GILBERT

about the COVER
Originally built in 1927, the Water Tower instantly became a town icon and source of great pride for all the members of the Gilbert community where it served to store water for firefighting and later stored drinking water until 1985. When the water tower went out of service the fate of the water tower was in question, however the Gilbert Town Council took the necessary steps and the water tower was preserved.
Gilbert’s water tower, now preserved, is alongside an old adobe pump house that was originally Gilbert’s first jail. Added to the area are several water features to supplement the history and importance the water tower holds in the town. One such water feature is a 9.5-ton granite ball called a kugel ball. Give it a push and, with the help of a thin layer of water, you can direct all 19,000 lbs. of it where you want it to go!

GILBERT! WELCOME TO
WE ARE SO HAPPY YOU ARE HERE.

Whether you’ve moved across town or from another city or state, settling into a new area can be both exciting and overwhelming. Within the first few months, you will likely be establishing new routines, getting to know local hotspots, looking into local professionals and influencers, and exploring your new community’s vast resources. With so many nuances and so much on your plate from this new chapter in your life, it can be daunting to think about everything you need to do to get used to your new surroundings.
When we moved to Gilbert six years ago, it was quite the transition. Starting over can be tough, especially when you have kids. We chose Gilbert because we had heard such great things about the safety of the area, the school district, and the people! After our house was finished being built there were SO many “projects” (as my husband calls them) to get done it was overwhelming. From backyard design to built-ins, the list was never-ending. To add to our plates, we didn’t know a single soul here. Meeting people and learning about the things to do around town took time, not to mention a lot of work! For this reason, among others, I’m truly passionate about community connection, which BeLocal more than provides!
I hope you will find this resource guide helpful as you get settled into your new home. Additionally, the businesses listed throughout this publication are locally owned and not only provide the best services and products but also truly care about our community. Therefore, I would encourage you to give these

PORTER (BLUE) HAUGHT
WELCOME TO GILBERT

HELLO AND WELCOME TO GILBERT.
I moved here in the late 1980s because, like you, Gilbert’s high quality of life seemed like a perfect fit for my then-young but growing family.
Since then, Gilbert has transformed from a small town of less than 60,000 to the largest “town” in the nation, with a population just below 300,000. Gilbert consistently and constantly receives accolades and recognition for being one of the safest cities, the best place to raise a family, the most prosperous city, and the best city for business.

Gilbert has vintage and deep Western roots supported by a young, vibrant community fueled by a strong economy.
Gilbert’s residents value education and the many excellent schools continue to be a top reason people choose to move to here. Gilbert boasts award-winning dining, a thriving Heritage District, engaging outdoor activities and fun-filled community events.
Gilbert is a community with a heart for service to others, offering many opportunities to engage, connect, and make a difference through volunteerism, non-profits, and kindness.
On July 6, 2020, Gilbert celebrated its 100th birthday! Gilbert’s leaders remain focused on keeping the thriving community that is the Gilbert we love today well into the future, so we invite you to join us in writing Gilbert’s story for the next 100 years.
Moving here was the best decision my family ever made and every day there are more great things coming to Gilbert.
Welcome!

timeless treasures name that landmark!

Many of Gilbert’s old buildings still stand today, offering a glimpse into the town’s rich history, though their purposes have evolved over time. Once bustling centers of commerce or community gathering spots, these structures now serve as charming cafes, unique shops, or office spaces, blending the past with the present.

THE BANK OF GILBERT
The Bank of Gilbert was built in 1917 and the structure still stands on the southeast corner of Page Avenue and Gilbert Road. It is now an Allstate Insurance office. The bank had a walk-in vault that is still there today!
STREETSCAPE WITH SIGN
In the 1940’s town residents hung a sign over the intersection of First Street (Page Avenue) and Main Street (Gilbert Road). From that point forward, along with the Gilbert Depot and Gilbert Water Tower, the Gilbert sign was a distinguishing feature that set Gilbert apart from her nearby neighbors.
BLAKELY MOTOR COMPANY
Seen here in 1938 during a flood, Blakely Motor Company was started in 1929 by Charles M. Blakely. Model T’s could be purchased at Blakely’s originally and later it was turned into a garage and gas station. During the 1940’s customers would receive a piece of Blakely Glass with every fill up. Blakely Automotive is now known as Norwood Furniture.

