5 yrs of BJP rule divided India: Faleiro

Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, APR 1 (NPN): AICC general secretary and incharge of North East, Luizinho Faleiro said the five years under BJP rule has taken India back to 50 years with terrible setback and degradation in many areas. Addressing media persons at Hotel Saramati here today, Faleiro went on to cite how the economy has been degraded, farmers in distress and committing suicide, unemployment rising among youth while industrial growth has stagnated and most importantly, north east states aflame with burning issues. Faleiro said north east states were experiencing a difficult period as BJP and its “master” the RSS, were on a mission to incite a culture of communal hatred and vendetta among minorities especially Christians, Muslims and tribal people. He also accused BJP and RSS of trying to destroy the unique identity, culture and faith of the people of the north east. He also said the region suffered as a consequence of the BJP abolishing the Special Industrial Policy, Special Category Status and Planning Commission. The AICC general secretary said the biggest threat to the region was the BJP’s decision to

EC seeks report on Adityanath’s ‘Modi ji ki sena’ remarks NEW DELHI, APR 1 (PTI): Election Commission Monday took cognizance of Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s reported remarks referring to the Indian Army as ‘Modi ji ki sena’ and sought a report from Ghaziabad district administration. Ghaziabad district magistrate has been asked to furnish a report which would be submitted to the office of chief electoral officer, which has sought the details taking cognizance of media reports, EC sources said, adding commission will examine the remarks to ascertain whether model code of conduct has been violated. The decision to seek the report came days after poll panel urged political parties to “desist” from indulging in any propaganda involving actions taken by defence forces during Lok Sabha poll campaign. Yogi’s remark created a political firestorm on Monday with the opposition leaders attacking the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for “insulting and humiliating” the force. Apart from angry reactions from opposition leaders, Yogi’s remarks are also not gone down well with the military with sources indicating that it was “upset”.

legislate the Citizenship Amendment Bill which would destroy indigenous people. Faleiro said when North East Students including Naga Students Union, NGOs and social organisations met Rahul Gandhi in Delhi over the CAB issue, he (Rahul) assured them that the Congress opposed the Act in the Rajya Sabha and eventually it was not tabled. He however warned that the CAB issue was not over even though BJP had to scuttle the proposal in the Rajya Sabha since the BJP president Amit Shah had promised to table it again once the party returned to power. Faleiro said the CAB is an example of how BJP was trying to destroy the unique identity of the north east. On the NDPP’s belated opposition to CAB, Faleiro said the

ruling party shed crocodile tears but is part and parcel of NDA and NEDA and did not oppose it in the Lok Sabha. He said the people should condemn the NDPP for its act of betrayal of the state, its people and those who voted for the party. Faleiro also hit out at Neiphiu Rio and the NDPP for refusing to acknowledge the BJP’s agenda by continuing to be with NDA where the BJP and RSS were dictating and setting the agenda through communal divide and hatred against secularism. Faleiro said he only hoped and prayed that wiser counsel prevailed among people to realise the great danger posed by NDPP in supporting the NDA and the latter’s agenda. He said those who support NDA cannot be representative of Nagaland and read out a passage from the

Bible that warned against “false prophets”. Faleiro also said that despite ideological differences with Congress, the NPF understood the reality and has decided to save the country by ensuring to protest secularism and to see that Nagaland marched ahead towards progress and prosperity. He also assured that if Congress wins the Lok Sabha, it will support NPF to ensure that the Naga political problem was solved. He also expressed optimism that against the winds of change blowing across India, the people were for secular forces and against BJP. If Congress was voted back to power, Faleiro said it will bring back all special assistance for the north east which were withdrawn by the NDA. He also appealed to people in Nagaland to attend Rahul Gandhi’s public meeting and support Congress candidate K.L. Chishi for the Lok Sabha poll and Alemjongshi in the by-poll for the 26 Aonglenden constituency. Faleiro appealed to voters in Nagaland that money for buying votes came from ill gotten sources and that it was not only unethical but also unconstitutional and illegal and should be stopped.

7 dissident NPF MLAs will not go unpunished, says Dr. Shürhozelie Correspondent

KOHIMA, APR 1 (NPN): NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu has made it clear that the seven MLAs who had recently announced open support to PDA would have to face punishment once the party’s disciplinary action committee (DAC) gave its recommendation. The seven NPF MLAs, who had openly declared support to PDA consensus candidate, replied on Monday to the show-cause notices served on them. The replies have reportedly the same content with their signatures. Speaking to Nagaland Post at his official residence here, Dr. Liezietsu said he was informed about the replies filed by the MLAs to the show-cause notices served on them by justifying their earlier stand. He, however, said there was no such rule in the party. Upon the recommendation of DAC, he said action would be initiated against the erring legislators, adding that their move was out of the way. He said that the reason cited by the MLAs – NPF not putting up a candidate – for their decision was just an excuse, alleging that they had (Cont’d on p-11) done it purely for money. Hav-

ing a constitution, he said the party always tried to follow it strictly as far as possible. On the merger of NPF candidate Toshipokba for byelection to 26 Aonglenden Assembly constituency, Dr. Liezietsu alleged that money had played a key role. He also expressed regret that Dr. Watizulu had to give up his candidature for Toshipokba. According to the NPF president, Toshipokba even refused to be a standby candidate during the nomination process when the name of Dr Watizulu was suggested. He added that his party was not aware if it was pre-planned. Mentioning that he was not new to such a situation, he also asserted that he was not worried, adding that keeping such people in the party only created problems.

