The project is a mixed use building in which different micro-environments take place so all kinds of people will be attracted. We are especially concerned about the situation of the elderly people in the city, since Lund is mostly a “university city” with many activities for the youth, but not so many for the elderly. We want
to extend the possibility range of this people so they could feel integrated as part of the city life. The different programmes are connected by indefinite complex in-between spaces that create flexible spaces. In our project, we consider essential to give a frame for improvising. Unexpected things will happen and people will take control of the space. Places that can host different programmes and have the ability to be easily changed and shaped to satisfy the necessities the city and its citizens have. A centre for encounter should offer the possibility of entertainment without consuming, because people should be able to have leisure activities and not be charged for it. There’s many examples in which a building can improve the possibilities of the public realm and that offer a variety of activities for the citizens to enjoy. We create this spaces not only in the interior but also next to our buildings, with benches to seat facing south next to the walls that will collect the warmth from the sun. In conclusion, our proposal is a mixed use building which combines flexible spaces (workshops, exhibitions, gallery, concert hall, market, etc.) with places for working or meeting without the necessity of spending money.

The design of our building relies on 3 concepts: The first and more important concept was the sinking of the building, like an iceberg. The aim of this is to create an urban topography that would allow the building to be part of the surrounding park. This also lowers the total height of the building so the result is a building that generates less visual impact and doesn’t compete with its surroundings. The second concept is the image of the building generated above ground. We wanted to shape it so that it would work together with the park and generate a meeting point in the middle of the park and making it inviting for the people to walk by. Thirdly, when thinking about structure, we imagined a series of frames that would sit on top of the concrete shell below ground and would be the structure supporting the roof.
