HELLO , NEW HOMEOWNERS

Welcome to the South Shore!

Congratulations on your new home and welcome to the South Shore! You’ve chosen a beautiful and relaxing, yet exciting place to live. Why do we love the South Shore? Many reasons... First of all, we’re almost always on the water! Secondly, we’re a close commute to Boston and an easy visit to Cape Cod and the Islands. Whether you surf, ski, or hike you’ll find it all close by as you dive into this guide of things to do and places to go. We asked for ideas and suggestions from our friends and culled the favorites of the South Shore natives and locals who know best!

The South Shore of Massachusetts is a geographic region stretching south and east from Boston along the shore of Massachusetts Bay toward Cape Cod. It includes cities and towns in Norfolk and Plymouth counties. You may have heard people call the South Shore the Irish Riviera – hanging orange and green flags fly from homes with pride – as the region is filled with Roman Catholic churches and schools, Irish dance schools, Irish pubs, restaurants, and bakeries. You’ll find all sorts of culture and cuisine here, though, as local chefs constantly exceed our expectations - from seaside shacks to finer dining – the South Shore’s food scene is exploding.

Be Local was developed to give you the insider’s perspective into everything that the South Shore has to offer. These pages reveal our favorite restaurants, shopping, best coffee shops, dog parks, and more as well as handy tips from local residents in Plymouth, Kingston, Duxbury, Marshfield, Pembroke, Hanover, Norwell, Scituate, Cohasset & Hingham!

For now, sit back, relax, read BeLocal, and enjoy all the South Shore offers.

Welcome to the South Shore,

Lawson’s Tower

According to pop culture, we’ve been flirting with the possibility of zombie apocalypse for awhile now. Fortunately for believers on the South Shore, we have Scituate’s Lawson Tower, designated on various zombie-obsessed sites as one of the top locations to ride out such a disaster. Phew! Another great reason you moved here!

SCITUATE

The natives called it Satuit, or cold brook, but earned itself the nickname, “The Irish Riviera,” since upwardly mobile Irish Catholics began uprooting from Boston’s “Southie” neighborhood, to reside on the picturesque seacoast. Earlier settlers would emigrate further south to found another Scituate — in Rhode Island. Though a healthy town pier still harbors a working fishing fleet and fishing was always significant to the town’s history and economy (eight fishermen

are storied to have frozen to a crowd of onlookers after their clinging to their ship after it grounded off Third Cliff), it was the harvesting of sea moss that became of most value to Scituate, an opportunity seized and built by the first incoming Irishmen. The town maintains its historic lighthouses — sisters inhabiting the Old Scituate Light played a role in deterring invasion during the War of 1812 — and beholds stunning, and clearly strategic, landscapes in its jutting First, Second, Third, and Fourth Cliffs, the latter once a military

Jacob’s Farmhouse, Norwell

NORWELL

Originally South Satuit, eventually Scituate, made up what we know now as Norwell, renamed only in 1888 after Henry Norwell, a merchant who used his good fortune in dry goods to improve the town’s roadways. Its southern border runs entirely along the North River and encouraged prolific shipbuilding — the first whalers, schooners, and frigates were produced. The surname Jacob was of great importance as Nicholas Jacob, along with Samuel Lincoln (ancestral grandfather to abolitionist and president Lincoln) first sailed from Hingham, Norfolk England to settle the area, their descendants maintaining similar power and influence in the area through governance, as militiamen,  merchants, builders, and physicians. Today, the Norwell Village Area Historic District remains central to Norwell’s commitment to preservation; Beautiful homes like the Jacob Collamore Homestead overlook the town common abutting conservation land and nature trails. The town’s rolling hills and stone walls maintain the bucolic charm reminiscent of its strong agricultural past.

