Vancouver HISTORY OF

By Julia Hirsch

The history of America is encapsulated in the history of Vancouver. From beaver trading to shipyards, hydroelectricity to computer tech, our city’s abundant natural resources keep us in step with America’s technological revolutions.
The Chinook and Klickitat Indians were the first settlers along the mighty Columbia River and lived a life of plenty with salmon, berries and other plants from the surrounding forests. They traded upriver and were known for their dried fish, fur and canoes. Their first contact with Europeans occurred when Robert Gray’s ship, Columbia Rediviva, arrived in 1775, and Gray immediately named the river the Columbia, after his ship. The second British frigate arrived shortly thereafter, with Captain George Vancouver at its helm, and with the Europeans’ arrival began the rapid decline of the Indian nations because of the natives’ exposure to European diseases such as smallpox, measles and malaria.
Only a handful of Indians remained when famous explorers Lewis and Clark passed
through what is now Clark County in 1805 and 1806, but they were so enamored by the beauty of the area, they wrote that the region was “the only desired situation for settlement west of the Rockies.”
So, the settlers came. The territory was ruled by both the British and the United States at the time, so the British-owned Hudson’s Bay Company built Fort Vancouver in 1825, and began a successful fur-trading and timber business.
In 1846, the British signed the Oregon Treaty with the United States and established that the Washington Territory now belonged to the U.S. The Army arrived in Vancouver in 1849 and built Officer’s Row above the Hudson’s Bay Company’s Fort Vancouver. The City of Vancouver was incorporated on Jan. 23, 1857.

As the city grew, so did a diverse set of industries. Vancouver was dubbed the “Prune Capital of the World” in 1920. At its height, the industry shipped 10 million pounds of dried prunes all over the globe. In 1937, the opening of the Bonneville Dam brought cheap electricity to the area, and Alcoa built an aluminum plant, which produced the first aluminum west of the Mississippi. During WWII, Henry Kaiser built three shipyards in the area, with one in Vancouver, and produced more than 140 ships. Boise Cascade paper mill moved to the area, as well, and continued operating until 2006.
Times changed, and so did America’s industries. With high-tech companies competing for space along the West Coast, Vancouver’s affordable housing, open spaces and majestic scenery became a magnet for high-tech, service and medical industries, and with its

“Love to take my granddaughters to check out books at Fort Vancouver Library. They love how there is an area designed just for their age. I love how friendly and helpful the staff are. They always are helpful in so many ways. I also appreciate the fact that it is a free library.” – Joan D.
close proximity to Portland, Vancouver residents can easily commute to what is now dubbed as “Silicon Forest.”
With the new waterfront, the revitalization of downtown, exploding housing growth and an influx of young families, Vancouver is fast becoming a model city for the mid-21st century.

SMITH SMITHTHE FAMILY

IT’S ALWAYS GOOD TO GET A LOCAL’S POINT OF VIEW. KERRY AND JAMIE SMITH HAVE LIVED IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW, MOVING TO THE CAMAS/ WASHOUGAL AREA, AND ENJOYING ALL THE THINGS THAT VANCOUVER HAS TO OFFER.

FIRST TELL US ABOUT YOU TWO: Kerry and I have been married for almost 10 years and we have 3 wonderful kids, Hank (9), Rhett (7) and Grace (3). We actually met online and on our first date, Kerry brought me a bouquet of Dahlias from a u-cut farm in Washougal. We actually ended up buying that same farm and digging up the dahlias, we brought them to our property and planted them! We now run our own u-cut farm open to the public, and sell bunches at local shops in the area, including a must visit coffee shop, Carino Coffeehouse.
LOCAL TIP

