WELCOME TO THE
HINSDALE AREA!

Publisher

Editor
Greetings, and welcome to the community!
Whether you have just moved into a new home in Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills, Oak Brook or Burr Ridge, you can be secure in the fact that you have chosen a section of DuPage or Cook County that is overflowing in history, beauty, community involvement, philanthropic efforts and interesting things to do. Also within these four towns (and slightly beyond) are some pretty great businesses, and they are just waiting for you to give them a try.
We here at BeLocal are here to help. We are a family-run publication; I’m the Publisher and grew up in Clarendon Hills, went to Hinsdale Central High School and have lived in the area all of my life. Sue Johnson, who happens to be my mom, is the Editor, and has lived in Clarendon Hills for 40 years. We both have made countless contacts in the four communities this magazine is delivered to, and have talked with them and other residents to find out their absolute favorite places to frequent in the area – just so we can bring that information to you, in one publication!
How are we different than all of the other free magazines you will have poking out from your mailbox in the days and weeks to come? Well, in
one big way: We are specifically and totally geared to you, the new resident. Nowhere else will you find a directory that will give honest, local tips from people currently living here; articles and comments written by these residents because they want to help you – the person that has just moved in, has boxes scattered about, may be having a difficult time adjusting, and simply wants to know where the good and reputable businesses are.
Any business can advertise, but we have made a concerted effort to hunt down those businesses that we feel you will have a good experience with. Some of these clients that advertise with us have been running their business for decades. Others are much newer but have already built up a pretty loyal following – and for good reason; they offer good services at a fair price. Please give them a try!
Once the dust settles, and you are feeling more at home in your community, let us know if you’ve used a business that we haven’t mentioned or one that’s not currently advertising with us that you think we should be recommending to new residents. You can contact us at Belocalhinsdale@yahoo.com.
All the best in your new home, RYAN JOHNSON

Dr. Dima Sibai, DDS

By: Jenna Krukowski, Hinsdale Historical Society
In 1863, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad made the decision that put Hinsdale on the map. Instead of running a track through the established town of Fullersburg, located at what is now York and Ogden, railroad executives chose vacant land one mile to the south. Thus, the town of Hinsdale was born.
William Robbins is known as the founder of Hinsdale. In 1863, he purchased the area’s land for $20 an acre and gave the railroad the right-of-way through the property. He platted the village in 1865, taming the wild prairie by grading roads, planting trees and building homes for a new type of individual: the man who wanted to work in Chicago, but not live there.
Along with a few capable land developers, the fledgling town drew wealthy
OF HINSDALE A SHORT
HISTORY HISTORY
Chicagoans, German and Swedish tradesmen, and others. Each group contributed in creating a thriving village, and, in 1873, Hinsdale was incorporated. The original village boundaries were Chicago Avenue and Sixth Street on the north and south; Main Street (Garfield) on the east; and on the west, Grant from Sixth to Third and Lincoln from Third to Chicago Avenue.
Judge Joel Tiffany was the first president of Hinsdale. The cost of operating the village in 1873 was $410 with total tax receipts of $600. Until the 1890s, Hinsdale’s water came from wells and cisterns, light from kerosene lamps and candles, and heat from cast-iron stoves, fireplaces or kitchen ranges. Streets were merely direct and grass expanses defined by newly planted saplings. Cows, horses, and chickens were kept in backyards.
Advancements came rapidly, however, as the turn-of-the-century approached. Inspired by public-spirited citizens and vigorous newspaper editors, utilities were established and community improvements were made. Additional amenities were organized to further enhance the village such as a library (1887), golf course (1894), hospital (1904), and numerous service and social organizations.
In 1924, architect R. Harold Zook moved to Hinsdale and built his home at 327 South Oak Street, where he stayed until his death in 1949. Zook served on and chaired Hinsdale’s Architecture Committee and the first Plan Commission for 17 years. He designed approximately 34 homes and commercial buildings within the
Vintage Hinsdale

