The Mediatheque and Cultural Archive of Peru: A Reinterpretation of Architecture in Dialogue with the Past

and the Future

Architecture is not merely a collection of walls, columns, and roofs; it is a profound cultural expression that reflects the context in which it is embedded. The design of the GranMediatheque and Cultural Archive of Peru is grounded in this understanding, using the Ex Hotel Universo as its foundational point—an iconic building with historical significance. This architectural proposal goes beyond a simple rehabilitation of a structure; it explores a respectful reinterpretation, fostering a dialogue between the existing heritage and contemporary influences, between local culture and foreign architectural approaches. In this instance, the British architectural philosophy of David Chipperfield inspires an intervention that respects historical proportions while introducing innovative elements tailored to the needs of a cultural space in Peru.

Inspiration and Adaptation of the Proposal

The selection of the Ex Hotel Universo as the starting point for this project is not incidental. This building has played a key role in the architectural history of Lima’s historic center. The Mediatheque does not aim to strip the building of its original identity but instead seeks to reinterpret and adapt it to a contemporary context that enables citizens to connect with culture in a renewed way. To achieve this, the proposal begins with a profound reflection on the urban environment and its interaction with the pre-existing space.

The primary inspiration for this intervention stems from David Chipperfield’s architectural approach, which emphasizes a respectful combination of contemporary elements with existing built environments. In the case of the Mediateca, this translates into a design that merges the historical structure of the Ex Hotel Universo with modern layers that allow for greater flexibility of use, always respecting the building’s original structural order and proportions. Throughout this process, the reinterpretation is mindful of the tensions and opportunities that arise between the past and the future, seeking a harmonious balance that enhances both the functionality and aestheti cs of the place.

Selected Materials: A Dialogue Between the Past and Modernity

The use of materials in the proposal plays a central role in the process of reinterpreting the building. Two key materials are incorporated: concrete and wood. These materials are strategically employed to establish visual and spatial continuity with the pre-existence while simultaneously reinforcing the modernity of the new intervention.

Concrete, chosen for its durability and ability to be molded into various forms, is primarily used in the façade and the building’s base. Its color and texture evoke the traditional stone used in colonial architecture, nodding to the historical context of the site. The concrete is presented in a subtle and elegant manner, not to compete with the original building, but to form a layer that enriches the dialogue between the old and the new. By employing this material in the façades and entrances, the proportions of the original building are reinforced, maintaining its scale and presence in Lima’s urban landscape.

Wood, on the other hand, is introduced as a modern yet warm material that highlights the new architecture proposed for the upper levels of the building. The wooden structure not only provides a visual contrast to the solidity of concrete but also introduces a dimension of flexibility and lightness, enabling the creation of open and fluid interior spaces. This combination of materials seeks not only durability and functionality but also a sensitive approach to local architectu ral traditions and the building’s historical narrative.

Cultural Relevance and the Functionality of the Space

The Gran Mediatheque and Cultural Archive of Peru is not just a physical space; it is a place for cultural interaction, learning, and memory. Therefore, the architecture of this building must accommodate a variety of cultural programs flexibly, allowing them to adapt to the changing needs of Peruvian society. Flexibility becomes one of the primary design principles, achieved through the building’s structure, which does not impose limitations on the use of spaces but rather facilitates their transformation.

The floor plan design follows a vision of free movement, meaning that the space flows and adapts without restrictions. The building’s structure is conceived as a framework that organizes the program flexibly, allowing for the inclusion of multifunctional spaces. Public areas, such as the convention hall and the main plaza, connect seamlessly with the urban environment, making the Mediatheque a permeable and acces sible space for the community.

On the upper levels, the project includes exhibition spaces and cultural workshops that can be tailored to the demands of artistic programming, while the fourth level houses administrative offices. The arrangement of these spaces, free from architectural barriers that might constrain their use, facilitates a wide range of activities, from exhibitions to debates and outdoor cultural events similar to those held at the Ca sa de la Literatura.

Particularly on the first level, the design opens toward the main plaza, creating a visual extension that links the Mediatheque with the surrounding urban environment. This opening not only allows for the integration of the building with public space but also provides a meeting point for the community, a crucial aspect of any cultural venue. The proposed intervention in the plaza aims to improve circulation and enhance the building’s presence within the historic and urban context of Lima. A double-layered system is proposed, beginning with a base that opens to the cultural plaza, an intermediate level that accommodates the pre-existing structure and aligns with its proportions, and a new upper structure that rests upon a similar double-layer system, incorporating a more modern design while blending with a virtual framework framed by a structure of the same proportions.

Rehabilitation of the Cultural Sector and Dialogue with the Environment

A key feature of the project is its ability to integrate the building into its urban context without losing the essence of its original architecture. The rehabilitation of the cultural sector is envisioned as a secondary intervention, an extension of the building itself, respectfully inserted into the existing urban fabric. The goal is to enhance the visual stimuli for pedestrians by creating a small public square that serves as an active public space, where existing monuments, such as the Portals of San Agustin, can be fully appreciated. The architectural proposal takes into account the importance of details in the urban perception, creating a space that highlights the surrounding environment while responding to the functional needs of the Mediateca.

An Architecture Project in Dialogue with Time

The Gran Mediatheque and Cultural Archive of Peru is not merely an architectural intervention that respects the past; it also projects itself toward the future. Through a contemporary approach that dialogues with the historical architecture of the Ex Hotel Universo, the project seeks to create a cultural space that is flexible, accessible, and capable of adapting to the needs of Peruvian society. The design proposal, with its layered approach and careful material selection, offers a respectful yet bold reinterpretation that adapts to the Latin American context while embracing the influence of British architecture. As Chipperfield suggests, a game of updated layers is applied that adds to the existing ones and perfectly integrates them into a harmonious whole.
