QUEEN CREEK! WELCOME TO

kaileyaphotography.com
WE ARE SO HAPPY YOU ARE HERE.

Whether you’ve moved across town or from another city or state, settling into a new area can be both exciting and overwhelming. Within the first few months, you will likely be establishing new routines, getting to know local hotspots, looking into local professionals and influencers and exploring your new community’s vast resources. With so many nuances and so much on your plate from this new chapter in your life, it can be daunting to think about everything you need to do to get used to your new surroundings.
When we moved to the east valley six years ago, it was quite the transition. Starting over can be tough, especially when you have kids. We chose Gilbert because we had heard such great things about the safety of the area, the school district and the people! After our house was finished being built, there were SO many “projects” (as my husband calls them) to get done, it was overwhelming. From backyard design to built-ins, the list was never-ending. To add to our plates, we didn’t know a single soul here. Meeting people and learning about the things to do around town took time, not to mention a lot of work! For this reason, among others, I’m truly passionate about community connection, which BeLocal more than provides!
I hope you will find this resource guide helpful as you get settled into your new home. Additionally, the businesses listed throughout this publication are locally owned and not only provide the best services and products but also truly care about our community. Therefore, I would encourage you to give these business sponsors the opportunity to win your business. Remember, when you
support small, local businesses, you are supporting local jobs, local families and our community! BeLocal — SHOP LOCAL, SPEND LOCAL, BE LOCAL!
Lastly, the residents of Queen Creek are some of the nicest people you will ever meet! Everyone is so friendly and willing to offer advice or recommendations. I encourage you to get out there and meet your neighbors. Whether it’s at a park, on a trail or through social media, don’t be afraid to ask questions, learn about local events and find ways to get involved. Join the BeLocal Queen Creek movement on Facebook and Instagram, @BeLocalQueenCreek.
If you have any questions about this resource guide, want us to promote a great locally-owned business or are looking for additional resources to help you get settled in your new home and community, feel free to get in touch with me!
Again, welcome to Queen Creek. … Welcome HOME!

welcome to QUEEN CREEK
I OFTEN LIKE TO SAY THAT I’M QUEEN CREEK’S # 1 FAN. WITH SO MANY EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING HERE, IT’S HARD NOT TO CHEER FOR OUR TOWN!

My husband Benjamin and I made Queen Creek our home in 2007 and we’ve never looked back. As an Arizona native, I loved growing up in the East Valley and one of the reasons we chose Queen Creek was because it reminds me so much of growing up in the 80s in my hometown of Gilbert. We have loved raising our four children in this family friendly community. I ran for Council in June 2010, right after my first daughter was born. Three terms – and three kids - later, I decided to run for Mayor. I’ve had the privilege of seeing Queen Creek grow from a small, farming community to a booming, vibrant Town. As one of the fastest-growing municipalities in the U.S., we are excited about what’s to come. There are so many opportunities for our community – as new roads are built, new businesses come to town, and new places to recreate are made, our Town is quickly becoming a place where residents can not only live, but work and play, as well!
We have a saying, that Queen Creek has “convenience of the city, with the comfort of the country.” Amidst rapid growth, Queen Creek’s legacy of agriculture still stands. Whether it’s spending a spring morning picking peaches at Schnepf Farms, a fourth-generation family farm and the largest peach grower in Arizona, or attending one of the exciting events hosted at Horseshoe Park and Equestrian Centre throughout the year, we cherish our roots. We’re also home to the Queen Creek Olive Mill, the only family owned and operating working olive mill and farm in Arizona, as well as Sossaman Farms, a locally owned farm that’s been growing wheat for more than 100 years and is the location of Hayden Flour Mills, another local favorite.
Queen Creek is a thriving, fun and safe place to raise a family. We have award-winning parks and trails and are continuing to build spaces for our residents to recreate. Mansel Carter Oasis Park offers something for everyone with an inclusive playground, community fishing lake, splash pad, wheel-friendly area and of course lots of open space to run. The two natural washes that run through Queen Creek have been improved to include multi-use paths, providing an excellent environment to walk, run, cycle or even roller blade! Construction is underway of a new 85-acre community park, Frontier Family Park, located

on Signal Butte Road north of Queen Creek Road. Frontier Family Park will also include Queen Creek’s first recreation and aquatic center!
We also have an established fire department with a new ambulance service and recently launched our very own police department. We’re focused on creating a town where families will choose to live for generations. I’ve always been passionate about keeping Queen Creek a family friendly place – which made the Town’s recent designation by Dwellics as ‘The Best City in the West to Raise a Family’ particularly exciting! It’s a designation I’m very proud of!
I welcome you to our community and hope you come to love living in and exploring Queen Creek just as much as I do. I encourage you to get involved– whether it be through completing the Town’s Citizen Leadership Institute program, attending a public meeting, volunteering for one of our amazing nonprofits, or getting out to know your neighbors. I look forward to seeing you out and about, enjoying this fantastic community!

