ROY PICKERILL: A Champion for NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball While writing the feature in this issue on the movement of the 2019 NCAA Division II and Division III men’s basketball championships to Indiana, many key figures involved in making that transition provided valuable information.

They included present and former members of the men’s basketball committees in each division as well as representatives of the host cities of Fort Wayne and Evansville.

One person with whom I spoke several times for the piece did not receive mention. It became clear to me that the insight Roy Pickerill provided should stand alone.

With 15 years as the assistant media coordinator and 10 as the media coordinator for the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Elite Eight championships, Pickerill is woven into the fabric of the event. His knowledge of the history, coaches, players, records and minutia of Division II men’s basketball is incomparable. All of this work done as a volunteer.

“Roy has been an integral part of the Division II Men’s Elite Eight for 25 years and has worked with many different individuals here at the NCAA,” said Donnie Wagner, NCAA associate director, championships and alliances. “Whether it was ensuring that the CBS crew had what they needed or handling something for one of the participating SIDs, Roy has always made sure that the media got what they needed.

He is a true professional who has dedicated his life to basketball and I know how much the Men’s Elite Eight means to him.”

Pickerill, a native of Louisville, is embedded in basketball country. He has been with Kentucky Wesleyan College for 46 years, including four years as an undergraduate. After 29 years as the College’s sports information director, he retired and NABC

is in his fourth year as SID Emeritus and special assistant for college relations.

Having spent those 46 years in Owensboro, Ky., a 45-minute drive “across the river” from Evansville, home to the College Division championships, the forerunner of Division II championships, for its first 20 years.

“Evansville (University) set the standard for hosting NCAA events and hosted more College/Division II tournaments (23) than any other site in history,” said Pickerill, “Bob Hudson was the assistant athletic director and largely responsible for the success of the tournaments there, serving as tournament director for the first 20 years.”

Pickerill, who has earned multiple honors for sports information including induction in the CoSIDA Hall of Fame and the Warren Berg Award, presented to a college division member who has made outstanding contributions in sports information, is also the keeper of the comprehensive Division II men’s basketball championship records.

Roy is a legend in the sports information field.

His love for Division II athletics is unrivaled and his passion for the profession is as well.

Every year when I go to CoSIDA, one of the first things I see is Roy holding court. There’s a circle of SIDs around him. Some are DII and DIII men and women, while others are stars of the profession from prominent athletic departments. Some are young, some are old. Some have worked in the profession for months, while others have for decades.

Regardless, they all know and love Roy and have the utmost respect for what he means to Kentucky Wesleyan and our profession.

And they all link Roy with the Division II Elite Eight. That terrific championship has been the beneficiary of the countless volunteer hours Roy has spent working in it, and we could not be more appreciative of those efforts.

Information that may not be in those written records, Pickerill easily recalls in conversation. Having been an SID in Division II myself for 36 years at Southern Connecticut, I asked him about some of coach Joe O’Brien’s great Assumption College teams, finishing second in the championship in three consecutive seasons (197375). He not only knew when that team played in the Elite Eight but also named three of the Greyhounds’ AllAmerica players from those teams.

It’s seems fitting that over the next four years, Roy Pickerill will have a short drive to Evansville to once again help raise the banner for the game he loves – NCAA Division II men’s basketball.

Recruiting Calendar, Family Time, Enhanced Education for Coaches Q&A with Executive Director Jim Haney The Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee (MBOC) is planning to reach out to coaches after the 2019 Final Four regarding the recruiting calendar. They will be looking for feedback from coaches.

Can you share any insights you have?

In the aftermath of the Commission on Men’s Basketball’s recommendations and approval of those recommendations by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, there was impactful change to the Spring and Summer recruiting calendar. Phil Martelli of St. Joseph’s University, Cuonzo Martin of the University of Missouri and I are members of the MBOC. During the MBOC discussions that led to the new calendar, we consistently voiced our concerns for any increased number of evaluation days in the summer as well increased evaluation days on weekends.

In an effort by the NCAA to collaborate with the NBA, NBA players association (NBPA) and USA Basketball, per the Commission’s recommendations, the MBOC approved college coaches attending two days of the MBPA’s Top 100 Camp for the first time. That camp is in June and butts up to Father’s Day Weekend. The vast majority of college coaches do not recruit those top 100 prospects. However, for some coaches, attendance will be a necessity not to evaluate prospects per se but to be seen

by those prospects. June becomes further complicated based on USA Basketball’s tryouts and international competitions. When you consider the two scholastic weekends the end of June, some coaches will be out most of June.

I believe the MBOC’s interest in studying the recruiting calendar is an outgrowth of the discussions that were sensitive to coach time demands in the summer.

Do you have additional thoughts on this topic?

