The 3 Mistakes to Avoid When Running a Plant Nursery It feels so good when your hobby turns into the biggest source of earning. You love working and get paid in return for the same. Gardening is also one of them. If you love plants and spending time with them, you can take it as an opportunity and earn from the comfort of your home. People generally start with one or two plants at their backyard and slowly turn the area into a plant nursery. The beginning of the home nursery is slow but once it holds the pace, the result is amazing. Most people fear starting a nursery thinking it’s very different from normal gardening and requires specialized knowledge. But, that’s not true. Except for a few factors, most of the things are common in maintaining both home gardening and a plant nursery. Just like normal gardening, you need to take a few precautions and avoid mistakes so that everything goes smoothly and you get healthy plants.

1. Selection of wrong-sized containers To make the sale easy and comfortable for the buyers to carry, the plant nursery owners often purchase one-sized containers, which are generally very small. If you are working with a single plant type, then one pot size will not be an issue for you but not otherwise. Based on the plant types and space they need to grow, you should select the size of the pot. If you plant or sow the seed in a wrong-sized, the growth will not be proper. And will die sooner or later.

2. Inadequate drainage system Except for a few, plants are unable to grow in the soil without any or adequate drainage. If the soil is clogged and there is no way for the water to flow, bacteria and fungus will grow and eventually kill the plants. Even if you water lightly, the water from the soil will not drain properly if the drainage is inadequate. To maintain proper drainage, you should have a drain hole at least the size of a nickel for smaller pots and several larger holes for larger pots. If not, then you can set a well-drained planted pot inside a larger pot without drainage.

3. Over-fertilization People running a nursery often commit a mistake of over-fertilization to grow the plants as soon as possible. But, the step is not right because applying fertilizers more than required is not good for both the plant and soil. It will deteriorate the plant quality. For the best result, you should use organic fertilizers. We know it’s difficult to get, but you have the option to buy organic fertilizer online for nursery. Buying an inorganic fertilizer will reduce the cost and show the result in less time but will not be fruitful in the long run. Lastly, before applying the fertilizer, get a soil health test done. Avoiding these 3 mistakes will help in the healthy growth of the plants and run your plant nursery business effectively and efficiently.