We recognise only Z Royim as NNC president: NNPGs WC DIMAPUR, APR 1 (NPN): Working Committee (WC) of NNPGs has clarified that it only recognised Z Royim Yimchungru as legitimate president of NNC (parent body) and the group led by him and those under him. In a statement, the committee said it was appalled at the manner in which few former NNC (parent body) members were appointing themselves as president or general secretary, after having been expelled from the organisation few days earlier. According to the statement, V Nagi, then general secretary and co-convener of WC, was recalled from representing the group in peace talks in early 2018 owing to his “irrational and destructive behaviour” and subsequently, as per the Central Executive Council

Evidence of pre-modern iron technology found in Nagaland NEW DELHI, APR 1 (AGENCIES): The development of technology for extracting metals from ores has been critical in the growth of various civilizations. In one such initiative, scientists from Nagaland University and the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati have studied the history and evolution of smelting in Wui village of Tuensang district of Nagaland, a report by Rayies Altaf of the India Science Wire stated. The village is well known for its traditional art of iron-smelting and iron tool production since pre-colonial times. In the medieval times, spears forged from Wui were highly valued. Iron smelting was once the primary source of livelihood for Wui people. Smelting of Wui community was of exceptional quality and kings from even far off places such as Myanmar would get their

weaponry specially made from Wui. The current scenario is, however, grim. Iron smelting is a dying art and people of Wui are struggling to preserve their traditional knowledge. The researchers studied various chemical properties and compositions, quality and quantity of mineral iron content and other oxides to grasp the use of early iron technology in Nagaland. It emerged that iron ore used for smelting in early days

was primary mined from this region. Thus it was, perhaps, a major source of iron-ore in Nagaland. The researchers excavated two trenches at two different localities of the village. This was done on the assumption that the people from this area may have been engaged in ironsmelting for generations and, therefore, there was a high probability for extracting slag refuse from the deep layers of the trenches. This

would be vital for understanding early metallurgical practice. The first trench revealed a four metre thick cultural deposit, revealing six layers. The excavation yielded cork-mark potteries, animal bones, glass beads, slag and good quality charcoal. The second trench too revealed a thick habitation deposit. Evidence from this trench included plain and cork-mark potteries, perforated roof tiles of slates, glass beads and charcoal. Charcoal from both trenches was carbon dated and their age ranged from 800-753 BCE to 9801053 AD. An analysis of microstructure iron slag and ore samples was done using X-ray diffraction. Hardness test was also done to understand microstructures in terms of its strength and hardness. Electrical furnace test was done on the iron

Regarding NPF not putting up a candidate in the ensuing Lok Sabha election, Dr. Liezietsu said initially the party had thought of putting up an Independent candidate or a Church leader preferably from Eastern area as a consensus candidate. But, as Congress had hurriedly put up its candidate, he said the idea was dropped. And having felt that secular forces must come together to jointly take up issues, he explained that NPF had extended its support to Congress and reiterated that this was a “one-time affair”. On NPF MLAs in Manipur continuing to extend support to the ruling coalition led by BJP, Dr. Liezietsu clarified that it was being done to avoid creating any such situation that could derail the ongoing Naga peace process. Otherwise, there was no point of supporting the government in Manipur when the party had severed ties with BJP in Nagaland, he added. Meanwhile, when contacted, the seven MLAs who had declared open support to PDA government informed Nagaland Post that they had not left the party, but merely announced extending support to the PDA’s consensus candidate.

ore sample to examine the chemical variations. All these tests provided detailed account of the presence of different mineral compositions. Tiatemjen Tzudir, one of the co-authors of the study, said, “this research is part of an ongoing study and we are looking for further evidence for smelting and iron smithing for better understanding of technological and social processes involved in pre-modern iron production in Wui and other sites in Nagaland. It is among the first such research initiatives aimed at understanding the metal craft history of Wui community.” The research team included Tiatemjen Tzudir and Tiatoshi Jamir (Nagaland University) and Sukanya Sharma (IIT-Guwahati). The study results have been published in journal Current Science.

decision, he was replaced and NNC president endorsed Toshi Walling to represent the group as co -convener in the ongoing political talks. Mentioning that it was a critical period in the political struggle of the Nagas, WD pointed out that appointing or elevating oneself as president or general secretary of NNC (parent body) would be an object of ridicule and have no basis as legitimate leaders were representing the group in the negotiating table. WC further cautioned the terminated NNC members against publishing irresponsible statements at a time when NNPGs and Government of India were seriously engaged in negotiations to take the Indo-Naga political issue to a logical conclusion.

VVPAT: SC asks Oppn to reply to affidavit within a week Ind candidate for

NEW DELHI, APR 1 (PTI): Supreme Court on Monday asked 21 opposition leaders to file within a week their reply on the Election Commission’s affidavit on their plea seeking counting of at least 50 per cent of VVPAT slips in Lok Sabha and assembly polls. In its affidavit EC has said that any further increase in the sample size of verification from the existing norm of one polling booth per assembly segment would lead to very negligible gain in the confidence level, which is way above 99.99%. It has said that 50 per cent VVPAT slip verification as sought by opposition leaders in each assembly segment of a Parliamentary or Assembly Constituency on an average shall enlarge the time required for counting to about six days.