Luddam’s Ford Park, Hanover

reservation during WWII and now a recreational Air Force Base. Scituate nods to its history naming its portion of 3A after Chief Justice Cushing, one of the town’s founders and one of the original six justices of the U.S. Supreme Court. Residents congregate annually at the waterfront for Heritage Days on the harbor. While the area lands regularly in the news for storm-related damage, The William-Barker House still stands nearby, a source of great pride as one of the few survivors of the destruction wrought in 1676 during King Philips War.

FUN FACT

The professional middleweight boxer known as Marvelous Marvin Hagler once owned a sports store in Hanover and called the town home.

HANOVER

Another offshoot of Scituate, Hanover was formed in the westernmost part, where a farmer named William Barstow built a bridge crossing the North River. Like its neighbors, the small town would rely on farming, mills, and shipbuilding along the North River. Known to have lived in Hanover while he finished an autobiography, George Washington Carver was ahead of his time studying sustainable farming and healthy soil techniques long before today’s organic farmers began to debate the importance. The town maintains open space and small-town charm, with historic and residential colonial homes lovingly preserved.

PEMBROKE

Pembroke earned its name in 1712 after Pembroke, Wales. Its current acreage borrowed land Scituate, Marshfield, and Duxbury. Prior, it was known as Matakeesett, Wampanoag for “worn-out planting lands” and a derivative of Namassakeesett, or “place of much fish,” as the town lies along the Herring Brook and other plentiful ponds and rivers which hosted the original annual herring run — the yearly upstream migration of river herring. These historically large migrations of fish into the town’s freshwater streams, rivers, and ponds once supported Native Americans, Pilgrims, and colonists. Today, the event is best viewed at Herring Run Historical Park, then celebrated at the Grand Ole Fish Fry, a fundraiser for the town’s historical society. The town’s resources drove its industry: Ponds and streams powered mills, iron was dredged to build the industrious Pembroke Iron Works, and ice from ponds was cut and stored for food preservation. Woodlands provided the lumber to grow and sustain five shipyards along the North River (the Brick Kiln Yard built the Beaver, used in the Boston Tea Party). Its human resources were no less worthy, residents served after Paul Revere’s first alarm until the war’s end and earned the town a reputation of patriotism.

FUN FACT

Vacationers sought out Pembroke as a haven for summer recreation and relief from the city. Cottages popped up then, and remain today, around the town’s plentiful ponds such as Oldham Pond, which offers nearly 300 yards of beachfront. On Little Sandy Pond, in what’s known as Bryantville, sprang an amusement park accessible by railway through the area’s majestic pines. Revelers enjoyed an open air dance hall, a Japanese rolling ball and game room, a penny arcade, a merry-go-round, and booths selling novelties, popcorn and peanuts. An open-air rifle gallery, theater, bandstand, and hotel as well as Sunday ox barbecues and clam bakes kept The Mayflower Grove operating from 1900-1940.

MARSHFIELD

Daniel Webster’s name graces his former estate and one of the elementary schools as well as the Mass Audubon’s Wildlife Sanctuary. The distinguished statesman - first a congressman, then a senator until his death - made his home in Marshfield, eventually dying here after falling from his horse and suffering a blow to the head. Known for his oration, Webster never attained the presidency, but served as Secretary of State under Fillmore until his untimely accident in 1852.

Upon the area’s early settlement centuries prior, relations of Governor Edward Winslow’s settled the town and kept a close alliance with the Wampanoags. Evidence shows deep native roots dating back thousands of years — old tools and weapons can still be uncovered at lesser known battle sites around town. Clashes ensued once their new chief, or Sachem, suspiciously died after a visit to Governor Josiah Winslow’s. King Philip’s War brought more death and destruction along the South Shore and further

diminished the strength of the original Wampanoags. Fast forward to the American Revolution, and Marshfield would become a haven for aristocrats, known as the most loyalist town in New England. The majority of British allies would eventually come under attack in 1775, fleeing aboard ships off Brant Rock to Boston.