DUBLIN & PAGE
Originally built in 1910 it housed the Ayers Grocery Store and eventually came to be owned by partners Walter M. Page and W.W. Dublin. The building is now part of the north end of present-day Norwood furniture. Dublin & Page sold groceries and dry goods and Mr. Page brought an expertise in refrigeration of food products. It was a nice benefit for our small community to have such a modern store at the time (early 1920’s).

LIBERTY MARKET
The Liberty Market was built in 1930 and was owned by Eddie and Edith Dong. In 1938 a part of it was consumed by fire that broke out in the living quarters located behind the store. The store was remodeled and became one of the largest grocery stores in Gilbert. In 1943 Ben and Mae Ong bought the store and in 1958 they doubled its size and added a new neon sign that Mae designed. That same sign is still on the building today.

your
school
Moving to a new school district in most cases is fairly straightforward; however, in Arizona, it often poses MANY questions as there are several K-12 tuition-free options to explore!

The Gilbert area offers varied options for K-12 District and Charter School, tuition-free education. Here you’ll find a brief overview of some options to consider.
Gilbert has a premier education system and offers many choices and experiences for families. Researching and exploring the tuition-free (District and Charter) school options is essential in the decision-making process. Reflecting and knowing what experience suits your child and family is the next best step, whether it’s online research or setting up tours for an in-person experience.
Whether you chose a district or charter school, there is a process of enrollment that varies from school to school. School Choice and public tuition-free schools set Arizona aside from numerous states across the country. Choices are plentiful and the doors are open regardless of your address.

A Local’s Perspective to Help Guide Your Educational Decision!
Local resident Kelli Beard found the below checklist helpful in guiding her family’s educational pathway!
Does the school offer different experiences (Classical Liberal Arts, Gifted, Montessori, Performing Arts, Traditional, Special Education, etc.)?
Is the proximity of the school important to you? Do you need/want preschool, K-6, 7-12, within minutes of each other?
Does the school’s calendar schedule work for your family?
Is the arrival/dismissal process streamlined and well organized? Does it work with your schedule?
Do you need before/after care? Does the school offer it at times you need?

“San Tan Charter School was the final tour of many before we made the decision to move forward with registration. It was the ‘We have an educational journey that suits your growing family!’ that ultimately put our choice at ease.” – Kelli B.
Are there reasonable class sizes and above-average classroom resources?
What is the school’s teaching approach (large-group direct instruction/smallgroup project-based)?
What are the homework expectations and uniform options? Do they align with your family’s wants?
What is the school’s curriculum? Does the school offer electives, specials, access to EVIT and/or extracurricular activities that are important to you? Are they available to every child?
What is the school’s recess and discipline philosophy, and how is it implemented? Does it align with your beliefs?
What parent involvement is allowed/ encouraged in the classroom setting? Are there opportunities for parents and/ or grandparents to volunteer?

Top-Notch Services For
Women, Men and Children
By Rich Ganley, Local Resident
Taking care of oneself has never seemed so important as it is today. If the challenges of the current world situation have taught us anything, it’s that health and wellness must take priority above all else. Unfortunately, studies show the very act of moving has been deemed as stressful as a divorce. That intense level of strain wreaks havoc on both our mental and physical health. After experiencing a stressful life event such as a big move, it’s vital to take the time to unpack your stress.

