About the Camp, YLC

About the NAD

The purpose of the NAD Youth Leadership Camp is to encourage outstanding young Deaf student leaders from diverse educational programs to develop a greater purpose in life through programs of learning, social interaction, and leadership development. The camp program will provide students with opportunities for learning through active involvement.

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is the nation's premier civil rights organization of, by and for deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America.

The ultimate goal of NAD YLC is to help individual students develop initiative and a greater sense of direction. Emphasis is placed on strategies whereby students can make more effective use of their own skills and available resources to tackle the challenge of becoming productive citizens in their communities. Flexibility within the camp program allows for variance in day-to-day content and activities, depending on guest speakers, instructors, and/ or staff members. Leaders help produce the camp newspaper, titled, ―The Daily Drum (which has been in existence since the first camp session in 1969!); hold Camp Council Meetings, and experience team-building activities.

Established in 1880, the NAD was shaped by deaf leaders who believed in the right of the American deaf community to use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and to have its interests represented at the national level. These beliefs remain true to this day, with American Sign Language as a core value. The advocacy scope of the NAD is broad, covering a lifetime and impacting future generations in the areas of early intervention, education, employment, health care, technology, telecommunications, youth leadership, and more – improving the lives of millions of deaf and hard of hearing Americans. The NAD also carries out its federal advocacy work through coalition efforts with specialized national deaf and hard of hearing organizations, as well as coalitions representing national crossdisability organizations. On the international front, the NAD represents the United States of America to the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), an international human rights organization. Individual and organizational membership makes it possible for the NAD to ensure that the collective interests of the American deaf and hard of community are seen and represented among our nation’s policy makers and opinion leaders at the federal level. The NAD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supported by the generosity of individual and organizational donors, including corporations and foundations.

Allie Rice, NAD Youth Programs Coordinator Hail to the 2015 National Association of the Deaf Youth Leadership Camp (NAD YLC)! Endless Ripples. You will be making endless ripples. Yes, it is all about YOU. Deaf and hard of hearing leaders across the nation credit their success to their involvement in NAD YLC. The future of the American deaf and hard of hearing community rests with leaders like you, bringing out the importance of personal achievement, community involvement, and leadership development. You have been chosen to participate in this legendary camp because you have demonstrated your ambitions to develop a greater purpose in life, share personal anecdotes, and become a proactive and contributing citizen. You will learn a wide variety of lessons, from one perspective to another. We learn new lessons everyday. As a leader, you will have daily opportunities for dialogue, group collaboration, skill development, and the beginning of new friendships. During your camp session, you will learn three vital areas of development: Scholarship, Leadership, and Citizenship (SLC). As you participate in various activities, you will learn to explore and incorporate SLC. You will, often, find SLC applicable throughout your life, as it has influenced many YLC alumni who have become successful leaders and productive citizens. The NAD YLC administration team and staff will make sure you are warmly welcomed to NAD YLC. They will be with you throughout the camp, providing support and nonstop spirit. Celebrating its 46th annual summer session, we are going to have an amazing session together. It is time to unite, visualize, and inspire current and future leaders from all over the nation. The camp brings you a wealth of knowledge and ideas for your school, community, and future. Come prepared to share your energy, face daily challenges, and make a significant contribution to the YLC program. I am beyond excited to join you and make endless ripples together this summer. Until we meet‌
