MILLS RIVER

MILLS RIVER GREAT GETAWAY:

BREWERY TOURS

SIERRA NEVADA BREWING CO.

In many ways, Sierra Nevada Brewery, located on lushly landscaped grounds near the Asheville airport, is as good as a destination resort. Established in 1979, with the mission to brew the highest-quality beer with the least environmental impact possible, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. has been reducing waste and reusing materials in creative and thoughtful ways ever since.

The brewery comes with 215 acres of land, mountain biking trails, patios, gardens, an amphitheater, an airy brewhouse, and a bustling taproom. It is evident in the attention to detail that the North Carolina brewery was a labor of love for the Sierra Nevada. Many have referred to it as the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory of breweries. For beer-lovers that are looking for an extraordinary experience that encompasses an interesting look into one of America’s best breweries, lively tasting and delicious culinary experiences in a beautiful setting, the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Mills River, NC, is a must-visit.

There is something here for everyone. I enjoy beer, but by no means am I an expert. My wife, however, has a vast knowledge of beers (she has been to over 200 breweries). To her, Sierra Nevada Brewery was the equivalent of Disney World — the Malt Disney World.

SIERRA NEVADA

We loved the conservation efforts, scenery and friendly staff. Whether you are a single person, a couple, or a whole family, you could easily spend a leisurely afternoon here. The attention to detail and taste is evident from the beautifully landscaped entranceway to the brewing of the beer; it’s almost as if the beer is poured from the line it’s so fresh.

After walking the grounds we built up an appetite so we went to the Taproom for a meal. The food is out of this world. We enjoyed the duck fries, empanadas, summer veggie pizza, and, of course, pretzels with pimento cheese. Everything we experienced on this visit was so much more than we expected.

Our one piece of advice: Before you go, check their special events schedule, because you may want to participate in one of their many outdoor concerts and music festivals. Other than that, always take the scenic route; it’s a big world out there – go explore it.

Whether You Are A Single Person, A Couple, Or A Whole Family, You Could Easily Spend A Leisurely Afternoon Here.

HOWTOHOSTA

TAILGATE

Tailgating is one of the best things about sporting events. It is a time for friends and family to get together and enjoy cheering on their favorite team. While preparing for the game, you’ll want to be sure your team is well represented at your tailgate, whether you yell “Go Tigers,” hang your team’s flag, or dress everything up in orange and purple to personalize your tailgate. Make sure you buy more than enough food; you never know who just might happen to show up at your tailgate. No tailgate can be complete without some sweets to accompany the grilled goodness and snacks.

Some rules and regulations you should know tailgating at Clemson sporting events:

No parking in areas not designated as football parking areas.

4 5 6 2 3 1

Follow the instructions of all parking attendants. Parkas directed to ensure that all space is used efficiently. Saving space(s) is not allowed

Trailers/cookers/tents must be confined to your parking space. Each placard holds a space 9 feet wide by 23 feet long. Any items that prohibit the complete use of a parking area will be prohibited.

Golf carts, mopeds, motorcycles, and scooters are prohibited inside the interior of Clemson’s parking areas unless they have the proper credentials. Golf cart passes are issued to university vehicles, vendors and working staff; these are not for sale or general distribution.

Tailgating and tents are restricted to the space behind each vehicle. Drive aisles must be kept clear or cleared when another fan is trying to access their assigned space. Tailgating items are to be stored and out of the drive aisles when you enter the game. CUAD is not responsible for stolen items, so please store, hide and lock all valuables in your car.

Bands, large speakers or PA equipment that disturbs others is not allowed.

Solicitations of any kind are prohibited. Items will be confiscated, and you will be removed from the campus.

ROSCOE & LAILA ROSCOE & LAILA

TWO BOXERS LOVING ALL THE AREA HAS TO OFFER

If you have four legs and love to play, I know some of the best places to go. Have you ever heard of the Dikes on Clemson’s campus? There are acres of open fields to run and play with my furry friends. In the summertime when the weather is warm, we love to run over and down the hill to the lake. The people here are so friendly; they always give us treats and rub our bellies. It’s a cool town; everyone always dresses up in orange and yells “Go Tigers.”

My furry friends and I love to go for car rides up the scenic highway to the mountains where we occasionally see our bear friends along the trails, sticking our heads out the window experiencing the wind blowing through our ears, smelling the crisp apples in the air and seeing whitetail deer in the woods along the way home.

My furry friends and I love to visit downtown Anderson and go shopping around the area. Many shops allow us to come in, whether we are trying on new collars and leashes or our owners are buying a fashion item for themselves. Leaving the stores, there are so many drool-worthy smells every street we walk down with all the restaurants in the area.

Every season out of the year brings my furry friends and me joy. There is always something for us to do, whether we are going out or staying in. We want to bark; welcome to the tri-county area! If you and your owner explore one of our favorite spots, we would love to come up and give you a paw.

BBQ

THE BEST BBQ

IN T O W N

What Makes Little ol’ South Carolina A Heavyweight Contender in the Eternal Competition Over Which State Has the Best Barbecue in the U.S.?

Living in South Carolina, you eat barbecue with the people who know the most about it and have the longest history of preparing it. We’re talking authentic barbecue — good, tender, juicy, smoke-filled pieces of meat, prepared on pits that can each cook up to 2,300 pounds at a time, smothered in your choice of four different sauces: mustard, vinegar and pepper, light tomato and heavy tomato. The sauces are sometimes mopped on during the cooking process or can be served on the side, a subject of much debate among barbecue pit-masters.