The Esplanade along the famous getaway has come a long way from siege, and today serves restaurants, beach bars, and both year-round and summer folk. The busy town gained the moniker Marsh Vegas at some point - some say the nickname is rooted in commercialization, others blame former gambling houses - and has offered the scenes for various Hollywood films over the years. The seawall leading to Brant Rock offers generous panoramas of the Atlantic and epic moon rises, while expansive views of the salt marshes leading into the winding roads of Marshfield Hills earn the town its given name and round out its gracious beauty.

DUXBURY KINGSTON

To Plymouth’s north, towns began incorporating soon after its original settlement, with farming as their main endeavor. Myles Standish, William Brewster, and John Alden were the trifecta of influence during Duxbury’s original English settlement — named Duxborough after Standish’s family estate in Northern England. They opposed the British vigorously and would eventually join forces with neighboring patriots to force the loyalists of Marshfield out — perhaps the beginning of a standing rivalry between the neighboring towns which persists today. Their football teams meet every Thanksgiving and the anticipated faceoff broadcast from Marshfield’s local station, 95.9 WATD.

Following the American Revolution, Ezra Wrestin II gave a boon to the economy as Duxbury’s premier builder of schooners, sloops, chigs, and ships. Builders themselves were housed in the many captain’s homes that overlook the bay, making Washington Street the storied center of town, still a hub for maritime activity defining the town’s character today. The wealthy and powerful merchant fleet owner would be called King Caesar for his ambition and dominance; his federal style home, The King Caesar House, remains as a museum run by the Duxbury Rural and Historical Society.

Originally named the Duxbury Whaler, the late Bob Pierce, longtime resident of the seaside town whose descendants still call Duxbury home, designed and co-founded the legendarily unsinkable Boston Whaler, which made its debut at the New York Boat Show in 1958.

A class dispute between North and South Plymouth rendered Kingston its own town in the summer of 1726. But earlier battles between the Wampanoags and the colonists were said to have raged on the historical property of Governor William Bradford, the separatist puritan leader and governor of Plymouth County for 30 years after arriving on the Mayflower and signing the Mayflower Compact in 1620. Home to the longest-running boatyard, the U.S.S. Independence was built at what is now known as the Jones River Landing, named after the river that runs through town. The coastal town sits on an inlet of Plymouth Bay and, like much of the south shore, relied on shipbuilding and ice harvesting as its main industry then, professional fishermen and cranberry growers still continue to make a living today. The town turned more residential in the 1950s once the railway offered easy transportation to and from Boston, but Kingston residents still enjoy everyday life by the sea, flocking to Gray’s Beach in the northern Rocky Nook neighborhood, once a resort community for affluent summer vacationers. The annual Kingston Waterfront Festival draws people to the shore for festivities and a 5K, just finishing its fourth successful year.

Marshfield

PLYMOUTH

Prior to the separatists landing at Plymouth Rock in 1620, other European explorers had paid a couple visits to the area. Two separate plagues nearly obliterated the Wampanoag population, leaving the land wide open for the original Mayflower settlers. Remaining Wampanoags would prove vital to the survival of the first English settlements and with their help a successful fur trade and bountiful harvest in 1621 led to the first celebrated Thanksgiving — a tradition which is honored yearly still with a parade and ceremonial reenactment in downtown Plymouth. Rope making, fishing, and shipping sustained the economy during the town’s earlier years but today’s active port serves as mostly a tourist destination. Beyond ice cream and souvenir shops, downtown Plymouth’s historical architecture and preserved character have attracted an array of shops and boutiques and a proliferation of restaurants bent on showcasing only fresh, local ingredients in farm-andsea-to-table menus — albeit more refined, they bow to our forefathers and the area’s enduring abundance. The burgeoning business scene in Plymouth welcomed Mayflower Brewery Company in 2007, another nod to America’s hometown history, garnering the town more attention.