Coaches work hard and must devote many hours to their perspective programs. Their success on the court with their teams is impacted greatly by success in recruiting and coaching their respective teams. That success requires time commitment. Having said that, I am very concerned for our coaches’ marriages and families. Now, I am one who believes that there is an order of priorities in life. One’s relationship with God comes first. One’s family comes second. Third, is one’s job. Having been a college coach, I remember all too well the time demands spent attending to the needs of the team and players as well as related job responsibilities.

It was very difficult to maintain the balance among God, family and job based on so much pressure to win games, monitor players’ education and off court life, recruit and fulfill athletic department and university appearances.

As much as we love our wives, saying we do so only goes so far. We express our priorities by our actions and specifically time. If our wives and children are a priority, then we must spend quality time with them. The time we spend with our wives and children speaks volumes. So too does the time we spend with recruits as we try to forge a relationship. We often find ourselves attending events not to evaluate a specific prospect but to be seen attending the prospect’s game. We attend events not to recruit and evaluate but to be seen. When NCAA recruiting regulations foster unnecessary travel to recruit, we need to step back and reevaluate those rules. No one knows the better than you as coaches whether changes to the recruiting calendar are needed. Of course, the challenge is there are 351 Division I programs, which will likely result in a wide range of thoughts on what changes, if any, are needed.

The NCAA is scheduled to send out a questionnaire after the 2019 Final Four seeking feedback from coaches. We encourage you to provide your thoughts.

When you spoke of balance of priorities you spoke of God, family and job. Where does God enter into this equation?

So often we think of attending church or synagogue on the weekend as interfacing with God. However, we have the opportunity through faith to communicate with God at any time, 24/7/365. We can spend time with Him anytime, anywhere for as long or as short a time as we want. If God is a priority, then we will spend time with Him. I know in my life when times became tough and difficult and I felt overwhelmed by circumstances, I would desperately reach out to Him through prayer.

disillusioned in “religion” because of what someone said or did who claimed to be a Christian. These issues can become obstacles to reaching out to God. It is my fervent hope that you find peace with God.

You have expressed your support of enhanced education for assistant coaches and non-coaching staff members to become future head coaches. Tell us about it.

The NABC Ad Hoc Committee for Men’s Basketball addressed this concern through a recommendation supported by the Committee on Men’s Basketball but not supported by the DI Council and Board of Directors. The proposal would have permitted two non-coaching staff members to have limited coaching opportunities in the belief that these staff members could be trained and become viable assistant coach candidates. I believe the professional development of coaches and growing the pool of future assistant and head coaches is a key function of a coaches’ association. Unfortunately, there really is no entry level position comparable to how many of today’s head coaches entered the coaching profession. They were volunteers or graduate assistants. For the good of the game and its future we need to train the next generation of coaches and expand the pool of candidates.

I also know that God can get blamed for tragic events in our life or we become

GETTING BUCKETS Introducing the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2018

In this age of analytics and deep statistical dives, there is one universal truth about basketball. You have to score to win.

Several members of the 2018 National Basketball Hall of Fame class did that about as well it could be done. “Bucket-getters,� is what CBS analyst Clark Kellogg, a co-host with Doug Gottlieb of the induction ceremony on Nov. 18 at Arvest Theater at The Midland in Kansas City, called them.

Start with Otis Birdsong. At Houston, the smooth shooting guard averaged 14.3 points as a freshman and before the end of his sophomore season had eclipsed 1,000 career points.

Birdsong went on to average 24.6 points as a junior, 30.3 as a senior and finished his career with 2,832 points, the 15th highest total in NCAA history. He was named Southwest Conference player of the year in 1977.

It helps to know how to shoot.

“I came out of the womb being able to shoot the basketball,” Birdsong said. “It was a gift. I’m just going to be honest about it. I did work on it, to enhance that gift. But I’ve always been able to shoot the basketball.”

Sidney Moncrief was a remarkably accurate shooter at Arkansas from 1975-79, leading the nation in field goal percentage as a freshman. He finished his college career shooting 60.6 percent from the field.

One of the famed “Triplets” alongside Ron Brewer and Marvin Delph, Moncrief was named the top player in the Southwest Conference in 1979.

“This feels natural,” Moncrief said during the induction ceremony, “because of what we accomplished as a team.” That includes a trip to the 1978 Final Four, and the beginning of sustained program success over the next few decades.

North Carolina’s 1982 NCAA title team is remembered as one of the greatest of all time. Michael Jordan was a freshman, James Worthy a senior.

But the most productive college career belonged to big man Sam Perkins, who played for the Tar Heels from 1980-84. He’s the second leading rebounder and thirdleading scorer (2,145 points) in the history of North Carolina basketball.

Perkins was one of the smoothest operators in the game’s history. He shot 57.6 percent for his career and went on to a 17-year NBA career.

“I had to really practice, and I always looked forward to practice,” Perkins said.

Spoken like a player who appreciated his coach, and Perkins spent much of his acceptance speaking of Dean Smith and North Carolina’s top assistant Roy Williams.

“The way we held ourselves accountable,” Perkins said.

“All the talks with Coach Smith, the little suggestions

by Roy Williams, Bill Guthridge and Eddie Fogler, it was the best four years in my career.”

