Ex-PM Atal Behari Vajpayee passes away
In his passing away, the governor said the nation has lost a statesman, a great human being, a poet, tall leader and above all a patriot. The governor, on behalf of the people of Nagaland and on his own behalf, offered homage to the great soul and condole his death. He further prayed that the departed soul rest in peace. CM: Expressing deep suddenness over the demise of former Prime Minister of India, Atal Behari Vajpayee, the chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, said late Vajpayee was a towering personality of modern India and would be remembered as one of the most popular Prime Ministers of the country. In his condolence message, Rio said India has lost one of its great sons and the entire nation is bereaved. He said people of Nagaland have a special place for the former prime minister in their hearts. In October 2003, during his threeday visit to Nagaland, Rio said the then prime minister made a historic statement at Kohima, which he said was “a defining moment in the relationship between Nagas and the rest of the country.”
According to chief minister, the former prime minister stated that “It is true that, of all the States in India, Nagaland has a unique history. We are sensitive to this historical fact”. He further said, “We do not wish to impose any external customs on you. India has a long tradition of tolerating diverse customs and ways of life. You have nothing to fear”. In the same address, Vajpayee said, “I wish to assure you on another score, India is a secular nation, both because of our Constitution and, more importantly, because of our civilizational ethos. As you know, India is home to all faiths in the world. India has respected and protected all faiths.” Rio stated that such an approach and such reassuring statements won the hearts of the Naga people and greatly contributed towards taking the peace process forward. Rio recalled that former prime minister also had a serious concern for the development of Nagaland with the announcement of the Prime Minister’s package for development of Nagaland and for empowerment of the youth.

NEW DELHI, AUG 16 (PTI): Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of India’s most charismatic leaders who led the nation through several crises and held together a tenuous coalition with his inclusive politics, died here today. He was 93. Vajpayee, a bachelor, is survived by his adopted daughter Namita Kaul Bhattacharya. His death was announced by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital where he was admitted June 11 with a variety of ailments. “It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of Former Prime Minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, at 05:05 PM,” the AIIMS said in a statement. It said his condition was stable for the last nine weeks, but “unfortunately, his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support systems.” “Despite the best of efforts, we have lost him today. clear that the end was near. Vajpayee, who joined the Rastriya Swamsevak Sangha (RSS) in 1947 rose through ranks to become a stalwart of the BJP and was the first non-Congress prime minister to complete a full
term in office. The body was taken to Vajpayee’s house on Krishna Menon Marg in Lutyen’s Delhi for the public to pay last respects to the departed leader. Seen as a moderate face of BJP, Vajpayee’s first became prime minister in 1996, leading a shaky coalition whose members were suspicious of the BJP’s rightwing politics. It lasted for 13 days and collapsed after losing a vote of no-confidence. His second stint as prime minister was in 1998 when the NDA again came to power but that lasted for just 13 months. Finally, the NDA with Vajpayee as PM returned to power in 1999 and was voted out in 2004. A 10-time MP of the Lok Sabha, Vajpayee announced his retirement from politics in 2005. He was also a member of the Rajya Sabha twice. Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh to a schoolteacher, Krishna Bihari Vajpayee, and Krishna Devi. Today, his birthday is celebrated as ‘Good Governance Day’.
DIMAPUR, AUG 16 (NPN): Department of power on Thursday informed that there would be no power supply to various parts of Dimapur and its adjoining areas August 1823 from 4 am to 8 am. In a press release, Transmission Division Dimapur executive engineer Er. Nitovi A Wotsa said the power shutdown was being necessitated due to the department taking up upgradation works of 132/33kV 100MVA and bus bar modification at Nagarjan sub-station. Following areas will be affected –– Metha, Thahekhu, Dobhinalla, PWD, Forest, Duncan, Town Area, Signal on August 18 and August 21; Kuda, Walford, Rajbari and adjoining areas on August 19 and August 22; Ganeshnagar, Doyapur, Dhansiripar, Razhaphe & Rangapahar Army Cantonment, Industrial Estate, Sub Jail, Referral, Lengrijan, DC Court, Chekiye, Naharbari, Thilixu, Full Nagarjan, Power Grid on August 20 and August 23. The department has requested all affected consumers to bear with it for the inconvenience.