FUN FACT

The Mayflower Pilgrims originally landed at Clark’s Island, not Plymouth Rock! They’d find their way to the mainland and to the beloved and historical landmark eventually, but the small island in Duxbury Bay was discovered first, during a harsh December storm when a group left the Mayflower anchored in search of shelter and respite. An enormous boulder marked their first service ashore before initiating repair of the ailing ship. Known as Pulpit Rock, the site still draws visitors yearly for the Clark’s Island Picnic, an annual celebration offering tours and reflections on the island’s centuries of history.

HINGHAM

Hingham, Massachusetts is a small, suburban coastal town located on Boston Harbor in the South Shore. Hingham is most commonly known for being the home of the Harbormen, having the oldest church in America within our town lines, and Wahlburgers (their food is simply delicious).

The Bradford House, Kingston

COHASSET

Cohasset’s unique beauty is unlike most of the South Shore seascape, where boundless marshes dominate our views. Native Algonquins called it Konahasset, meaning long, rocky place, while shipwrecks and other colonial stories lent their names to many meaningful boulders, inlets, and lighthouses that mark its meandering coastline. Presidents and other noteworthy politicians have visited, vacationed, and fished from Cohasset’s jagged ledges, time-honored writers like Thoreau and Longfellow have captured its majesty in their poetry and prose, and famous actors have called the town home. Stars like Humphrey Bogart had their beginnings at the local theater before hitting the big screen, yet Cohasset is best known in Hollywood as the stunning backdrop for the dark comedy classic The Witches of Eastwick.

FUN FACT

Though 2020 may have delayed its 250th anniversary celebration — Cohasset separated from Hingham in 1770 — nothing much can dampen the town’s collective spirit. Residents recently selected an official town cocktail: The Cohasset Smash!

Though it sounds glamorous, the town defines quaint and remains down to earth — residents stop to wave pedestrians across the street in their downtown stretch known as The Village, Cohasset’s Main Street which offers shopping, dining and local culture. Their town common is quintessential New England, and serves as a historical landmark President Coolidge once enjoyed with his host, publisher and financier Clarence Barron, to listen to the bells of St. Stephen’s Church. Townspeople agree there's no rhyme or reason as to when, but they still ring from atop the soaring granite of Bourne's Rock on any given day.

dogs! FOR THE

According to the U.S. Pet Ownership & Demographics

Sourcebook, Massachusetts ranks the lowest both in pet ownership and specifically in dog ownership among all 50 states. Still the 25% of us with furry friends love walking, running, and roaming with them every day in rain, snow, or – preferably – shine. Massachusetts general laws state that when your dog is off your property, it must be on a leash. Intended to protect people from free-roaming dogs, animals in public places are required to be leashed at all times. The South Shore’s never-ending coastline, ample hiking trails, and dedicated conservation areas are worth exploring – you’ll never exhaust all the possibilities - just keep your furry friend tethered close by.

JB’s Indoor Dog Park in Norwell and Kingston (Kingston Collection) offers parties for your pooch and everyday playtime without weather worries.

WELLNESS IN MOTION

RICHARDS hello from the family RICHARDS

our favorite places on the South Shore

Hello, I am Kerry Richards, and I live on the South Shore with my two boys, ages 3 and 4.5. As a lifelong resident of the South Shore and now a mom, these are some of our favorite places.

When it comes to playing, which is what we love to do the most, there are many great local playgrounds, such as Kids at Play (Marshfield) and Hanover Playground. Some of our favorite libraries include the Hanover Library, Hingham Library, and

Hanson Library. We have also attended several events and playgroups at Over the Moon Parenting (Norwell).

In the warmer months, we love visiting the local beaches, ponds, and hiking trails. These include

a long-time family favorite, Nantasket Beach (Hull), Rexhame Beach (Marshfield), Humarock Beach (Scituate), Little Sandy Bottom Pond (Pembroke), Gray’s Beach (Kingston), Ames Nowell Park (Abington), and Wampatuck State Park (Hingham).

