Staff Reporter
DIMAPUR, JAN 27 (NPN): A Regional Centre for Sports Excellence (RCSE) having a campus area of 21.3 acre at Sovima was formally inaugurated by Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio Thursday. The RCSE somewhat like a games village includes the Regional Motor Sports Centre (RMSC), Regional Archery Academy (RAA), Regional Shooting Centre (RSC) and Futsal Complex (FC) and also the Nagaland Cricket Stadium. Speaking on the occasion, the chief minister spoke about the negative impact of prolonged period of insurgency and divisions within society which had acted as hurdles against potential of the youth in various fields. The Youth’ in 2003-04 with the objective of promoting sports, music and arts. While saying that it has taken decades before RCSE to come up, Rio urged the youth not to take sports merely as a hobby but to embrace it with a passion as a professional career. Rio reminded that anyone desiring to excel in games and sports needs to remain healthy, be physically fit and emotionally sound. He also pointed out the professionalism demanded
discipline, commitment and determination. He said though Nagaland became a state in 1963, the Nagaland Olympic Association was able to get affiliated to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) only 41 years later (2004). He encouraged sportspersons to train hard to win medals in view of the state wanting to host regional and national events. Rio said if the host State failed to win medals, it would be a matter of huge shame.
Padma Shree, Arjuna Awardee and former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia, who was guest of honour, emphasised that the government has to invest on youths and added that such a multi-sports campus was indeed the best investment. He said Nagaland has a rich legacy in sports, especially in football by citing the example of Dr T Ao, the first captain of independent India’s first football team. Bhutia also said as the
entire country recognised the North-east region as a sporting hub, the youth needed to change their attitude towards sports. He said it was not only about earning money and living big, but also about living healthy. Taking the examples of football legends like Messi, Pele, Ronaldo, etc, Bhutia pointed out that all of them emerged from South America where sport infrastructure was very poor. He said these legends were able to rise because there was a culture and environment for sports in their native land and therefore, called for changing the mindset on sports. Delivering a shor t speech, director general of police and Nagaland Shooting Sports Association president TJ Longkumer said the Nagaland Police was happy to be a partner in the development of youth through sports. He informed the gathering that the chief minister had approved establishment of a police station at Sovima village, adding details were being worked out. (Cont’d on p-8)

NE rebels now brothers in arms with Myanmar military: report YA N G O N, J A N 2 7 (AGENCIES): If anything, the ongoing civil war in Myanmar triggered by the February 1 coup last year has exposed the vulnerabilities of the junta forces. Despite superior firepower and troop strength, the Myanmar military is facing a stiff challenge from the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) across most of the country, as well as from the ethnic armed organizations (EAO) in the various ethnic regions, reports The Irrawaddy. The PDFs, which comprise hundreds of civilian resistance groups, are the armed wing of the parallel National Unity Government, formed to challenge the military regime’s legitimacy. Branded as terrorist groups by the junta, the PDFs have launched numerous hit-and-run attacks on junta forces, besides bombing military targets and killing regime-appointed officials and collaborators. In addition, EAOs such as the Kachin Independence Army, Karenni Army and Chin National Army frequently attack regime forces. Hell-bent on tackling the PDFs, the Myanmar military is now mobilizing North East India’s separatist insurgents as a force multiplier. The move comes after the junta apparently reached an understanding with a few rebel outfits from the northeast Indian state of Manipur who operate inside Myanmar, according to people familiar with the development. India shares a porous, 1,643km long border with Myanmar. Cross-border insurgencies have remained a major security threat to India’s northeast region for several decades. The rugged terrain makes it easy for the rebels to slip back and forth between their camps and

ment takeover. Both the government and Tatas made separate announcements of completion of the transaction—the first privatisation in nearly two decades that will put an end to thousands of crores of taxpayers’ money being provided over the years to keep the airline afloat.
For Tatas, Air India will be the third airline. It already operates Vistara in joint venture with Singapore Airlines and AirAsia India in partnership with AirAsia Group. The finance ministry in a statement said Air India strategic disinvestment transaction has been completed
with the government receiving Rs 2,700 crore from Talace Pvt Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Sons. Tatas took over Rs 15,300 crore of debt in Air India and Air India Express Ltd while the remaining Rs 46,262 crore loan plus an outstanding of about Rs 15,000 crore towards unpaid fuel bills were paid off by the government. “It is indeed noteworthy that the disinvestment process of @airindiain has been brought to a successful conclusion in a time-bound manner,” Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia tweeted. That proves
government’s ability and “the resolve to carry out disinvestment effectively in non-strategic sectors in the future.” Air India will give Tatas immediate access to valuable flying rights and landing slots and it will also gain control of low-cost, short-haul international carrier Air India Express as well as a 50 per cent stake in a ground handling company with SATS Ltd. Tatas cannot retrench any employee for at least a year, according to the terms of the deal. Air India’s regional arm, Alliance Air, is not part of the deal.