There was a pleasant surprise package for the Tar Heels’ star as Williams, along with assistant Hubert Davis and former UNC star Phil Ford, flew to Kansas City to celebrate Perkins’ induction.

Sean Elliott changed Arizona basketball. He grew up in Tucson and remembered watching East Coast teams like North Carolina with Perkins. As a high school sophomore, Elliott went to an Arizona game.

There were no more than 1,000 in the stands and he was able to work his way down to a front court seat. The Wildcats finished 4-24.

“There was no way I entertained the thought of playing at Arizona,” Elliott said.

Then Coach Lute Olson came to Arizona and started selling the program locally, and change occurred rapidly. Elliott, lightly recruited, decided to stay home for his college career, and a few years later, the Wildcats had reached the Final Four.

Elliott earned consensus All-America in 1988 and 1989, and finished his career with 2,555 points, surpassing Lew Alcindor to become the conference’s all-time scoring leader.

One of the best scoring guards of his day, Paul Westphal of Southern California averaged 20.3 points as a senior in 1972. From a team standpoint, his junior year was the most successful.

The Trojans finished 24-2, with both losses to national champion UCLA. Westphal went on to a long coaching career in college and the NBA and said one of the best pieces of advice he ever received came from one of his coaching mentors, Cotton Fitzsimmons. It involved getting buckets: “Westy, when I’m gone put this on my tombstone, ‘You can’t have too many shooters.’”

Marvin Webster could get buckets. He scored 1,990 points in his career at Morgan State. But the player known as “The Human Eraser” was at his best preventing them and collecting the missed buckets of opponents.

Webster posted astonishing averages of 21 points and 22.4 rebounds as a college senior when he was named the Division II player of the year.

Webster died in 2009 and was represented at the induction ceremony by his brother, Steve.

“It started out with me and Marvin going to the playground,” Steve Webster said. “He grew lanky and guys would laugh at him. I’d scold (Marvin) and told him he had to get his game together. Then he started developing on the playgrounds of Baltimore.”

The inducted coaches rank among the winningest in the game.

Only four coaches have succeeded at a greater rate than John Kresse, whose teams won 79.7 percent of their games from 1979-2002 at College of Charleston.

He took the program from the NAIA, where it won the 1983 national championship, to NCAA Division I, and never stopped winning. The Cougars went to the NCAA Tournament four times in Kresse’s tenure.

“It starts with what I learned many years ago,” Kresse said. “A head coach is only as good as his assistants, his players and the fans. I had the best of all three.”

Oregon Tech’s Danny Miles, whose 45-year career ended in 2016, ranks as one of the greatest winners in the game’s history. His 1,040 career victories rank fourth in any classification, and his teams won three NAIA Division II championships.

But Miles didn’t stop at basketball. He also served for seven years as the school’s baseball coach and was an assistant football coach and offensive coordinator.

“Back then everybody coached more than one sport,” Miles said. “It’s what you did.”

Winning also is what Miles did. His final team at Oregon Tech finished 23-9.

HALL OF FAME One of the most prolific scorers in college basketball history, Houston’s Otis Birdsong tallied 2,832 points from 1973-77 - a total that still ranks 15th in Division I history. Birdsong is second in the Houston record books in scoring, third in steals and eighth in assists, and he became the first Cougar to reach the 1,000-point mark as a sophomore. After averaging 30.3 points per game and leading UH to the NIT title game as a senior, he was named the Southwest Conference Player of the Year and a consensus All-American.

Birdsong was selected No. 2 overall in the 1977 NBA Draft by the Kansas City Kings and went on to score more than 12,000 career points and make four NBA All-Star teams as a professional.

Sean Elliott helped establish Arizona as a national power, leading the Wildcats to the program’s first Final Four in 1988. Elliott scored an Arizona-record 2,555 points from 1985-89 and is also first in school history in made free throws and third in three-point field goal percentage. His accolades included the 1986 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, the 1988 and 1989 Pac-10 Player of the Year, consensus All-American in 1988 and 1989, and Wooden Award, NABC Player of the Year and AP Player of the Year honors in 1989. Elliott was drafted third overall by the San Antonio Spurs in 1989, was a twotime NBA All-Star and helped lead the Spurs to the 1999 NBA title.

One of the famed “Razorback Triplets,” Sidney Moncrief piled up 2,066 points for Arkansas from 1976-79, the second-most in program history. Moncrief received multiple All-America accolades in the 1977-78 season that saw the Razorbacks win the Southwest Conference title and reach the Final Four. He then earned consensus All-America honors and was the SWC Player of the Year as a senior in 1979. Moncrief played 10 of his 11 professional seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, and was a five-time All-Star, a five-time All-NBA selection, a four-time NBA All-Defensive team pick and a two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.