choosing
your
school
Moving to a new school district in most cases is fairly straightforward. However, in Arizona, it often poses MANY questions as there are several K-12 options to explore. School Choice and public tuition-free schools set Arizona apart from numerous states across the country. We have an abundance of choices and the doors are open regardless of your address.
Queen Creek offers various options for K-12 District, Charter and Private schools. Researching and exploring ALL the available options, whether it’s online research or in-person tours, is essential in the decisionmaking process. Here, you’ll find a brief overview of some questions to consider when choosing a new school.
Is the proximity of the school important? Do you need/want a school within walking distance?
Does the school’s calendar and schedule work for your family?
Do you need/want a school that provides buses and transportation?
Is the arrival/dismissal process streamlined and well-organized?

“My family and I moved a few years ago, and I really wanted my children to attend a neighborhood school. We did research and found Queen Creek Unified Schools to be a great school district with high ratings.”
– Teresa L. QCUSD Parent
Does the school offer the programs you need? (Gifted, Special Education, STEM-focused, Career and Technical Education, AVID, etc.)
Do you need before/after care? Does the school offer it at times you need?
Does the school offer the electives and specials your family wants?
Does the school offer athletics, clubs, and extracurricular activities your family wants? Does it compete at the level you’d like?
Are there reasonable class sizes and quality classroom resources?
What are the homework expectations and uniform options? Do they align with your family?
What parent involvement is allowed/ encouraged in the classroom? Are there opportunities for parents and grandparents to volunteer or participate in a PTO?

CELEBRATING YOUR TOWN
THE HISTORY OF QUEEN CREEK
Since its incorporation on Sept. 5, 1989, the Town of Queen Creek has fulfilled residents’ dreams for the community. The Town has adopted several award-winning plans designed to guide future growth, planning and land use, as well as provide amenities. The Town has grown from rich rural roots to what is one of the most innovatively planned family-friendly hometowns in Arizona. Let’s take a look at some of the rich history!
ORIGIN OF STREET NAMES
How often have we driven down a street and wondered the origin of its name? For many of our local roads, we can thank the families that settled in the shadows of the San Tan Mountains. Their stamina, tolerance for inconvenience, and passion for success has been the foundation for these communities.
In 1914, everyone but John and Mathilda Germann knew that it was impossible to farm on the desert of Arizona. The Germanns purchased a relinquishment of 480 acres from a discouraged homesteader, and established their home and pumping plant. In 1917, J.O. Power moved to the Queen Creek area with a brother, Bernard (Buck). Their homestead consisted of 320 acres and was located a half mile east of what is now Power Road on Ocotillo.

Jasper Sossaman, his mother, and his brother, Lee, moved to the homestead in 1919 after his father died. It consisted of 320 acres on what is now the S.W. corner of Sossaman and Ocotillo roads. Jasper (Jap) began working for Charlie Rittenhouse, operating and maintaining the diesel engines that powered the pumps used to irrigate Queen Creek Farms.

Johnny Crismon moved to Queen Creek with his wife Margaret in 1946. They partnered with several other farmers in growing lettuce and carrots. Queen Creek’s first school, an old muleskinner cook shack was located half mile north of Queen Creek Road on the west side of what is now Crismon Road.
Ernest E. Hawes started farming in Queen Creek in the 1930s. The original homestead was on the south side of Chandler Heights Road, north of the Sonoqui Wash, just west of what is now Hawes Road.
Charles Rittenhouse was well established by 1924 with the Queen Creek Farms Company. The wells typically pumped 2,150 gallons of water per minute and were 400 feet deep. The availability of water made his 1,000 acres of farmland very productive.
In 1928, the Rittenhouse property was sold to Leo Ellsworth. He and his brothers formed The Ellsworth Brothers Farms, an operation that soon consisted of cotton, large acreages of farm produce, cattle, sheep, and a dairy herd. Leo is credited with bringing in the first phone line to Queen Creek.

FUN FACT
Queen Creek is young! Queen Creek is only 32 years old. Well, the town has been around much longer than that, but it was incorporated in 1989 to form The Town of Queen Creek.

