New Alternatives for Children, Inc. (NAC) was founded on the belief that all children have the right to be nurtured within a safe and permanent family.
NAC’s mission is to provide innovative high quality services in support of birth, foster, and adoptive families caring primarily for medically complex children, which includes children with severe physical disabilities, emotional and behavioral challenges, and developmental disabilities. NAC’s services enable children to remain in or to be returned to their families whenever possible or to be adopted by loving families. Working with children whose birth families live in poverty, NAC’s continuum of services ensures that children’s physical, social, educational, recreational, medical, and mental healthcare needs are met.
By supporting families NAC prevents lengthy stays in foster care, hospitals, or other institutions. NAC builds on family strengths, provides opportunities, and assists all family members in reaching for and achieving their potential.

Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the NAC KIDS CAN Gala.
As we gather for this once-in-a-lifetime event, we celebrate a shared mission: to illuminate the paths of children with special medical needs and their families served by NAC, helping them achieve brighter and better futures. We believe that every child has the potential to thrive, and we’ve witnessed extraordinary transformations when the right support is in place. Together, we have seen children overcome incredible challenges, demonstrating that hope and resilience can lead to success.
Tonight, we are paying a very special tribute to Dr. Arlene Goldsmith, whose compassion and dedication have shaped NAC into a beacon of hope for so many. Her unwavering commitment to our mission inspires us to push boundaries and advocate fiercely for the rights of every child every single day.
It is hard to believe that it was 43 years ago when Arlene set forth to create what has now become a Gold-Standard legacy of innovation and success. She never stopped believing in, or fighting for, the right of every child to grow up in a home and not a hospital, and we are so grateful to know that that legacy of life-changing care and advocacy will propel NAC into the next 43 years and beyond.
We also extend our deepest gratitude to the Circle of Honor for their exceptional generosity and for helping to make this evening a success.
Thank you all for your steadfast support and belief in our mission. Together, we are not just changing lives; we are building a future where every child can flourish. Let’s continue this journey together, ensuring that every child knows they are valued and capable of achieving their dreams.
With heartfelt appreciation and hope for the future,
David Sorkin President, Board of Directors
David Goldstein, PsyD Executive Director
Where every sick child gets the CARE they need.
Where every abused child gets the PROTECTION they need.
Where every neglected child grows up in a LOVING HOME .
Arlene Goldsmith, LCSW, Ph.D.
Founder
In 1981, Dr. Goldsmith became New Alternatives for Children’s first Executive Director. She was called on to create an agency to address an injustice of immense proportions: medically fragile children who were living in hospitals because their families didn’t have the resources to care for them at home. Driven by the strong belief that every child, regardless of their ability, deserves the same opportunities as all children, Dr. Goldsmith created a ground-breaking and innovative agency model of 360 degrees of interdisciplinary care for children and their entire family. NAC’s staff of social workers, pediatricians and educational specialists ensure that all children they serve have a home and that families and caregivers have the medical and psychological care and educational support they need to ensure success. As a result, the 3,500 children who come through NAC’s doors stay in their homes and avoid future child welfare involvement, compared to much higher rates of homelessness, juvenile justice, and child welfare involvement for this population nationwide.
Dr. Goldsmith has been and continues to be a leader in child welfare reform and a fierce advocate for children with disabilities. Her philosophy of delivering the highest quality of care that is individualized to meet the needs of each child and family is what has set NAC apart. She has been a mentor to countless NAC social workers, clinicians, staff, and children for the past forty-plus years. Dr. Goldsmith has won multiple awards for her work, including from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the prestigious Lewis Hine Award, the Hero Award from the Robin Hood Foundation, and the Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leader award, among many others. She was elected to be a Fellow at the New York Academy of Medicine and has been inducted into Columbia University’s School of Social Work’s Hall of Fame. Many NAC alumni, who faced incredible odds, demonstrate gains never thought possible among children in their circumstances, including attending college and graduate school, living independently, and fruitfully participating in the workforce.
