DIMAPUR, APR 2 (NPN): Nagaland governor PB Acharya on Monday said the current education system in the country was based on what the British had outlined and was promoting a kind of knowledge that made people selfcentred, besides leading to obliteration of indigenous languages. Speaking as chief guest at the “Academic Assembly & Felicitation to Prominent Personalities, Governor Award and Scholarship to Students” programme organised by Janjati Shiksha Samiti (JSS), an NGO, at Kevijau village here on Monday, the governor said knowledge should make people realise their debts to society and the country. Pointing out that English was being favoured in the country, he stressed that content of a speech should really matter and not the language in which the speech was delivered. He also advocated for a primary education system that made learning of mother (Cont’d on p-11) tongue mandatory.

He also called on the people to change their mindset and recognise the good deeds of the leaders. Referring to Piyong Temjen Jamir, recipient of Padma Shri (India’s fourth highest civilian honour) for literature and education in January 2018, the governor regretted that he was yet to be formally recognised by his own village. Commenting on the present system of education in the State and country, Acharya pointed out that graduates were not employable and had become redundant, and hence stressed for skill development. The governor said it was for this reason he had urged colleges and universi-

NEW DELHI, APR 2 (AGENCIES): Fuel prices on Monday inched up further, resulting in petrol hitting a fresh four-year high and diesel climbing to an all-time record high across India. The price of petrol stood at Rs 73.83 per litre while diesel was priced at Rs 64.69 a litre in Delhi, according to official data from Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). In Nagaland’s capital Kohima, price of petrol stood at Rs 72.31 per litre and diesel at Rs 63.09 a litre. According to TOI, global crude oil prices hold the key to the prices you’re charged whenever you go to refuel at a fuel pump. That is not all. A major share of petrol and diesel prices are made up of taxes- excise duty collected by the Centre and Value Added Tax (VAT) collected by the states. As a matter of fact, 48.2 per cent of what you pay for petrol is central and state taxes while for diesel, excise and VAT add up to 38.9 per cent. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had raised excise duty nine times between November 2014 and January 2016 to shore up finances as global oil prices fell, but then cut the tax just once in October last year by Rs 2 a litre.

The Army and paramilitary forces were also put on standby in Punjab. Over 100 passenger and mail train services were affected as protesters squatted on the tracks to enforce the all-India shutdown, officials said, adding that the routes were largely restored. While some states had ordered closure of educational institutions as a precautionary measure, incidents of arson, firing and vandalism were reported from MP, UP, Rajasthan, Bihar and Punjab, among other places. Home Minister Rajnath Singh appealed for peace, while Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said the government was not a party to the Supreme Court decision on the SC/ST Act and “respectfully” did not agree with its reasoning behind the verdict. Prasad also said the government has filed a very comprehensive review petition in the matter.

A view of the Indira Gandhi in Kohima, proposed to be renamed in memory of late Dr. T. Ao. (NP)

KOHIMA, APR 2 (NPN): After the newly installed eople’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) cabinet had on Day One (March 8), decided to rename Indira Gandhi Stadium after legendary Indian football captain Dr. T. Ao, the Neiphiu Rio-led PDA government is now on two minds about the matter in view of strong objections from various quarters.

Hours later after assuming office on March 8, the PDA government decided to honour Dr. T. Ao, who had captained the Indian football team at the 1948 London Olympics, by renaming the stadium after him to coincide with his birth centenary. Talking to Nagaland Post here Monday, Youth Resource and Sports minister, Zalie Nyiekha said that the decision to rename the

stadium after Dr. T. Ao was likely to be reviewed at the next cabinet meeting. The reason for the PDA’s quandary comes in the wake of stiff objection to the State government’s decision from the main opposition NPF during the recently concluded session and several sections of the society. Some opposition legislators during the recently concluded budget session

of Nagaland Legislative Assembly went on to accuse the PDA government of showing utter disrespect to India’s first woman prime minister Indira Gandhi. Opposition member Vikheho Swu had asked the treasury bench to clarify as to why the cabinet decision (to rename the IG Stadium) did not find mention in the chief minister’s budget speech. Swu also drove the point that Dr T Ao deserved to be honoured with a new stadium and not by renaming an existing one in the name of the former Prime Minister. Former speaker and NPF member Dr. Chotisuh Sazo also took a jibe by wondering if renaming a stadium, which was already named after the late prime minister was part of the PDA government’s slogan of “change”.
