LAKEWOOD! WELCOME TO

Welcome to Lakewood! We are so happy you are here.

Lakewood is chock-full of choices, from where to eat, play, get exercise, learn, socialize and everything else that makes life fun. Our community is rich with history, hundreds of parks and top-notch schools, but we are also very close to the amenities of all that Denver has to offer, as well being right up against the foothills and with easy access to the mountains.

I remember when I moved to Lakewood fourteen years ago… I felt like I was in a foreign land, I didn’t know where anything was and hadn’t met any friends or neighbors. It was an exciting time for my family but also a little scary too. Like us, you will likely be getting settled into your house, establishing new routines and need to find all new services. We have created this guide to help you that transition go a little smoother. Within this guide are “local” tips from Colorado and Lakewood natives, long-time residents and experts in their fields and include some of the best places to shop, dine and play.

Additionally, the businesses listed throughout this publication are locally owned and not only provide the best services and products, but also truly care about our community. Therefore, I would encourage you to give these businesses the opportunity to win your business. Remember, when you support small, local

businesses you are supporting local jobs, local families and our community! BELOCAL = SHOP LOCAL!

Lastly, the residents of Lakewood are some of the nicest people you will ever meet! Coloradoans are notoriously friendly and willing to offer advice or recommendations. I encourage you to get out there and meet your neighbors! Whether it’s at a park, on a trail, or through social media, don’t be afraid to ask questions, learn about local events, and find ways to get involved. Join the BeLocal Lakewood movement on Facebook @BeLocalLakewood and/or Instagram @BeLocalLakewood.

If you have any questions about this resource guide, want us to promote a great locally owned business, or are looking for additional resources to help you get settled in your new home and community, feel free to get in touch with me!

Again, welcome to Lakewood… welcome HOME!

Warm regards,

720.951.0991

1

Tell everyone your new address. Of course, people want to tell all of their friends and family when they just bought a home, especially first-time homebuyers. But make sure you also contact all of your creditors and all other companies you receive mail from to update your address. You should also submit a change of address form to the post office so that all your mail will get forwarded to your new address.

2

Get a professional deep clean. While many homes may look pretty clean, you can’t really be sure just by looking. It’s a good idea to hire a professional cleaning service to do a deep cleaning before you start moving your stuff in. It’s much easier and cheaper for cleaning to be done. Call locally-owned and Lakewood-based Rocio’s House Cleaning at 720.404.4784 to help you with this task!

3

Change the locks. Unless you’re buying a brandnew home from a builder, you need to have the locks changed. You don’t know who all has a key to your home, and that can be scary. Call locally-owned Highlands Locksmith to help with this (www.highlandlocksmithdenver.com). Get your garage doors reprogrammed so they only work with the remotes you have. It’s possible someone out there got their hands on an extra garage remote at some point. Call locally-owned Third Gen Garage Doors to help you with this task (www.thirdgengaragedoors.com).

Set up utilities, cable and internet. If you haven’t already, set up your cable and internet to transfer to your new home. Another option to consider is “cutting the cord.” No, this doesn’t mean living without Wi-Fi or TV! Streamwise Solutions, a Lakewood company, can help you cut your cable costs and utilize streaming for your needs (www.getstreamwise.com).

You will also need to contact the local water, electric and gas companies to have services turned on or transferred to your name.

Set up your home security system. Most homes these days come with a security system installed. However, it will not be active when you move in. You’ll need to contact a home security company to come out and get you set up. Carry the Light Audio Visual & Lighting (CTL-AVL) is a great local, family-owned company that can help you with all your home automation and security needs (www.ctlavl.com).

Meet your neighbors. It’s always good to get out and meet your neighbors. See who has kids your age, get inside information on the “‘hood” and make some friends. Your neighbors can also recommend great local services. They have lots of information on your new community and can also be a friendly extra set of eyes to on your house when you are away! Bonus!

Window Treatments. More than likely, your home did not come equipped with window treatments. For your privacy and to keep your neighbors from seeing something they shouldn’t, we suggest contacting an interior designer or blinds company to help you cover your windows in style.

Understand how the Colorado climate can impact your yard. If you are new to Colorado, it’s important to understand how our altitude and overall climate affect many things. From sprinkler blowouts in the fall to which plants thrive (or don’t survive), there are some great resources to learn more about how to use the Colorado sun and soil to your advantage. Visit Jared’s Nursery, Garden & Gifts jaredsgarden.com) to help pick the right plants for your yard — their experts will be more than happy to help. 4 9 8 7 6 5

Make your house feel like a HOME. This is your chance to create the space that personifies you! Bright, white kitchen? Cool slate showers? A custom barn door? What have you recently seen on Pinterest or Fixer Upper reruns that gets your blood pumping? Making a house YOUR home is gratifying and fun! For a great locally-owned remodeling company, please contact Summit Custom Builders (SummitCustomBuilders.net).

