about the COVER
One of the pleasures of living in Elk Grove is that you can count on beautiful sunsets. This is due to the agricultural haze and the pollens that blow into the Central Valley from the Bay Area. I enjoy seeing the amazing gradient this creates, so I chase the sunset every chance I get. This spot drew my attention because of the California Oak tree silhouetted in the foreground as the cloud formation gave great depth of field. To this mix, you add the colors and snap, you capture one precise moment in the artwork of our ever-painted skies.

ELK GROVE HISTORY
THE EARLY DAYS

Sierra Miwoks
The Sierra Miwok’s were the first dwellers of the area and enjoyed seven varieties of oak trees, a relatively moderate climate, and a rich variety of fishing in the Cosumnes River. (Ko-sum is the Miwok name for salmon and how the Cosumnes River got its name.)
The Elk Grove Historical Society website contains a lot of information, including 50+ local history articles. You will be entertained and amazed!
Agriculture
Elk Grove is known as a rich dairy and agriculture area for growing a variety of crops in its fertile soil. Wheat was a mainstay, but over time many other crops emerged. Among them were corn silage, hops and of course wineries; all made big impacts on the area.

Stage Stop

The Elk Grove House & Stage Stop Museum is the centerpiece of Heritage Park. Heritage Park is a small park consisting of many artifacts and museums: the 1850 Stage Stop, the 1853 Foulks House, the 1911 town jail and blacksmith shop, and the 1872 Rhoads School in the center of Elk Grove Park. The museum was a stage stop on the Monterey Trail from New Helvetia (Sutter’s Fort) to Monterey, the Mexican capital. It was built in 1850 by James Hall, who enjoyed the Tule Elk and seven varieties of oak trees in the area. It stood alone and was the first known recorded name of Elk Grove. It was later sold to the Brown family who built a barn and used it as a dairy for many years. The original location was in the northbound lane of Highway 99, but it had to be torn down in the mid-1950s, and a replica was erected just 100 yards east and where it stands today. The rich stories involving each building provide some interesting history to our small community. There are free tours every first Saturday of the month and many events throughout the year.

Elk Grove Railroad and Railroad Depot
In 1868 the second rail line out of Sacramento came through Elk Grove, and it connected us to Stockton and the rest of the world. For some reason, it was built a mile east of Buckner and became the third and final Elk Grove location as all commerce moved to the boarding station. Instead of hauling goods or visiting people in other towns by horse-drawn wagons, taking hours and days to move goods, they could now send or receive items within just a few hours. Later two more rail lines came through the area in 1910; one was located to the west and went through Franklin, and it is still in use today. The second was the Traction line to the east that went through Sheldon. This line had a third electrified rail and was later abandoned.
Town of Buckner
The small town of Buckner was built just a few years later than the Stage Stop and was located just a mile north. A Post Office was added, and it is known as the second Elk Grove location.

Elk Grove High School
In 1893, the second high school in the county was built in Elk Grove. It wasn’t until 1977 that Valley High School became the second high school built in the Elk Grove Unified School District. The first high school, Sacramento High, was built in the middle of town. Elk Grove High School was unique because it was in a rural community where families wanted their children to attend elementary schools to learn to read, write, add and subtract, but when they became older, they wanted the children to stay home to help with the farming and the house. Wise community members went house to house and ultimately raised enough funds and support to construct the school.

This Mamma of 3 Littles Set Out to Explore Elk Grove, One Park at a Time!
Written by Elizabeth McCabe | Photography by Matt Spolidoro
“I moved to Elk Grove seven years ago,” says Erin Clabough. “I wanted to get to know the area better and started driving to green spots on the map.”
Her quest to discover the area’s parks started simply enough. Starting with one kid at a time, she would go to a local park, play for a little while, and go back home.
While visiting parks was a lot of fun, especially for her little ones, Erin soon found herself forgetting where these parks were! She laughs, “I needed to document that!” So she started a Facebook page, “Exploring Elk Grove CA,” to share her adventure with others.
As she writes on Facebook, “Just a mamma of 3 littles (8, 4 and 1) setting out to explore every park in Elk Grove. Come explore with me!”
One adventure soon led to another. Erin began visiting parks on May 24, 2016. On day trips, Erin went with her kids, Ethan (8), Lucy (5), and Hazel (22 months). Her husband Jeremy accompanied her on the evening trips. In the process, she has gained over 500 followers.
“I started out when Ethan was 5, before kindergarten,” says Erin. “It took us 3 years to complete all the parks. We visited our last one on August 1, 2019.” She still visits parks today and savors time with her family,

