on the COVER Fabyan Windmill
Provided by Kane County Forest Preserve
On the east side of Fabyan Forest Preserve, stands the majestic Fabyan Windmill. The Fabyan Windmill is an authentic, working Dutch windmill dating from the 1850’s located in Geneva, IL. The Fabyan Forest Preserve was once part of the large country estate of George and Nelle Fabyan who came to the Fox River Valley in the early 1900s. After their deaths, the Forest Preserve District of Kane County purchased the estate for this amazing preserve.
The 68-foot, 5-story structure was originally built by Louis Blackhaus, a German craftsman, between 1850 and 1860. After many years, the Windmill had fallen into disrepair. Third-generation Dutch Windmill Maker Lucas Verbij was contracted by the Forest Preserve District to tackle the tough job of restoring the Windmill. He was discovered by Preservation Partners of Fox Valley, who oversees care and provides tours of the historic preserve.
According to Verbij, “The Fabyan Windmill is the best example of an authentic Dutch windmill in the United States. Restoring Fabyan Windmill is as much honor as it is duty. There is German, Swedish and Dutch millwright work on this Windmill. It is one of the few in the world that is restored to operate by natural wind energy.”
Roman numeral markings carved into the beams used in original reconstruction are still visible. Inside the mill, the beams and shafts are of cypress wood and trimmed with black walnut. New wooden gears were made. At the top of the mill is a huge cogged wheel turned by wind blowing against the vanes. The vanes are covered with canvas sails to help catch the wind. The moving cog rotates a shaft running the height of the mill.
You can learn how the windmill operates by taking a tour, available during weekends from 1-4 p.m., May 15 - October 15. Private tours are available by appointment. Call 630-232-5980

LOCAL

“One of the best enjoyments in the Fox Valley area is the access to the prairie/river path which connects adjoining towns. We head downtown Batavia to El Sazon to enjoy a fresh margarita and hop on the prairie path to St. Charles to finish at Kimmers Ice Cream Shop. Make sure to enjoy the scenery along the way!”

IT’S A
dog’s dog’s

life
By John Webb, Batavia resident and owner of Just for Paws
More than ever, pets, and dogs especially, have become an integral part of the modern-day family. Gone are the days of dogs living outside in old, rickety dog houses. Instead, our furry friends are being pampered, doted on, and are now downright spoiled. In fact, new home builds are now being designed with dogs in mind with features such as in-home spas, doggy doors, and dog-centric play areas. As we continue to treat our dogs more and more like the family members they have become, we are also figuring out different ways to spend more time with our canine companions outside of the house.
The Tri-Cities area is home to a vast array of dog-friendly restaurants, parks, trails and stores. Whether you are an outdoors person, or you like to shop the local boutiques and restaurants, you will be amazed at how many of these places will let you bring your pooch with you.
For those hikers and walkers out there, the Illinois Prairie Path is a wonderful option. Whether you start in St. Charles, Geneva, or Batavia, the prairie path will connect you to the entire Tri-City area. Pack a lunch and take a stroll along the Fox River with your pup, but watch out for the geese that like to patrol the area!
If you are more into relaxing with your pup on a patio enjoying a cold brew, there are plenty of dog-friendly dining options in the area. Some of our favorite spots include the Gammon Coach House in Batavia, The Filling Station in St. Charles or the new Main Street area of Batavia. Niche in Geneva also welcomes dogs and has a nice patio in back of their restaurant. Try their warm pretzels with bacon jam if you think your pup can resist eating them!

LOCAL TIP

“I love Red Oaks Nature Center! It’s a beautiful forested area, perfect for a peaceful walk with your dog or even a quick little lunch break.” – Ryan J.
Want to shop with your pup? Check out Geneva Commons, St. Charles Hardware, or your local pet boutiques, such as Just for Paws in west St. Charles or Cado & Company in Batavia.
With dogs becoming more welcomed in places of business and common areas, there are some simple rules to follow when bringing your dog out and about with you: First, make sure you
have a proper leash and collar setup. Six-foot leashes work best as they limit the amount of space your pup will occupy. Second, make sure you have extra waste bags on hand. It is always embarrassing when you are not prepared for your dog to do their business in public! Lastly, respect other people’s space. Even though your pooch may be very well-behaved, we must respect the space of those around us.
The trend towards dog-friendly everything is on the rise. Whether it is restaurants, breweries, hotels, retail stores, or even some hospitals, it seems everywhere we go these days, dogs are welcome with open arms. As avid dog owners and residents of the Tri-Cities area, we are lucky to have access to such a dog-friendly area. You should make it your goal to try to visit as many of these fourlegged fan favorites!