Sam Perkins achieved both team and individual success at North Carolina from 1980-84. He was the ACC Rookie of the Year in 1981, a two-time consensus All-American and a three-time All-ACC First Team pick, along with helping lead the Tar Heels to the 1982 national championship. He remains the third-highest scorer in UNC history with 2,145 points, while his 1,167 rebounds still rank second.

Perkins was a co-captain on the 1984 gold-medal winning U.S. Olympic team and was named to the ACC’s 50th Anniversary team in 2002. After being drafted No. 4 overall by the Dallas Mavericks in 1984, Perkins played 17 seasons in the NBA, scoring more than 15,000 points.

CLASS OF 2018 Dubbed “The Human Eraser,” the late Marvin Webster was one of the most dominant big men in college basketball history. From 197175, Webster tallied an NCAA-record 2,267 rebounds, and his 740 boards in 1974 and 650 in 1973 are the two highest single-season totals in Division II history. Webster was a three-time MEAC Player of the Year, and he holds Bears’ program records in rebounding, blocks, field goals made and free throws made. He averaged 21 points, 22.4 rebounds and eight blocked shots in 1973-74, leading Morgan State to the Division II national title. Webster was drafted in the first round of both the NBA and ABA Drafts in 1975 and played 10 professional seasons.

A prolific scorer for USC from 1969-72, Paul Westphal averaged 16.4 points over his career - the ninth-highest scoring average in program history. He was a two-time All-Pac-8 First Team selection and received numerous All-America accolades in 1971 and 1972.

Westphal followed his collegiate career with a successful run in the NBA. After being drafted No. 10 overall in 1972 by the Boston Celtics, he went on to make five All-Star teams and four All-NBA teams and was a member of the 1974 NBA champion Celtics squad. After finishing his playing career, Westphal held head coaching positions with Southwestern Baptist Bible, Grand Canyon and Pepperdine, along with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, Seattle SuperSonics and Sacramento Kings.

John Kresse spent 23 years as the head coach at College of Charleston, winning 560 games to just 143 losses. His 79.7-percent career winning percentage is the fifth highest all-time among Division I coaches. Kresse built Charleston into an NAIA power in the 1980s, highlighted by a national championship in 1983. After the Cougars transitioned to NCAA Division I, Kresse’s Cougars reached four NCAA Tournaments and two NITs between 1994 and 1999. He won four conference Coach of the Year awards following the jump to NCAA Division I after earlier receiving five District Coach of the Year honors from the NAIA. In recognition of Kresse’s decorated career, the playing surface at Charleston’s TD Arena was named John Kresse Court.

Danny Miles served his entire 45-year head coaching career at Oregon Tech, leading the Owls to NAIA Division II national titles in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Miles won his 1,000th game in 2014 and finished his historic career with 1,040 victories - the fourth-highest total among all NCAA and NAIA head coaches. Miles› teams won 30 or more games 10 times and claimed a total of 23 regular-season conference and conference tournament championships. FUTURE OF BASKETBALL ANALYTICS ON DISPLAY AT HALL OF FAME CLASSIC

Texas Tech stole the headlines.

Chris Beard’s squad won two games by an average of 16.5 points to capture the championship at November’s Hall of Fame Classic. It was an impressive showing in Kansas City from Beard’s young team, led by a lockdown defense and an offense that found its rhythm.

But the Red Raiders’ performance was only part of the story.

This season’s Hall of Fame Classic marked the NCAA Division I debut of ShotTracker data and analytics, giving college basketball a glimpse at technology’s future within the game.

ShotTracker generates statistics that can’t be found in traditional box scores, from lineup optimizations to offensive and defensive efficiency data based on possession type. Many Division I programs have outfitted their practice gyms with the technology, and the NAIA national championship has used the system in recent years. But the Hall of Fame Classic was ShotTracker’s in-game debut at the sport’s highest level.

Using sensors affixed to Sprint Center’s rafters and inside the game balls along with small wearable devices worn on players’ shoes, ShotTracker delivered data in real-time through its mobile app.

ESPN’s broadcasts were enhanced through onscreen displays of ShotTracker’s player tracking and zone charts. The arena’s video board integrated

ShotTracker elements into its live game feed and highlight packages.

And perhaps most significantly, coaching staffs were permitted to access the data on tablets during live game play – also a first at the Division I level thanks to a NCAA waiver.

The use of technology on team benches during competition is currently not allowed by NCAA playing rules. The NCAA, in effect, agreed to use the Hall of Fame Classic as a pilot event as it continues to evaluate bench technology, and had multiple staff attend the games to see the system first-hand.

ShotTracker and the NABC – which both call Kansas City home - have enjoyed a longstanding relationship and share a commitment to advancing college basketball. Integrating ShotTracker’s technology into the NABC-owned Hall of Fame Classic was a natural next step.

The on-court showing from Texas Tech, Nebraska, USC and Missouri State at the event delivered, reaffirming its reputation as one of college basketball’s premier early-season tournaments.

Texas Tech’s victory over Nebraska in the championship game included a 12-0 first-half run and 26 points from tournament MVP Jarrett Culver.