exploring everything they have to offer.
Let Kids Be Kids
At area parks, kids can run, jump and play. They can climb on themed treehouses, wander down the walking path, and discover the beauty of nature. Set time aside from iPads and video games and embark on good old-fashioned family fun!
What about the kids getting dirty? Erin laughs. “Kids are 100% washable. Let them be outside and allow them to get dirty.” One of her favorite memories was visiting Elk Grove Regional Park which has the biggest puddles when it rains. “The puddles that were up to the kids’ knees!” says Erin.
“The kids were soaking wet and jumped in the giant puddles,” recalls Erin.
“It’s something we can do together. Energy can be put toward something positive, rather than destroying the house,” she jokes. “It’s one of my favorite memories.”
Which Park is Best?
With so many parks, the possibilities for family time is limitless. Erin admits, “There were so many good parks, it was hard to choose a favorite.”

One park that left an impression on Erin and her family was Miwok Park. As Erin states, “It’s the only one made of all wood. At one point, it burnt down and was rebuilt by the community.” Not only does this park illustrate the resilience of the residents of Elk Grove, it shows their caring nature too.
In hot summer months, Erin and her kids love to cool down with a splash park. The kids like to get wet and have fun as evidenced by the smiles on their faces and their laughter. Their favorite splash park is Derr-Okamoto Park. “It had the best splash pad,” says Erin. “It also has water low to the ground.”
In the winter months, check out Elk Grove Regional Parks. With biking trails and a walking path, people can walk at their leisure and be out in nature.
Other popular parks were Betschart Park. As Erin writes on Facebook. “Great find! Really cool park. Two playgrounds and both have a jungle theme.” This park had so much to offer with giant spider webs, swings, spinners, and a teeter-totter. Not to mention a water fountain, bathrooms, soccer field, baseball field, and a walking path.
When it comes to a kid’s point of view, Erin’s kids loved the dinosaur-themed park, officially known as George Park. Erin raves, “My oldest child LOVES dinosaurs. I wish the park had been around when he was younger. This would have been the go-to park for everything. Dinosaur footprints in the concrete and dinosaur skeletons make this a well-thought-out park.”

“My oldest child LOVES dinosaurs. I wish the park had been around when he was younger. This would have been the go-to park for everything. Dinosaur footprints in the concrete and dinosaur skeletons make this a well-thought-out park.”
Advice for New Families
Erin has advice for newcomers to Elk Grove. She says, “Find the closest park you can walk to and enjoy it. Also, take responsibility for local parks. Pick up trash when you leave. Make sure you leave it better than when you found it.”
What should you bring on a trip to the park? If visiting a splash park, be sure to bring sunscreen, towels, a change of clothing, swimsuit, and an umbrella. Erin says, “Some parks don’t have the best shade. So bring an umbrella if you are going to be there for a while.” Sand toys for the sandbox are another great idea. When visiting any park, water and snacks are recommended.
Erin and her family are originally from the Bay area. They moved to Elk Grove seven years ago and are experiencing everything the area has to offer. Relive her journey to local parks on her Facebook page, “Exploring Elk Grove CA” and watch for upcoming events in parks. You’ll be glad that you did!

BEST LOCAL COFFEE & BOBA TEA
SHOPS IN ELK GROVE
Looking to get your daily cup of joe?
Local resident Ashley Cabigon is a coffee aficionado and has taste-tested countless cups of coffee in Elk Grove. She has chosen her favorites and is eager to share them with newcomers.