Village. Although most famous for the Cotswold style, he also created Tudor and Georgian structures.
The Memorial Building houses the village offices, the library, the American Legion, and Community Service. Built as a war memorial, it was dedicated on the Fourth of July, 1928 to those who served in the country’s wars. Privately funded, $200,000 was collected doorto-door for its construction.
Inspired by the Village’s centennial celebration in 1973, a group of residents gathered stories, data, and memorabilia that represented the history of the town. Due to the difficulties encountered while collecting the material, a permanent historical organization was created. In April 1975, the Hinsdale Historical Society was

chartered as a not-for-profit. In 1981 the Society acquired a permanent home – a beautiful Italianate Victorian home that today serves as a museum and home for the Society’s collections.
In the first decade of the new millenium, the Society preserved two more buildings-Immanuel Hall, a former church on Third and Grant streets, and the home and studio of local architect R. Harold Zook, which were moved to Katherine Legge Memorial Park. Immanuel Hall now serves as the home to the Society’s archives as well as the Roger and Ruth Anderson Architecture Center. The preservation of the Zook home continues today, one of the many ways the Hinsdale Historical Society continues to bridge the past and the present.
The Hinsdale Historical Society bridges the past, present, and future by engaging the community with its history and architecture. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on membership fees, private donations, fundraising events, and grants to support operations. The local history archives, located in Immanuel Hall, 302 S. Grant St., is open for research on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10:00 am-2:00 pm. The Hinsdale History Museum, 15 S. Clay St., can be toured on Fridays and Saturdays, noon-4:00 pm. daisy story THE CLARENDON HILLS
In 1870, Henry C. Middaugh (one of the earliest settlers of Clarendon Hills) purchased roughly 270 acres of land in the northeast part of what would ultimately become the Village of Clarendon Hills. Middaugh was exceptionally wealthy for someone living in Clarendon Hills at the time, and he wanted only the best of everything for his new property. He used his new land for an enormous mansion and a farm, complete with grazing fields for his cattle, sheep, and a few other animals. Middaugh’s exorbitant spending habits were not limited to his mansion alone, as he purchased only the best grass seed for his animals to graze on.
One year – while replenishing his grass seed – an error was made, and Middaugh received a shipment of daisy seed. Unfortunately, daisy seed looks the same as grass seed, and this error was not apparent until millions of daisies grew where there was supposed to be grass. Because of this error, Middaugh’s entire field was covered, as far as the eye could see, in daisies. Though Middaugh was quite aggravated that the error was made, the entire village (including Middaugh) was taken aback by the striking beauty of the daisies.
This “problem” wasn’t Middaugh’s alone for very long, because of the nature of daisies. Daisies are a sturdy and prolific plant, capable of surviving in very harsh conditions – like Midwestern winters – and spreading to new areas extremely quickly. It wasn’t long after Middaugh’s daisy fields spread throughout the village, and Clarendon Hills became known as “Daisy Fields.” Because of the easy access by train, countless people flocked to the beautiful village of “Daisy Fields” for afternoon walks, weekend visits, and picnics so they could be surrounded by hundreds of acres of daisies. Visitors and florists alike picked the daisies for friends, family, lovers, and customers.
The Village of Clarendon Hills celebrates the tradition of the daisy fields to this day with an annual Daisy Days celebration. The Daisy Days festival is a joyous occasion filled with live music, games, food, carnival rides, and most importantly, friends and family. While there may not be many (if any) daisies left in the village, everyone in Clarendon Hills knows the story of Henry Middaugh and the mistake that beautified an entire village culture.