ambush sites on the Indian side of the frontier. It is believed that the Myanmar military has made an informal pact with at least two Manipur-based insurgent outfits, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) recently. While the PLA has been fighting for secession from India since the 1970s, KYKL is a relatively newer outfit, founded in the 1990s. As part of the quid pro quo arrangement, these groups will assist junta forces in their operations against PDFs in the so-called ‘liberated zones’ such as Chin State and Sagaing Region. Sources said a section of Manipuri insurgents had moved to Chin State long back. Incidentally, there were media reports claiming that India’s special forces launched a surprise attack on a PLA camp in Senam Village in Chin State on January 13, in which two PLA militants and one Indian soldier were killed. While the Indian Army rejected these reports, saying no such incident took place, the rebel group as well as local sources provided details of the alleged operation. Nevertheless, the re-
government would not like to divide single tribe districts in keeping with the state government’s motto of unity. In a press release, secretary Sangti Konyak said that district demand was, however, based on genuine needs of Tobu and Moka, which could be fulfilled only if the present ADC Tobu post was upgraded to district headquarters. TDDC said that all the relevant documents and profile of Tobu district demand endorsed with signature of village councils and other
stakeholders of Tobu and Moka had been submitted to the state government. The committee expressed hope that decades-old aspiration and prayer would soon be achieved under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio. The committee stated that Tobu headquarters established in 1954 was the oldest administrative sub-division in Mon district. It also pointed out that Tobu sub-division shared a stretch of around 30km of international border line with Myanmar. (Cont’d on p-8)
NEW DELHI, JAN 27 (AGENCIES): Conditional market authorisation was granted on Thursday by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to COVID-19 vaccines Covishield and Covaxin for use in adults. However, this doesn’t mean the two COVID-19 vaccines will be available at shops soon though people would be able to buy them from hospitals and clinics, sources have said. Key details are awaited from the government, they said. For emergency use, safety data has to be given
Aboi distt demand: ADDC to continue bandh Aboi District Demand Committee (ADDC) Thursday affirmed to continue to the ongoing indefinite bandh until the state government reconsidered its statement and declared Aboi as the 17th district of Nagaland. District demand not to tarnish govt’s ‘unity’ motto: TDDC
DIMAPUR, JAN 27 (NPN): Tobu District Demand Committee (TDDC) Thursday said that Tobu and Moka public’s demand for district was not “an ambitious demand with ulterior motives against any community/society or to tarnish the image of Government motto ‘Unity’ in any manner. State chief minister Neiphiu Rio, in his 73rd Republic Day speech, maintained that though there were demands for creation of new districts, the state
ports about the Myanmar military’s secret pact with Manipuri rebels has raised concerns in the Indian capital of New Delhi, according to The Indian Express newspaper. Although the Indian government has not made any official comment on the matter, it wants to send out a message that it cannot be business as usual until democracy is restored to Myanmar. India’s frustration is understandable given that Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla visited Myanmar only last month, during which “both sides reiterated their commitment to ensure that their respective territories would not be allowed to be used for any activities inimical to the other”, as India’s foreign ministry said in a statement. However, this is not the first time that the Myanmar military has reached an understanding with North East India’s insurgents. The Manipuri PLA, for instance, is believed to have maintained some ties with the Myanmar military for a long time, which facilitated their expansion, training camps and investment in different parts of the country.
The committee said that Aboi public were ready to tolerate though their normal life had been paralyzed by indefinite bandh. ADDC asserted that Aboi district demand was initiated way back in 2008 during the leadership of the present chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, who it said was well aware of the issue. However, it alleged that “his attitude and statement towards the vast population of Konyak is baseless and illogical.” (Cont’d on p-8)
the DCGI within 15 days but for market approval the data has to be given to the regulator within six months. The market sale of the two vaccines was approved under the New Drugs and Clinical Trials Rules, 2019. Covaxin maker Bharat Biotech and Covishield maker Serum Institute of India, or SII, had given data of ongoing clinical trials to the regulator, which approved the market sale after a subject expert committee on COVID-19 on January 19 recommended approval.