Kerry Richards | Photo Credit MaryLee Photography LLC

We also like to visit our furry barnyard friends at the local farms, like Weir River (Hingham), Hidden Acres (Plymouth), and Pony Town (East Bridgewater). In the spring, we enjoy Cross Street Tulip Farm (Norwell); in the fall, we like apple picking at CN Smith (Bridgewater).

Now that my kids are past the baby stage, they attend birthday parties at fun play places like Starland (Hanover), Billy Bees

take group swim lessons at places like Plymouth Fitness, Weymouth Club, YMCA, or the Boys & Girls Club Marshfield (outdoor pool). When it comes to grabbing a quick bite to eat while on the road, there are, of course, many Dunkins, Starbucks, and Marylous around where I will get an iced latte and the kids a small snack. For breakfast, we will sometimes get pancakes from Buppa’s (Marshfield). A favorite dinner place of ours is Poopsies (in “Pemfield”), where the kids play the nostalgic Pacman machine. There are also food truck nights at Forge Pond Park (Hanover).

I highly recommend everyone try for improved health and wellness, I like to take classes at YogaSix (Kingston), Holding Space (Pembroke), and Whitman Wellness Center. For additional exercise, I like to go to the gym at Planet Fitness or Anytime Fitness. In the summer, I enjoy standup paddleboarding through SUPYo on Hingham Harbor, and attending The Marshfield Fair or the Levitate Music Festival. I also like shopping at Derby Street (Hingham), Hanover Crossing, The Shipyard, or

ALONG THE SOUTH SHORE

Arriving as a newcomer in Plymouth, I started to explore hiking in the area. Each town had a few hikes on file, Wildlands Trust was a good resource, but I had soon hiked all I could find in print. So, I looked for green spaces on maps and signs along the road. Over the next 15 years, I collected over 150 hikes along bogs, along the shore, quiet wooded areas, along rivers and hills. They ranged from the South Shore to the Upper Cape Cod including Myles Standish State Forest and the Pine Hills area. There are many more but I generally included only hikes between two and five miles.

Starting in the north, the following hikes are outstanding: The Tucker-Luddams Ford Reserves along Indian Head River, Philips Farm Preserve in Marshfield, Willow Brook Farm Preserve in Pembroke. Further south Duxbury and Kingston offer several great hikes including Duxbury Beach, North Hill Marsh, Stewart’s Preserve and Parting Way Cemetery. Further west, Carver has the Cole Property and Taunton a great hiking area in Massasoit State Park.

Myles Standish State Forest with 18 square miles offers many great hikes.

A separate book features 50 hikes in Myles Standish State Forest alone. Wing Hole, Cherry Pond and East Head reservoir are particularly scenic.

Plymouth itself has many great hikes. There are former Makepeace bogs: Mass Audubon

the trails in the South Shore with others.”

Tidmarsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Plymouth Long Beach, the Pine Hills and Wildlands Trust properties such as Davis-Douglas Conservation area, Halfway Pond Conservation Area, Shifting Lot Preserve and South Triangle Pond  Conservation Area. But there are many more distributed over the Plymouth area such as Eel River Preserve, Long Duck Pond Conservation Area, Ellisville State Park, Center Hill Conservation Area, Horse Pond and Wynn Memorial Reservation.

South of Plymouth in the Upper Cape area there are many hikes on both sides of the Cape Cod Canal.

Wareham among others offers the Lyman Reservation and Great Neck hikes; Sandwich and Bourne have the 13 miles along the Cape Cod Canal on both sides; the Sagamore Hill and Scussett Beach, Carter Beal Area.

My books Hike the South Shore and Upper Cape!, Hike Plymouth and Beyond!,  Hike the Pine Hills!, and 50 hikes in Myles Standish State Forest! describe over 150 of these hikes. For each hike, there are directions and a GPS address, a map of the hike, a couple of pictures and a description of the hike.

You can also check out my Facebook page, Frank Werny Plymouth Hikes.