But the ShotTracker data painted an even more detailed picture of the Red Raiders’ competitive advantages.

similar sets for Nebraska. The Red Raiders shot 67-percent on possessions that included both a paint touch and ball reversal, and their most effective lineup combination allowed just 14 points on 19 defensive possessions.

Miles specifically pointed to the first half of his team’s semifinal win over Missouri State, where ShotTracker’s app identified a disparity in Nebraska’s offensive efficiency based on its number of passes per possession.

Many in attendance at Sprint Center – coaches, fans and media alike - had never seen statistics so advanced.

“We talked about ball movement with our team at halftime,” Miles said. “Instead of coaches barking at you for another reason, you’ve got the information right there. The raw data just confirmed the points we were trying to get across to our guys.”

Texas Tech coach Chris Beard was among those who came away impressed.

“It’s awesome. I’m a basketball guy. I grew up buying basketball cards and looking at the stats on the back,” Beard said. “Back in the JUCO days when we had nothing, we would stay up all night to get stats and chart things.”

“This is the next level of technology in basketball,” he said. “ShotTracker is trendsetting.”

Nebraska coach Tim Miles - an early-adopter of basketball’s analytics revolution who has multiple staff members assigned to tracking advanced statistics – also saw the benefit of having access to real-time data on the bench.

“We know the value of it,” Miles said. “I was excited.

All it does is make the game better.”

“Usually you have a feeling about what’s going on,” he added. “But when you have actual data to prove it, and it’s right there for everybody to see, it’s really helpful.”

And following his experience at the Hall of Fame Classic, count Miles among the advocates for a deregulation of bench technology rules.

“It improves the game, and improves it equally between the two teams,” Miles told Bleacher Report. “To me, that’s fair game.

As I look at it, what’s the problem with making the game better?”

Whether or not resources like ShotTracker become a mainstay on college basketball benches remains to be seen, as concerns such as financial disparities and arena WiFi capabilities must be addressed.

But technology no doubt is here to stay in college basketball.

And considering the innovation on display at the 2018 Hall of Fame Classic, the possibilities appear endless.

Looking to Share Some Hoosier Hysteria: NCAA Division II and III Championships Moving on to Indiana

Not long after Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball at a YMCA Training School in Springfield, Mass., in 1891, one of his proteges, Reverend Nicholas McKay, introduced the game at a YMCA in Crawfordsville, Ind. While Springfield rightfully holds the title of the “Birthplace of Basketball”, it was The Hoosier State that quickly adopted, nurtured and grew the game with unbridled passion.

Indiana’s love affair with basketball, many call it Hoosier Hysteria, hasn’t waned in more than 125 years.

This year, Indiana basketball fans will have a pair of NCAA national championship tournaments. The NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship semifinals and championship are scheduled for March 15-16 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne.

A short time later, March 27-30, the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship Elite Eight will be played at the Ford Center in Evansville.

Can it get any better for Indiana basketball fans?

Actually, it will.

The NCAA, with headquarters in Indianapolis, has awarded Fort Wayne and Evansville four consecutive years to hold the championships meaning that in 2021, with the NCAA Division I Men’s Final Four set for Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, all three championships will be played in Indiana.

Adding another unique layer to this equation, the games in Fort Wayne and Indy will be played in the Eastern time zone while the Division II event in Evansville will be played in the Central time zone.

2019 NCAA Division III Championship Semifinal and Final March 15-16 Allen County War Memorial Coliseum -Fort Wayne, IN “As a committee, we think about the national championships and what the student-athlete experience will be,” said Sam Atkinson, chair of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee and associate director of athletics for communications at Gallaudet University.

“The championship had a great 23-year run in Salem, Va., and while it’s sad to leave, we are very excited about Fort Wayne, a great city in a great basketball state.”

“It was the responsibility of the committee to make sure wherever the tournament went was very attractive and had a wow factor for the student athletes. Fort Wayne offers those amenities and a state-of-the-art facility and flexibility with the seating arrangements for different size crowds,” Atkinson said. “The people there are super motivated and excited to host and doing everything they can to make sure things are done just right.”

Fort Wayne began looking at bidding in 2014-15 as the community sought to expand and grow its sports tourism business to take advantage of its outstanding sports facilities.

“We had a Notre Dame women’s basketball game at the Coliseum and at the end of the game, Irish head coach Muffet McGraw praised the facility and said maybe the city should pursue hosting a women’s regional, which will happen in 2020,” said Nathan Dennison, vice president of sales at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. “In developing an excellent partnership with Manchester University, we were awarded the NABC

Division III wrestling regional in 2017 and now received the bid for the men’s basketball championship.

“This is a win/win for everyone, putting Fort Wayne on the map for Division III. We hope the coaches and athletes will find a very welcoming and dynamic atmosphere.”

