Change the Locks, and Reprogram Your Garage Doors. Unless you’re buying a brand-new home from a builder, you need to have the locks changed. You don’t know who all has a key to your home, and that can be scary. Get your garage doors reprogrammed so they only work with the remotes you have. It’s possible someone out there got their hands on an extra garage remote at some point. Call locally owned A Better Garage Door to help you with this task (www.abettergaragedoorinc.com).
Set Up Utilities, Cable and Internet.
If you haven’t already, set up your cable and internet to transfer to your new home. Another option to consider is “cutting the cord”… No, this doesn’t mean living without WiFi or TV! FreeTVee, a local company, can help you cut your cable costs and utilize streaming for your needs (www.freetvee.com). You will also need to contact the local water, electric and gas companies to have services turned on or transferred to your name.

Set Up Your Home Security System.
Most homes these days come with a security system installed. However, it will not be active when you move in. You’ll need to contact a home security company to come out and get you set up.
Meet Your Neighbors.
It’s always good to get out and meet your neighbors. See who has kids your age, get inside information on the “hood” and make some friends. Your neighbors can also recommend great local services. They have lots of information on your new community and can also be a friendly extra set of eyes to on your house when you are away! Bonus!
Window Treatments.
More than likely your home did not come equipped with window treatments. For your privacy and to keep your neighbors from seeing something they shouldn’t, we suggest contacting an interior designer or blinds company to help you cover your windows in style. We recommend Parker company Herberts Workroom 101 (www.workroom101.com).
Understand How the Colorado Climate Can Impact Your Yard.
If you are new to Colorado, it’s important to understand how our altitude and overall climate affect many things. History
OF PARKER
According to popular legend, Parker can trace its colorful history to the establishment of the Pine Grove Way Station by Alfred Butters, around 1863. The first residents of the area were the ancients (prehistoric) including Plains-Woodland Indians and later (1800s) mostly Arapahoe, Cheyenne and Utes.
The old Indian trails that ran next to Cherry Creek near Parker were also used by early traders, trappers, frontiersmen and gold seekers, such as John Beck, Captain R.B. Marcy, William Green Russell, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Jim Baker, “Uncle Dick” Wootton, and Kit Carson.
The trail became known as the Cherokee Trail and a branch of Trapper’s Trail. When stage lines rolled into Colorado, it became known as the Smoky Hill Trail South, the West Cherry Creek Stage Road and the Denver-Santa Fe Stage Road.
RHODE ISLAND HOTEL 1908
This building now houses Fika Coffee House on Mainstreet.

Gold was discovered in Colorado in 1858, and the following year over 100,000 people followed the trails here in search of their fortunes. Small towns and settlements sprang up as the focus changed from gold to land.
To continue with the legend, the Longs moved the structure to its present location on Mainstreet, built an addition to include 10 rooms and a second-story ballroom, and added some other buildings to accommodate animals and wagons.
Since the structure was being situated about 20 miles from Denver City, the Longs named it 20-Mile House; it was a stage stop that provided meals, lodging and provisions. Although courthouse records bring the dates into question, historical accounts generally agree that George Long traded the 20-Mile House to Nelson and Susan Doud in 1869 for a span of mules.
Under Parker’s ownership, the 20-Mile House grew and prospered; a blacksmith shop with equipment to shoe oxen and a general mercantile store were added to the facilities. It became Pine Grove’s first post office on December 8, 1870.
When you arrive in the town of Parker, what you’ll see amid the rolling plains is a growing community of new shops, low buildings, new home communities and lots of open space. Parker has worked hard to keep its small-town flavor and atmosphere even though it’s currently one of the fastestgrowing cities in the United States. You can find homes with an amazing view of the Rockies, Downtown City Lights, or nestled in the Pines.
Parker’s very modest beginning came in 1860, when a one-room shack was moved from Pine Grove over to Cherry Creek to serve as a stage stop called, appropriately, the Twenty-Mile House. It was 20 miles from the origination point of the Butterfield stage, what today is the intersection of Colorado Boulevard and Colfax Avenue in bustling Denver. The humble little shack grew into a 10-room Inn, changed hands twice and finally became a major stopping point for the railroad in 1882 under the ownership of James Sample Parker.
What doesn’t show when you’re in Parker today are the scars that ravaged the area during the 1930s depression when the