“Top two wineries are Maryhill as they have a huge variety of wines ... something for every body, have a great menu, live music and on the river with outdoor seating on the Columbia river. We also like Burnt bridge; they a a bit more boutique, but good wines, have live music a lot and sister company, a place for excellent group cooking classes. They always sell out.” – Doug and Nicole K.
WHY DID YOU MOVE TO THE VANCOUVER AREA? Kerry came from Grass Valley, CA and when he drove the roads right outside Vancouver, in Camas/Washougal, he loved the windy roads and the northern California feel. It’s rural but it’s still close to the city. He bought our property 12 years ago and then we met shortly after that.
WHAT HAD YOU HEARD ABOUT VANCOUVER BEFORE YOU MOVED HERE? I had known about Vancouver because I grew up across the river in Portland. I love that it feels like we are in the country, but we are also close to really nice restaurants and fun places in the city. There is plenty to do on this side of the river and it’s beautiful!
WHAT HAS BEEN YOU BIGGEST SURPRISE ABOUT THE AREA? It’s crazy how fast it’s growing! In the last few years there has been so much growth, especially on 192nd. Even the Camas-Washougal waterfront is expanding and it’s so nice to have that on this side of the river. The Downtown Vancouver waterfront is also really beautiful. There are lots of new developments in the area which means it’s desirable for families!
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE THINGS TO DO HERE? Hike! Our family loves to hike and ride bikes. We ride a lot at the Washougal waterfront. We like hiking Beacon Rock and other local trails, like Cape Horn Trail and Lacamas Lake. There are a lot of great restaurants in Downtown Vancouver that are fun to check out. Our family likes Blue Door Bakery and exploring the Saturday market. We also love to visit Columbia Tech Center Park!

WHAT DO THE KIDS LIKE TO DO IN THE SUMMER? The kids love to go hiking, biking, and to go to the waterfront and local parks. They also really enjoy Dozer Days! We enjoy hiking the Round Lake trails and then continuing onto Lacamas Lake trail, it’s fun how they all connect. We also really enjoy Ashwood Taps and Trucks in Washougal because the backyard area is open to all ages, and your kids can safely play in a fun enclosed area.

WHAT ABOUT WHEN THE WEATHER ISN’T SO NICE? WHERE DO YOU TAKE THE KIDS? We take the kids to SkyZone and Big Al’s for family bowling. My kids also really enjoy laser tag and the Strike Zone Batting cages!
OK, NOW IT’S DATE NIGHT. WHERE DO YOU GO WITHOUT THE KIDS? We love Wildfin at the Vancouver waterfront. We almost always end our nights at Feast 316 in Camas to get their butter croissant bread pudding, it’s the perfect way to end any date night out! When we do a getaway without the kids, we love to stay at the Carson Hot Springs Resort, they have an amazing mineral therapy pool, and we get breakfast at their onsite restaurant in the morning. We also usually have dinner at Backwoods, it’s actually where we had our 2nd date!
WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE MOVING HERE? I don’t see any difference between here and Portland. We have high quality restaurants, access to nature with an urban feel. We really have a really good balance of both.

BIKING
TRAILS BIKING
By Julia Hirsch
BIKING IS A LARGE PART OF OUTDOOR LIFE IN CLARK COUNTY. ED FISCHER, OWNER OF CAMAS BIKE AND SPORT, GAVE US A LIST OF HIS FAVORITE TRAILS.
Columbia River Dike Trail: Located east of Washougal, this is an easy, flat trail which makes it kidfriendly as well. It follows the Columbia River from Steamboat Landing Park to the border of the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Enjoy views of the river. Approximately 4 miles.

For more detailed trail network info in the area, Ed suggests getting the app, Trail Forks. The app is a rider-owned GPS that lists networks of trails nationwide with descriptions and directions.
Lacamas Park: This is a combination of gravel trails and service roads with a bit of elevation but still entry-level in some areas for mountain bikers. Some trails require intermediate to advanced skill levels. A network of offshoot trails off the gravel path all add up to about 6 miles of trails. Very scenic with lots of wildlife. Ed recommends riding with caution along Heritage Trail because of the foot traffic.
Whipple Creek: Just west of Clark County Fairgrounds, Whipple Creek boasts 5 miles of trails. There is a gradual elevation through shallow gullies and woodland, but still entry-level for bikers. This trail caters to horseback riders as well. 17202 NW 21st Ave., Ridgefield.
Burnt Bridge Trail: An asphalt walking and biking trail in the center of Vancouver, 8 miles long. There are several entrances to the trail. Check the City of Vancouver website for directions.
Tarbell Trail: For a more advanced experience, check out Tarbell Trail in the Yacolt Burn Recreation area. There is a 25-mile loop highlighted by a remote stop at 80’ Hidden Falls. There is over 3000 feet of elevation gain and loss and is a strenuous rating. There are specific trail sections that are popular including Cold Creek, Trail 6, Thrillium (expert downhill-only trail) and Bells Mountain trail which extends all the way to Moulton Falls. For more details go to https/www.evergreenmtb.org/ trails/bells-mountain
In the future, you will be able to get turn-by-turn directions on the trails by going into Camas Bike and Sport and scanning Rides Spot, a Q-Sheet which you scan onto your phone.

