Manje sisengxenyeni yesibili yohhafu ka 2022, kuyadabukisa nokho ukuthi alukho ushintsho olujabulisayo ngakwezepolitiki zalelizwe. Uqhekeko olusobala oselube izinhlaka ezintathu eqenjini elibusayo, ukuklolodelana nokuncintisana kwempakamo kuholele ekunganakweni-kwabantu.
The merger of Sika and MBCC has unfortunately been delayed until the first half of 2023. This is due to some competition regulations in many countries, but I am pleased to announce that we have achieved full clearance in SA. Our KL and the board are still extremely positive and anticipate that the delay will not a ect the successful conclusion of this merger. I would like to thank all of you for your positive contribution to our culture, community and growth. It is after all, our people, who keep us great, and ensure that we remain the formidable company we are.
Ukukhwabanisa nenkohlakalo eyenzeka umgangela kulimaze konke ezweni. Izinkampani ezinkulu ziye zakhahlamezeka kakhulu njengoba zingatholi izidingo-ngqangi ngenxa ‘yokuntuleka kwezezimali’.
Now well into the second half of 2022, it is disappointing that there has been no positive change to the political landscape in our country. Three apparent factions have evolved within our ruling party, and their bickering and competition for pride of place leads to neglect of the very purpose for which they exist – our people. Continued unabated fraud and corruption run rampant and continue to diminish the country’s co ers. Large companies such as ours are directly a ected by these political shortcomings, especially so where large infrastructure projects are simply scuttled due to ‘lack of funds’. There is at least some good news for Sika. Despite the challenges – and there have been many – the company has continued to grow both its sales and its profitability. Sika remains focused on innovation, with the launching of new technologies and by increasing our digital platform presence. Most importantly, we have kept our customers close, maintained our professional service to the industry, and still have a broad range of exceptional and relevant Theproducts.Sika group recently launched a brand-new slogan: “Beyond the Expected”. To celebrate this, and to draw awareness to Sika and the slogan, it was decided that all local employees would have their cars branded for one month. I am really excited to see the response we all receive during the month of September.

• Higher ultimate strengths allow for greater engineering design flexibility and structural economies.
SikaPlast®-220 VX is a multi-purpose water reducer and superplasticiser, which can be used in both ready-mix and on-site batching applications; and is ideal for use with lean, harsh concrete mixes, and concrete containing, slag, fly-ash or microsilica. The superplasticising action of SikaPlast®-220 VX provides high-slump, flowing concrete that maintains excellent workability and may be placed with minimal vibration. It has been formulated to provide controlled and predictable extended slump life, allowing good slump retention without significant loss in early strength development. The combined high range water reduction and superplasticising action of SikaPlast®-220 VX provides the following benefits in hardened concrete:
6 SIKA BEAT - Issue #62 AUGUST 2022 SIKA PROJECT
• Improve the ability to heal cracks in concrete.
• Reduced water penetration under pressure.
• Reduced water cement ratios produce more durable, dense concrete with reduced permeability.
• Reduced water absorption. Despite the rain delays, the project was successful and the new wastewater plant now has four times the processing power of its predecessor. Sika SA were there to make sure no resources went to waste – except of course, that which was meant to!
Sika SA were consulted, asked to consider solutions, and then supplied the relevant specified materials to the project. It was important to ensure that concrete works and joints be totally watertight. The basic methodology initially required the installation and fastening of Sika Waterbar® DR EG, an expansion joint sealant for watertight concrete construction, prior to casting of the concrete. SikaPlast® 220 VX, a water reducing multi-purpose admixture was dosed at the ready-mix supplier, and Sika® WT-200 P, a waterproofing admixture, was then added to the load just prior to discharge, and thoroughly mixed. The Sika Waterbar® DR EG range are made from thermoplastic PVC and can therefore be easily heat welded - as adhesive jointing is not permitted. Further advantages include high tensile strength & elongation, permanent flexibility, resistance to hydrostatic pressure/stress, and a resistance to natural soil and groundwater mediums. It is also available in a range of di erent sizes to suit di erent structures and applications. The selection of a suitable Sika Waterbar® is governed by the type of joint, the concrete thickness, grade of concrete, reinforcement position, expected movement (expansion/shear) as well as the waterhead to which it is to be exposed to. The correct consistency of the concrete itself is also important, and the aggregates must be well graded. The Sika Waterbar® solution performs only if both sides are well embedded in the concrete, is centrally placed and heat welded. Sika provided all the information and conducted training in the use of its products.
• It does not initiate or promote the corrosion of steel present in the concrete. Sika® WT-200 P is a combined water resisting and crystalline waterproofing admixture used to reduce the permeability of concrete and to enhance the self-healing abilities of the concrete. The active mixture of cements, amino alcohols and fillers will form non-soluble materials and seal the concrete permanently against penetration of water and other liquids. In addition, the special Sika formula of ingredients in Sika® WT200 P will provide the following benefits:
• Higher early compressive strengths for earlier removal of forms and structural use of concrete.
Orania, a Karoo town in the Northern Cape, named after the Orange River flowing alongside, has experienced rapid population growth in the last few decades. Consequently, the wastewater plant did not have adequate capacity to cope and a new one had to be built. The appointed contractors were Orania Infrastruktuur and they conducted the project from March through to mid-December of 2021.