Desert Well Stage Stop
According to USGS maps dated 1904, a historic road passed by a well on Andrada’s Ranch. The homesteaders called the site Desert Wells, and according to folklore, it was a stage stop for the Arizona Stage Company operating from 1868 to approximately 1916. Freight and stage companies often had arrangements, honored on a handshake with ranchers, for use of local wells and outbuildings.
The Desert Wells Stage Stop was described by the early settlers as a simple one-room building about 10-foot square, constructed of rock and mud, with a thatched roof and awning – a style very similar to Pima Indian dwellings of that time. There was a trough running around three of the sides, which was used for watering the horses and mules. The awning shaded the short walk to the well on the south side. According to the homesteaders that have passed along stories about this site, it had one 4-foot door and small gun ports instead of windows. Anecdotal tales of discovered bodies and gunfights with Indians continue to nourish the imaginations of many in the area who visit this site three quarters of a mile south of Ocotillo Road, on the east side of Sossaman Road.
Even though this was a small spur stop, it holds a significant role in history and folklore of the area and is treasured by communities in the shadows of San Tan Mountain.

a handy to
your biggest investment HOME MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST
Regular maintenance is critical to keeping any home running in tip-top shape. Putting in the sweat equity to maintain your home - or paying a pro to do it for you - prevents costly repair headaches later on.
MONTHLY/REGULARLY

□ Blow out debris from your soffit vents to maintain good attic ventilation.
□ Remove built up lint inside the dryer and the dryer vent.

□ Have your electrical/breaker panel inspected and serviced annually.
□ Have all drains, garbage disposals, toilets, showers, and sinks inspected every year to ensure proper flow to avoid upcoming damage.
□ If you have garage doors it is recommended to coat the overhead torsion springs mounted above roller tracks with a garage door lubricant and lube the rollers, hinges and track while you’re at it.
2+ YEARS
□ Clean evaporator coils every 2-5 years depending on the house.
□ Clean air ducts every 3-5 years unless a purifier is installed.

RESTORING GOOD TIMES

□ Carpets and tile should be professionally cleaned every 2-4 years to avoid indoor air quality issues.

Golfing in Arizona offers a unique and unparalleled experience due to its stunning desert landscapes and abundant sunshine. The state boasts a plethora of worldclass golf courses designed by renowned architects, providing a challenging yet enjoyable environment for golf enthusiasts. With mild winter temperatures and picturesque backdrops, Arizona’s golfing scene creates an inviting and unforgettable setting for players of all skill levels.
What Is Overseeding?
Arizona’s extreme tempera tures, both hot and cold, make it difficult for a single type of grass to thrive year-round. Overseeding is the process of changing the grass from the natural Bermuda grass to a variety that can handle the low winter temperatures. Bermuda grass that is not overseeded will turn blonde when dormant. This process ensures consistent playing conditions throughout the year.

ARO U ND TOWN
As the Town of Queen Creek continues to grow and develop, so does the beautiful art, sculptures and monuments you can find. There seems to be a hidden gem placed at all of your favorite Queen Creek stops.
MARIPOSA FALLS ▸ This unique piece of art can be found at the Queen Creek Library. Commissioned by the Town of Queen Creek, artist Hank Same & Cynthia Patterson found a unique way of turning an old irrigation control valve into a beautiful piece of art. It is a great reminder of the importance of water in the desert.

PECAN TREE ▸ This Bronze Pecan Tree stands tall inside the Queen Creek Marketplace as a fitting addition to honor Queen Creek's agricultural roots. The fertile valley below the San Tan Mountains offered a safe haven for the early Indian communities and the homesteaders who farmed and ranched along Queen Creek Wash. Citrus, cotton, pecans, vegetables, and other crops still provide for area families. The fingerprints, initials, and carvings of local children can be found in the bark of the bronze tree.
MANSEL CARTER STATUE - MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN ▸ Located in the Queen Creek Marketplace, you can grab a seat next to local celebrity Mansel Carter. Carter made his home on Goldmine Mountain, where he had filed mining claims for 40 years. Over the years, he became a genuine celebrity, welcoming visitors from all over the world.

