Welcome to Sarasota County!
If you love live music, you’ve moved to the right place. The options for enjoying live music here are endless! From orchestras to ensembles, full bands to trios, duos to solo acts, we have it all!

LOCAL TIP

When the weather is cooler and you don’t mind a bit of a drive, a good, free place to go to see manatees is the Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach. -
Dana L.

My name is Alyssa, and I moved to Sarasota from New England 13 years ago. Music is my life, and moving here was the best decision I ever made. I am a studio manager and event coordinator at Music Compound. At Music Compound, our motto is to educate, inspire and collaborate. We offer music education for all ages. If you have been wanting to learn how to play an instrument or freshen up your skills, Music Compound is the place for you. We offer private music lessons and group classes for all interests and ages, including a New Horizons concert band for students over 50!
Music Compound, located at 775 Bell Rd, Sarasota, is a 3,000-square-foot venue where you can attend live music events or even host your own. Music Compound is always out in the community supporting local businesses and non-profit organizations and you can always find our members playing music, all over town and supporting each other. We host events of all kinds including National Family Day Celebrations, Back-to-School Bashes and Listening Room Concerts.
We also host events at The Bazaar located at 821 Apricot Ave., Sarasota. This unique indoor indie market houses more than two dozen artists showcasing and selling art, plants, collectibles, clothing and so much more. You will also find Hamlet’s Eatery, a food truck in the outdoor courtyard offering an equal variety of vegan and non-vegan options. The Bazaar hosts an outside market every third Saturday of the month with, of course, live music. The Bazaar is regularly open Thursday-Saturday, 10-3, and if you stop

in during the hours of 12-3, you might catch some of the area’s best solo acts like Music Compound instructor and Island Hoppers band member Paul Luther. He is a must-see. The Bazaar is a great place to spend an afternoon with friends or on your own. I always leave feeling so inspired. Music Compound and The Bazaar start my list of great places to catch live music in Sarasota.
Sarasota is like heaven when it comes to live music venues because there are so many great places, almost too many to list. Luckily, we have many great resources to help you find what you’re looking for. My two favorites are www.gotonight.com and The Ticket, the Sarasota Herald Tribune’s free, entertainment newspaper delivered all over, every Thursday, just in time to help you plan your weekend!
Mumbo Jumbo at JR's Old Packinghouse Cafe

If you are hungry for some food, to go with some live tunes, then head over to what I like to call the Fruitville 75 Music Row. You have plenty to choose from in this neighborhood. Start at right off of Fruitville Road at 19 East Rd., Sarasota, just east of I-75. Serving up some of Sarasota’s best BBQ and Southern-inspired fare including delicious fried chicken, Stottlemeyer’s offers live music seven days a week. Sunday is by far my favorite day to visit. Us locals like to call it Sunday Funday. on Sunday, live music starts at noon with New Orleans native Steve Junot. Stick around because from 4-7pm; you’ll hear one of my personal favorite bands in town, Kettle of Fish.

From Stottlemeyer’s, head west, just past I-75, and stop into JR’s 987 S. Packinghouse Rd., Sarasota, a local favorite for live music and the best Cuban sandwich around. Here you’ll find The Alvis Brothers legendary Monday night open mic, or maybe Pedro and Zoey, Steve Paradis or Frankie Lombardi on a Tuesday night. Every third Saturday, catch the dynamite Mumbo Jumbo band. If craft brews and smokin’ tunes is your idea of a good time, then, literally, across the street from the OPC is Big Top Live at 975 Cattlemen Rd. Every Sunday they host Blues and Brews with local and national blues legends RJ Howson and Damon Fowler. The fun at Big Top doesn’t just happen on Sundays though. Big Top Brewery is another great family-friendly venue in town offering