In addition to the NCAA games, the NABC will also hold its annual Division III College All-Star game during the championship, featuring the most outstanding senior players in Division III. “We are going to a terrific venue in the heartland of our country and a hotbed for basketball,“ said NABC president Charlie Brock of Springfield College. “We are proud to continue providing an opportunity for seniors to be able to play in a championship atmosphere at the allstar game and Fort Wayne has been very welcoming, organized and invigorated about the championship.”

2019 NCAA Division II Elite Eight March 27-30 Ford Center, Evansville, IN It will be a record 24th NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship for Evansville, which began in 1957 when the NCAA had only two divisions, a University Division and a College Division. Evansville University was the host institution for the first 20 seasons and transitioned to NCAA Division I in 1977 with the championship moving to Springfield, Mass.

The 2019 event will be hosted for the fourth time by the University of Southern Indiana.

“The Evansville Sports Corporation has been passionate about bringing events here with a top facility in the Ford Center and a passionate fan base,” said Jon Mark Hall, the director of athletics at USI and also a member of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee.

“The NCAA went for a four-year bid process and USI was awarded with the bid for four years. We’re very NABC

excited and there is an advantage to hosting multiple years in a row.

Someone knows if they watched one, they would want to come back again.”

“The wonderful thing about basketball interest in Indiana is that it’s not just about Division I basketball but at all levels – a passion that folks who live and grew up here have but maybe a little hard to explain,” Hall said. “People gravitate to this championship because they love basketball.”

Jeff Wilson, former chair of the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Committee and the head coach at East Stroudsburg University would like to see the NCAA have a joint championship in the same city as took place in Atlanta in 2013 and sees Indiana as a possibility.

“Having all three championship games in one city was terrific for student-athletes, fans, coaches, everyone,” Wilson said. “We’re hopeful that it could happen again soon with all three division championships at one site during the Final Four.”

The NABC will resume its NABC Division II College All-Star game in Evansville in 2019. The annual game could not be scheduled during the Elite Eight a year ago in Sioux Falls as the NCAA held both the Division II men’s and women’s championships at the same site.

In Evansville, 20 Division II senior student-athletes will be selected to play in the all-star game, which is held on Friday, an off-day between the semifinals and championship game.

“There is an amazing buzz and excitement for basketball throughout the state and we receive tremendous support from fans and the business community,” said Evansville Sports Corporation Executive Director Eric Marvin. “People in this area are really dedicated to the sport and Indiana overall takes their interest in college basketball to another level – Basketball is King!”

June D-I Scholastic Recruiting Events – Works in Progress

by Dave Archer, Sr. Director of Operations, NHSBCA and NABC Board Member High school coaches have been working and waiting for a decade or longer for an opportunity to restore their integral role in the college recruitment process of their players. The original influential role that a high school coach filled has been lost to non-scholastic coaches and third parties.

Scholastic basketball coaches for the most part have the most certifications, licensing, training and have met the most character and background checks/requirements to work with youth in sports. Scholastic coaches understand that the athletic experience is an extension of the educational day and that a goal is to help players become their best selves. It is assumed that all coaches, scholastic and non-scholastic, are teaching teamwork, resiliency, and accountability. Scholastic coaches are in a position to play a more comprehensive role in the overall development of the student athlete.

The media coverage of the FBI investigation into possible college basketball recruiting corruption in the fall of 2017 created a potential opening to bring about change.

The National High School Basketball Coaches Association (NHSBCA) prepared for a role and went to work. Research was conducted and information was gathered and shared through the process of the Rice Commission and NCAA legislative actions taken in August, 2018.

The NCAA did designate the National Federation of State High School Associations as the entity that could approve events. The NFHS did develop the criteria to be used and did share them with the NHSBCA and NFHS on October 22, 2018.

While the NFHS focused on the approval process, the NHSBCA focused on the structure and operation of the events. A vast majority of the NHSBCA Annual Summer Conference was spent with over 30 state basketball leaders working collaboratively in committees developing

different models for scholastic summer events. The NHSBCA developed five event models that could be used during the June time periods. An Operations Manual is being produced to provide detailed information.

At this point, State Athletic Associations should be working with the State Basketball Coaches Association in their states to hold events. Some states are planning to hold an event for players in their states. Other states plan to work collaboratively to hold a multi-state event. Some states will be sitting this out and hopefully will participate in the future.

While the focus of these events and the designated June period is on potential D-I men’s basketball players, the NHSBCA plans to address the much larger picture. The number of high school players who accept a scholarship to play D-I basketball each year is actually very small.

The NHSBCA’s plan is to provide information and programming for every high school basketball coach in the country to use with their players and their parents/ guardians. The goal is to help every high school coach of boys’ teams and girls’ teams navigate the process of their players being recruited or planning to walk-on at a NCAA D-II or D-III program as well as NAIA and two-year college programs.

The NHSBCA, in large and small groups, meets regularly to provide suggestions, support, advice, and clarification to state athletic associations and state basketball coaches’ associations. The progress of ideas and actions in each state are being tracked as best as can be done.