Sauces are like religion, politics and college sports in the South; everyone has a stated and unbreakable opinion. It’s the sauce that determines what kind of barbecue you’re eating in the Palmetto State. When we say “barbecue” around here, we’re always talking about pork. Beef, chicken and other critters can be barbecued, grilled or cooked with or without sauce, but only pork – most often pulled pork cooked in a smoky pit – is barbecue.

More often than not, South Carolina barbecue restaurants are a family affair. Some are second- and third-generation owned, others are named in memory of family members or built as the realization of a parent’s dream. The stories behind South Carolina’s barbecue restaurants are nearly as flavorful as the food itself. Folks come to South Carolina’s barbecue restaurants for more than just a meal, but a true Southern experience.

Here are seven surefire ways to taste true barbecue in Upstate South Carolina; all you have to do is make your way to the table.

Little Pigs BBQ

One can never say you don’t get enough food at Little Pigs. They serve heaping helpings of delicious meat, cooked to the point of tenderness when it falls off the bone, either shredded or chopped and served with or without the buns.

1401 N. Main St., Anderson, SC; 864-226-7388

261 Market St., Seneca, SC; 864-885-1133

Heavenly Hogs BBQ

Appropriately named for the heavenly flavor of the pulled pork and ribs, served alongside options like chicken strips and burgers to satisfy any palate.

1328 S. Walnut St., Seneca, SC; 864-710-4394

Brasstown Creek Gathering Place BBQ

The simple fact is that people LOVE Brasstown Creek Gathering Place BBQ. There are good restaurants, homey restaurants, and then there are places like this one, where owners and family pour their heart and soul into the entire operation. Great BBQ in a beautiful, family-friendly setting.

275 Brasstown Rd., Westminster, SC; 864-647-2458

The Smokin’ Pig

The Smokin’ Pig Restaurants have four very unique locations in Pendleton, Easley, Anderson and Williamston, each featuring a menu of barbecued ribs, brisket and pork platters in a shack-like atmosphere. The walls and thick wooden tables are scribed with thousands of signatures of who was there last; like scribbles of namesakes of who someone loved back in high school.

6630 Clemson Blvd., Pendleton, SC; 864-646-5150

701 S. Pendleton St., Easley, SC; 864-442-5074

The Pompous Pig

Fine meats smoked to loving perfection; sides prepared like Momma used to make; sauces are the real deal, especially the mustard sauce; Southern sweet tea like it’s supposed to be made; and outstanding service by staff.

3320 N. Main St., Anderson, SC; 864-231-7447

Creekside Bar-Be-Que

The dishes are overflowing with flavor. Bring a healthy appetite – just for the sides. The portions could be a meal in itself. This is a true BBQ restaurant. The smoker outback is always working hard.

1115 Salem Church Rd., Anderson, SC; 864-260-9093

Circle M Barbecue

At Circle M BBQ in Liberty, pit-master Marion Martin, the Picasso of Pork, smokes whole pigs, only using hickory wood coals in the 12- to 24-hour cooking process. This pit BBQ brings to the table a taste unlike any other. In addition to the hand-pulled BBQ pork, they offer smoked ribs and chicken.

345 Martin Sausage Rd., Liberty, SC; 864-375-9133

1696 Evergreen Rd., Anderson, SC; 864-841-2323

720 Anderson Dr., Williamston, SC; 864-841-2323

IN THE TRI-COUNTY AREA, LAKE LIFE IS A WAY OF LIFE!

LAKE JOCASSEE

Jocassee is a gem. Its pristine waters can be enjoyed via state parks or boat tours.

The Jocassee Gorges was recently named one of “50 of the World’s Last Great Places — Destinations of a Lifetime” in a special edition of National Geographic magazine.

Do you have children or grandchildren interested in learning to kayak? Let them learn basic strokes and maneuvers, how to safely get in and out of a kayak on land and in open water, and correct paddling posture for a fatigue-free morning of paddling on beautiful Lake Jocassee.

From Canebrake Access to Laurel Falls Access on Lake Jocassee, this popular day hike trail segment contains both steep ascents and descents, as well as spectacular views of Lake Jocassee. Most groups complete this hike in from three and a half to four hours. There is one quite steep ascent, which leads to the best views of Lake Jocassee. Hikers call it “Heartbreak Ridge.”

LAKE KEOWEE

Keowee can satisfy your need for adventure. Paddleboard and kayak rentals are available on Lake Keowee, allowing for true family time, great exercise and enjoying the outdoors. Keowee-Toxaway State Park has access areas for kayaking or paddleboarding, and designated boat ramps can be found nearby. High Falls and South Cove County Parks, on the shores of Lake Keowee, have an endless variety of lake-centered activities, including lakeside camping and boat access on a deep-blue body of water that’s legendary for fishing and recreation.

LAKE HARTWELL

Hartwell is a perfect lake for kayaking, boating, fishing, and more. You can catch fish at just about any time of year at Lake Hartwell, but spring and early summer are generally the most productive. If you’re looking for an entry point to Lake Hartwell, then Lake Hartwell State Park is a perfect place to start.

The staff at the marina is very helpful and courteous. We rented an eightperson motor boat one day, and the next day we rented a pontoon boat for tubing during our vacation on Lake Hartwell. Both boats were clean and in excellent condition. We would highly recommend using Clemson Marina for your boat rental needs.” – Jessica Y.
