Cong sounds 2019 poll bugle
“The manner in which the Modi government is functioning, it can also pose a threat to democracy in the country. In the last few days, what happened in Indian Parliament is before the people of the country (to see),” he said, addressing the ‘Jan Akrosh Rally’ at Ramlila Maidan today.

NEW DELHI, APR 29 (AGENCIES): Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday launched his party’s campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections through a mega rally organised at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan. Speaking in front of a handsome crowd, Rahul Gandhi accused PM Modi of being “hollow” and speaking “lies” and said the “chowkidar” was silent on issues concerning judiciary, women’s safety, Dalits, youth, farmers besides corruption. In his nearly 30minute speech, the Congress president said that the PM’s recent trip to China was ‘agenda-less’ and slammed him for not speaking in Parliament on issues like Rafale jet deal with France
Tripura CM’s controversial remarks irk PM GUWAHATI, APR 29 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has summoned Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb over his controversial statements. A senior BJP leader on Sunday said Deb has been summoned to meet Modi and BJP President Amit Shah on May 2 in the national capital. Deb, who took charge of Tripura last month, has made several remarks which have been triggered widespread criticism. He had stated that the Internet and satellite communication existed during the Mahabharata era. He also questioned the crowning of Diana Hayden as Miss World in 1997. Deb also stated that mechanical engineers should not opt for civil services, but civil engineers should. He has also asked the educated youth to set up paan shops instead of running after political parties to get government jobs. He also advised the youths to not to waste their crucial time and instead milk cows for livelihood. “Senior party leaders are miffed over the controversies triggered by Deb. Deb is just saying anything and everything. Modi will talk to him,” said a senior party leader on Sunday.

or unemployment. Expressing confidence of winning the upcoming Karnataka Assembly elections, Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress would win the next year’s general elections as well as all Assembly elections scheduled to be held before it. Citing the Congress’s spirited performance in Gujarat, Gandhi said “you see what will happen in Karnataka”. “I met him on the agrarian issues. But he did not listen to us,” the Congress president said. UPA chairperson and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi also used the occasion to slam PM Modi while accusing him of “betraying” the people by not
keeping its promises. Sonia Gandhi alleged that corruption has taken ‘deeper roots’ since BJP came to power. Continuing her tirade, Sonia charged the BJP-led NDA government of muzzling dissenting voices and dividing communities with an eye on electoral gains. Speaking during the rally, former PM Manmohan Singh said that the Modi government is consistently undermining country’s Constitutional institutions. “The manner in which the Modi government is functioning, it can also pose a threat to democracy in the country. In the last few days, what happened in Indian Parliament is before the people of the country (to see),” Manmohan Singh said.
Amit Shah’s stinging response
Soon after Congress’ ‘Jan Akrosh’ rally, BJP president Amit Shah responded to Rahul, Sonia’s charges in the same vein and termed the rally as ‘Parivar Akrosh rally’ (family wrath rally) in what was an apparent dig at the party’s dynastic politics. In a series of tweets, Amit Shah described Congress as power hungry and demanded answers from the opposition party for not letting the Parliament work during the Budget session. “A dynasty and their courtiers, who were sent out of state after state by ‘Jan Aadesh’ now pretend to represent ‘Jan Akrosh’. Congress rally is nothing but a ‘Parivar Akrosh Rally’ which highlights their increasing irrelevance,” Amit Shah said.
Petroleum dealers Writ petition on alleged call for state-wide fund diversion by PDA govt indefinite strike Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, APR 29 (NPN): Petroleum dealers across the state on Sunday decided to call for an indefinite state-wide strike from April 30, in protest against the abduction of an oil tanker driver and helper on April 22 near new Helipong village under Tuensang district by armed miscreants. According to reports, Kohima Petroleum Dealers Association (KPDA), Dimapur Petroleum Dealers Association (DPDA), Nagaland Tanker Transport Association (NTTA) and Oil Tanker Drivers’ Union (OTDU) decided to take recourse to the extreme step since those involved in the kidnap, including the authorities, had failed to provide information about the two victims and to have them released unharmed. According to sources, all fuel outlets will remain shut and oil tankers will stay off the road during the strike. It may be recalled that the unions on April 27 had issued a 48-hour deadline on the deputy commissioner (DC) Tuensang to ensure safe release of the abducted members-- Tula Ram Bura Gohain (driver) and Adman Surin (helper). However, till date their whereabouts remain unknown. Despite appeals made by various organizations to release the duo, there has been no positive development so far. On Saturday, Eastern Nagaland Peoples Organization had requested KPDA, DPDA, NTTA and OTDU to extend the 48-hour deadline served on DC Tuensang taking into consideration the convenience of the public. ENPO general secretary Manlang Phom said the union was scheduled to hold a meeting with Tuensang district administration and police on Sunday to discuss the matter.