AROUND EVERY TURN FALL IN LOVE

There’s a mix of emotions when you first make a move — from excitement and sadness to overwhelm since those boxes won’t unpack themselves. Taking a break and taking a drive is a wonderful way to acquaint yourself and pass the time, and to ease the bewilderment of mapping your new neighborhood and the roads beyond. Easy on the eyes around every turn, the only thing you may find difficult is figuring which town you’ve skipped into along the South Shore. From the cliffs of Scituate, Route 3A follows the coast and eventually discovers Manomet Point in Plymouth — the Myles Standish Monument standing tall as a proud beacon along the way. Take any turn off to explore the neighborhoods and harbors tucked in and around the endless salt marshes that naturally preserve open space. Waving seagrass will greet you while only partially blocking the beautiful views.

Situated at a high bluff overlooking Cape Cod Bay, sits The Lobster Pound, a 50-year tradition on Manomet Point in Plymouth. Grab something for your seafood dinner later, or simply grab one of their lobster rolls to enjoy while taking in the expansive views. Neither grey skies nor slush takes away from the infinite beauty offered along the Powder Point Bridge in Duxbury. Though it lost its place in the record books as the oldest and longest wooden bridge (after being rebuilt due to fire in the 1980s), the half-mile long wonder extends from Duxbury Beach over the Back River connecting Gurnet Road to King Caeser Road. Beautiful views - and a certain feel ing as you slowly roll over the timberscan be found here in any season.

You need to make a friend in this neigh borhood to park closely by unless you don’t mind taking the mile-long walk from the public parking lot off Driftway Avenue. Either way, it’s worth

Fall adventures and beautiful views at the Gurnet Light.
3rd Cliff Spit Boardwalk Trail, Scituate.

FRESH

FISHING TIPS IN DUXBURY BAY FOR LATE SUMMER (AUGUST–SEPTEMBER)

Welcome to one of the best fisheries in New England and a world-renowned destination for sport fishermen. An abundance of target species and gastronomical delights abound throughout the summer, particularly in August, including striped bass, bluefish, tautaug, fluke and flounder.

By Author: Capt. Ed Kislauskis, Cuz Charters (Plymouth MA)

TOP 10

DUXBURY FISHING SITES & TIDE PREFERENCE MARKED

1. Bug Light (Low incoming)

2. Eastside of Brown’s Bank mid-tide outgoing

3. Northside Clark’s Island outgoing

4. Westside Clarks Island and Duxbury Channel either side of channel incoming

5. Cowyard entrance to Kingston Channel incoming

6. Rip exiting Kingston Channel outgoing

7. High Pines to Duxbury Beach in moving water

8. Inside of Duxbury Beach Channel and from Powder Point Bridge outgoing and evenings

9. Saquish Channel early a.m. before boater traffic

10. Duxbury Channel at the Bend before Duxbury Harbor mooring field early a.m./later p.m.

Duxbury Bay exits via Plymouth Bay into Cape Cod Bay through naturally tortuous, carved and often narrow channels, many of which were recently dredged (2018) and now marked by navigation buoys. The entrance to Duxbury Bay begins at Pier Light (aka Bug Light, see photo 1). Structure and a continuously changing tide averaging 10 feet help flush nutrients, bait and target species in and out of the three bays (Duxbury, Kingston and Plymouth) every 6 hours. Whether high or low tide, there are plenty of places fish concentrate in order to ambush their prey giving us fishermen ample opportunities to catch-em-up. See some of my favorite spots in August differentiated for high and low tides marked on the map, as well as access points (ramps) if your trailer or kayak and seeking safe anchorage areas to overnight.

Two tools are especially handy in our Bays, a good GPS and sonar. Also, because our temperatures are hot during most days in August, fishing is best done at first light (4am–9am) before SW summer winds build or in the evening before and after sunset, especially on an incoming tide. My buddies and I often look for a shift in tide from dead low and along deep structures like Bug Light. For many species, the bite is best when water temps are between 55–62F, so an influx of cold water from Cape Cod Bay is a big boost.

