CHANDLER

EXP. 6/30/2025.

Created by the Phoenix-based father and son duo, Noe “Such Styles” Baez and Champ, this mural outside SanTan Brewing Company is a bold expression of their street art style. Drawing inspiration from Noe’s roots in the New York street art scene, this piece blends their mastery of aerosol techniques with a portrayal of Chandler’s landscape and culture, reflecting both the city’s history and growth.
The mural features desert plants, iconic elements like the San Marcos Hotel, and a bright blue sky, seamlessly blending urban energy with the natural beauty of the area. It also echoes the brewery’s interior, with visual representations of the beer towers that stand inside SanTan Brewing Company, tying the artwork to its location.
Located on the west exterior wall of the brewery, this mural captures Chandler’s unique mix of urban and desert landscapes. It adds to downtown’s vibrant art scene, where commissioned murals and public art enhance the community’s creative identity.
For anyone exploring Downtown Chandler, this mural offers a perfect chance to experience the city’s artistic spirit, making it a standout attraction for both visitors and locals.

Dr. A.J. Chandler started the 18,000-acre Chandler Ranch as an agricultural community. He developed a series of irrigation canals, attracting farmers who raised cattle, sheep, ostriches and, of course, cotton. Families like the Dobsons have farmed in and around Chandler for decades.
Chandler has recently seen a rise in smaller-scale family farming. What used to be done on hundreds or thousands of acres must now be done on one or two acres.
Feeding our community is integral to a prosperous future, where good food and good farming are synonymous. Fortunately, there are many local producers, chefs, farmers, and brewers working to build the good food community here in our city.

Did you know you can have an urban garden year-round in the Phoenix Metro area? A comprehensive calendar for planting in Maricopa County can be found at arizona.edu. – Shannon P.

FLOURISHING WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Hailing from four-season hometownsShelly, originally from Livonia, Michigan, and Raj, from Greenville, South Carolina - our featured couple has embraced Chandler as their home, finding it the perfect place to raise their children, Maguire and Blakely. Shelly fondly recalls Michigan’s summers spent boating on lakes and fall visits to apple orchards and cider mills. Raj reflects on Greenville’s southern charm, the bustling downtown area of Reedy River, and lush greenery—a stark contrast to Arizona’s desert landscape. Though they cherish their roots, the Chands have come to love Chandler’s family-friendly atmosphere, central location, and vibrant community.

Images by Azula Raun Photography

Among other benefits, Chandler’s proximity to Raj’s job in north Scottsdale and the airport made it an ideal choice. In just 20 minutes, they can be in several key areas of the Valley, which is really convenient for the family.
The Chands enjoy their neighborhood’s strong sense of community. Shelly shares a unique holiday tradition: “One super fun thing my neighborhood does is organize a progressive Christmas dinner. This is an adult-only event where each house supplies small bites and a specialty cocktail. It’s especially fun to see everyone’s decorated houses during the holidays!” She also enjoys regular walks around Centennial Park with friends, just half a mile from their homes.
Around Chandler, the family frequents local spots like Pita Jungle for healthy

meals, Kodo Sushi, and Tryst Cafe for brunch. At High Tide, the parents savor seafood while the kids indulge in their favorite chicken nuggets in town. When Shelly and Raj head out for the evening, they love exploring Downtown Chandler, starting with appetizers at Black Sheep and enjoying live music at The Stillery. “I didn’t expect Chandler to grow at such a rapid rate! When we first moved to South Chandler, there wasn’t a ton out here. Since moving, they’ve already had to widen the roads, and traffic can be heavy! But we’ve gained a lot of new restaurants, so we really don’t need to leave the city for any reason,” Shelly adds.
For their kids, Chandler is full of fun activities. Maguire and Blakely enjoy the trampoline park at Sky Zone, movies at Harkins Theatres, and camps at The Grove. Blakely, a passionate dancer, takes classes at Dance Connection 2, while Maguire plays baseball for Chandler National Little League.
Shelly encourages newcomers to explore Chandler’s festivals and farmers’ markets. “Our weather is amazing seven months out of the year. Get outside and enjoy it!” she advises. The family also loves staycations at The Westin Kierland Resort and Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, as well as winter trips up north, including The North Pole Experience in Flagstaff and the Polar Express in Williams. “As a couple, we had so much fun wine tasting in Cottonwood!”

When it came to opening her business, Shelly and her partner, Kendra Aragon, chose Chandler for its familiar and convenient location. “We are so easy to get to, no matter what direction you’re coming from!” Shelly explains. “Kendra and I have always worked in Chandler. We love the city and felt like the market needed a hair salon like ours! At Bronde, we don’t specialize in one area and are extremely well-rounded, making us a great fit for the diversity of Chandler.” Bronde Blvd Salon has rapidly gained popularity among locals, with numerous neighbors of Shelly becoming not just clients but also cherished friends.