If you are looking for a more upscale dinner atmosphere, then on the corner of Lemon and Main in Downtown Sarasota is where you need to be. The menu is top-notch, and the
KETTLE OF FISH
RJ Howson
band’s equally great. Thursday through Saturday, you might catch Messenger, The Billy Rice or Memphis Rub Band, playing your favorite blues and old-school rock-and-roll classics.
If it’s Thursday and Reggae is what you’re looking for, head to The Gator Club to see Sarasota’s favorite Reggae band Jah Movement in one of Sarasota’s oldest buildings. This is sure to be a fun evening.
Siesta Key Village is the perfect spot to spend an afternoon enjoying live music. You are sure to meet many tourists but will run into locals too. It is an extremely popular spot amongst locals. You can spend some time on Siesta Key, America’s number-one beach, and then just walk a few feet to grab something to eat, put a daquiri in your hand, and let live music fill your ears. Here you will find solo artists, duos, trios, and full bands all within walking distance from each other featuring members from bands such as The Allman Brothers Band, Dickey Betts and Great Southern, Slash, Aerosmith and more. Every Sunday on the public beach you’ll find hundreds of Sarasota locals and mystics jamming, dancing and having fun at the famous Siesta Key drum circle.
Cross the bridge back to the downtown Sarasota waterfront and find O’Leary’s. This tiki-style restaurant bar is great for a quick bite to eat or drink and to watch the dolphins in the bay. O’Leary’s hosts live music on weekend afternoons and evenings.
Feel like getting on a boat for a sunset cruise complete with live tunes? Hop aboard LeBarge Cruise s, just a short walk over from O’leary’s, this unique vessel is a spectacular way to see Sarasota from the bay. Would you rather stay grounded for the sunset and dinner? Then walk a bit farther and you’ll find Marina Jack, another popular spot amongst locals. You can have dinner on the patio deck while enjoying some of Sarasota’s best musicians or head

inside for something a bit fancier. If you like classic-style piano bars, they have one inside. The Deep Six Lounge and Piano bar is like a scene out of Goodfellas.
If you are a live music fan, you moved to the right place. The options are endless. I look forward to meeting you on the dance floor!

WHAT TO DO WHEN THE
KIDS

“Mom, I’m bored. I have nothing to do. Where are we going today?” If you have ever heard these words then this article is for you. I have 3 kids and I have my go to places to take the kids when they are not in school. Summers are a blessing and a curse because you have to decide do I keep them home or do I send them to camp? I do a little of both to keep everyone happy and entertained. I am sharing my list of our go to places and camps that my family and friend’s families have been to that were great fun for the kids. You may find some of these work for you and some may not but at least you have a starting point.

CHILDREN’S FOUNTAIN AT BAYFRONT PARK
This fun splash park is located next to O’Leary’s Tiki Bar on Sarasota’s Bayfront just west of downtown. Open during the summer from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., this place is excellent for kids who want the fun of playing in the water on a hot summer day. Picnics in the park are a good addition to this activity.

LOCAL TIP

I-9 sports is super affordable. My son started with them when he was 3 and now he is 6. I liked it was not extremely competitive and they taught them the skills of each game and you also have opportunities to volunteer as a coach. A plus as a parent is the practice is before the game. My son has done the summer indoor soccer camp and the football and soccer leagues during the school year and he loved them. - Angie O.

MARIE SELBY BOTANICAL GARDENS
These Botanical Gardens are a 15-acre botanical garden. The Rainforest Garden addition gives children a chance to learn about plants and animal inhabitants of the rainforest. 1534 Mound St, Sarasota, FL 34236 941-366-5731 / selby.org

Living Healthy

Most of us live in Sarasota for the lifestyle. We love the outdoors, we love being active, and we clearly love sunshine. While sunshine and warm weather are everywhere, it’s almost overwhelming trying to determine the best places and hotspots to maintain that active lifestyle.
By: Heather Hackett-Kaufman
I’ve lived in Sarasota for 16 years. At this point, I definitely consider myself a local. In addition to helping others achieve their potential through fitness and nutrition, I also love showing people how to incorporate some of Sarasota’s incredible amenities into their wellness journey. If you’re not as active as you’d like to be due to injuries or aches and pains, feel free to visit us at Sarasota Sports Medicine, we can help get you back in the game!

Drum Circle, there are endless options for those looking to train on our award-winning beaches. Also, walking the beach is not only a wonderful workout, but the level of sanity and peace it provides contributes to overall wellness.
LOCAL TIP
First and foremost, do yourself a favor and walk the bridge. Walking the Ringling bridge, either by yourself or with friends, is an absolute favorite for locals. There’s a definite incline, so it’s a bit of a challenge, but it also happens to be the only hill we have, (next to Celery Fields). Whether you go for the spectacular view, dolphin watching, or just to get your daily dose of exercise and sunshine, there’s always a breeze and smiling faces along the way.
Then there’s the beach! From yoga and personal training to HIIT training, swimming, and dancing at the

My family loves biking to Rothenbach Park. There are beautiful winding, shaded trails for walking and biking toward the back of the park, and there are several playgrounds in the front, for different ages and even fitness levels. There are also picnic facilities and restrooms. Definitely bring water with you and wear sunscreen because unless you’re in the back there’s not too much shade, but it’s worth it! - Alison S.

