be remembered forever. A gifted raconteur whose interest spanned from politics to Bollywood to sports, his informal gatherings were always a full house as journalists, friends and politicians enjoyed his wit, sarcasm- which singed his colleagues and adversaries alike- and grasp of issues that he delivered in his ever relaxed and warm demeanour. Jaitley was the bridge that the BJP used to win over new allies, and also its warm, affable and persuasive face to bring opposition parties around on key issues. In his condolence message, L K Advani said Jaitley was known and respected for his “sharp, analytical mind and everyone in the BJP always depended on him for finding solutions to complex issues.” Jaitley had undergone a renal transplant on
May 14 last year at AIIMS, and his health condition gradually worsened, forcing him to take frequent breaks from his work. He was also diagnosed with soft tissue cancer. He opted out of the second term of the BJP-led NDA government as Modi led the saffron party to a landslide win in May this year. Jaitley, who had lost the 2014 general election did not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, because of his ill-health. He was serving his fourth straight term in Rajya Sabha, where he entered in 2000 and went on to become the Leader of the Opposition and then the Leader of the House as the BJP came to power in 2014. He stopped attending office since early April last year, but was back in the finance ministry on August 23, 2018. In September 2014, he had undergone bariatric surgery to shed weight he had gained because of a chronic diabetic condition. After his demise, Jaitley’s body was taken to his South Delhi residence where several top leaders paid floral tributes. On Sunday morning, his body will be taken to the BJP headquarters before the final journey.

Nagas await historic day: NSCN (I-M) three months, it became all the more interesting as it was the third time when the Modi led BJP government had come out with such an assuring tone. Nagaland Governor and Interlocutor, was speaking with much stronger passion to solve the Naga political problem that has hung on for too long. Recalling the journey of “Indo-Naga political” talks spanning over twenty two (22) years, NSCN (I-M) said government of India has done a great job to assure the Nagas that they deserved solution which should be honourable and acceptable. It said that by giving official recognition to the unique history and situation of the Nagas was taken as the correct step towards this direction. MIP said the momentum finally led to the signing of the historic August 3, 2015 Framework Agreement. It said three years was a long period but the Framework Agreement was yet to have its fruition as the Government of India was going slow in taking its stand on core issues.
NSCN (I-M) reminded that the Framework Agreement, which was initiated and signed by late chairman Isak Chishi Swu, that had taken the political talks to a critical stage. It said the indelible document (Framework Agreement), that provided everything to give the Nagas an honourable settlement, was finally signed between NSCN chief negotiator Th. Muivah and India’s Interlocutor R.N. Assembly polls unlikely till 2021 in Jammu & Kashmir: ECI sources JAMMU/SRINAGAR, AUG 24 (IANS): Top sources in the Election Commission of India (ECI) said on Saturday that the Assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir are likely to be deferred till 2021. Sources in the ECI said the process of delimitation of Assembly seats is expected to begin by the end of November and the process would take around 14 months to complete. “The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is expected to write to the ECI after October 31, 2019 to start the process of delimitation for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. “The MHA communication cannot be sent to the ECI for delimitation before October 31 because constitutionally, the bifurcation of J&K into the Union Territories of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir will come into effect that day. “Once the ECI receives the mandatory communication from the MHA, the process of delimitation will begin. It would take around a month to
finalise the sub-committees and schedules for undertaking the process. “The EC will complete the delimitation process in 14 months in 9-10 phases as it is mandatory to complete all the required processes and procedures to hold the process,” top sources in the ECI said. This means that Assembly elections in J&K will have to wait till 2021, till the ECI formally announces the completion of the delimitation process. After the Ladakh division separates from Jammu and Kashmir, the total number of Assembly seats will come down from 87 to 83 since the four seats of Leh, Kargil, Zanskar and Nubra would no longer be part of the J&K legislative assembly. At present, the Valley has 46 assembly seats while the Jammu division has 37. It is likely that since the delimitation process would take into account the geographical area of the two regions, Jammu division would benefit by the creation of seven assembly seats through the delimitation process.
