DIMAPUR, APR 27 (NPN): Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya, has urged the banks operating in Nagaland to open up new bank branches in strategic rural areas to enable people of the area to avail banking facilities and for implementation of Central and State Flagship Welfare Programmes. According to Raj Bhavan PRO, the governor, in a letter to five banks including Nagaland Rural Bank, NSCB Ltd, UCO Bank Central Bank of India and United Bank of India, said he had met with bank officers and urged them to open new branches in all districts. “People in rural areas are unaware of the banking facilities and schemes provided by the Government through banks,” Acharya added. It may be mentioned that the governor had a meeting with twenty bank representatives on February 9, 2018 at Raj Bhavan. However, only those five banks have so far taken up the governor’s proposal with their head offices to open branches in other districts of Nagaland.

DIMAPUR, APR 27 (NPN): Nagaland Geo-Scientist Association (NGA) has sought clarification from the state government on the confusion between the department of geology and mining (G&M) and the department of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (EF&CC) over the implementation of the Nagaland Minor Mineral Concession Rules (NMMCR), 2004. In a representation to the state chief secretary, the NGA vice president, Kheto Zhimomi, and secretary, Khikiya Kath, also requested the government to clarify on constitution of a new review committee dated April 17, 2018 under the chairmanship of the principal secretary, EF&CC. NGA pointed out that a high level review committee under the chairmanship of development commissioner involving the departments of G&M, works and housing, irrigation & flood control, home and EF&CC was constituted to review the implementation of NMMCR 2004 vide No. GM-5/ EXPL-15/2001(Pt) dated July 16, 2016.

KOHIMA, APR 27 (NPN): Consequent upon the announcement of bye-election to Nagaland’s lone parliamentary constituency, the model code of conduct has come into effect and will remain in force till completion of the by-election process. Addressing media persons at DC conference hall here on Friday afternoon, chief electoral officer (CEO) Abhijit Sinha said the model code of conduct will be applicable to all candidates and political parties, besides the Central and State governments. He said while the gazette notification will be issued on May 3, the last date for filing nominations is May 10, scrutiny is on May 11, last day for withdrawal of nomination is May 14, polling is on May 28, counting on May 31 and the entire election process will be completed by June 2. Sinha said the total number of electorate stands at 11,97,438, with 60,75,89 of them being male and the remaining 5,89,849 female voters. He added that 2,196 polling stations will be set up in the State for the by-election, of which 474 will be in urban areas and 1,722 in (Cont’d on p-5) rural areas.

Imna requests Oram to release pending scholarship DIMAPUR, APR 27 (NPN): Nagaland minister for Higher & Technical Education, Temjen Imna Along, who called on union minister for Tribal Affairs, Jual Oram, in New Delhi, requested the union Tribal and his secretary to release the pending backlog for post-matric scholarship, an amount of Rs. 7,71,73,310 for the year 2016 and also to release the balance amount for the year 2017-18. According to Nagaland House Delhi PRO, the minister also discussed various issues regarding education of tribal students of the state. At the meeting, in reply to their request, secretary tribal affairs, Leena Nair, assured that she would look into the matter at the earliest.

Rumours of blast in Dimapur triggers panic Staff Reporter

DIMAPUR, APR 27 (NPN): Following the NEPEx mock drill on April 26, a rumour started circulating widely on social media of a bomb blast in Midland area, Dimapur. The rumour was accompanied by a video taken at Citykart, Dhobinala in Dimapur, which shows rescue workers strapping an injured victim to a stretcher while other victims nearby sit feigning a state of trauma. The video was taken during the Dimapur NEPEx mock drill and was not a real life situation. The video created lot of confusion among the people some frantically calling family and friends in Dimapur from other districts concerned about their safety. K Y M C