THE GRAUE MILL
TO THE LOCALS, THE GRAUE MILL IS A VERY FAMILIAR IMAGE.
Situated in Fullersburg Woods, the mill dates back to the 1800s, when Frederick Graue settled in (then) Fullersburg, IL. Born in Germany, Graue came to the United States in 1842. He and his partner, William Asche, purchased the land where the Graue Mill was to be built. Much of the material in the mill comes from local sources. The limestone used for the basement walls was quarried in nearby Lemont, and the bricks for the rest of the walls in the mill were made from clay straight from the Graue farm and were fired in kilns near the mill. Much of the wood used in the mill was cut from white oak timbers located near the I & M canal. However, not everything was produced locally. The four buhrstones, weighing about 1 ton each, which were used for grinding were imported directly from France.
The mill was completed in 1852 and began operation. The main things that were ground at the mill were wheat, corn and other grains that were produced by the local farmers. Graue and Asche worked side by side for three years before Asche decided to sell his stock to Graue, leaving Graue to operate the mill by himself.
The Graue Mill was a major source of local economy in the 19th century and was even used by Frederick Graue to hide many runaway slaves during their journey to the freedom in Canada during the Civil War years. Graue was from a Piet German family and strongly opposed the slave trade here in the United States. It was reported that President Abraham Lincoln himself visited the mill during a trip he took from Chicago to Springfield.
Graue and his third son, F.W. “William” Graue, worked together in the mill for 70 years until they abandoned the building in the 1910s. By this time, the modern methods of milling had essentially made the old processes of milling obsolete. The building was added to the DuPage
County Forest Preserve District and in 1934, the mill was restored to the period in which it was used. The restoration was completed in 1943, but unfortunately it wasn’t really maintained. In 1950, the mill and the surrounding property was leased to the DuPage Graue Mill Corporation. This was an organization comprised of local residents who repaired the waterwheel and the gear system, and opened the mill as a museum.
In 1975, the Graue Mill was added to the National Register of Historic Places and in 1981, it was recognized as an Illinois Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Today, the mill takes on the look of a mill that was in operation between 1852 and 1868. During this period of time, the waterwheel was a popular mechanism used in mills. The famous waterwheel can still be seen today on the north side of the mill. The mill is located at 3800 S. York Rd., next to Salt Creek in Oak Brook, surrounded by the beautiful Fullersburg Woods.

“We have a family membership to the Brookfield Zoo – it’s such a great place to spend the day, or even just a few hours! We love to feed the giraffes, and my girls enjoy seeing the baby gorillas playing in the Tropic World exhibit. Brookfield Zoo has many seasonal events, with Zoo Lights during the holidays, live music in the summer and Boo at the Zoo in the fall. It’s a go-to place all year round!”

“My Sister Kate in Hinsdale is my favorite place to shop for my daughter. I always seem to find just what I’m looking for there. They have a nice collection of fashionable ‘big girl’ or tween styles instead of just a lot of cutesy stuff geared for younger kids. They always carry a great line of bathing suits, and it’s the perfect place to grab a quick birthday gift.”

THE HINSDALE AUXILIARY OF THE
Infant Welfare Society
Empowering Families, Nurturing Futures
By Candace Mueller
From single mothers facing insurmountable odds to families grappling with the weight of financial insecurity, everyone who uses the resources of IWS Family Health carries a unique story of struggle and triumph. This is why the efforts of the Hinsdale Auxiliary of the Infant Welfare Society (HIWS), along with the other seven chapters, is so critical.
HIWS was the inaugural chapter founded more than a century ago to assist families in need. It consists of a tight-knit group of 60 volunteers deeply committed to fundraising and aiding IWS Family Health, which serves the patients at the Angel Harvey Family Health Center in Chicago. The Center serves entire families, not just infants and children, with a continuum of full-service integrated, quality and preventative healthcare services. They also recently opened a pharmacy to further expand their
on-site services. The Center is witness to the resilience of mothers who emerge from broken homes, single parenthood, or teenage pregnancies, often having nowhere else to turn, find solace and support within their walls.
Amidst the challenges that threaten to overshadow their journey, there exists a glimmer of hope to provide not just medical care but also a sanctuary of empathy and understanding.