18 GRAMS COFFEE & TEA
9677 E. Stockton Blvd., Elk Grove || @18grams.916
Another great shop with all of the coffeehouse vibes! Their convenient location next to Highway 99 makes it easy to make a quick stop here on your way in and out of town. You can’t go wrong with any of the drinks on their menu, whether you need something strong (“18 to the Brain” – an iced quad shot!) or if you’re feeling sweet (“The Graham” with honey, cinnamon and vanilla hits the spot). My personal favorite is the “1987” – thoughtfully named after the year that the owner was born. It’s the perfect combination of sweet, bitter and creamy. Don’t skip on their baked goods either, such as their ube leche flan cake or their banana jackfruit muffins.
CAFÉ LA VIES
8775 Center Parkway, Ste. E300, Sacramento @cafelavies
Café la Vies will instantly make you feel at home when you walk through the door. Whether you need a heavy hitter to get your morning started (highly recommend the Vietnamese tiramisu coffee) or a light refreshing tea with fresh fruit on a warm afternoon, Café la Vies has the drink for you. They also have a wide array of matcha drinks (peach matcha latte is my go-to) as well as unique foam topping flavors like ube and egg!

RESCATE COFFEE
2475 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove || @rescatecoffee
This family-owned business offers an ever-changing specialty and seasonal drink menu, so I’m always excited to see what new creations they have up their sleeves. Their Horchata latte is my go-to, but don’t skip out on other great drinks like the monkey mocha or the seasonal gingerbread latte. On top of their delicious drinks, Rescate Coffee holds events to benefit programs in our community as well as raises funds to give back to local animal shelters. And, yes, you can bring your pups here!
TULE COFFEEHOUSE
9098 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove || @tulecoffeehouse
This is the newest coffee shop located right in the heart of Old Town Elk Grove! Their prime location made them a hit from day one - a line out the door is not an unfamiliar sight! It’s the ideal coffeehouse feel no matter the time of year, whether you want to sit in the cute and cozy interior or out front on one of the two spacious outdoor patios. Try out a latte with their house syrups and cold foams, and definitely don’t skip out on their breakfast sandwiches. The bun is buttery and toasted, and eggs are cooked to fluffy perfection. Grab a friend and pick up some caffeine, then take a walk around beautiful Old Town afterwards for the ultimate Elk Grove ambiance!
VINHOUSE TEA & COFFEE
8112 Sheldon Road, Ste. 200, Elk Grove || @vinhousesac
I’ve been a regular since day one when Vinhouse opened in 2019. Their hybrid menu of coffee drinks and milk teas makes this a great spot for both adults and teens. This is one of the few places you can get a Vietnamese coffee in town, and they even offer a few other variations of the traditional style. The jasmine tea macchiato is my favorite, but in the summertime, their strawberry green tea and guava passionfruit tea are the most refreshing.

boba tea
BRU TEA CAFÉ
9171 Elk Grove Florin Road #3, Elk Grove || @bruteacafe
This boba shop is easy to spot from their beautiful greenery and modern tropical wallpaper — the perfect backdrops to their popular Soy Mochi milk tea, which comes topped with a skewer of the most delicious and fresh mochi. For all the chocolate fans, be sure to try their Milo Cream Milk Tea, something you can’t find at any other shop! Bru Tea also now offers soy or oat milk alternatives at no extra charge, and that’s a win for all of us lactose intolerant milk tea fans!
MOO MOO
8698 Elk Grove Blvd., Elk Grove || @moomoo_teahouse
Moo Moo is another family-owned business with a creative mind behind the menu. They are also a hybrid coffee and milk tea shop, offering you drinks from an iced mint mojito coffee to a honeydew milk tea, and everything in between! Their fruit teas and smoothies always come with sweet ripened fruit, which is my favorite part of the Red Moon drink: raspberry jasmine tea with fresh strawberries and boba. And how can you resist that cute little logo?!
ROSE TEA LOUNGE
9160 E. Stockton Blvd., Ste 120, Elk Grove @rosetealounge
This boba shop made a grand entrance to the scene, with lines stretching around the building on their opening weekend. The extensive menu gives you plenty of reasons to come back and try them all! The crème brulee boba latte will definitely have you coming back wanting more thanks to the caramelized black sugar boba and torched crème brulee topping. The photogenic wall décor and lounge vibe here are the perfect background to your next Instagram post.