D I M A P U R , AU G 1 6 (NPN): Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) has resolved to pursue its demand for amending the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2001. Addressing media persons at Western Chakhesang Hoho building Thursday, JCC acting convener Vekhosayi Nyekha said the committee’s demand for amendment of the Act still stood and that it would continue to pressurise the State government till it was amended as desired by the people. JCC was formed to oppose holding of urban local body polls with 33% reservation for women. Nyekha was elected as acting convener at the JCC core committee meeting on Wednesday after its convener Supu Jamir voluntarily resigned. Nyekha also reiterated that it was not

The Union Cabinet on Thursday announced national mourning for seven days from August 16-22 as a mark of respect to India’s former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Vajpayee will be accorded State Funeral at Smriti Sthal, New Delhi at 4 p.m. Friday. Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said Central government offices across the country will observe a half-day on Friday. “The Cabinet has announced half day holiday in the afternoon of the day of funeral in all Central government offices & CPSUs across the country, and Delhi government offices. In his condolence message, Acharya described late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, as a Statesman, great human being, a poet at heart, an extraordinary orator and an outstanding parliamentarian. “He personified a true Indian leader,” Acharya said. Governor said he was fortunate and blessed as party worker to have close contact and had guidance for a long period of 20 years with late Vajpayee. Recalling Vajpayee as a renowned poet, Acharya said former prime minister wrote with regard to his poetry, “My poetry is a declaration of war, not an exordium to defeat. It is not the defeated soldier’s drumbeat of despair, but the fighting warrior’s will to win. It is not the dispirited voice of dejection but the stirring shout of victory.”

Schools, govt offices to remain closed today The national f lag would be flown at half mast for seven days and there will be no official entertainment during the period of the state mourning. According to an official bulletin: “All government offices, educational institutions, both government and private, will remain closed on August 17, 2018 as a mark of respect to the departed dignitary.”
ANCSU shocked, disturbed by JVC ultimatum to president Gov Acharya appoints brand D I M A P U R , AU G 1 6 ( N P N ) : A ll Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) expressed shock and dismay over the ultimatum served on its president Katho P. Awomi by Jotsoma Village Council (JVC) that appeared in the media on Thursday. Coming out in defence of its president Katho P.Awomi, ANCSU education secretary Kruto Tetseo, explained that the issue was only to impress upon the State government to settle the Kohima Science College Jotsoma land encroachment, scholarship and land encroachment/dispute issues all over the State at the earliest. ANCSU opined that the issue should not be personalised and also denied that the union had threatened to vandalise any private or government building. ANCSU also asserted it had only asked district
administration and the State government to take action against those three government institutions to set an example for individuals encroaching on such lands and that eviction should be done only after proper land survey. It also claimed that it at the meeting with the chief minister, his colleague and other officials on August 14, its president had only demanded that these institutions could not be evicted, then the government should acquire more land for the Kohima Science College on the condition that the existing government institutions should not occupy more land of the college. It further claimed that the news that appeared in the local dailies on April 24 this year was had misquoted its president . College out of Jotsoma village, ANCSU expressed surprise as to what conspired in the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) was spread by those who did not attend the meeting and attributed comments to its leader which he had never uttered. ANCSU also said on the day of the meeting with chief minister Rio, one of the government officials openly challenged its president to go and remove the three government institutions adding such statement was totally uncalled for. Under such circumstances, the meeting ended inconclusive. During the meeting, ANCSU said its president only suggested that if the government was unable to settle the land encroachment issue then Kohima Science College issue should be shifted to a place where it could grow and become a university soon. However, it
said the suggestion was offthe-record and was only be taken as a means to put pressure on the government. Pointing out that the union had been appealing to the State government for settling the Kohima Science College land encroachment issue for the past many years, ANCSU asserted that it neither had taken or would take any step that would insult any individual or group. The union reiterated that its fight was for justice of the student community and clarified that it had no other intention. ANCSU expressed the hope that by explaining its side of the story, JVC would realise that it was all part of the delaying tactics being played by the State government.