Anyone who has ever experienced the loss of a pet knows the pervasive sense of grief that never fully goes away. While treasured pets may leave a hole in our hearts, they no longer have to leave a hole in our lives. Bring an ID tag memorializing your beloved pet to place on the sculpture and help grow its coat of many colors, as this unique sculpture becomes a year-round destination for healing and celebrating the role pets play in our lives.

As the mom of four children, I certainly have been through many of the sports leagues in the Tri-Cities, and there are a ton of options for young athletes at every level. One of our favorites in the area is the i9 Sports league. They offer a variety of sports from the age of 3 all the way through high school and are one of the most family-friendly leagues we’ve experienced. The volunteer parent coaches provide age-appropriate instruction that’s fun for kids and also great for busy families. In most cases, there is one hour of practice, immediately followed by an hour-long game. Done and done! We love that i9 teaches and focuses on sportsmanship values alongside skills and drills every week. Multi-family, celebratory, post-game meals are highly recommended!

Whiskey Bend
1896, the trolley system that linked St. Charles, Geneva, Batavia, Aurora, and Elgin began to offer service to local citizens. At the last turn, conductors would stop the trolley and allow passengers to disembark for a quick drink to warm up during the winter months. This became known as Whiskey Bend. Now it’s an American gastropub with an extensive menu filled with shareables, sammies, house specialties, and house craft cocktails.

RETAIL THERAPY
A SHOP FOR EVERY PASSION
By Local Fashionista Diane Shearon

The Tri-Cities offers many shopping options, but Third Street in Geneva is a favorite in our area. There are so many quaint shops, delicious dining options and sweet treats, making it a great place to spend an afternoon or evening.
There is truly something for everyone on Third Street. Whether you are youthful in age or in heart, you will enjoy all that this little street has to offer. Some of my favorites include Odalisque Beauty Apothecary for makeup with clean ingredients and personalized service; Flair on 3rd, where I tend to go for gifts but always find something for myself; and The Little Traveler, which has many rooms throughout the store all offering different merchandise – it’s really a destination for all that visit Geneva.

River
Home
LIKE HISTORY, A RIVER IS EVER-FLOWING, EVER-CHANGING, AND FOREVER GIVING US NEW PERSPECTIVES ON THE WORLD AROUND US. THE FOX RIVER OF OUR ILLUSTRIOUS VALLEY IS CERTAINLY NO DIFFERENT.
The Fox River, which has surged from Waukesha County, Wisconsin, to the Illinois River for centuries, is the reason why so many people flocked to this area in the 1830s. It drains about 2,600 square miles of land. Below the Fox Lakes, the river widens and gathers momentum. That momentum is constrained by the numerous dams it flows over as it passes through Kane County. Below the Yorkville dam, the river widens and the current becomes swifter. In all, the river drops 470 feet in elevation. Its riverbed of shale, limestone, and dolomite is covered by fertile loam

soils – another incentive for incoming settlers during the early 19th century.
When St. Charles founder Evan Shelby arrived in the Fox River Valley in the fall of 1833, after many Native American tribes had already settled here, it exceeded his wildest expectations. Along the river was high timbered land for building, and the swift, flowing waters provided great potential for waterpower. The rolling hills surrounding the river were russet and gold and alive with game. Significant native vegetation still thrives along its banks, particularly in the many forest preserves found along its way. Excellent examples of native grasses, shrubs, and hardwoods still exist. Opossum, raccoon, red fox, and white-tailed deer are also still prominent in the area. The Fox River valley sees many waterfowl, including Canadian geese, mallards, small-mouth bass, white bass, channel catfish, bullheads, walleye, crappie, carp, northern pike, blue gill, and muskies.