bank was robbed, railroad tracks were washed out and low produce prices almost wiped out the small village.
Denver, 20 miles to the northwest, was getting crowded. Developers and planners wisely looked to this area and found a beautiful environment where the rural living could combine with modern-day necessities, where country pleasures would join with today’s desired amenities. Today, the Parker governmental agencies and residents are striving to ensure that this beautiful rural area is not spoiled by over-building and lack of planning. Beautiful walking and biking trails and equestrian facilities abound in the Parker vicinity.
Historic Franktown, located only seven miles south of Parker, was the original site of the Douglas County seat and the location of the first gold find in Colorado.

PARKER CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLHOUSE RESTORATION PROJECT
The Parker Consolidated Schoolhouse became a century old in 2015. For decades, The Schoolhouse served as the area’s only K-12 school. In recent years, it has been known as the Mainstreet Center and served as downtown Parker’s educational and cultural center. To honor the building’s heritage, the Town of Parker has rebranded the structure as “The Schoolhouse.”
Phase II construction, at a cost of $849,218, was completed in late fall 2016. It included replacement of the outdated and inefficient heating system with two hydronic boilers, creation of an enlarged dance studio in the lower level, the addition of an elevator shaft, window rehab, and exposing and restoring the beautiful wood trim and flooring throughout the lower level.

MMatt and Tanja met in Chiropractic School at National University of Health Sciences in Lombard, IL. Tanja was drawn to Matt’s fun, charismatic, and endearing personality. She loved running into him in the hallway and hearing his unique laugh; anyone that’s met Matt knows the laugh. “It’s the best laugh!”
They absolutely love serving the Parker community and opened a chiropractic office right here in Parker in 2010. It’s already been 12 wonderful years! They are grateful for all their patients – “they truly feel like family” – and are honored to serve and help their clients achieve their health needs. Patient care is top priority, and they strive to put their patients’ individual needs first!
Matt and Tanja are blessed with four beautiful children: Serj (12), Maks (11), Adrijana (8), and Olivia (8).
As a family, they enjoy being active, cooking, hiking, fishing, riding bikes, playing golf and tennis. You can find them playing tennis several days a week at The Parker Racquet Club as well as the Pinery Country Club. They also love to golf and hanging out with friends at the Black Bear Golf Club. All four kids enjoy workouts regularly at Pivitol Sports Performance, in Parker. Pat, the owner, is amazing and creates a fun environment for kids!
They often cook together as a family, however, when they want to change it up and order in, they love

Back To Wellness Chiropractic is growing! They have expanded their many services and added microneedling! Chiropractic, acupuncture, dry needling, col laser therapy have been the main services. The NEW microneedling facials assist in producing your own body’s collagen and elastin resulting in a natural approach to a youthful appearance. CASTLEWOOD CANYON
Castlewood Canyon State Park is a Colorado state park near Franktown, Colorado just south of Parker. The park protects a unique part of Colorado’s history (the Castlewood Canyon Dam).

LOCAL TIP

I really enjoy going to Parker Garage as they have a great selection of whiskey and make an exceptional Old Fashion.
- Mark P.

Nature lovers and groups enjoy environmental diversity on several hiking trails ranging from mild to moderate. The trails range from .5 to 4 miles and can be combined for longer journeys. The winding Cherry Creek flowing along the canyon floor provides wonderful rest stops. Pets, on a leash, are welcome on most trails, except the new East Canyon Preservation Area trail.
The natural amphitheater and the Bridge Canyon Overlook gazebo perched on the edge of the canyon are unique places for weddings or other outdoor ceremonies. Casual groups and families enjoy the picnic areas at both entrances. Remnants of geologic and local history combine when the then Castlewood Dam burst in 1933, sending a 15-foot-high wave of water into Denver. Ruins of the original ill-fated dam and the historic homestead still exist for hikers to see.
PARK HOURS
Castlewood Canyon is a day use park. Current park hours are from Sunrise to Sunset.
Sorry, there is no camping.
Inbound gates are closed one hour prior to park closure; both gates are locked, promptly, at Sunset.
East Canyon Trail is Closed
November 1 - May 1
Due to the fragile nature of this area the following regulations are strictly enforced: Visitors must remain on the designated trails.