Make friends. Have a great time. That’s why we’re here. We are here to support their journeys to stay healthy, happy, and productive.”
The Senior Center of Elk Grove was originally in Old Town Elk Grove for about 30 years. “The seniors built the building,” says Christine. The building was added onto again and again before a deal was worked out with the city to build the Senior Center of Elk Grove and attach it directly to the Community Center. The new doors opened in 2020 before having to close for 19 months. After reopening in July 2021, they have been going strong ever since.

READING
Written By Emily Autenrieth
Welcome to Elk Grove, a city with over two dozen Little Free Libraries, an inclusive bookstore, and libraries staffed by people who care deeply about literacy.
“Literacy is a strong indicator for success in college and career,” says Elk Grove’s mayor, Bobbie Singh-Allen. Books also offer a unique opportunity to step into others’ shoes. Bethany Payne at Dillard Elementary sees her school’s library as a refuge and resource for every student, no matter their family’s income or status. Lori Hebenstreit, who works at the Franklin Elementary library, loves how books foster compassion and empathy in her students. This may be why bookish spaces are so welcoming. They offer a safe space to ask questions and build confidence in not just your reading skills, but your understanding of the world and yourself.
Bonnie Tam at Huntingon Learning Services reminds us, “Reading needs to be nurtured and practiced every day! Give children access to a variety of books, and show them that you love reading.” Read aloud every day, talk about what books mean to you, let kids choose their own books, and make a game out of reading. And if your child is a reluctant reader, Lindsey Peralta at GradePower Learning says they are likely struggling and simply need help finding a different approach to learning.
Elk Grove offers many opportunities to buy, borrow, or share books and build reading skills. It’s never too late to make reading a consistent part of your life!

5 FAVORITE LOCAL TRAILS IN OR NEAR ELK GROVE

1. ELK GROVE CREEK TRAIL AND LAGUNA CREEK TRAIL
Various Locations. Our favorites are at Jack E Hill Park – 9380 Porto Rosa Dr, Elk Grove, CA 95624, and by Leatherby’s Ice Cream at 8238 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95758. elkgrovecity.org (search for either trail name)
A favorite reason for living here, you can jump on the paved trail at multiple spots in Elk Grove – it’s so easy to get outside!
Why We Love It: It’s an easy way to get in a nice walk and exposure to a bit of nature without heading out of town. You can grab a coffee just off the path or walk to one of multiple playgrounds!
For the Young Ones (0-10): These trails are plenty wide and mostly flat. We’ve often motivated little ones to go for a walk by enticing them with playground time when we’re finished. If you’re interested in a great playground and wetlands to explore, Jack E Hill Park is a great place to start and end.

For the Big Kids (10+): There are educational signs along parts of the trails that older kids may enjoy reading, but as a “hike” or nature walk, it may be on the boring side for older kids unless they’re focused on getting in some cardio, walking with friends, or accompanying you on a bike.

Keep in Mind: There are typically a few walkers with dogs, but I’ve only ever seen dogs on leashes and held them close when passing. Be on the watch out for bikes, who hopefully ring before passing.
LOCAL TIP

Kayaking at the Cosumnes River Preserve opens up a whole new world of nature to you with deer, fox, otters, beavers, and more. Nearly 100,000 bats fly out after sunset from the Franklin Road Bridge each evening. It’s a great field trip for you or the whole family!” -Dave F.