“I’ve witnessed firsthand the impact of our collective efforts in supporting IWS Family Health. Our commitment to fundraising and volunteerism is not just about writing checks or donating time—it’s about extending a lifeline to those in the Chicagoland community who are most vulnerable. By coming together as a community, we are helping ensure that no woman or family is left to navigate the challenges of healthcare and wellness alone. Our work is not just important; it’s essential,” said Candace Mueller, 2024-2025 HIWS President.
What does the Hinsdale Infant Welfare Society Do? Over the last five years, HIWS has contributed more than $600,000 to IWS Family Health.
The HIWS signature fundraising event Tablescapes is an annual luncheon that takes place in March every year. It’s a great way to kick off the spring season as guests enjoy a three-course lunch, live music, shopping from dozens of local, premiere boutiques, silent and live auction items and more. Attendees have an opportunity to bid on creatively curated tablescapes and vignettes that are often paired with an experience such as a DJ, mixologist or even pickleball lessons! Whether simple or elaborate, a well-executed tablescape can leave a lasting impression but their true value lies in their ability to foster connections and create memorable experiences for friends gathered around the table. One hundred percent of the proceeds generated from Tablescapes go toward the Angel Harvey Family Health Center.
HIWS also supports the Center through an annual fall/winter coat drive, a “baby shower” luncheon where members bring items for expecting and new mothers and Angel Baby Bags that provide baby essentials. Each year, HIWS donates 2,000 diapers, 100 cans of formula and hundreds of other baby supplies including strollers and pack‘n play playpens. Mother’s Day is a special time of year, where volunteers collect and package toiletry gift bags for 200 mothers who may not have an opportunity to access beauty and personal care products. They also collect and donate more than 200 warm coats each year through an annual coat drive and Warming Project. They also have a very active Junior Board comprised of 8th-12th graders who also support fundraising and collection efforts.
According to HIWS member Molly Painter Lucht, this is why she participates in the organization: “Hinsdale Infant Welfare Society unites our community, enabling us to support those in greatest need—the less fortunate among us. There are mothers struggling without necessities like diapers for their infants or access to prenatal care, things many of us overlook. Our mission is to ensure their well-being, both for them and their children, fostering happiness and good health.”
About the Angel Harvey Family Health Center
The Center provides healthcare services and education to more than 14,000 medically underserved and vulnerable Chicagoans including pediatric health and dentistry, pre-natal care, behavioral health, adult care and speech and occupational therapy. By offering these services free of charge or at a reduced cost, the funds raised through HIWS ensure that financial barriers do not prevent children from receiving the care they need to thrive.
How You Can Get Involved
As HIWS continues its mission of service and compassion, it relies on the generosity and support of donors, volunteers and community partners. Whether through financial contributions, volunteer hours, or advocacy efforts, there are countless ways for individuals and organizations to get involved and make a difference. For more information on HIWS, including how to sponsor or attend Tablescapes, or to donate, visit www.hinsdaleiws.com. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook @hinsdaleiws for updates.

Trinity Lutheran School: Celebrating 157 Years of Christ-Centered Education
In 1865, German farmers settled in the Hinsdale/Burr Ridge area and because education was so important to them, the first thing they built was a one-room schoolhouse. Since that time, Trinity has established a much larger campus and opened its doors to the community:
• Children of all faiths and cultural backgrounds are invited to enroll
• Families from 20 different zip codes and children representing more than 15 different nationalities attend our school
• Trinity students receive one-on-one attention and it shows in their test results
• Trinity is a private, nationally accredited elementary school for children in Preschool through 8th grade
Since its founding in 1865, Trinity Lutheran School has been preparing students from many cultures and religious denominations to succeed by promoting excellence in every area of scholastic achievement, and centering education on a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
One way that Trinity accomplishes its mission is

