NDPP condemns ‘fake letters’

DIMAPUR, APR 6 (NPN): In a clear case of fake news, social media was rife with forged letters purportedly signed by chief minister Nephiu Rio on opening a channel with Rahul Gandhi for a post-poll alliance (in the event Congress party comes to power). Another letter purportedly signed by chief minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP president Chingwang Konyak, contained names of legislators from the opposition NPF, to be appointed as ministers and advisers. The letters (More on p-7) were clearly meant to create political confusion just five days before polling to the Lok Sabha and by election on April 11. Reacting to the list, NDPP through it media and communication committee accused its “adversaries” of being responsible for preparing the letters with forged signatures of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP chief Chingwang Konyak. NDPP in its statement condemned the adversaries who it said made the “false and fake documents”, with forged signatures to create “I don’t know why he confusion. According to wants to be a politician.” NDPP, the adversaries of the

party had prepared the socalled the letter titled “Top Confidential” addressed to Congress president Rahul Gandhi under the letter head of the chief minister with his forged signature, extending support to Rahul’s leadership in the event of government formation at the Centre after the Lok Sabha polls. In the letter titled “Top Confidential” dated March 28, which was also forward-

ed to the media, Rio referred to an alleged telephonic conversation with Rahul Gandhi for a post-poll alliance with Congress and to be part of a “secular government under Rahul’s leadership in the event of government formation at the Centre. The letter also stated that the coalition partners of the PDA have agreed in principle to forge such a post-poll alliance.

NDPP said the other “fake confidential letter” dated March 27, purportedly signed by Neiphiu Rio and Chingwang Konyak, claimed to be a plan to induct three NPF legislators as ministers and five NPF legislators as advisors. The list also includes two former NPP legislators as minister and advisor, who had recently merged with NDPP. (Cont’d on p-11)

U N G M A ( M O KO KC HUNG), APR 6 (NPN): Veteran Naga politician and former governor and five-time chief minister of Nagaland, Dr. S.C. Jamir Saturday said that the 5-year rule of the BJP-led NDA government has left the country unstable and therefore the secular parties were rallying together to save the country from an “impending perilous situation.” Addressing a joint rally of the Congress and NPF parties for INC candidate (Lok Sabha) KL Chishi at Babu Tsubu, Ungma here on Saturday, Dr. Jamir, stated that because of the “communal BJP and its allies”, all secular parties in the country have combined together to fight this election. He said that the Congress party since India’s independence had ruled the country by taking people of all races and religious beliefs on board. Dr. Jamir said he was opposed to the BJP’s ideology of “one nation, one people, one religion.” The veteran politician also stated that the world

recognizes the Nagas as a distinct people because of their cultural identity and Christian faith. However, he said that this “Naga identity” was at risk of being wiped out by the onslaught of the BJP-NDA ideologies and asked if any Naga would want to accept a government that stands to destroy the Naga identity. He said that the Congress, NPF and other likeminded parties rallying together against the BJPNDPP was not for money or power but to safeguard the Naga people. He also urged Ungma villagers to seek divine wisdom and vote for the secular Congress party’s candidates to salvage the village’s reputation for posterity’s sake. Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) president, K Therie, who also addressed the joint rally, said that the Congress party joining forces with NPF and other like-minded parties was solely for the sake of safeguarding Nagaland and the Naga people. Maintaining that Congress stood for unity in diversity, Therie said the party

was fighting the ensuing Lok Sabha elections to uphold secularism, scrap the Citizenship Amendment Bill and to find a solution to the Naga political problem. Appealing for Alemjongshi, Congress candidate for the by-election to 26 Aonglengden constituency, the NPCC president said Alemjongshi was a mature and experienced leader, adding that he would, if elected, be the “salt” in the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. Former chief minister and leader of opposition, TR Zeliang, also said that NPF rallying with Congress was an “issue-based support” and the coming together of “secular forces.” Stating that the NPF and Congress protested the CAB, he said NPF also stood for protecting the rights of the Naga people. Appealing to the conscience of the people, Zeliang said that Congress would lose the elections if it was to be decided by money, but added Congress would win if it was about policies. A vote for Congress is proof that Nagas are not fooled, said Zeliang. (Cont’d on p-11)

If patriotic, BJP will respect Rajiv, Indira: Priyanka

DC-516

K Y M C

FATEHPUR (UP), APR 6 (IANS): Attacking the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Saturday said if its leaders are truly patriotic, they would respect country’s martyrs -- including former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi -- irrespective of their caste, religion or political background. “If BJP leaders, who talk big about patriotism, are true patriots, they would respect martyrs of the country -- whether that martyr is Hindu or Muslim or the father of their political opponent. He is a martyr. You can’t be selective in which martyr you respect. If you are true patriots, respect all martyrs including Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi,” she said at a street corner meeting here. “If they are truly patriotic, they would not have turned away and shut their doors on farmers when they came to Delhi to tell the government the problems they were facing... If they are truly patriotic, they would have delivered on the promise of creating jobs that they made to you,” she added. Calling the upcoming elections crucial for deciding the fate of the country, Vadra told the gathering that she was there to remind them of what true patriotism was all about. K Y M C