2. STONE LAKES
1624 Hood-Franklin Road, Elk Grove, CA 95757
fws.gov/refuge/stone_lakes
The Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge is located south of Sacramento, in far west Elk Grove. The Blue Heron Trails is a paved trail that consists of just a mile of loops around managed wetlands.
Why We Love It: It’s enough of getting out in nature to feel refreshed, while still short and simple! You get away from the bustle of every day, but you’re not too
far away from home. In addition, the trail is completely wheelchair and stroller accessible and it’s free to get in!
For the Young Ones (0-10): Our little reader really enjoyed the eight environmental education panels at the four kiosks along the way.
For the Big Kids (10+): There are so many different kinds of birds that come through this area, they’ll enjoy spotting and identifying all of them. If you have an older kid dragged along who doesn’t

want to do the walk, they can sit and hang out in the pavilion in the center of the loops.
Keep in Mind: Do NOT use your GPS to get here or you’ll go crazy trying to find it. Traveling south on I-5, take the Hood Franklin Road exit. At the stop sign, turn right, heading west for about one mile. The entrance sign and turn lane will be on your left. The entrance gate is timed to open and close automatically just after sunrise and just before sunset. Also, the trail is completely exposed, so make sure to have your sun protection.

Collins Lake is a great camping spot for the whole family, and it is only 1.5 hours away! We always grab some ice cream on hot summer days after swimming in the lake.

3. COSUMNES RIVER PRESERVE
13501 Franklin Blvd Galt, CA 95632 ▸ cosumnes.org
Just about fifteen minutes south of Elk Grove on I-5, Cosumnes River Preserve is an ideal hiking and nature introduction for your family. It contains over 50,000 acres of wildlife habitat and agricultural lands!
Why We Love It: It takes no time to get Cosumnes River Preserve. The walks are laidback and simple, without being too simple but also not being too much of a challenge. We’re not avid bird watchers, but we were super excited to see many different kinds of birds. It’s also free!
For the Young Ones (ages 0-10): The paved path of the Wetlands Walk is great for those on wheels (stroller, wheelchair, etc.) and it’s also a relatively short hike. It allows kids a bit of freedom to run around, since it’s a mostly flat path (other than the initial bridge). To get further immersed in nature, take the River Walk to observe more plants, birds, animals, and discover the train tracks bridge.
For the Big Kids (age 10+): The River Walk may qualify as more of a “real” hike to adventurers looking for more than a paved path, as it winds its way along raised levees through a variety of habitats, including buttonbush thickets, native grasslands, Valley Oak riparian forest, cottonwood-willow riparian forest, and tule marsh. Also, Cosumnes River Preserve features a dock for you to launch your canoe or kayak from, which may be more of an interest for older kids.
Keep in Mind: The Wetlands Walk crosses over the main road, so be sure not to let little ones run too far ahead. Also, since most of the preserve is exposed, make sure to have sun protection.

A BIT FARTHER:
4. EFFIE YEAW NATURE CENTER
2850 San Lorenzo Way, Carmichael, CA 95608
sacnaturecenter.net
Effie Yeaw Nature Center is a little oasis in the middle of the Greater Sacramento area! It’s easy to get to, the trails are short and sweet, and there’s so much to observe and learn.
Why We Love It: The nature center itself has live animals (who doesn’t love seeing owls, snakes, and more?) and an Exhibit Hall that allows visitors to explore the natural and cultural history of the area. Make sure to grab a map and pay your $5 parking fee before heading out. We love all of the wildlife you’re able to see, including deer, birds (turkeys!), ducks, and tadpoles, just to name a few.
For the Young Ones (0-10): If you’ve taken your little ones on paved walks around town, this is a perfect next step to graduate up to dirt and more narrow trails (not designed for strollers or wheelchairs). Keep them close and enjoy a picnic by the river.

For the Big Kids (10+): If big kids are interested in bird watching, this is a great spot! We’ve seen many different kinds of birds and were recently introduced to the redbreasted sapsucker.
Keep in Mind: The American River can be fast flowing. Take every caution near the water’s edge, but enjoy!

