BALTIMORE

COUNTY’S

CROSSROADS

Perry Hall is sometimes considered “Baltimore County’s Crossroads.” Not only is Perry Hall at the junction of major highways that make it convenient to shopping and industry, but it’s been the epicenter of many historical changes over the past two centuries.

The Susquehannocks used present-day Joppa Road as a trail, and arrowheads have been discovered along the banks of the Great Gunpowder River. In 1608, Captain John Smith led an expedition up the river, which was deeper and more dangerous before it was tamed by the construction of the Loch Raven Reservoir.

Furnaces, forges, and mills dotted the landscape in the Eighteenth Century; visitors can visit nearby Jerusalem Mill Village to learn what life was like during the colonial period.

By 1775, a Baltimore merchant Harry Dorsey Gough had purchased more than 1,000 acres of land along the Great Gunpowder Falls. He completed construction of what became known as the Perry Hall Mansion, naming the plantation after a family estate near Birmingham in Great Britain. Gough and his wife sheltered early Methodists when their views were unpopular.

After the Civil War, the Perry Hall estate was carved up among dozens of immigrant families. “Germantown” was born—a bustling village centered near present-day Belair and Chapel Roads. Further south was the village

of “Indian Rock,” where a tollbooth was erected near what is today India Avenue.

The Twentieth Century brought nurseries, dairies, and orchards. After the Second World War, suburban development transformed Perry Hall. Berg’s dairy became the Seven Courts neighborhood. White Marsh Mall opened in 1981, and construction of the Honeygo neighborhood—a planned community—started around 1996.

Today, Perry Hall is a convenient, diverse community, with excellent schools and abundant parks.  We are glad to call you our neighbor.

LIVING IN

Green

long valley

“The hood” is my favorite place to live. After I was paralyzed, building a house for Habitat for Humanity, I was forced to give up my home in Kingsville and my business. By the grace of God, in 2002, I landed in this place of miracles, where I can wake up every day surrounded by hummingbirds, cardinals, eagles, blue jays, and on and on.

We have access to two wonderful wineries only minutes away: DeJon and Boordy. They both produce great wines and are fun music venues. We love to go to Manor Tavern, Inverness Brewery and Accapellas Dutch Market. I love being able to get to Wegmans within minutes as well. Fresh McKenzie farm is a place my grandchildren used to love to visit! They loved everything there, the horses, bonfires, chickens, pigs, goats, roosters, Easter eggs dropped from helicopters, October mazes, hayrides and much more.

This is a little piece of heaven. I have learned a lot about nature, peace and serenity. But the most important is the family I moved into. I have lived in many places in my life but this neighborhood, “the hood,” is something so special, it’s hard to believe. We are there for each other no matter what. We love each other truly. We eat together, cook for each other, and have shuffleboard tournaments with vicious desires to win, but laugh in the end. We take each other to doctors and help with snow and grass if needed. Comfort each other in any kind of need. We golf, fish, enjoy lots of wine, and actually every other kind of adult beverage. We laugh, we cry, and birthdays are special times here as well.

I totally enjoy “the hood” and the area. I don’t ever want to live anywhere else. There is something for everyone here just minutes from our doorsteps.

HOW TO H OST A Crab Feast

Grab your mallets. Check. Brown paper. Check. Old Bay Seasoning and a cold beer. Perfect!

You have not experienced Maryland until you have been to a traditional crab feast. Our family has always been known to use readyto-be-recycled newspapers, but whether you use brown paper or newspapers, the first step is to cover the entire area of a big table with paper. This sets the stage for the crab pile. (for the hot crabs to be dumped out on and ready to be devoured)

If you gather with a group of friends or family, it is generally ideal to order a large bushel (approximately 5-7 dozen, depending on the size of the crabs) and begin to get your hands dirty once those hot crabs get dumped out on the table! I suppose that’s why it’s called a crab “feast” and not a “dinner”, because the usual table manners go out the window and people dig right in and the only utensils tend to be a knife and a mallet.

There are many different ways to open up a crab, and believe me, from working in an Ocean City crabhouse for three summers during my college years, I have seen it all. It was very entertaining having to teach tourists visiting from out-of-state. They thought it was disgusting and ridiculously messy at first, but once they got rid of the shell and the gills, that crabmeat was a delicious treat. A tourist favorite was the all-you-caneat option. However, rather than being filled up, they often just got tired of working hard only to get small amounts in each bite, which is what would cause them to end their experience.