When considering ways to handle your post-move-in stress, you may want to turn to your nearest beauty lounge and med spa. Not just for special occasions or while on vacation, treatments at a medical spa can prove to do wonders for you inside and out. Here are some services to think about to help combat tension and stress:
Do yourself a favor and check out IV Nutrient Therapy (vitamin drips or injections). go far clean cars

AVOID “SUNBURN” ON YOUR PAINT
Arizona sun can be brutal on your car’s paint job, causing fading, oxidizing and even failure, which leads to costly repainting. Keeping your paint protected with a ceramic coating, paint sealant or wax helps provide your paint with protection from UV rays (think of it as automotive sunblock) and, of course, gives it a deeper gloss and higher shine.
TWO IS BETTER THAN ONE

When washing your car, have at least two separate sets of wash mitts, wash buckets and drying towels. One mitt, towel(s) and bucket should only be used on your paint and glass; the other mitt, towel(s) and bucket should be used for more grungy work, like cleaning your tires and wheels. This helps avoid scratches or “swirls” in your paint by keeping nasty grime off your paint.
WASH WHEN IT’S COOL OR SHADED
Arizona has notoriously hard water — and this is horrible for your car. Avoid washing your car in direct sunlight or when the surface is extremely hot. This will help keep the water from drying too quickly, causing ugly and sometimes permanent water spots. If possible, wash with “soft” or deionized water.

STREAK-FREE GLASS — IT’S ALL IN THE TOWEL
Have a set of towels (preferably microfiber) used only for cleaning your windows. This helps avoid buildup in your towel of dirt, oil, wax or anything else that would cause streaking. Use this with your favorite (ammonia-free) window cleaner, and you’ll notice a drastic difference in how clean your windows can get.

DAY TRIPS
CASA GRANDE RUINS ▸ South of Phoenix in the town of Coolidge, the ruins hold an ancient Sonoran farming community and great house, as well as a small visitor center with historical artifacts.
GRAND CANYON ▸ The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the nearest rim to Phoenix, though it is still about a 4-hour drive. So, it can be done in an (exhausting) day trip from Phoenix, it would probably be more enjoyable to spend the night at a South Rim hotel. Another option is to take an organized tour so you don’t have to drive yourself. Visit nps.gov for more information.

SEDONA ▸ Surrounded by stunning red rock formations and national forests, Sedona is popular with outdoor enthusiasts who like to hike, bike and ride off-road vehicles through scenic terrain. Considered sacred by Native Americans, Sedona is also a place to visit to become spiritually renewed or to indulge in luxury spa treatments. Located just 115 miles from Phoenix.
LOST DUTCHMAN STATE PARK ▸ Located at the base of the Superstition Mountains and just 40 miles east of Phoenix, this State Park is named after the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine, a famous gold mine legendary among the tales of the Old West. Visit azstateparks.com for more info.
LOCAL TIP

“Lost Dutchman State Park is a can’t-miss! Hiking trails and guided informational hikes lead by Park Rangers make for a fun day trip when you just want to get out and explore!” – Arron H.
FLAGSTAFF ▸ Just a little over two hours north of Phoenix, Flagstaff is a popular quick destination for a year-round change of scenery. In the winter, the locals head here to see snow, ski, or go snow tubing and, in the summertime, to escape the heat and enjoy some hiking and rock climbing! Northern Arizona University gives rise to that small college-town feel and vibe.
SAGUARO LAKE ▸ Located in the far East Valley of Arizona, Saguaro Lake is great for boating, fishing, and swimming. Best to head out early when the weather is nice, as the lake gets FULL very quickly.
KARTCHNER CAVERNS STATE PARK ▸ Home to the world’s largest stalactite formation and Arizona’s tallest natural column formation below ground level. Tours must be booked in advance, and you’re expected to arrive one hour prior to your tour time.
MONTEZUMA CASTLE ▸ About an hour and half north of Phoenix, Montezuma Castle features one of America’s best-preserved cliff dwellings. Dating back to the 12th century and used by the Sinagua civilization, this five-story structure of 20 rooms resembles an ancient high-rise apartment complex. An ideal place to stop and stretch your legs if traveling from Gilbert to Sedona.