WINERYCONSTANTIAKLEINfloor.
The project required the identification and rehabilitation of old and damaged flooring at the winery. The bad substrates were removed and reprofiled with SikaCem®-810, a one-component modified SBR polymer additive, that is mixed in with the floor screed, to correctly shape the way the floor falls. Once complete, it was left to cure for 21 days, to acquire the strength needed to apply Sikafloor®-20 PurCem® Sikafloor®-20 Purcem® is a hybrid flooring screed that is ideal for the winery environment. It can withstand high impact, is slip resistant and allows for steam cleaning. But first, the floors were prepared with a light grind and then termination slots were cut into them. These slots facilitate the holding and gripping of the new floor, thus increasing its lifespan. Thereafter, the specialist applicator used a hand trowel to apply the Sikafloor®-20 PurCem® at a 6mm thickness, which was then left to cure for 5 to 7 days. This latter product is a hybrid flooring screed, which with its high impact resistance, non-slip, and steam-cleanable surface, is an ideal solution for the winery environment.

The perfect location for cool climate wines, Klein Constantia produces some of South Africa’s top wines, including one of the world’s best natural sweet wines Vin de Constance.
Being a world class winery, it is important that Klein Constantia Winery maintains its optimum conditions throughout the year, to live up to its global standards. The winery floor required a rehabilitation and for this task Sika’s world-class products were specified. Desmond Van Vuuren from CCRS was the main contractor on site and Ian Wilkinson from Apex Construction Consultants was the onsite Project Manager.
The completed project met the first-class standards of the top-class winery. The ‘bunch’ at Sika ensured that its quality service and products, left no sour grapes on the

Sutherland SALT Telescope
A final 2mm thick layer of Sikafloor®-263 SL epoxy floor screed was then applied. This self-smoothing epoxy solution is for concrete and cement screed with medium to heavy tra c. It is highly durable and applied by a Sika approved specialist applicator. After curing, the existing floor joints were cut, reemed and then primed with Sika® Primer-3 N. This is a solvent-based primer designed for use prior to other Sika products, on porous substrates, such as concrete. It is also easy to apply, has a short flash-o time and is water repellent.
The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) is the largest single optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. It is situated at the South African Astronomical Observatory (SAAO) field station, near Sutherland in the Northern Cape province. Funded by a consortium of local and international partners, SALT has been in full scientific operation since 2011 – Africa’s giant eye in the sky. Even as SALT scientists look up, what lies below their feet is as important. The SAAO needed a complete floor refurbishment in their 120m 2 instrument room and appointed Eyethu Alpha as the main contractors. Botwei Projects, Sika approved applicators, were then appointed by Eyethu Alpha as specialist contractors for the Sikafloor® Thesystems.refurbishment process started with the floor preparation which was done using the cup grinding method. This exposed the problem areas of the floor, which determined the repair process and product requirements. All cracks in the floor were exposed and cleaned, and thereafter, gravity fed with Sikadur®-52 ZA epoxy resin. Used to fill and seal voids and cracks in structures such as bridges and other civil engineering buildings, Sikadur®-52 ZA is a two-part, low viscosity, multi-purpose epoxy resin, which has excellent penetration and high bond strength. Following a good cleaning and a wipe with an oil free solvent, the floors were then primed using Sikafloor®-161 Thereafter, an inspection was conducted to locate any pinholes, which were subsequently closed with Sikadur®-31 DW epoxy. This is a 2-part epoxy-based moisture tolerant structural adhesive which bonds most construction materials, has high mechanical strengths, and can also be used for minor concrete repairs, joint filling and crack sealing. It has been specially formulated to meet the requirements for use in contact with drinking water.
The joints were then sealed using Sikaflex® PRO-3, a highperformance polyurethane sealant designed for floor joints and various other civil engineering applications. It is a single component, moisture-curing, elastic sealant with high mechanical and chemical resistance. It cures without bubbles and is solvent-free.
8 SIKA BEAT - Issue #62 AUGUST 2022 SIKA PROJECT
Eyethu Alpha and Botwei Projects successfully refurbished the floor, and the project was completed in December 2021. Together with Sika products, these contractors reached for the stars to provide a result that was simply a beautiful floor, but out of this world.

