BJP manifesto with 75 promises for India HIGHLIGHTS OF BJP’s POLL MANIFESTO
Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and other leaders release the party’s manifesto. (PTI),
NEW DELHI, APR 8 (AGENCIES): Unwavering on its core principles on Ram temple, Article 370 and Uniform Civil Code, the BJP on Monday released its manifesto committing itself to extend the contentious exercise of National Register of Citizen (NRC) across India, and enactment of Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, pension for small farmers etc. Top BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, launched the 48-page manifesto, described by the party as its “Sankalp Patra”. Calling them “75 promises for India@75,” BJP said the manifesto reflected “people’s Mann Ki Baat.” In the manifesto, the party once again highlighted its agenda of enacting the controversial CAB: “We are committed to the enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Bill for the protection of individuals of religious minority communities from neighboring countries escaping
Vice Admiral Bimal challenges supersession
Vice Admiral Bimal Verma
NEW DELHI, APR 8 (AGENCIES): Vice Admiral Bimal Verma moved the Armed Forces Tribunal today over the government superceding him and appointing his junior, Vice Admiral Karambir Singh as the next Navy chief. Vice Admiral Bimal Verma has accused the government of ignoring his seniority. He will be represented by his daughter at the Tribunal. Vice Admiral Karambir Singh will supersede Vice Admiral Verma, when he takes over as the take over as the new Navy Chief after Admiral Sunil Lanba retires on May 31. This is the second time that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has overlooked seniority for merit in the appointment of service chiefs. In 2016, General Bipin Rawat was appointed Army Chief superseding Lt Gen Praveen Bakshi, who headed the Eastern Command and was next in line to be the army chief.

Nagaland, Mnp, M’laya to have 9-hr voting
IANS Adds:: Three North Eastern states-- Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya will have 9-hour voting due to early sunrise, sunset and a few other reasons. In the other five states of the region, it will be the normal 10-hour polling. According to an Election Commission (EC) notification, the voting will start at 7 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. in the three states. In Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura polling will be conducted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Abhijit Sinha said early sunrise and sunset were the main reasons for the nine-hour voting. “The 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. polling hours are being followed for many years,” Sinha told IANS over phone. Other reasons, according to Sinha are remoteness of polling stations and mountainous treks.
NDPP warns legal action against Therie, NPF DIMAPUR, APR 8 (NPN): Reacting to statements by opposition that the fake documents/letters were doctored, NDPP has threatened legal action against NPF and NPCC president K Therie, if they did not substantiate their allegations with proof. In a communiqué, the ruling party likened the allegations to “slander” and “libel” as it these tarnished the image of two of the most prominent public leaders of the State – chief minister Neiphiu Rio and its president Chingwang Konyak. NDPP also termed it as “nothing but wild fantasy” the allegations by NPF that the seven NPF legislator were lured when they (MLAs ) declared their support for PDA on their own accord since they disagreed with the principle and stand of their party in not fielding a candidate for the Parliamentary election. NDPP advised the opposition party to first retrospect and change its system of politics before levelling “false and defaming” statements otherwise, NPF may further “lose more than what they have already lost”. The fact that NPF candidate for the 26 Aonglenden by-election withdrew his candidature also only proved the disillusionment within NPF party rank and file on the policies and ideologies of their leaders, it added. Further, denying the accusations
that it had “doctored” the documents, NDPP regretted that despite having publicly denounced the letters circulating in various social media platforms and filing FIR, NPF and NPCC president accused it of doctoring the documents. NDPP said it was “baffled” by these accusations and wondered about the wisdom of the opposition in arriving at such an “illogical conclusion” since no sane person or organisation which was guilty or a crime, would demand an investigation by filing a complaint. NDPP said the accusations only displayed the state of mind of the opposition parties and their leaders as they were bereft of any politics or ideologies. Since the matter was now under investigation, NDPP expressed confidence that truth will ultimately prevail Terming the allegation by the opposition parties and their leaders that the forged documents were deliberately circulated by NDPP in order to lure the two NPP and seven NPF MLAs as nothing short of insanity, the ruling party asserted that its leaders were not children but seasoned politicians who would never resort to such “childish and amateur politics” unlike the opposition party leaders who changed their political colours and identity like seasons of (Cont’d on p-7) the year.
NPF asks NDPP to clarify on ‘adversaries’ DIMAPUR, APR 8 (NPN): NPF, through its press bureau, has urged law enforcing agencies, including Election Commission of India (ECI), to expedite the investigation into the fake letter controversy and reveal the truth at the earliest and placed on record recent political events. NPF alleged that after having failed to score points over the recent fake letters and documents, the NDPP has blamed it on “adversaries”. In this regard, NPF said such insinuation could no longer be kept in suspense but that NDPP must clarify who it mean by “adversaries”? NPF said it was indisputable that the letters bore the signatures of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP president Chingwang Konyak adding that either these were “genuine and were leaked or otherwise,” as they included names of NPF legislators to be in-
ducted as cabinet ministers and advisers which was to lure more NPF legislators with plump portfolios in “printed form”. NPF said such attempts to entice NPF legislators only revealed the “deepening trust-deficit” of the NDPP with its coalition partners such as BJP, JDU and Independent despite having majority. It said that recently, when 18 NPF MLAs wrote to the legislature party leader (T.R. Zeliang) the letter went viral on social media and NDPP was quick to air its “self righteousness” but that it was exposed when seven NPF legislators later decided to support NDPP chief minister Neiphiu Rio. NPF said the decision by the seven party MLAs to support Rio and party candidate’s unilateral decision to withdraw from contesting the Aonglenden by-poll “were stage
managed from the private residence of Neiphiu Rio at Sovima Dimapur.” It also said recent imbroglio only raises the doubt on whether the fake letter/documents could have also originated from the same place. NPF said while NDPP claimed it supports clean elections, yet such “undemocratic approaches” of NDPP exposed itself. NPF also reminded NDPP on the need for political principles and to realise that people of Nagaland voted only for 18 NDPP members but that the act of horse trading will have to end sooner than later since commitments made through cash or kind will not impact current NPF legislators. Instead, NPF said NDPP has jeopardised the careers of the seven MLAs after they are disqualified from the house and the NDPP will be solely responsible.