Head to Dogtopia of Gilbert for a fun day with other pup friends or for a longer stay while your humans are out of town! - Gilbert G.
GOOD HUMAN!
Welcome to Gilbert! In you’re new to the state you’re on-board to see an abundance of natural beauty all around you. However, Arizona is home to numerous plants, animals, and weather conditions that can be dangerous to canines big and small. From scorpions and tarantulas, plant predators to extreme heat, and Valley Fever, these are just a few of the state’s greatest dangers to your pet. The best way to keep your dog safe is to be knowledgeable about your new home so that you’re prepared in the event of an emergency.
EXTREME HEAT
Probably the biggest weather risk your pooch faces in Arizona is extreme heat. Introduce your pup to the new climate as gradually as possible, especially if you come to the area in the summer. Pets with short, light-colored fur, especially on their ears, are especially susceptible to sunburns and skin cancer. Talk to your vet about a good dog sunscreen if you think yours may be at risk.
One of the most important things to remember is to never, under any circumstance or deadline, leave your dog in a parked car. On a warm day car interior temperatures can rise rapidly to dangerous levels, even with a window cracked, and the longer you’re gone, the hotter it gets. Leaving a dog in this condition is not only cruel torture, but it can also cause irreversible organ damage and even death in less than five minutes. Another good rule-of-thumb is that if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s feet!
VALLEY FEVER
Valley Fever is caused by a fungus that lives in the desert soil in the southwestern United States. Like people, dogs are very susceptible to Valley Fever. As part of its life cycle, the fungus grows in the soil and dries into fragile strands of cells. The strands are very delicate, and when the soil is disturbed - by digging, walking, construction, high winds - the strands break apart into tiny individual spores. Dogs and other animals mainly acquire Valley Fever by inhaling these fungal spores in the dust and air. The dog may inhale only a few spores or many hundreds. The most common early symptoms of Valley Fever in dogs: coughing, fever, weight loss, lack of appetite, and lack of energy.

With mild winter temperatures and picturesque backdrops, Arizona’s golfing scene creates an inviting and unforgettable setting for players of all skill levels.
What Is Overseeding?
Arizona’s extreme tempera tures, both hot and cold, make it difficult for a single type of grass to thrive year-round. Overseeding is the process of changing the grass from the natural Bermuda grass to a variety that can handle the low winter temperatures. Bermuda grass that is not overseeded will turn blonde when dormant. This process ensures consistent playing conditions throughout the year.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING AN ATHLETIC PROGRAM WITH YOUR CHILD
WHETHER YOU’RE NEW TO ARIZONA OR MOVED TO GILBERT FROM ELSEWHERE IN THE STATE, PARENTS HAVE A LOT TO CONSIDER WHEN IT COMES TO SELECTING PROGRAMS FOR THEIR CHILDREN TO PURSUE THEIR PASSIONS. GILBERT HAS TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG ATHLETES, AND MANY HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL INDIVIDUALS ARE PROUD TO CALL GILBERT THEIR HOMETOWN.
Parents considering extracurricular programs and activities for their children may be weighing factors like the level of competitiveness, opportunities for scholarships, or the quality and success of the programs.
Here are some of the frequently asked questions to consider when choosing an athletics program for your child:

What kinds of opportunities are available in Gilbert? Gilbert is a diverse community with a wide variety of opportunities for children to thrive outside of an academic setting. From private coaching to school teams, opportunities range from youth recreational basketball camps to AIA sanctioned High School Girls Flag Football.
What age is best to start?
While some programs offer athletic experiences as early as tumbling class for toddlers, many parents choose to explore a variety of activities with their preschool-aged children before starting organized teams, classes or clubs at the elementary or middle school level. Youth leagues are available through local associations or the Gilbert Parks and Recreation Department. Many local elementary schools offer after school sports leagues, running club, and other programs for students as well.
Are there opportunities for parents to get involved? Aside from volunteering to assist, coach, or contribute to a club or youth league in the area, many clubs and athletic programs also have official booster clubs that raise funds for equipment, competition, and other opportunities for the program.
What about elite competitive activities? Gilbert is home to a variety of high performing athletes including Olympic gymnasts MyKayla Skinner and Alex Naddour. Private gym and coaching options are available across the East Valley, as well as flexible academic options. Public school districts in Gilbert offer virtual school options that allow students to work around their own schedule.