through our Christian Day School. Their teachers share the Gospel of Christ every day while teaching elementary subjects for two-year-olds through eighth graders. The students include members of Trinity Lutheran Church, members of other Lutheran churches, and children from the surrounding communities. The school is fully accredited by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, the Northern Illinois District, and fully recognized by the State of Illinois. They complete a rigorous accreditation evaluation by the LCMS every 5 years in order to maintain accreditation status. An independent review committee evaluates their facility, staff, and academic programs in order to make sure that they are maintaining an up-to-date curriculum and facilities, as well as implementing new curriculum as required by the state of Illinois. In addition to a complete elementary course of study, extracurricular activities in speech, instrumental music and athletics are offered.
Trinity students include members of Trinity Lutheran Church as well as members of other Lutheran and non-Lutheran churches, and represent many different cultures. Members of all faiths are welcome!
schools
The schools around the Hinsdale area are some of the very best in the state, as well as the nation. Hinsdale Central High School ranks as the number-one public high school in DuPage County, the number-six public high school in the state and the number-40 public high school in the United States. Whether you’re in preschool or just about to graduate high school, you’re sure to get a quality education if you live here!

We love Trinity Lutheran School as the elementary school that we chose for our child. It’s small, which means more attention for each child; the families are close, and the children stay in the same class throughout. The Christian education here is excellent. - Jackie T.

We chose Zion Lutheran as our child’s preschool because it’s very evident that the Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum is adopted and supported by the entire staff. Classrooms are set up to be unique to each child’s individual learning needs and the preschool fully embraces that style of learning. The social/emotional part of the curriculum is also strongly covered here, and the community support that the school gives instills valuable life lessons for the kids.

Our family is fairly new to the western suburbs and we love Church of the Holy Nativity in Clarendon Hills. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming! There are programs for children as young as 3-years old and all the way up through adult. My favorite thing is that everyone is welcome and no one gets turned away-it’s all about faith, fellowship, and friendship. - Jennifer Z.

“Our family has been attending Christ Church of Oak Brook, a nondenominational Evangelical church, for the past three years. As soon as we enter those doors, the people are very welcoming, and it simply feels like our church home. From the worship music to the weekly messages, everything is Bible-based and brings such a relevance to our personal walk with God right now. They offer many programs, both for adults and children. Christ Church of Oak Brook meets you where you are, whether you’re a new believer or a seasoned one.” – Michelle C.

BB's Donuts one of a kind, quaint shop is located in Western Springs just 1 block west of Wolf Rd. and 1/2 a block south of the train tracks. As you drive by, the striped awnings, pink door and charming OPEN sign will catch your attention. You may even find the patio filled with customers and know right away that you must stop.
Deb, the donut lady, has been in business in Western Springs since 1995 when she opened her babystore called Beautiful Beginnings. In 2013 she decided to add Baby Donuts to the mix, therefore calling the donut shop BB's for Beautiful Beginnings and baby donuts for the Babystore! Deb believed that every new mom should have a treat to eat after giving birth and why not baby donuts? BB's still does designer trays in either pink or blue for new moms, dads and siblings.
BB's Donuts gives you the opportunity to have more than one flavor of donut without having to eat a full size donut. They are served by the dozen or half dozen and when you order you can choose up to 3 flavors in your order. Make sure to add a coffee or latte to your order. BB's carries their own blend of Intelligentsia and also offers a dark roast by Clancy Bros, roasted in Mokena. When you order Clancy you actually support two local residents as one of the Clancy brothers lives in WS as well.

BB's started with a pick up window and opened for indoor seating in 2014. When Covid hit, Deb was able to implement her original pick up window and never looked back. It's not unusual to find the BB's patio filled with families enjoying everything about BB's and meeting up with friends or even making new friends.
Make sure to try BB's special lunch box. Served daily from 11 to 2, BB's lunch box offers "Grandma's" hot dog sold no where else in the state of Illinois, chips, homemade dip (for your chips or even your hot dog) and 2 donuts for dessert. It's sure to be something you will enjoy.
BB's looks forward to welcoming you to the neighborhood. Stop in for donuts, coffee or lunch and Deb and her staff will be sure to make you happy you came.

the morton
arboretum
We love going to The Morton Arboretum in Lisle! Both my husband, Don, and I have gone since we were children. Back then our parents drove us through the grounds, and we enjoyed the beautiful trees and small lakes. What a difference 70 years makes! Now there is a beautiful children’s garden where the kids (and adults) can wade and watch tadpoles, safely enclosed suspension bridges everyone can walk or run through, many bridges and tree houses, creeks, slides, and an amazing maze that our grandchildren love to get lost in! There is a beautiful visitor center with an excellent restaurant and café, and seating inside or outside with a beautiful view of their trees and Meadow Lake. Picnics are also welcome, and there is seating inside, outside or anywhere on the grass or a bench amongst

the trees and flowers. Of course, there is also a wonderful gift shop, which I frequent. Their merchandise is very high-quality, unique and geared to both adults and children.