Favorite baits in Plymouth include live mackerel caught in Cape Cod Bay, generally in deep water and typically within 2 miles of Gurnet Light and Can #1 at the entrance to Plymouth Bay. Live menhaden (aka pogies) are found tight inside our harbors and most

easily snagged at first light when the water is calm. Crabs and squid that hang in at the entrances to each bay in the channels; and sea clams caught off any of the sandy beaches at low tide, including Browns Bank, a popular boater/beacher hangout during the summer along the main channel to Cape Cod Bay.

Favorite artificial casting lures for our area include any of a number of floating plugs like pencil poppers, Atoms with bucktails for surface action, and those that dive or spin or flash below the surface like cast masters and sluggos and similars. Great trolling lures include Rapalas, X-raps and alike. Other soft baits either cast individually or trolled in a group like Niners and shad rigs are particularly successful when few weeds are in the water. Wireline trolling with lead heads, parachute jigs with or without soft bait paddle tails are becoming more popular, thanks to our friends’ successes in waters south of New Jersey. Chartreuse and/or white soft baits seem to work best for me and others.

My favorite method of fishing involves using live bait, mackerel or pogies. Given a choice, live pogies would be our go-to bait. These meaty 12”+ baits are hardy and like candy to large (legal-sized) stripers. They are difficult to find, however. Gill netting is a common method. Purchasing live or frozen pogies for cut-bait at a local bait shop is possible too. Plan ahead or tuna fishermen will snatch them up. I have fished this bay for 30+ years and enjoy taking new friends out on charter trips. Contact me through cuzcharters.com and try to catch and release when possible.

TOP PICKS FOR YOUR

M RNING

It’s widely known how well-loved a good iced or piping hot coffee is in and around Boston – after all, Massachusetts boasts the second-highest number of beloved Dunkin’ franchises behind only New York State, having launched the first and original store in Quincy back in 1950. But the South Shore proper offers up its very own chain identified by iconic retro pink signage which extends to bubblegum pink counters and walls inside each of its nearly 40 shops. Marylou’s Coffee celebrates over 30 years serving up hot and iced coffee in a variety of flavors for every New Englander. The first was opened in Hanover in 1986, but you’ll find one in Scituate, Pembroke, Kingston, and Plymouth. For those aficionados new to the South Shore who like to venture off the beaten path, small coffee shops, where some even roast their own beans, are never far away, either.

Fletcher Souba offers a perfect cup of coffee from the freshest beans he roasts in his own 2-bay garage to serve at SlackTide in a beautiful and sustainable ceramic mug handmade by Local Pottery Studio in Norwell. Nestled in between Levitate and brand-new Rexicana, he opened for business recently with lifelong friend and Co-owner Zac Carpman, both originally of Marshfield Hills. The fresh space invites you to stick around, swap stories, and get to know the staff and other patrons who wander freely between the three open spaces, offering a truly unique community feel.

OFF COFFEE OR INTO COLD BREW?

Lauren Champagne, local yoga teacher and lifelong Pembroke resident, prefers The Juice Station for their on-tap nitro cold brew, with almond milk. She recommends their overnight oats for a quick breakfast, as well, and promises, “You really can’t go wrong.” Lauren got her start at Open Doors Yoga Studios, which offers both online and in-person classes from early mornings into the evenings at their many South Shore locations, including Hingham, Norwell, and Duxbury. Class passes and monthly memberships work conveniently at all studios!

Lynda and Logan, mother and daughter from Green Harbor in Marshfield, enjoying the deck at Lucky Finn in Scituate, with its harbor views and the Scituate Lighthouse in the distance. Besides excellent coffee, Lucky Finn serves up sweets as well as tasty sandwiches like The Figgy, Lynda’s favorite. They recommended The Coffee Shack for the best coffee and doughnuts in their own neighborhood