LOCAL TIP

“Higley High School’s coach and his staff have shown dedication to all my boys regardless of position or personality. We have grown with Higley and it has been remarkable to see the success continue. HUSD truly knows the meaning of BE family, BE community, BE local.” – Karlee Hall, Higley High School Football parent

How are high school athletic programs regulated? There are two regulatory bodies for high school athletics and activities in the state of Arizona. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) comprises all but three of the state’s public district high schools, various charter and private schools. The AIA is also a member association of the National Federation of State High School Associations, the body that writes the rules of competition for most high school sports and activities in the United States. The Canyon Athletic Association is a separate regulatory body in Arizona serves small non-traditional education institutions including charter schools, public schools, home school organizations, and parochial schools.

What about college recruitment and scholarship opportunities? The East Valley is home to many successful athletic programs including state championship winning teams in Baseball, Football, Track, Softball, and more. College scouts often attend club tournaments to recruit talented athletes, many of whom play in club leagues during their school team’s off-season. School coaches also play an active role in facilitating recruitment visits for their athletes who are looking to continue competing at the university level.

If we aren’t at a swim meet or dance competition, we like to visit the Gilbert Farmers Market and have brunch nearby…usually at Liberty Market or Prep & Pastry. We also love to go on bike rides around the area as there are so many fun places to ride to, such as the Riparian Preserve or Agritopia.
Where/what do you like to go/do on a date night?
We are big foodies, so we always like to try new restaurants together. Right now, our go-to is Buck & Rider, but we really want to try Origen and Blu Seafood, both which recently opened at Verde Gilbert. If we have more time we like to throw in a fun activity, whether it’s going to the gym together, shooting some rounds at Continental Gilbert Gun Club, battling each other in Pac-man at Level 1 Arcade, or wine tasting at Cooper’s Hawk.

Through various private-public partnerships and advocates for artistic design, multiple surprising aesthetic elements have been incorporated that operate primarily for functional purposes but serve as delightful reminders that while humanity loves utility, we also love beauty.
Currently, there are several murals in the downtown area, decorative benches, unique lighting elements, aesthetic choices in signage, a kugel fountain, and “iconic roadside architecture.”

Seattle has pigs, Norfolk has mermaids, neighboring Chandler has ostriches, and Gilbert has begun their collection of artfully decorated illuminated benches. Why benches? Gilbert is often described as one of the most comfortable communities in the country, thus comfortable chairs serve as an appropriate symbol of the town.
MAP TOUR

Many different water elements dot the Downtown Gilbert landscape. There are several unique reminders of the significance of water that contribute to a thriving life in the desert.

The curved path running north of Park University and Heritage Market Place mimics waves and the blue glass speckled in the path mimics water.
STOP 2
STOP 3

This far-west water feature north of Park University is called Lateral Deluge.* It is a large water fountain mimicking the way we recycle water in the desert. It is pieced together like a series of canal delivery ditches spilling into one large pool. The metal is from old SRP well casings. The plaza here is in concentric circles to demonstrate the ripple effects of water when, say, a stone is tossed into it.

The middle water feature by Heritage Market Place is called Reservoir Gorge* and is intended to represent all the reservoirs in Arizona. The boulders here are salvaged from the canal and reutilized. The stonework here is incorporated from old SRP turnouts. Like Lateral Deluge, the plaza here is also in concentric circles mimicking ripples.

STOP 6

STOPS 7-16
Just east of Reservoir Gorge are two water features on either side of Gilbert Road called Delivery Falls* and are reminiscent of standpipes still seen sometimes in agricultural areas.
Murals are an engaging and vivid way to spark curiosity about a community’s priorities and its interests. They can inspire people to learn more about the community and its leaders. They can also awaken people to perspectives they perhaps haven’t had the opportunity yet to explore. There are at least 13 murals in Downtown Gilbert, and the number appears to be growing. Some of the murals depict historical scenes, others are a bit more contemporary.