On new builds, it can be applied instead of torch-on membranes, but more importantly, it can be applied over existing torch-on membranes, as was the case on this balcony.
The preparation of the balcony prior to applying the Sikalastic®-560 was a unique case, given that the customer had fashioned a golf putting green on it. The appointed recommended contractor, Westside Trading, first had to remove the green felt, plastic sheet and small stones from the balcony surface, before the existing torchon membrane could be swept clean. Sikalastic®-560 is a self-primer so it was applied without the need for any other priming product, and only in more complex areas, such as wall and floor meeting points and upstands, was Sikalastic®-120 Fleece membrane applied to ensure a perfect sealed seamless system. Two coats of Sikalastic®-560 were enough to get the job done. While the view remains the same - the peace of mind whilst looking at it will be watertight. In our view, Sikalastic®-560 is a waterproofing hole-in-one!
9 PANORAMA,
Having recently completed our “Waterproofing Specialists for Over 110 Years” roadshow - where Sikalastic®-560 was one of the products that took centre-stage - Sika’s area sales manager, Erica van Heerden, did not hesitate to recommend it as the perfect solution to go over existing waterproofing systems.
A Cape Town residential customer enjoyed a 180° panoramic view from Blouwberg to Gordon’s Bay, but this was dampened by a water problem. Water was leaking through the sides and centre of his 150m2 balcony floor with existing torch-on membrane system and was causing issues in the ceiling of the apartment below.
Sikalastic®-560 is a cold-applied, one-component waterproofing liquid membrane for both new construction and refurbishment projects. Along with its UV resistant and UV stable qualities, it is also highly elastic so creates a seamless waterproofing membrane.

Sika South Africa, Celebrates Mandela Day with Bridges Of Hope. In honour of Mandela Day, Sika South Africa made donations to Bridges Of Hope The Bridges Of Hope for Children was born out of the need to stand in the gap for children in crisis, specifically those with special needs. We donated a multitude of items that include: medical supplies, groceries, clothes, toys and toiletries.
PRODUCT DONATION to Community High School
The committee started o with a cleaning project, focused on the girl’s bathroom that had leaking, blocked and broken toilets as well as leaking roofs that were so bad that it caused short circuits in the power supply.
12 SIKA BEAT - Issue #62 AUGUST 2022 SIKA HAPPENINGS MANDELA DAY
A donation was handed over to the FOREST HEIGHT S HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI committee of the Forest Heights High School in Eerste River, Cape Town. This committee was established earlier this year when some of the members identified some concerning issues at the school, and decided that they wanted to make a di erence at the school and in the community.
Sika, as the well-known waterproofing specialists in the area, were approached and were able to assist in donating silicones and waterproofing products to help the school and community improve the lives of the scholars, as this is where they spend most of their time during the week. All learners deserve proper sanitation and comfortable teaching facilities.

Located at Briardene, Sika purchased 50% of RFK and introduced Sika Primer as the first Sika product to the South African market. Sika recognised that I was a fast learner and gave me the opportunity to grasp knowledge in the area of stock control, learning from the late Cookie Naidoo. Just before 2000, Sika purchased 100% of RFK where we then moved from Briardene to the new premises in Westmead. At that point I was promoted to the position of Stock Control Clerk, which I remained in for 2 years. The MD at the time, Niall Wylde, and the late Paul Gumede, promoted me once again, to Production Co-Ordinator, taking over the position from Caron Adkins. It is a position I am still currently enjoying. Lastly, I would like to thank all the people mentioned above who played a big role in my life at Sika, and those still playing a part right now. Sika is a company that cannot be compared to any other companies that I know of. Sika is the company that you can rely on. There is no better home than Sika.’
‘When it comes to money, every penny matters. Attaining financial wellness gives a sense of financial security and freedom.