DIMAPUR, APR 29 (NPN): Taking legal recourse to put a spanner in the works, a PIL was filed before the Kohima Bench of Gauhati High Court alleging that the PDA government had attempted to divert Rs 15 crore provided under Special Road Development Programme (SRDP 2017-18) which had been secured by the previous NPF-led DAN government under then chief minister TR Zeliang. The litigants- Jeange KN Konyak and Y Hetokhu Awomiclaimed that the funds for roads under SRDP fund 2017 were allegedly being diverted by the PDA government in a bid to claim credit. In this regard, the court listed the case for hearing on May 14 next. The two petitioners claimed that the SRDP Fund 2017-18 was released to a work agency after necessary approval by the government, although it could not be formally released to the respective divisions due to election code of conduct coming into effect following announcement of Assembly election schedule to the State by Election Commission of India. Alleging that the PDA government replaced 15 projects after it came to power and that only two out of 17 projects were retained, the petitioners stated that Rs 15
crore, which was supposed to be released to various divisions, was parked with PWD (R&B) chief engineer’s (CE) office awaiting completion of the election process. They alleged that when Rio spotted the amount lying with CE, he “hastily directed” the department to move for re-appropriation. They said in record time within one week, the sanctioned and released fund was allegedly diverted to his village and a few other villages in Dimapur district to suit his interest. In addition, the litigants also alleged that Rs 5 crore was earmarked for supply of bitumen in the name of the chief minister’s son in-law. They alleged that the amount was re-deposited to treasuries & accounts and drawn against those diverted projects. The petitioners asserted that this lapse of procedural matter, both in planning and finance departments, goes to show the “stark reality of PDA government and its promise of bringing change to Nagaland”. Fearing that the fund in question would be liquidated if there was no court intervention, they claimed that similar changes were in the offing as the PDA government was in a hurry to empty the State exchequer as they know their days were numbered.
T.R. Zeliang asks Kire clan Power outage to substantiate allegations in 5 districts DIMAPUR, APR 29 (NPN): After the NPF legislature responded to the ultimatum served on it including leader of the opposition NPF and former chief minister, T.R. Zeliang over allegations of irregularities in RD fund allotments and also the undue favour shown on a particular village allegedly by principal secretary RD, Lhoubeilatuo Kire, NPF leader T.R. Zeliang has come out defending himself. In a statement, Zeliang reaffirmed that NPF as a party will continue to play its role as a responsible opposition in the interest of the Nagas and that any attempt to silence it by roping one’s own village, clan or family “will be the greatest political evil” that the state would ever experience. In a lengthy rejoinder,
Zeliang also clarified that the current issue was not between two people or between two clans/villages or NGOs, but between the R.D. department and the general MNREGS beneficiaries. He said since NPF had provided sufficient clarification after making the allegation, it was now the “bounden duty” of the department to come out with clarification with facts and figures by now to put all doubts and confusion to rest. . Zeliang also said he might have committed some mistakes in the past but admitted that he did not recall any action(s) that he had initiated against Lhoubeilatuo Kire “based on hatred or enmity some 20 years back” which was alleged by the clan. UNTABA reiterates on boundary issue DIMAPUR, APR 29 (NPN): United Naga Tribes Association on Border Areas (UNTABA) has once again reminded the government of India and the negotiating parties that any political agreement without settling the crux of the issue (interstate boundary issue between Assam and Nagaland), should not be considered a final solution to the protracted Indo-Naga political problem. In a statement, UNTABA chairman Hukavi T. Yeputhomi and general secretary Imsumongba Pongen speculated that unless the crux of the issue was settled in the right perspective the land between Brahmaputra valley and the Naga “country” may become a new “Middle-East”. UNTABA therefore, said any speculated outcome to the talks without Naga lands and the subsequent re-alignment of present political boundar-
ies according to the historical perspective should be brushed aside. According to UNTABA, union home minister Rajnath Singh, minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju, interlocutor R. N. Ravi and some secretaries in the Home Ministry used to utter “intangible” statements on the status of the ongoing Indo-Naga political talks completely disregarding the basic political foundation made between the government of India and NSCN (I-M) and also with the Working Group of the 6 NNPGs. UNTABA said that the fact of the Naga political issue was “the inalienable rights of the Naga people over its lands” unilaterally allowed to be occupied by Assam, by the GoI in spite of political agreements made with the Naga people during the Interim Government of India of pre-
Independent India in June 1947 (9 Points Agreement/ Hydari Ali Agreement) as well as after the declaration of independence of India as sovereign Nation in 1960, the 10 Points Agreement. The agreements envisaged the right to transfer back all the Naga traditional and ancestral lands under illegal occupation of Assam back to the Naga people. “This is the crux of the matter of the emergence of Naga political struggle. Nothing more, nothing less”, it added. U N TA BA f u r t h e r pointed out that the ongoing political talk was between Naga people and the government of India and not with the people of Manipur or with Arunachal. Therefore, it advised the government of India to be extremely cautious in allowing its functionaries to express their so called “tangible” solutions on the ongoing Indo-Naga political talk. K Y M C