5. HIDDEN FALLS REGIONAL PARK
7587 Mears Place, Auburn, CA 95602 ▸ placer.ca.gov
Hidden Falls Regional Park is a whopping 1,200-acre park and offers 30 miles of multiple-use trails, two observation decks allowing close-up views of 30-foot waterfalls, picnic areas, and fishing access.
Why We Love It: In the park you really feel like you’re getting away from it all and can take on as much as your family is capable of hiking. We’re always fans of getting to a goal, and everyone loves getting to a goal as awesome as views of waterfalls! Make sure to print a map from the website before you go!
For the Young Ones (ages 0-10): Little ones will be blown away by the magnificence of the falls and will love the water access points along the trails. Our kids could spend hours throwing rocks into water!
For the Big Kids (ages 10+): There are SO many trails in this park! Big kids can plan an adventure entirely their own that is completely different than a hike for young ones. This makes Hidden Falls a fantastic location for your family to return to over the years as the family’s hiking skills grow!
Keep in Mind: While there is a good amount of parking, this park is extremely popular. The parking fills up fast and early and reservations are required on weekends, holidays, and some Fridays. Permits must be purchased using the online parking reservation system, available through the website.
MEET FELICIA KEMP &

We’re the Kemp family, and we love getting outdoors! Family Trail Time started in 2015 when friends and friends of friends started regularly reaching out, looking for nearby family-friendly hikes. With both parents working full-time outside of the home and three young kiddos, our months are about schoolwork, doctor appointments, and laundry; not exactly grand expeditions deep into forests and in faraway places. The Family Trail Time blog and Facebook and Instagram accounts are devoted to hitting the trails when and where a family can, the happiness of sharing nature as a family, and a hope to empower others to do the same.
Our family faced the unimaginable when our middle child was diagnosed with the terminal illness of Tay-Sachs disease and passed away in December 2019. Then, and now, we hike for Grayson and know that if we can find a way, most families can, too. We combine our love for hiking and fundraising for a cure by putting on our virtual 5k each March, Take A Hike Tay-Sachs for Cure Tay-Sachs Foundation.
Follow Family Trail Time on social media for local trail information and conditions, recommendations, organized group hikes, and how you can participate in our annual Take A Hike Tay-Sachs.

AN INTERVIEW WITH JACK & TRACEY EDWARDS

Jack and Tracey Edwards are two extraordinary Elk Grove residents whose outstanding contribution to the community has made them stand out as an inspiration to others. They are not new to community service. Jack and Tracey have been living and working in Elk Grove for 30+ years and are active with many local service organizations and charities including Elk Grove Lions Club, Elk Grove Food Bank Services, American Legion Elk Grove, The Strauss Festival, Elk Grove Youth Sports Foundation, Soroptimist International of Elk Grove and the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation. They also help many of the local service clubs and nonprofits with their online marketing and website development.
The couple was honored with the Elk Grove Citizen of the Year Award in 2020 for their tremendous efforts in giving back to the community through their involvement in many local service clubs, charities, and nonprofits. The Citizen of the Year Award is a 68-year-old tradition that honors an individual or a couple who contributes greatly to the Elk Grove community and exemplifies the meaning of giving. It is truly a community award.
Read on for an interview with Jack and Tracey to gain insight into their
experiences with community service and advice for current residents that are looking to get involved.
Why is it important for community members to actively participate in local service organizations?
T – Funding can only go so far. Connected communities are made of people who choose to get involved because they see a need and want to help fill it. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any community, and Elk Grove will become stronger as people work
together. There is truth in the expression, “Many hands make light work.” The median age of service club members is rising; we need to bring in members who can keep the passion flowing and continue doing good work in their community. Volunteering doesn’t take a lot of time; it just takes some heart. And everyone has that!
J – We create our community by participating in day-to-day activities that make it a place that we can call home. Volunteering with local organizations helps us create a place where we can raise our kids and grandkids, and where they can play sports and learn good sportsmanship, or be a Boy Scout or a Girl Scout and learn about our environment and what they can do to make it better. Together we can help create a place where veterans can get help as they transition back to civilian life, or where a retiree can get assistance. We can create a place where a person in need can get eyeglasses from the Lions Club or food from a local food bank. We can create a place where people can get to know their neighbors and make them feel welcome. All of that happens when you become a part of something bigger than yourself by volunteering with a local service club or nonprofit organization. You truly become a part of your community.
How has being so involved in giving back to the community impacted your life?
T – When we moved to Elk Grove over 30 years ago, the only local people we knew were soccer parents. When our sons aged out of soccer, we were both working for the State, which meant our friends were scattered around the city. Upon retirement, Jack became a REALTOR® and talked me into joining him, our circle of friends grew. But when I stopped being an agent my world got

