welcome TO YOUR NEW COMMUNITY:
FINANCIAL ACTION ITEMS TO CONSIDER

Written by Philip Lamar; President & CEO
Move your insurance local. Moving to a new community means starting over – with physicians, beauticians, landscapers, mechanics… The list can be overwhelming at first, but don’t neglect to find a local insurance broker too! Having someone who lives and works here means they will be in the know on the best state rates for Medicare, health, and life insurance, and are easily accessible should you need to file a claim. Plus, they will be a familiar, friendly face around town as you adjust to your new surroundings.
Find a broker who can shop the whole market. While traditional insurance agents can offer a lot of options, independent brokers can offer even more. They are not limited to selling products from just one company, but can compare prices and coverage across dozens of policies to customize a plan that’s a perfect fit for your needs.
Prepare for the unexpected. Disability and term life insurance can provide your loved ones with mortgage protection. This is a crucial step for top earners in a household, a practical act of love through service, that will alleviate the stress of downsizing homes on family members in an already tough time.
Get serious about retirement planning. New homes and job changes often come with pay increases. Rather than splurging on exciting, but expendable, high-ticket items that decrease in value, put that new cash to work for you by paying down debt and saving for retirement. An insurance broker can show you the benefits of tax-sheltered investment vehicles such as an indexed universal life policy, which can be overfunded in earning years and retains cash value to withdraw in retirement. If you own a business, you can utilize many tax-efficient and high-ROI retirement vehicles for you or your key employees.
Consider adding an insurance group plan to your small business. It’s more affordable than you might think! Offering health insurance coverage to employees is a sure-fire way to attract and retain top talent in a competitive job market. In fact, a UCLA study found that 70% of respondents would choose a lower-paying job if it included a benefits package over a higher-paying job with no benefits. For key employees at the management level, an executive bonus that becomes fully vested after 10, 20 or even 30 years can incentivize them to work hard and avoid leaving for new experiences or competing offers.

WATER
TOWER
FLORENCE Y'ALL THE TRUE STORY BEHIND THE NKY
By Florence Former Mayor Diane Whalen

I’m a lifelong resident of Florence and had the honor of serving as the city’s mayor for over 20 years. I have seen Florence transform from a small, rural town into the eighth-largest city in Kentucky and an economic engine for the entire area. Together with my fellow city council members, our police and firefighters, and all city employees, we have much of which to be proud: low city tax rates; a fiscal surplus that well positions our city to deal with future challenges and opportunities; strong economic growth from diverse industries and businesses, including retail, office, manufacturing, technology, and service sectors; and quality city
services that are recognized as the best in the Greater Cincinnati region.
Of course, we are nationally — and maybe internationally — known for the Florence Y’all water tower. It’s a legend in and of itself, but the story itself is even more legendary. In the early 1970s, the developers of the yet-to-be-built mall gave the land for the tower to the city, stipulating that the words “Florence Mall” be painted on it in view of interstate motorists. The tower would thus advertise the mall, which would open in September 1976.

The giant advertisement immediately raised legal concerns. In July 1974, Kentucky Bureau of Highways officials told the city that the tower’s sign was illegal because it advertised something that didn’t yet exist. Among the discussed possibilities were repainting the tower or covering the words with a large tarp.
With time running out to comply with the law, city staff met for a brainstorming session at a local restaurant with the late C.M. “Hop” Ewing (who happened to be my dad), then mayor of Florence, who “sketched different ideas on a napkin.” Dad ultimately devised the idea of removing the vertical lines at the sides of the M in MALL, adding a stem to make it a Y and adding an apostrophe, resulting in “Y’ALL.” Dad called it a “corny solution, but cost-effective,” because the minor alteration would cost one-third of a full repainting.

The publicity surrounding the Florence Y’all tower advertised the mall better than a passive sign alone, and on the mall’s opening day in late 1976, mall-goers created a traffic jam at the Kentucky Highway 18 exit from I-75.
AND, SO, FLORENCE Y’ALL LIVES ON TODAY.
Mayor Diane Whalen with father and former mayor, C.W. “Hop” Ewing, when she took office.

WITH THE
talking funny SNEEDS

Writen by Jill Morenz
Gracious and down to earth, Josh and Jenny Sneed spoke with us from their home in Union’s Triple Crown neighborhood, where they’ve lived for the last eight years.
Josh is a nationally known comedian, popular for his clean, observational humor. He said that his avoidance of swear words has not only made his mom proud, it has helped him get quite a bit of work, especially corporate gigs. When he first started doing comedy full-time, back in 2001, he was on the road 50 weeks a year. Nowadays, he typically travels two times a month, taking a break over the summer to hang out with his family.

Jenny and Josh’s romance began when Jenny saw him perform. He followed up with her on social media afterward. His persistence paid off when she agreed to go out with him. They now have two children, a 10-yearold son and a 5-year-old daughter.
Jenny is, as Josh puts it, the glue that sticks the family together. In addition to managing the kids’ schedules
and being a Girl Scout leader, she has a growing sugar-cookie business. Her baking adventures started when they realized their son was allergic to peanuts. Jenny made treats that were safe for him to eat, and it just expanded from there.
As if that weren’t enough for this busy family, Josh is also the co-owner of Cincy Shirts, with two retail stores and online sales. “The T-shirts kept me busy during COVID,” Josh says.
We asked the Sneeds to share some recommendations for new NKY residents.
What is your favorite way to spend a date night? ”Laughing,” Jenny says. “Costco, Target, Walgreens… Josh works on weekends, so sometimes it’s hard to have a real date night.” When they do get an evening to themselves, they love to have dinner at Walt’s Hitching Post and then catch a movie. “We are super Star Wars fans,” Jenny says. “Nerdy, but fun nerdy.”
What are your favorite family activities? Going to parks (“so many hidden gems,” says Josh), watching the Bengals and the Reds, visiting Fiona at the zoo and popping into Fillmore’s Dairy Hut for burgers and ice cream.
What do you love most about living in Northern Kentucky? Jenny sums it up, “We’re one mile from our family, five minutes from downtown Cincinnati, there’s great food, lots to do, and we’re surrounded by greenery and trees. It’s a wonderful place to raise a family.”

PRESCHOOLS
Preschool provides children with their initial exposure to school and sets the tone for their education. During this time, kids develop feelings, perceptions, and ideas about school. Here are some of the traditional preschool and Montessori preschools in NKY.