More than 20,000 international student-athletes are enrolled and competing at NCAA schools. Are you ready to recruit around the globe?

If international basketball students aren’t already on your agenda, they most likely will be. Since 2010, the number of Division I international men’s basketball student-athletes has increased by a whopping 141%, with numbers expected to climb.

As a coach, these far-from-home students look to you for guidance on a wider range of issues than domestic students: everything from obtaining their initial-eligibility certifications to assimilating to a new campus and country. The NCAA Eligibility Center can assist with considerations international student-athletes face during the initial-eligibility certification process.

These three simple steps the student takes to start the initial eligibility process help prevent delays and ease the process for both you and the prospective student-athlete.

1. Register with the Eligibility Center.

For students in year nine and 10, the first step is to encourage the college-bound student-athlete to register with the Eligibility Center. Creating an account takes about 30 minutes and is completed online at eligibilitycenter.org. Before registering, students will need to have access to three things: 1) A valid email the student will have access to after graduation from high school; 2) their basic education history starting from age 12; and 3) their sports participation history. Registering ensures the Eligibility Center can communicate next steps and requirements to the student as their initial eligibility is processed.

Once registration is complete and the $150 international student registration fee is paid, the student is assigned a 10-digit NCAA identification (ID) number. This number stays with the student for the extent of their relationship with the NCAA and is needed for a Division I or Division II school to activate the student to an institutional request list

When registering, using the NCAA Eligibility Center code of 9999 ensures the student’s scores are sent directly to the Eligibility Center.

When submitting required documentation, such as transcripts, the student’s NCAA ID number and their first and last name should always be in the email’s subject line. This simple yet often overlooked step assists with linking submitted documents to the student’s profile and prevents unnecessary delays.

Living Examples of Hope

“ I believe coaches can influence everyone around them— especially their players— in similar ways.”

About 25 years ago, I moved my family to Chicago to work with a church in an impoverished urban community that was known for being a very violent area. We moved to a street in the neighborhood that even people in our church tried to discourage me from moving there. The house next door was a drug house, with all the activity you might expect, at all hours of the day and night. Thankfully, it worked out well for my family. I think we helped some people, and we definitely learned a lot.

After moving away for many years, my bride and I moved back just eighteen months ago. Our kids are grown now, and we aren’t living on the same block as before, but our community still needs hope and encouragement.

And they need positive role models. This became clear to me recently when I spoke with a man named Jeff, who is in his forties. He said, “Mr. Casey, you don’t remember me, but I used to be your next-door neighbor over 20 years ago.”

I said, “You were in the drug house?”

“Yes,” Jeff said. “I used to sell drugs.

And when y’all moved in next to us, it was bad for business. I’d see you sitting out on the porch, or you’d put candles in the windows at Christmas, and it just changed things. I saw how you lived and how you managed your family, and although I was selling dope, I could tell you were giving hope.” Eventually, Jeff started working at a nearby barber shop and I’d go there for haircuts, but I didn’t remember him.

Today he’s a different man. He’s married, a devoted father to four children, and he owns the barber shop.

He’s involved in the local church and a positive influence in the neighborhood, even with some of the people who used to buy drugs from him. He calls me “Dad,” and I’ve become like a granddad to his children. He told me, “You modeled for me what a father and a man of God is supposed to be.”

Now, I can’t take credit for Jeff getting his life together. As I have said, I don’t even remember him, but he was watching. I guess I was just being a

husband and a father and living my life, and somehow he noticed something good in our family.

Even though this story has nothing to do with basketball, I believe coaches can influence everyone around them— especially their players—in similar ways.

So many young people today come from tough backgrounds, often with no dad around. They may not even realize it, but they’re looking for hope. They may show people negativity, rudeness, arrogance, and so on, but they want something much better. They want to see an optimistic future, whether that’s the NBA, coaching, or succeeding in some other pursuit.

Coaches, through your modeling, you can have a game-changing influence on people, even if you never realize it. Your players are watching you and how you conduct yourself when you’re coming out of the locker room, talking to referees or the press, and enduring a long road trip.

Others watch coaches, too—people in the stands, in your neighborhood, and at your kids’ school. Maybe people like Jeff. They see how you carry yourself at the grocery store, checking your mail, and whether you open doors for your bride. Somehow, the role of coach has been given a place of influence in our culture, so that you’re automatically seen as a leader in the community.

That’s a privilege that comes with big responsibility.

Of course, don’t forget that your children are watching as well. You probably know all this, so let this be a reminder to watch yourself. Live with poise and character. Be faithful and do the basics in your various roles. Be a living example of hope for anyone who may be watching you.

Familiar strokes dash up and down as the magic marker diagrams the strategy with x’s and o’s. Heads nod as coach makes the strategy clear. Every eye studies the play with attentive focus. One only need take a step back to see the new play is brilliant.

However, a brilliant play is useless unless you put it into practice. One thing I love about coaching is the unapologetic expectation to run the play, not just read it. The only way to go from play design to play execution is practice.