smaller, so I volunteered at the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop and made some new friends. Then Jack suggested I attend a Soroptimist Elk Grove meeting. The women were so warm and friendly, and they all had a purpose, a focus. Their Dream programs and projects are all about providing women and girls with access to education and training opportunities. Volunteers can be as involved as they want to be. Volunteering there has enabled me to meet women around the world who have the same focus, and it allows me to bring ideas to share with my club and others. That led me to other volunteering opportunities like Elk Grove Food Bank, Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation, and more! I have a very full life and I love it!
J – By becoming involved with the various organizations in our community, we know that we have made a difference in the lives of our neighbors. I am a member of the

Elk Grove Lions Club and American Legion Post 55. Our Lions Club handles “traffic control” for the food bank’s annual turkey box pick-up event. The gratitude of the recipients helps me realize how lucky I am to be able to give back to my community. It fills my heart with love to know I play a small part in helping people connect to the resources they need and make a difference in the lives of those around me.
What is your advice for someone who wants to get involved but is not sure where to start?
T
– Ask yourself, What brings me joy? Helping people? Working with animals? Interacting with a specific segment of society? Once you figure that out, you can start inquiring about opportunities to bring your talents to an organization that will help you bring that same joy to your community. Perhaps your friend is involved with something you’d like to be a part of. If there are similar organizations, find out which one(s) meets your timeframe or

availability. Ask to attend a few meetings so you can see if you like their vibe. Just do it! It’s not painful – jump in with both feet! You’ll expand your world and help others at the same time. What a gift!
J- My first suggestion would be to talk with your friends who are already involved with a local nonprofit organization. Ask what they do and how you can help. If you don’t already know someone, I suggest that you look at LivingInElkGrove.com. I maintain this site and share links for over 50 local organizations under the Non-Profits tab. The local newspaper also lists several organizations asking for volunteers to help with local programs. Visit the organizations’ websites, check out their Facebook pages, and attend their meetings. Ask if you can volunteer at an event so you can get a feel for who they are and what they do. Your help is needed and wanted. Giving of your heart and time is the best gift of all, and it will fill your heart with joy in return.
“Leadership Elk Grove presented by the Elk Grove Chamber of Commerce encourages community involvement and leadership, and it develops future leaders to improve our local economy and community. If you want to get involved and make a difference in our community, start here.” -Sarah C.

Recently, our generous members also rallied together to raise and donate $9,000 in full support of the Albie Aware Breast Cancer Foundation—a testament to the power of collective giving.

Our staff volunteers at local high schools, organizes blood drives, and embodies our core values of community service. Looking ahead, we plan to establish a dedicated community relations position, emphasizing our ongoing commitment to corporate responsibility. Exciting initiatives are on the horizon, including supporting service members, first responders, and local medical professionals with holiday meals. At Valley Hi, we’re dedicated to making a positive impact in Elk Grove. -Scott Stubbs, General Manager/COO of Valley Hi Country Club
VALLEY OAK HOME APPLIANCE CENTER
At Valley Oak Home Appliance Center, we’re proud to support the Elk Grove community that has supported us for the past 35 years. We give back through initiatives like our Annual Food Drive event for the Elk Grove Food Bank, military and senior discounts, and years of sponsoring youth sports and fundraisers for many local non-profit organizations.

As the first woman Rotarian president, I have seen firsthand how leadership in service organizations like Rotary can strengthen community ties. Our family’s involvement with groups like Rotary and the CSD reflects our commitment to making Elk Grove a better place for all.
Looking ahead, we’re excited to engage even more with the community by hosting cooking demos, collaborating with local chefs and restaurants, and continuing our support for the many wonderful non-profit organizations in our community. Giving back has always been at the heart of what we do—it’s our way of thanking Elk Grove for 35 wonderful years.”