CONGRATULATIONS ON MOVING TO BEAUTIFUL QUEEN CREEK

Head to Dogtopia of Gilbert for a fun day with other pup friends or for a longer stay while your humans are out of town! - Gilbert G.
GOOD HUMAN!
Welcome to Queen Creek! In you’re new to the state you’re on-board to see an abundance of natural beauty all around you. However, Arizona is home to numerous plants, animals, and weather conditions that can be dangerous to canines big and small. From scorpions and tarantulas, plant predators to extreme heat, and Valley Fever, these are just a few of the state’s greatest dangers to your pet. The best way to keep your dog safe is to be knowledgeable about your new home so that you’re prepared in the event of an emergency.
EXTREME HEAT
Probably the biggest weather risk your pooch faces in Arizona is extreme heat. Introduce your pup to the new climate as gradually as possible, especially if you come to the area in the summer. Pets with short, light-colored fur, especially on their ears, are especially susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer. Talk to your vet about a good dog sunscreen if you think yours may be at risk.
One of the most important things to remember is to never, under any circumstance or deadline, leave your dog in a parked car. On a warm day car interior temperatures can rise rapidly to dangerous levels, even with a window cracked, and the longer you’re gone, the hotter it gets. Leaving a dog in this condition is not only cruel torture, but it can also cause irreversible organ damage and even death in less than five minutes. Another good rule-of-thumb is that if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet!
VALLEY FEVER
Valley Fever is caused by a fungus that lives in the desert soil in the southwestern United States. Like people, dogs are very susceptible to Valley Fever. As part of its life cycle, the fungus grows in the soil and dries into fragile strands of cells. The strands are very delicate, and when the soil is disturbed - by digging, walking, construction, high winds - the strands break apart into tiny individual spores. Dogs and other animals mainly acquire Valley Fever by inhaling these fungal spores in the dust and air. The dog may inhale only a few spores or many hundreds. The most common early symptoms of Valley Fever in dogs: coughing, fever, weight loss, lack of appetite, and lack of energy.

you care takingof
top-notch beauty services
for women, men and children
By Rich Ganley, Local Resident
Taking care of oneself has never seemed so important as it is today. If the challenges of the current world situation have taught us anything, it’s that Health and Wellness must take priority above all else. Unfortunately, studies show the very act of moving has been deemed as stressful as a divorce. That intense level of strain wreaks havoc on both our mental and physical health. After experiencing a stressful life event such as a big move, it’s vital to take the time to unpack your stress.
When considering ways to handle your post-move-in stress, you may want to turn to your nearest Beauty Lounge & Med Spa. Not just for special occasions or while on vacation, treatments at a Medical Spa can prove to do wonders for you inside and out. Here are some services to think about to help combat tension and stress.
Do yourself a favor and check out IV Nutrient Therapy (vitamin drips or injections). IV Nutrient Therapy gives you an edge to help combat fatigue, hypertension, infections and among other ailments, anxiety and depression. Vitamin Therapy is especially helpful in boosting one’s immune system so you’re less likely to catch a cold or flu.
If you think wellness from a Med Spa is just about mud masks and cucumbers over your eyes, you’d be mistaken. Scientific studies show that maintaining a skin care regimen including regular facial treatments decrease cortisol (stress hormone) levels- proving that the influence our physical appearance can have over our mood is not to be overlooked.
After you’ve unpacked that last box and settled into your new space, seek out a Beauty Lounge and Med Spa for these services discussed. More than just pampering yourself, a day of wellness is an investment in your own health.

anxiety MANAGING
Contributor: Melissa J Seil-Butler Owner, ZenLife Center for Healing
Has life ever felt so overwhelming that you’ve noticed your heart beating fast or your breathing has become rapid? Or do you just feel tired all the time? Well, sometimes these things can be attributed to anxiety. Anxiety can affect young and old alike. Children may complain of stomach aches or headaches, no matter what the symptoms are, changes in life and circumstance can have a big effect on your overall well-being. So, how can we learn to help ourselves manage anxiety? Try some of these mindfulness techniques and healthy lifestyle changes and begin to see some noticeable improvements in your day-to-day life.

EATING A HEALTHY DIET
Yes, we all know what we should eat, but those fast and easy-to-make items can make life a breeze in the short run, especially when we are pressed for time. Keeping quick grab items around like organic apples, bananas and jars of cold brewed herbal teas readily available will help stave off hunger pains and keep your blood sugars down. Then when it’s time to eat your main meals of the day, you are much more likely to make good choices.
GETTING PLENTY OF SLEEP
That old adage of early to bed and early to rise may be the ticket to reducing some of that built-up anxiety. Going to bed at a “reasonable” time can be challenging for many people, but trying to set your next day up the night before really helps people begin to create better sleep cycles. Try setting a time that you and your whole family get off their devices before bedtime so that the blue light from those electronics doesn’t hamper your ability to wind down.
With moving being ranked as one of the top 5 most stressful life events, it can sometimes cause symptoms of depression, anxiety, and adjustment issues.
YOGA AND MEDITATION
Having regular meditation practice can do so much to help calm the mind. Mindfulness practices help to keep your mind from going to the past or the future, neither of which help you in the present moment. Learning how to create peace in your body is one of the toughest things you can do when you are suffering with anxiety. Yoga teaches you how to be in your body while meditation teaches you how to focus your mind.
BREATHE
Learning how to breathe properly can go a long way. Breathing techniques like 4-7-8, inhaling to the count of 4, holding it to the count of 7 and exhaling to the count of 8, are simple things that you can do anywhere to bring yourself out of a highly anxious state. Breathwork can even help lower blood pressure and aid with reducing insomnia.
GET OUTSIDE
Finally, get out into nature. Going outside every day and connecting with nature is a great way to get out of your head and bring yourself back to the present moment. Get a nice pair of walking shoes and enjoy Arizona’s 300+ days of pure sunshine. You may need to get up pretty early in the morning during the summer months.