PUBLIC ART
Discovery Park features the larger than life “Ball and Jacks” sculpture, which serves as a gateway to the east end of downtown Parker. The artist, Christopher Weed of Colorado Springs, says the sculpture, like the park itself, speaks to a simpler time of connection to friends, family and community.

SECORCARES
caring people caring for people.

When you think of poverty, do you think of Douglas County? Most people don’t, but the reality is that many Douglas County residents are struggling to put food on the table. As cost of living in our beautiful state continues to rise, the ability to afford it plummets. Life happens and that’s where SECORCares is there to help. SECORCares (formerly SECOR) is a non-profit organization located in Parker that serves the residents of Douglas, Arapahoe, and Elbert Counties who are faced with the often sudden and harsh realities of suburban poverty.
SECORCares offers a free food market where local residents are able to grocery shop for free. In addition to their free market, SECORCares offers multiple wrap-around services to their guests such as financial counseling, individual /family counseling, medical/dental aid and more, with the ultimate goal of helping their guests on the path to independence. Through their Community of Hope self-sufficiency program they support and empower guests as they reclaim their lives and get back on their feet. SECORCares serves roughly 15001700 families each month at their Parker location, and an additional 300 families monthly at their satellite locations in Aurora and Highlands Ranch. They provide

food for 900 elementary aged children and their families on the weekends through their Food for Thought weekend backpack program. SECORCares also has a mobile food market they can take into high-density housing locations and serve 100 families at a time. Essentially a grocery store on wheels, guests can shop the mobile market the same way they can in their brick and mortar location. As public transportation can be a challenge, this mobile market can get closer to the need and feed the people who need it the most! They are also ramping up a senior outreach program called SECOR Senior Cares in the coming months.
SECORCares is always looking for community partners interested in helping meet the needs of the community! They have several fundraising events this summer you can support like their charity Golf Scramble & Gala., Parker 1K, and the SECORCares Grape Stomp. You can find out more about these events and SECORCares by visiting their website at www.secorcares.com or email Amy at amy@secorcares.com

Mayor’s Holiday Lighting presented by Xfinity and Ent Credit Union
November 29th at 5:30pm

O’Brien Park, 10795 Victorian Dr. O’Brien Park comes alive for the holidays! Join the Town of Parker for an enchanted evening in O’Brien Park. Gather around the Town Tree, and join the Mayor and the Parker Chorale in a Sing-Along to Silent Night to kick off the event. Following Silent Night, the Mayor and Town Council will count down to the Town Tree and Grand Park Lighting. You will love the elegant look and feel as our Town Tree lights up, and the park sparkles in white elegance!
Once the park is lit up, it’s time for the fun to begin! Stroll around O’Brien Park, and take in the sights of the fun holiday ice-sculpture displays following a path to each of the six displays.
Along the way, you are bound to run into some holiday characters, all of whom will have some sort of story to tell or an activity to show you. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be in town for this festive evening, and you may even spot the “Elf in a Tree!” While you stroll through the park, you can enjoy tasty food from holiday food vendors.
The O’Brien Park Gazebo will also come to life with the sounds of the holidays as the Parker Chorale and our local high school choirs sing some of our favorite holiday carols. The Colorado School of Dance performers will also be at the event and will showcase one of their dances on stage as well. www.ParkerOnline.org/ MayorsHolidayLighting

LOCAL TIP

People move to Colorado to spend time in the 300+ days of sunshine and Parker offers so many wonderful opportunities for families to get outside. In addition to the parks and playgrounds (Bayou Gulch Park is my favorite), not to be missed popular events are Parker Days, Mainstreet Farmer’s Market and Discovery Park and PACE Center outdoor concerts, all in the summer months.