It’s true; we do get a lot of rain in the Pac NW. Luckily, there are a few great indoor places where you can take the kids on rainy days. The Black Pearl A HISTORY OF MAKING MEMORIES
By Dylan Koller
Overlooking the Columbia River Gorge, the Black Pearl is the premiere venue for any special occasion. With two stories of floor to ceiling windows, guests marvel at the stunning view of Mount Hood while enjoying the social atmosphere of the Pearl’s open floor plan. Formerly the Parker House, this location’s roots run deep, as it has hosted some of your neighbor’s most memorable moments.
Originally established as Dolphin Restaurant, the property dates back to the 1950s. It was renamed in 1969 after David Parker, the 1840s settler, and became the Parker House. In 1973 it was purchased by Red Lion Inn and operated as their one and only non-lodging
property for years. Eventually, it changed hands again, and in 2004 was purchased by professional jockey, Victor Espinoza, who ran it as the Parker House until 2009 when he sold it to William “Bill” Sherertz.

In 1980, Bill built Barrett Business Services, Inc., a billion-dollar, publicly traded company from the ground up. When he purchased the Parker House, he promptly demolished the building with the intention of building a new restaurant, the Black Pearl, from the ground up. Bill’s vision was to build an establishment that maximized the already spectacular view and would act as a gathering place for the community to enjoy good food and wine.

Sadly, Bill passed away in 2011 and the restaurant was put on pause. The property sat empty and idle for years until Bill’s wife, Kim, and their children decided to turn the space into an event center in honor of him. After years of planning and hard work, the Black Pearl on the Columbia officially opened its doors in 2018.
Purposely conceptualized as a blank canvas, the venue allows for any theme or design and can cater to any occasion. While the panoramic views captivate its guests during the day, the Pearl offers fireplaces on both floors to create a dazzling ambiance long after the sun sets. To book this breathtaking, historic venue for your next event, visit the Black Pearl’s website, and continue its long-standing tradition of making memories.

FITNESS FOCUS
Top Tips to Build and Preserve Muscle
As we get older, we tend to lose muscle – approximately 7 pounds of lean tissue lost per decade with this loss accelerating after the age of 40. As a result, our strength and endurance are reduced, our metabolism drops resulting in weight gain, our bone density is lowered, our posture and alignment deteriorate, our balance falters, and we experience an increase in general aches and pains. So, it is absolutely critical that we do whatever we can to maintain our muscle tissue. Here are the top tips for preserving and building muscle:
▸ Strength Train – Commit to strength training at least 2-3 times per week. This is the most effective activity to build muscle.
▸ Lift Heavy – Heavier resistance and fewer reps is the preferred path to building muscle in comparison to lighter resistance and higher reps. Aim for 8-12 reps.
▸ Compound lifts – Perform exercises that are multi-joint movements that involve multiple muscles. Squats, lunges, rows, chest presses and overhead presses are staple movements that build muscle.
▸ Volume – In order to stimulate muscle, perform multiple sets per body part. Strive for a goal of at least 10 sets per body part per week. How many times per week you strength train will determine how many sets you need to perform at each lifting session.
▸ Protein – In order to build muscle, you need to consume adequate protein based on your goal, age, weight and gender. Ideally try to consume.5 to 1 gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight. For example, if your goal weight is 150 pounds, strive for 75-150 grams of protein per day.
▸ Frequent meals – Research indicates that eating more regularly throughout the day is a better approach for building muscle. Aim for 4 meals/ snacks per day with your protein equally allocated throughout the day.
▸ Hydrate – None of your bodily functions operate well in a dehydrated state including building muscle. Strive for half your ideal body weight in ounces of water per day.
