Miscreants halt 4-lane works
Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, AUG 23, (NPN): The state government’s vow to protect business investors has fallen flat when the firm- M/s ECI Engineering & Construction Co.Ltd- entrusted with the 4-lane project along NH 29 from Chathe bridge (Patkai College junction) to Piphema, has had to stop all works since the past ten days due to regular threats for money, thefts of several vehicles including excavators and finally, assault on its labourers who have since fled and abandoned the camp. A senior staff of the firm told Nagaland Post here Thursday, that all these incidents had taken place despite deployment of a platoon of IRB and Home Guards provided for security. Even FIRs lodged with various Police Stations have failed to either trace the whereabouts of the stolen vehicles/equipments or the identities of the 40 to 50 gang of miscreants. The work on the 4-lane had begun in earnest since 2016 despite numerous threats from various miscreants but after the brutal attack on the labour camp some ten days back, the

Editor Nagaland Post, Geoffrey Yaden, who has had a long acquaintance of over two decades with Kuldip Nayar, has also sent a condolence message to Mrs. Bharti Nayar. Nayar had a deep affection for North East and its people. He visited Kohima during the mid-90s to show solidarity with the people and speak on issues of human rights at a time when the entire state was reeling under violence. As the Indian High Commissioner to the UK (1990), Nayar used his influence to overrule strong objections against bringing the body of late A.Z. Phizo from London to India. Nayar was also a regular columnists of Nagaland Post.
Just hours before his death, veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar had penned an article, in which he asked the Modi government to focus on development and good governance in the North East rather than imposing its “Hindutva philosophies”. The 95-year-old, who breathed his last around 12.30 am in a Delhi hospital, also wrote that illegal migration will remain a security challenge for India if no adequate measures are taken including checking and deporting illegal migrants. His article titled ‘Immigrants or vote banks?’ was published in the Nagpur edition of Lokmat Times on Thursday morning, hours after his death. Nayar wrote that the Central government should initiate steps to address the pending inter-state issues in the North East, especially the boundary dispute of Assam with Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Manipur also has a boundary problem with Mizoram and Nagaland, yet

the region is united on many important issues like harassment of people from North East particularly the student community in some parts of the country, especially the national capital, the prolific journalist, columnist and author wrote. He said the BJP is well entrenched in six of the seven states in the North East and that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his party know well that political loyalities in the region can change very fast. Nayar said the central BJP government has introduced several measures for the development in the North East, trying to connect with the people of the region emotionally. “The ruling BJP must remember that the North East is a plural society devoid of much communal violence unlike the Hindi heartland. It is paramount that the Centre should concentrate more on development and good governance rather than impose its Hindutva philosophies,” the article read. (Cont’d on p-7)
‘No chance at all’: Vajpayee’s ashes brought to Nagaland Govt sets up panel CEC on holding on women quota D I M A P U R , AU G 2 3 simultaneous polls (NPN): State government
NEW DELHI, AUG 23 (AGENCIES): Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat on Thursday categorically ruled out any possibility of holding simultaneous elections for both the Lok Sabha and the state assemblies without a “legal framework” in place. “Koi chance nahi” (no chance at all), Rawat told reporters in Aurangabad when asked if it was still feasible to hold the parallel polls. His clarification comes amid a growing debate on holding simultaneous polls, with BJP chief Amit Shah making a strong pitch for the idea. He argued that one election would check expenditure and ensure that the nation is not in “election mode” throughout the year.

Meanwhile, in a letter to DC Dimapur, the firm has sought the intervention of the administration and also reaffirmed its commitment to complete the work for construction of the 4-lane which is also being monitored both by the Central and State governments. The letter, also made it clear that the company was solely dependent upon the support from the state government to create a conducive atmosphere so as to move ahead with the project’s scheduled completion. The firm also stated that more than 1,000 labourers were required to work on the project and so required immediate intervention from the state government. It cautioned that work cannot be done under an environment where miscreants were able to have a field day without any fear of the authorities. The firm expressed the hope that the administration would take appropriate measures to prevent recurrence of such incidents in order to enable the company to carry out all its works for completion of the 4-lane highway.
