Water Disinfectant Concentrate Application in caravan cisterns

Description of S015

Sanosil S015 is a disinfectant concentrate suitable for disinfecting tap water, drinking water, and water for domestic use. Sanosil S015 is mainly used to disinfect water and/or pipelines but may also be used as a surface disinfectant when diluted (usually a 1:4 ratio).

The active substance used is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) which has been strengthened in its effect against microorganisms by adding 0.0075% silver to it. On the one hand, this creates a greatly improved effectiveness against micro-organisms, on the other hand it effectively stems new contamination.

The elemental oxygen (-O2) split off by the hydrogen peroxide attacks the cell walls of the microorganisms in direct contact (1). The chemical reaction of the oxygen with molecules of the cell walls denatures and destroys them by cold combustion.

The effect is intensified by silver ions, which on the one hand catalytically strengthen hydrogen peroxide, and on the other hand bind to the sulphur bridges of certain proteins of the microorganisms and thereby inactivate or precipitate them. (2)

A small introduction on caravan water hygiene

The thought of diarrhoea and vomiting caused by putrid water is a nightmare for any traveller as it could really affect their enjoyment of the journey.

Due to their construction, water systems in caravans, boats, campervans, etc. are by all means capable of becoming contaminated within a short amount of time. Infections may occur, even if this water is only used to wash, clean your teeth, or shower. However, these risks can be practically eliminated with a bit of knowledge about water hygiene and the corresponding maintenance.

1. Tank and pipelines

In untreated tanks, pumps, and pipelines, slimy bacterial films form at the corresponding temperature, especially if the water is left to dwell for a longer period of time. These bacterial films may also quickly contaminate clean water that is poured in.

Solution: cleaning and shock disinfecting the entire system both at the beginning and the end of the season

Procedure 1: a visually clean tank with no odour/residues: Fill the water tank, adding in Sanosil S015 in the process. The dosage should be 20-40ml of S015 per 10L of water. Start all pumps, fill the boiler, open the water taps, and flood all pipelines. Leave for min. 8 hours. Leave the disinfectant solution in the tank, possibly until the first operation (see Item 4: standstill)

Procedure 2: problem cases For systems that are obviously contaminated with slime formation/odour: first of all clean and rinse the tank, mechanically if possible.

Then fill it with a disinfectant solution. Dosage: 60-100ml of S015 / 10L of water. Start all pumps, fill the boiler, open the water tap, and flood all pipelines. Leave for min. 12 hours. Flush the system thoroughly. Either blow dry it (see Item 4: standstill) or flood it with fresh disinfectant solution (20-40-ml/10L) for conservation

2. Water

Drinking water from the mains system is not sterile. Although it must fulfil certain quality requirements when it enters the public network, the local authorities are no longer responsible when it comes to indoor installations.

In particular pipelines that people like to use to fill their caravans (connections in the garage, garden, etc.) often have increased levels of bacteria due to the pipelines usually not being used on a regular basis.

Solution: thoroughly flushing the water pipe before filling the tank drastically reduces the overall bacterial count. Adding Sanosil S015 whenever the tank is filled also disinfects the water and makes it last a long time.

Dosage 1: For immaculate water, a disinfected tank/canister/drinking water bag (see Item 1) and pipeline, primary use as drinking water and with regular water consumption: 2-3ml of S015/10L of water Dosage 2: For water from an unregulated source, a longer dwell time in the tank, primary use as water for domestic use/washing and dishwater: 7-10ml/10L of water.

3. Contaminated filling hoses

Garden hoses, etc. which people are happy to use to fill the caravan's tank are never completely emptied after their use.

Bacteria that thrive in humid conditions (e.g. Pseudomonas) spread exponentially in corresponding temperatures.

In public campsites, etc. there are also "specialists" who are happy to rinse out your toilet cassette with what may be the only available hose…

Solution: bring a separate hose with multiple attachments. Keep it clean. Flush it thoroughly before use and carefully empty it after use. Sporadic disinfection – ideally at the same time as the basic tank disinfection at the beginning and the end of the season.

4. Standstill

After emptying/draining the remaining water in the tank, pumps and pipelines begin to smell bad and facilitate the formation of mould in the corresponding systems.

Solution: the rule of thumb is either completely full or completely empty. If the risk of frosting can be ruled out, completely flood all pipelines. This suppresses the formation of bacteria. Dosage: 7-10ml of S015/10L (per month of expected standstill) Alternatively, completely vacuum/blow dry all pipelines using water suction/compressed air and leave them open

Dilute the Sanosil S015 as per the table immediately before use and use within 24 hours (alternatively, dilute using distilled water to extend the solution's shelf life) Apply the solution directly to the surface using a spray method or wiping method.

Leave to dry, rinsing* not necessary.

* Surfaces that come into direct contact with food: after disinfecting with a 1:4 solution of Sanosil S015 diluted with water, the treated surfaces do not need to be rinsed with the solution (leave the surfaces to dry). Approval received from the Swiss FOPH.

Dwell times (benchmarks): Bacteria, mould spores: 15 min.

Viruses, yeasts, fungi: 60 min.