By Kimberly Montague, City of Lakewood

WHETHER YOU’RE A NEWCOMER TO THE GAME, A SCRATCH PLAYER, OR SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN, LAKEWOOD OFFERS YOU 45 HOLES OF CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF OVER TWO DISTINCTIVE COURSES.

FOX HOLLOW features three unique nine-hole layouts, each offering wonderful vistas, water challenges, and wildlife that will make you forget you are only a few miles from the bustle of urban Denver.

HOMESTEAD is a shorter 18-hole, links-style course. But don’t let the yardage fool you –Homestead offers memorable challenges to even the most seasoned golfers.

Here’s a look at some of the standout holes on each course, as well as tips from Lakewood’s golf pros on the best way to play them.

FOX HOLLOW CANYON #5 – This downhill par 4 to a large but hidden green is considered the signature hole at Fox Hollow. From the tee, aim for the lay-up flag, and don’t hold back. The biggest mistake most make is leaving themselves with a very long approach shot over a penalty area to the well protected green – the largest at Fox Hollow. The safe miss is slightly left, where shots can bounce on or near the green. Anything right or short will wind up in a drainage ditch and unplayable, where the best strategy is to use the drop area and try to salvage bogey.

FOX HOLLOW MEADOW #5 – Most golfers consider this downhill par 4 the most beautiful hole at Fox Hollow. From the tee, a forced carry is required over a creek to a fairway guarded on the left by a penalty area and on the right by a pond extending the last 160 yards to the green. The undulating green slopes back to front and, because of surrounding trees, can be more difficult to read early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

FOX HOLLOW LINKS #5 – Before teeing off on this difficult, uphill par 4, take a moment to enjoy the extraordinary view toward the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater. An uphill drive of 220 yards or more still leaves another 200 to reach a green protected in front by a deep bunker. Favor the right side off the tee as a mistake left brings a fairway bunker or worse, the long native grass, into play. Make par here, and you’ll have added momentum to finish this scenic nine.

HOMESTEAD #9 – This mid-length par 4 on Homestead’s Prairie Nine features a classic risk/reward challenge. Start with the split fairway – choose left for a shorter but trickier approach to the severely back-to-front sloping green, requiring an 80 yard carry over a lake. Choose right for a better angle to the green, but one that requires a longer drive to clear fairway bunkers center and right.

HOMESTEAD #17 – There’s not a lot of room for error on this sharply downhill par 3 with gorgeous views all around, from Denver’s downtown skyline in the east and a stunning perspective of Fox Hollow and Green Mountain as a backdrop to the north. Club selection is critical given frequent wind, a native grass penalty area short and bunkers short right and long of the green. The good news is that tee shots that land on the undulating green usually stay there. Making a 3 on this hole is good; making a 2 is indeed memorable.

FEATURED ORGANIZATION

FLEISCHER FAMILY FARM

2005 South Zephyr Court, Lakewood, CO 80227 412-973-8041 ▸ www.fleischerfamilyfarm.com

Our slogan and overall mission as a business is “building community through food.” Our volunteer days are a perfect example of one of the ways we strive to make our farm an integral part of our local food system and engage our neighbors and community members. We love seeing children from the neighborhood running around and playing, neighbors catching up, and altogether, we end up making some significant progress on the farm.

We started as a small, four-person Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program and are now up to more than 86 families. We accept SNAP and have several WIC members in our program and don’t want to exclude anyone in our community from accessing high-quality, nutritious and delicious produce.

We sell a wide range of vegetables, fruits and fresh-cut flowers. We have honey from our bees, homemade beeswax soaps, chicken and duck eggs and more. We also partner with other local producers and sell Huckleberry Coffee, mushrooms and Western Slope fruit at different times throughout the season.

The experience at Fleisher Farm is dependent upon the individuals volunteering. A lot of the work is prepping beds for planting, weeding, harvesting, laying ground cover to prevent weeds and other simple farm tasks. During our two main volunteer days, we have breakfast and coffee in the morning and a few beverages to close the day.

We also host two farm-to-table dinners each season where we bring in a local chef, musician and staff. We host the event outside on the farm, where attendees can see us harvesting the food, preparing the meal and serving as they enjoy the company of other community members and relax in a beautiful setting. We usually do five courses per meal and accept about 20 guests.

As for our classes, we offer an “Urban Homesteading Course,” which has four standalone classes. Attendees can take one or all four. We offer Beekeeping Basics, Backyard Chicken Keeping 101, Homemade Soap Making and Food Preservation classes. People can contact us through social media or our website to reserve seats.

To volunteer at the farm, simply contact Paul and Chelsie to coordinate details. Check Instagram, Facebook or the website for updates on dates and times.