In 1922 The Morton Arboretum was established by Joy Morton, founder of the Morton Salt Company and son of J. Sterling Morton, originator of Arbor Day. Back then it was only 178 acres adjacent to his estate in Lisle, and now it’s grown to 1,700 acres. He called it a “great outdoor museum” of trees, and it certainly is. Being roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Oak Brook and Burr Ridge makes it a perfect place to spend time hiking, biking, or, in the winter, cross-country skiing or snow shoeing. Bicycles, snowshoes and skis can be rented at the Arboretum. There are also tram rides provided, running from spring through the fall. One of our favorite things last year was the Full Moon Tram Tour and hike, during which you can possibly see an owl or other nocturnal critters. They have education programs for adults and children and provide a huge variety of events throughout the year. We love their holiday experience, Illumination: Tree Lights at the Morton Arboretum. The Arboretum trees have thousands of lights on them as well as some very unusual lighting effects and displays. The kids can hug a tree, and it will light up – very

popular! There is also a large indoor model train exhibit, called Enchanted Railroad, every January and February manned by volunteers that your children will enjoy.
The Arboretum’s next major exhibition will be Human + Nature, featuring five original sculptures created exclusively for the Arboretum. The exhibition will be there for a year, open June 12, 2020. There is always something to look forward to, and there are always plenty of birds, turtles, frogs, toads and fish to enjoy. In the spring, the Crabapple Collection is unbelievable, as are the beautiful spring flowering bulbs, especially the daffodils on the west side, as well as the crocuses. There are benches everywhere for a little R&R – my husband loves those! The hiking trails are well-maintained, as are the roads.
The Morton Arboretum is widely respected all over the world for their scientific research and tree conservation. Their website (www.mortonarb.org )is full of valuable information, and there is even a plant clinic for all kinds of tree and plant help. We are so fortunate to have such an amazing place right in our neck of the woods! Joining as a member not only helps you and your family but benefits the Arboretum and its valuable research and tree conservation efforts. We’ve been members for more years than we can remember and always will be. Please be sure to plan a visit and hopefully become a member. You definitely won’t regret it. Everything you need to know is on their website!

Eagle Restaurant has been serving Downers Grove and the surrounding areas for over 40 years. Located at 406 Maple Ave, this family owned and operated business opened its doors to the community stressing quality, service and cleanliness since day 1.
Owner, John Zografos, was born and raised in Clarendon Hills. He grew up in the business, having worked in many other establishments, learning the trade. His father, Lee, came to town in 1972 opening Towne Kitchen. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, Towne Kitchen was a staple in downtown Clarendon Hills for many years.
In 1981, Lee stumbled upon a closed gas station sitting on a neighborhood corner in Downers Grove and had a vision. He envisioned a casual fast food restaurant that would serve quality food with friendly service that would last for generations. Since 2005, his son John has been continuing that vision.
Eagle Restaurant has a wide variety of options serving homemade soups, fresh salads, delicious burgers, marinated grilled chicken sandwiches, and of course their famous Gyros. Eagle takes pride int heir homemade soup. Made with only the freshest vegetables and ingredients and never adding any MSG, Eagle's hearty soup is a must-try. And of course, their homemade Italian Beef is a must try! They are always willing to cater your next event!

Established in 1981, Eagle Restaurant has been a family-run business that focuses on quality, cleanliness and service every day. All of our food is fresh and made to order, including our salads. Soups are homemade daily and the Italian beef is seasoned to perfection. You can’t stop by without trying our local favorite, the Gyros!