Evan Shelby selected a tract of land on the east side of the river, about where Baker Memorial Church in St. Charles is now located, and he drove stakes and blazed trees to mark the boundaries of his claimed land. The year following his claim, many settlers from the east coast traveled to the Fox Valley Area to settle and restart their lives on the frontier.
Before the people from the East Coast settled here, the Fox River was home to many Native Tribes, including the Potawatomi. For centuries they called the Fox River Valley their home largely due to the resources of the river. However, in 1833, they were forced to move out of the area to make way for the East Coast settlers as mandated by the government. Many of the Potawatomi went north to Southern Wisconsin, while others made their way to Oklahoma to the Osage Reservation. They attempted to settle in Missouri but were unfortunately forced out there as well.
Kane County’s reach of the Fox extends about 35 miles over as many as 11 dams. The river’s elevation drops 160 feet from the northern boundary of the county to the southern. In an environment where

more and more open space and natural recreational amenities succumb to urban development, the Fox River also becomes an increasingly valuable asset as society offers more leisure time. Scenic and recreational activities such as water sports, biking, walking, fishing and outdoor recreation have become much a part of life along the Fox River.
In the early days before refrigeration technology, the Fox River provided economical value because it was ideal for ice harvesting. There were several ice houses located north of St. Charles near Ferson Creek. These houses would be insulated with packed sawdust and used to house blocks of newly harvested ice. This enabled dairy farmers to ship their product safely to Chicago without spoilage. This feature of the Fox River certainly made this area ideal for dairy farming, in addition to the rich soil of northern Illinois. On display at the St. Charles History Museum is a large saw that was used to harvest ice on the Fox River, as well as some ice block tongs.
From St. Charles to the Black Hawk Forest Preserve, the Fox is predominantly wooded and wide. Large attractive homes dot the banks and can be seen tucked among the trees. Several shale outcroppings and a hidden waterfall can also be spotted. Jones Woods and Ferson Creek Fen are excellent examples of naturalist areas and serve as a gateway to the more densely populated areas of St. Charles.
Long ago, the dam in downtown St. Charles impounded water for many mills located on or near the river, including the current sites of both the art-moderne Municipal Building and the Spanish-revival Hotel Baker. Below this dam are a series of bridges, including Main Street Bridge, mark the waterway as it winds its way toward historic Geneva and Batavia.
At the current location of the St. Charles Municipal Building, the Stewart Brothers Flour Mill tragically burned down in April 1915. The City’s fire alarm sounded to alert volunteer firefighters to a massive fire
that broke out in the mill. Within minutes, the building was a raging inferno. The fires raged so hot that the fire melted windows in surrounding buildings, and firefighters had to shield themselves behind protective barricades. By later that morning, the whole front facade of the mill had fallen into the street below, and winds out of the north had blown embers across the street that severely damaged the Osgood block across the street, and four buildings had to be torn down. The Fox River has certainly born witness to beauty as well as tragedy.

Sierra Club. Through their diligence and efforts, the Fox River is now a “Class C” river, which means its water quality to fish is “fair.”

As late as 1914 it had become evident the river was a depository for human and industrial waste. Sawmills, grain mills, paper mills, and limestone quarries had drawn on the river for their resources and then deposited wastes back into the water. There was a push to clean the waterway in the 1970s under the Clean Water Act, which was initiated by the Illinois EPA and the
PARK,
Now, the Fox River has not only improved significantly in water quality, but it continues to provide so much to the people who live in the area and those who come to visit. From Pottawatomie Park, to the bike path in downtown Geneva, to the Batavia Depot Museum and beyond, the Fox River has graced Kane County with its beauty and its versatility for centuries.
Currently, in the 2020s, you can find so much to do along the river. Whether you’re looking for the perfect home, the best spot to photograph bald eagles, or to simply sit along the shores on a park bench. There is an energy that hums in the Fox Valley that excites people and attracts them from all over the world. That is due largely in part to the majestic Fox River that ripples and shimmers through Kane County. The Fox River has always flowed alongside history, intertwining with the unique and rich stories that emanate from the communities along its shores. FROM POTTAWATOMIE

FUN FACT
The Arcada (Spanish for “arcade”) is a historic 1926 Venetian-Spanish theme theatre inspired by the travels of St. Charles native Lester J. Norris. Norris traveled to Florida and studied Spanish-influenced architecture and brought his vision back to St. Charles to build this theatre. With seating for 1,000, the Arcada held many soldout shows, drawing theatre-goers from Chicago and even New York. Today the Arcada holds 200+ movie showings and concerts each year, making it the number-one live-music venue in the Midwest.