Some people choose to dip the crabmeat into melted butter or vinegar, but many just like to eat it plain so that the spicy taste of Old Bay can linger on your taste buds throughout the meal. Add a side of buttered corn on the cob since you already have your hands dirty too! Now – what to do when the feast ends? Take out your prized mallets and knives, fold up the paper from all sides, and roll up all of the picked-through shells into a garbage bag to make clean up quick and easy. That is the beauty of not using plates or silverware.

If you really do not want to do all of the work of picking, well then there is always the other option of ordering one of Maryland’s delicious crabcakes (little filling is ideal) where someone else has to do the work for you! There are so many amazing crabhouses in the local area that offer opportunities to pick crabs yourself or to order a crabcake sandwich or platter, and you certainly can’t go wrong with either option.

I am very proud to have grown up in the local area and to have had the opportunity to experience crab feasts with my family and now passing on the tradition to my kids (although when they were little, they would be happy just banging the mallet for entertainment or drawing pictures on the paper rather than eating). When I look at the engraved silver mallets that my parents have received at past weddings and often use at our crab feasts, that is just one sign that shows how much Marylanders take pride in our local blue crab.

And fortunately, trash day seems to fall on the day after we eat!

One of our newest play areas created to offer fun options for children who may not be able to use equipment at traditional parks, Angel Park is incredible! Children can enjoy swings and equipment designed for wheelchairs and special needs children. The park is also home to a variety of outdoor fitness equipment where families can get in a solid workout while playing. Go to angel-park.org to find family events including outdoor concerts in the summer.

LET’S GET

READING!

When you move to a new area with your family, one of the first things you need to do is find good playgrounds! If you have kids ages 5 or under, one of the best places around is Storyville.

Storyville is a play-and-learn center located inside the Rosedale branch of the Baltimore County Public Library. It’s a nice playground with a mini town inside. They have a grocery store, a theater, a construction zone, a doll house, a kitchen and a library for you to sit with your children and read a book. However, my favorite part of Storyville is a mini garden designed specifically for babies! It’s a closed area where you can let your children have fun without

worrying about if any of the toys are age-appropriate.

Storyville is a great place, especially for those rainy days or when it’s too hot outside. A good tip, if you’re going there on days like that, get there early. Storyville stops letting families in if there are too many people to prevent overcrowding. It can be hard waiting in line with kids, but once you get inside you can have a great time exploring the place as a family.

MAKE YOUR NEW HOME

smarter

Adding smart features to your home can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Smart features can help make your home more energy efficient, secure, and comfortable. There are a variety of options available, from simple upgrades to full-scale home automation systems. In this article, we'll discuss some of the most popular ways to upgrade your home with smart features.

One of the easiest things to upgrade is your lighting system. Smart light bulbs can be controlled from your phone or voice assistant, giving you the ability to dim the lights, change colors, and even set schedules for when the lights should turn on and off. You can also install smart switches to control your existing lamps or overhead lights, or even install motion sensors to automatically turn lights on and off when you enter a room.

Another area of your home that can be upgraded with smart features is your security system. Smart security systems will alert you when motion is detected or if someone is trying to access your home. Many systems also have the ability to detect smoke, water leaks, and carbon monoxide. You can also set up cameras to monitor your home from anywhere, whether you're at work or on vacation.

Your thermostat is another great way to upgrade your home with smart features. Smart thermostats can be controlled remotely, allowing you to adjust the temperature of your home from anywhere in the world. You can also set schedules or use geofencing to automatically adjust the temperature based on your location. Additionally, smart thermostats can help you save money by learning your heating and cooling habits and making adjustments to your energy usage.

Finally, you can upgrade your home with a home automation system. Home automation systems allow

you to control multiple devices in your home, such as lights, thermostats, security cameras, and more, all from one app or voice assistant. You can set up automation rules, such as turning off the lights when you leave the house, or setting the temperature to a specific level when you come home. Home automation systems can also help make your home more energy efficient by learning your habits and adjusting your energy usage accordingly.

Upgrading your home with smart features can be a fun and rewarding experience. From basic upgrades to full-scale home automation systems, there are a variety of options available to fit your needs and budget. We hope this article has helped you understand some of the most popular ways to upgrade your home with smart features.

“Moving into our new home was exciting, but we wanted to add some modern convenience to our everyday lives. Installing smart lights, a thermostat, and a security system was a game changer! Now, we control everything from our phones—whether it’s adjusting the temperature before we get home or checking the cameras while we’re away. It’s made life so much easier, and we feel safer too. I never realized how much a smart home could enhance our day-to-day comfort until we made the switch!” – Rebecca M.