Jesus says, “As for everyone who comes to me, hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like” (Luke 6:47 NIV). Undefeatable.

Wow! Talk about coaching. The Bible is the greatest playbook. Jesus expects his followers to put his words into practice.

Jesus says, “love your enemies.” That’s not poetry. That’s a play straight out of His playbook. Most of us struggle to love the people we should love naturally (i.e., parent, spouse, sibling, child). Loving your enemy includes haters. Jesus unapologetically expects his team to run his plays, not just read them.

The design of a play is only the beginning of the process. Players come, hear and then are expected to practice. Imagine a team that meets with the coach to hear the plays but never practices.

Without practice, all we’ve had is a nice talk. Jesus is interested in far more than just a nice talk.

Practice makes permanent. Players run the same play over and over until it becomes a reflex. Bible study is great.

Reading the bible by itself does not translate into action. You actually have to put his words into practice.

Here’s a play that Jesus expects us to run. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I [Coach Jesus] tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart”

(Matthew 5:27-28). You read that play and think I may not make the team let alone be a starter who can run that play?

“With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26).

Trying to live this life without God is like trying to dribble a completely deflated basketball. Until you are filled up with Him, it’s impossible. Invite him to live in you and coach you!

You may be thinking that there are many people in the Bible who have had that problem and you’re right. It’s in the bible not for us to emulate but to learn why not to follow that example. It’s like watching the film after the game so we can correct our own mistakes.

In the same way a coach expects his team to run plays in the game, Jesus expects his team to run his plays in life.

It’s amazing to watch student athletes practice free throws, dribbling, and passing among other drills. They do the same drill over and over and over until it becomes permanent.

God has given us the Bible, the greatest playbook. As we practice praying, forgiving, loving, giving and repenting over and over, living his way becomes a reflex. We get a win!

We win people. We win our enemies.

We win our spouse. We win our sibling.

We win our children. We win haters. We win communities. We win cities. We win people of other nations. We win other coaches. We win players. Just then, Coach Jesus stands on the court encouraging us. “good job team…well done.”

ADVANTAGE TRANSITION DRILL Emphasizing Passing with a Purpose and Offensive Rebounding Dale Wellman, Head Coach, Nebraska Wesleyan University 2018 NABC Division III Coach of the Year At Nebraska Wesleyan we like to play fast and take advantage of transition opportunities. We averaged 95.5 points a game last season, and we’d like to think a big part of that was because of the numerous transition drills that we use to drive home our philosophies, while also teaching our guys how to play smart at a faster pace. This is one of the more competitive drills that our guys get into and enjoy. We also tailor it to emphasize our desire to offensive rebound.

It starts with five guys for one team (TEAM A) lined up facing five players from the other team (TEAM B) on either side of midcourt. We do not ask certain positions to line up in a certain place or have the same positions facing each other. A coach stands on the sideline in between the two teams with a ball.

We put eight seconds on the shot clock to begin each round. We believe that if we push the ball hard enough in transition, whether it is after a make, a miss, or turnover, we can create an advantage, BUT this advantage is a small window. We preach passing with a purpose. Do not throw the ball ahead in transition just simply to get rid of it.

You must recognize the advantage and pass accordingly.

Giving the team eight seconds emphasizes making quick decisions to get the best possible shot.

The coach will throw the ball to one player on TEAM A (Diagram 1). The corresponding player that is in front of him on TEAM B will immediately leak out to the opposite end of the court. TEAM A will then have eight seconds to pass with a purpose and get up a shot. TEAM A only gets one shot. It is 5v4 so they should be able to get a great look if they pass with a purpose (Diagram 2). If they make it, they receive two or three points depending on where the shot was taken. HOWEVER, we preach eight feet in the paint offensive rebounding, so the four guys on TEAM A that are supposed to rebound will crash (Diagram 3).

It is key for us that the one person who is supposed to get back, does in fact get back, because TEAM B has the player that leaked out at the beginning of the drill. If the shot is missed TEAM A can get one point for an offensive rebound. Once they secure the offensive rebound, they place the ball on the floor and sprint back.

It is key that TEAM A not turn the ball over. A live ball turnover will result in an easy two points for the other team as they will be able to throw it ahead to the leaked-out team member.

Once TEAM B touches the ball, they can go with it (Diagram 4). They do not have to take the ball out on a made shot by TEAM A. We want to make it hard on TEAM A, who just shot and sent four guys to the glass, to sprint back and stop them. We will have the clock reset to 20 seconds when TEAM B touches the ball. They then will play 5v5 starting with transition. TEAM B is allowed more than one shot during this possession. The round is not over until TEAM B scores or TEAM A gets a stop. We still continue to reward an extra point for offensive rebounds.

Once that round is over, teams return to the alignment at mid-court and the coach throws the ball to the other team (TEAM B) to begin the next round. We will play this for 6-8 minutes or for a certain number of rounds. Losing team will run.