STOP 4
STOP 5
STOPS 18-19
Heading south on Gilbert Road, on the east side, there is this beautiful and thoughtful mural, found on the wall of Casa de Gilbert that faces north toward the Gilbert Chamber.

STOPS 22-24
According to a document called the Transportation Improvements Project, the design team developed an aesthetic concept rooted in Gilbert’s history: “In honor of Gilbert’s agricultural history and the importance of the town’s cotton production to the state … the design team replicated the agricultural history through use of sandblasted concrete into the roadway and sidewalk. Giant rings of catenary lighting hover over the roadway to provide an enhanced visual effect.”

“We love to take the kids to the Gilbert FEASTival as they have over 15 food trucks, live music, art and fun for the whole family.”
– Kris L.
STOP 24
If you travel one street south to East Vaughn Avenue, you will discover another homage to Gilbert’s agricultural history where lines mimicking strands of hay are sandblasted into the sidewalk. Don’t forget that Gilbert was considered the hay-shipping capital of the world!

But don’t just take our word for it. Take theirs.

Gilbert is one of the fastest-growing communities in the country. There were only 500 residents when the town was incorporated in 1920. Since 1980, the population has doubled every five years. But how did this small desert community come to have such explosive growth in just over 30 years? Early pioneers began arriving in 1890, and in 1902, the Arizona Eastern Railway decided to build a rail line from Phoenix that went through Florence to the mining town of Kelvin. After purchasing land from Bobby Gilbert, a depot was built in 1905, and the town began to grow. Because of the creation of canals and Roosevelt Dam, Gilbert became a thriving agricultural community. In 1971, Gilbert had less than 2,000 residents, and in 1975, the town council approved a land annexation that added over 53 square miles to Gilbert. In 2014, that population number approached 250,000. By 2040, Gilbert is expected to be the fourth-largest community in Arizona with approximately 330,000 residents.

Gilbert Elementary School
Gilbert Elementary School was built in 1913 and originally had four classrooms, an auditorium, no air-conditioning and no inside plumbing. In 1917, a north wing was added, and in 1925 the south wing was added. The school closed for classroom use in 1977 and reopened as the Gilbert Historical Museum in 1982. It is the only building in Gilbert listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
William Bobby
Born in Missouri in 1859
William M. Gilbert was 23 when he came to Arizona and settled in the Mesa area. He grew up admiring Robert E. Lee and chose the nickname of “Bobby.” He was very active in buying and selling real estate in the East Valley. For $1.25 an acre, Bobby Gilbert purchased 160 acres of land bound by what is now Gilbert Road to the east, the Western canal to the north, the half-section line to the west and Elliot Road to the south. In 1902 Bobby Gilbert sold land to the Phoenix and Eastern Railroad company. In 1905, the train depot was built; the spur track was named Gilbert, and the rest is history!

Gilbert Airport
In 1945, the Gilbert airport was built. It was located where the swimming pool and park area next to Mesquite Junior High now sits. Flight lessons, crop dusting, and sightseeing trips were all conducted out of the Gilbert airport.

Creed’s General Store
The Creed family came to Gilbert in 1912 and, not long after, opened the Creed Grocery Store. The building was made of adobe blocks that were created from the earth excavated from the basement. Today this building is Sassy's Cafe & Bakery by day and Jester's Comedy Club by night.
Picnic Picture
This photograph from about 1913 shows early Gilbert residents enjoying a town picnic. It was customary to gather for picnics on the banks of the Consolidated Canal under the shade of the cottonwood trees.

Gilbert High School
In 1920 at a cost of $125,000 the first high school in Gilbert was built. However, the first graduating class of Gilbert High School was actually the class of 1918, which consisted of four members. The commencement ceremony was held under large tents on the lawn of the elementary school since the high school was under construction. The building is still in use and is now home to the Gilbert Unified School District administration offices.