FOR THE
By Dr, Andrea Stickland, DVM

Andrea Stickland, DVM, founder and lead veterinarian at Animal Medical Center of Chandler (AMC of C)
Hello, and welcome to the wonderful city of Chandler. You have come to a region blessed with attentive pet owners. Because we have a population of great pet owners, our risk for many common infectious diseases is much lower here than other places in the United States.
However, when people relocate to the Phoenix area, they’re always curious about a very special fungus that we have in this state. This fungus causes an infection called Valley Fever, also known as Coccidioidomycosis. This fungus lives in the desert soil and dries into fragile strands of cells that break off into small spores. These spores are present in the dust and in the air. Once an animal or human inhale the spores, these spores grow into spherules. These spherules can rupture and release many new endospores which go on to spread infection through the lungs. If the pet’s immune system does not destroy the endospores, the infection is able to spread throughout the lungs or to other portions of the body. This pet now has Valley Fever.
Seventy percent of dogs that inhale these spores mount a sufficient immune response and clear the infection on their own. However, if their immune system cannot control the infection, some signs you may see include lethargy, fever, cough (appears similar to Kennel Cough), lack of appetite, weight loss, seizures, and even limping.
Cats tend to be much hardier with their immune response to Valley Fever. On average, for every 50 dogs infected, there will be one cat infected. To decrease exposure to the fungus that causes Valley Fever, stay indoors during wind storms, prevent digging behavior, avoid areas of heavy construction, and stay clear of sniffing rodent holes. However, being diligent with these activities does not guarantee protection from infection.
Diagnosing this infection in your pet usually involves running blood work and performing radiographs. Should your pet contract Valley Fever, treatment consists of long-term therapy with an anti-fungal medication ranging on average from six to 12 months, but treatment may be longer depending on the severity of the disease and immune response of the pet. Should your pet begin to show signs of illness that you suspect could be Valley Fever, it’s important to contact your veterinarian right away as prompt diagnosis and treatment is crucial for a successful outcome.

FRIENDLY
If you just experienced a relocation with cats in tow, we realize that they were likely one of the more challenging aspects of your move. With a natural disposition to become stressed when they’re removed from the comfort of their homes, they can have a tough time in transit and are known to rebel when settling into a new space.
Post move, don’t let the prospect of returning to the cat carrier prevent you from getting your pet the healthcare and services they need. By finding the right people and the proper places for feline care, you can effectively de-stress the whole household while providing the essentials for your adored pet.
We’re fortunate in Chandler to have businesses that go the extra mile to make cats (and their owners) as comfortable and calm as possible. With their expertise, these professionals demonstrate their understanding of the unique needs of cats.

For example, Animal Medical Center of Chandler places each cat patient in a separate room upon arrival, preventing anxiety-causing noise and stimulation. Their gentle, slow approach makes for a more peaceful veterinary experience, increasing the likelihood of annual exams and enhancing overall wellness.
With your support, and the assistance of local specialists, your cat will come to accept and love their new territory. Although your feline friend will never admit it, change can be good.

Karen Self of Chandler’s Seton Catholic Preparatory holds the title of the winningest coach in Arizona girls’ basketball history. As a player, she earned recognition as a four-year starter for ASU’s women’s basketball team before transitioning into coaching. In 1992, she took the reins at Seton, and just a few years later, her leadership turned the program into a powerhouse of consecutive wins. In 2022, Self was inducted into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame alongside Cardinals legend Larry Fitzgerald. To honor her extraordinary contributions, Seton Catholic named its court after Karen, celebrating her remarkable achievements and unwavering dedication to the program.