Parks

If you’re looking for distance and beautiful scenery, Legacy Trail is incredible. The Legacy Trail is a 12.5mile multi-use recreational trail in Sarasota County, located between Sarasota near Palmer Ranch and Venice. The rail trail is a portion of a former Seminole Gulf Railway corridor, so it provides plenty of space and beautiful terrain. The Legacy Trail will also expand by an additional 7.9 miles in the next two years.

Nathan Benderson Park offers a 3.4 mile path surrounding one of the top rowing lakes in the world. In addition to rowing, you can also fish, boat, kayak, and paddleboard on the water. On a side note, there isn’t any shade around the track, so please wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water.
Payne Park. Located downtown, Payne Park offers a skate park for kids, a tennis center, huge circus-themed playground for the kiddos, and a beautiful little bistro called, “Cafe in the Park”. The walking trail is often used for charity walks as it’s a beautiful little walk with an option to walk and ride on concrete paths or cinders.
Bayfront Park is located on the water, so hands down, it’s one of the most spectacular parks we have. In addition to being very dog friendly, they also have a small fountain park for kids, and O’Leary’s Tiki Bar, which is a tourist favorite. In addition to offering lunch, drinks, and dinner, they also offer coffee and breakfast for the early risers.
Arlington Park and Aquatic Complex Arlington Park is a buried treasure. If you know it’s there, you’ve probably watched the locals receive swim lessons and laughed at the funny looking Muscovy ducks on the bridge. Arlington Park offers residents and visitors a 50-meter lap pool, 25-yard instructional pool, outdoor basketball courts, tennis courts, playground, outdoor fitness gym, ½-mile walking trail, and dog park. In addition, it’s gorgeous, insanely peaceful, and you can’t help but get lost in the serenity.
Myakka State Park is a mecca for Florida wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re looking to bike, hike, bird watch, horseback ride, fish, camp, take a canoe ride, or all the above, Myakka State Park has you covered. Plan on a day trip with the family or invite some friends to join the fun. Yes, they really offer everything!
Celery Fields. As you’ve noticed, Florida’s terrain is as flat as it gets, therefore, Celery Fields is one of two options offering any sort of hill. It’s always packed with fitness enthusiasts, triathletes, kids, and individuals looking to increase their endurance level.
Urfer Park is located at Bee Ridge and Honore. It also has a massive playground for kids and training stations throughout the trail, which is great for anyone wanting to do a little HIIT Training (High Intensity Interval Training).

Kayaking
Whether you have your own kayak, want to rent one, or take a tour with friends in the mangrove tunnels, Sarasota has plenty of options. If you’ve just moved here and want to do something fun with a small group, talk to a tour guide and schedule one of the most fun and enjoyable group workouts you’ll ever have.

Stand up

Paddleboarding

Stand up Paddleboarding, or SUP, is a wonderful exercise and tremendous for building core strength. It also happens to be one of the coolest things to do in the gulf. If you’re looking to take a tour or a lesson, there are many companies here to help you out. Regardless of your skill level, you’re bound to have a great time! Also, if happen to see a manatee floating beneath you, don’t worry, they’re friendly.
Tennis enthusiasts, we have plenty of options for you! The Resort at Longboat Key Club was recognized by Tennis Magazine as the “Number One Tennis Resort on the Gulf Coast of Florida” and one of the “Top Ten Tennis Resorts in America”. The Cedars Tennis Resort on Longboat Key is another option to play at an exclusive destination. Sarasota Sports Club offers another option as does Payne Park Tennis Center, Bayfront Park, Colonial Oaks, Fruitville Park, and Longwood Park.
Regardless of your fitness level, I simply recommend you enjoy the sunshine and do one of my favorite things, which is walk around Main Street in downtown. You’ll learn familiar faces, meet locals, find your favorite local hot spot, and experience the Sarasota culture I’ve grown to love.