CHAPIN FAMILY
CHAPIN FAMILY

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY?
Hello! We are the Chapin Family and we have been established in Queen Creek for the last 6 years. My husband (Chris) and I have a blended family consisting of 6 kids! I know … CRAZY! Our oldest three are Tizzi (23), Tayge (19), and Trinity (16), and our youngest three are each a year apart...Four, Three, and Two! Amid all our craziness, we also co-own Awsum Salon in South Gilbert. While my husband has stepped away from working behind the chair, he's now in the roofing business!
WHAT BROUGHT YOU HERE / WHY DID YOU MOVE HERE?
I met my husband who was already a local to Queen Creek and moved out here to open a salon where there were more opportunities for growth and better schools.

WHAT HAD YOU HEARD ABOUT QUEEN CREEK BEFORE YOU MOVED HERE?
We heard that Queen Creek was a safe and inviting place to raise our family and decided to anchor our roots here when the youngest three were born.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO AS A FAMILY ON THE WEEKENDS?
Our weekends look a little different from most, with Sunday and Monday being our main “off” days. The three younger boys love spending time outdoors and burning off energy, but their absolute favorite activity is taking the Jeep off-roading whenever the weather allows. In the summer, you’ll find us cooling off at the pool or creating fun YouTube videos! We even started a vlogging channel—The Chapin Family—which has been both exciting and entertaining!
IT’S 120-DEGREES. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO AROUND TOWN AS A FAMILY?
Oh, that is a tough one. We spend most of those days inside at the indoor parks we have! Great Wolf Lodge is fun as well as Kids Empire … just to name a few.
FAVORITES:
Restaurant: San Tan Flats or Queen Creek Olive Mill Shopping/Boutique: Sophie May Boutique is CUTE! Other: Awsum Salon is a GREAT place to find your forever stylist.

Whether you’re new to Arizona or recently moved within the larger Phoenix area, there are a lot of nuances to consider if you have kids that are looking to play high school athletics.
In Arizona’s competitive youth sports scene, the nuances are further shaped by the state’s school choice landscape. Parents often face decisions regarding the impact of school choice programs on their child’s sports opportunities,
There are three leagues in Arizona that make up high school athletics. These include:
Arizona Inter-Scholastic Association (AIA), Canyon Athletic Association (CAA), and the Great Hearts League.
Arizona Inter-Scholastic Association (AIA)
considering factors like travel distances to specialized programs, potential variations in the level of competition across different schools, and the influence of charter or private schools on sports infrastructure. Navigating youth sports in Arizona involves weighing these educational choices against the sports landscape, creating a unique set of challenges and opportunities for young athletes and their families in the state.
The primary factor in determining a school’s classification is typically its enrollment or student population. Schools with larger enrollments are often placed in higher classifications (4A-6A), while smaller schools are placed in lower classifications (1A-3A). This is done to promote fair competition among schools of similar size and resources. Schools can petition to move up in classification based on skill levels.

What Are The Transfer Rules? (9th
-12th grade)
▸ If a student transfers schools within the school calendar year they have to sit out for half a season in the sport they competed in at the prior school. They can however, play in a different sport at the new school as long as they didn’t compete in that sport 12 months prior to the transfer.
▸ If a student transfers a 2nd time within their high school career they have to sit out an entire season in any sport they competed in within the 12 month period at the prior school.
CUT SPORTS:
▸ In some high schools, certain sports teams have a limited number of spots available, and the tryouts are competitive.
▸ Coaches evaluate the skills, performance, and potential of the athletes during tryouts and make selections based on their assessments.
▸ 4A-6A are more typically cut sports
NON-CUT SPORTS:
▸ In contrast, non-cut sports typically have a more inclusive approach, allowing all interested students to join the team.
▸ These sports may not have a limit on the number of participants, or the limit is high enough to accommodate everyone who wants to play.
▸ The emphasis in non-cut sports is often on skill development, physical fitness, teamwork, and participation rather than on a highly competitive selection process.
▸ 1A-3A are more typically non-cut sports