FLOURISHES IN CHANDLER
DO YOU HAVE THE TIME NEEDED TO LIVE A HEALTHIER LIFE?
Living in beautiful Chandler, Arizona, we enjoy nine months of weather that allow us to be active indoors or out. For the other three months, we can take advantage of health club amenities, which often include nutrition and recovery options, along with activities for the entire family. And all we need is to spend 2.5 hours per week focusing on this healthy lifestyle to increase our quality of life. Yes, you read that correctly. Does this sound too good to be true? Hear me out.
We’re all aware of the many benefits of regular exercise and a balanced diet, including better
weight management, more energy, leaner body (less fat mass, more muscle mass), improvement in movement, enhanced stress management, decreased heart disease, feeling and looking better. But many of us think that you have to spend grueling hours in the gym to become an active person and reap its rewards. The great news for all of us is that it only takes 2.5 hours in moderate exertion (i.e. a brisk walk with the family) to be active and reap the many health benefits that come with it. That’s only 50 minutes three times a week, or 21 minutes daily. And, when you’re active, all those benefits collectively will increase your quality of life.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS AND ADVICE THAT WE CAN ALL USE TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE:
▸ PLAN.
As with any goal, planning is the key to success. Plan when and where you’re going to get those 150 minutes. Add them to your calendar like you would a doctor’s appointment. Got a class in the gym that you just love? Add it to your calendar. Take advantage of our Arizona winter weather and go for a hike at the Veterans Oasis Park. Add it to your calendar.
▸ FIND YOURSELF A WORKOUT PARTNER OR A GROUP THAT ENJOYS THE SAME ACTIVITIES AS YOU. The more connections you have at a place, the more comfortable, familiar, and easier it will be to go back.
▸ GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED. Have them choose a physical activity they like, such as basketball, hiking or swimming. You get to spend some time together and get those minutes in at the same time. Plus, you’re passing on a good habit.
▸ AT A LOSS AND DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START? HIRE A CERTIFIED TRAINER. A trainer can write a program for you, so you know exactly what to do when you get in the gym.
▸ REMEMBER TO INCORPORATE STRETCHING, MASSAGE, AND MEDITATION. These activities contribute to recovery, which is beneficial to both mental and physical health.

We only live once. So, we might as well take advantage of our abilities and the beautiful place we call home in Chandler. Get those 150 minutes in weekly, and get yourself a higher quality of life.

You will find everything you need in less than 10 miles from your home.

care taking you

Welcome to Chandler, a city filled with top-tier wellness and beauty practitioners. These local professionals offer the experience of a vacation in your own hometown, delivering a personalized retreat with stunning results to boot. Our desert climate may require a bit of adaptation, but once you connect with the trusted local experts and take note of a few tips, you’ll have a holistic plan of care that will have you looking good and feeling great in no time.
First, hydration is an ongoing essential. Even in the winter, you need a minimum of half your body weight in ounces of water. For example, a 140-pound person requires at least 70 ounces per day. Dehydration can take you down a road to deep wrinkles, flakey skin, and a cranky attitude.
Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before heading out. Even in the car or under shade, an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended. Although there are many benefits to our year-round outdoor lifestyle, it carries the risk of increased sun exposure. Over time, damage from UVA and UVB rays build up, and sun-damaged skin shows symptoms of aging with increased redness, wrinkles, and spots.
Be sure to use a moisturizer day and night. When you sleep, your skin can

repair without interruption, a prime time to hydrate and plump with ingredient-rich care. In addition to using quality products, monthly facials and twicea-year chemical peels do wonders for cleansing and rejuvenation.
For cosmetic maintenance, Botox and fillers continue to be popular, highly customizable options. Injectables are also widely used as a preventative measure to treat wrinkles before they develop.
Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s important. So, give one of Chandler’s top-rated beauty experts a try. We look forward to customizing our services just for you and sharing our industry and Arizona expertise.

I’m an introspective artist, and I create my artwork out of my home studio here in Chandler. As a local artist who’s done work for the city, I am plugged into the local art scene.
I love the new Chandler. It’s definitely not the same city I moved to 15 years ago. Downtown has been transformed into a cultural hotspot. It’s vibrant with great restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and art.
If you’re looking to feed your creativity, our city has Vision Gallery, a beautiful space that showcases local and national artists, providing diversity and cultural aesthetics to Downtown Chandler.
If you venture out a bit, Olney Gallery at Trinity Cathedral in Phoenix is a great art space, and while you’re there, be sure to check out 9 The Gallery as well.
Chandler is becoming the place to be for many things, events, and people. Fine art festivals are beginning to recognize Chandler for its art scene and want to be part of the vision. This year, the award-winning Thunderbird Artists put on their first Fine Art and Wine Festival in Downtown Chandler. As a participating artist, it was a pleasure to meet and connect with my Chandler neighbors.
Driving through the redeveloped parts of Chandler and seeing the murals, the sculptural pieces created by local artists, the buildings lit with different colored lights at night, or the creative art installations along the street on utility boxes (one of which is mine), makes me smile and transports me to a happy place. It makes me proud to live and work in such a creative and up-and-coming city.
The Vision Gallery and Gallery at CCA are home to two of Arizona’s three Art-o-Mat® vending machines. These retired cigarette vending machines have been repurposed to sell tiny boxes of art for $5. If you’re an artist and would like to submit art for consideration, please visit ArtOMat.org/guidelines. These refurbished machines are in locations across the globe.

THE EARLY YEARS OF CHANDLER
By Nate Meyers

Dr. Alexander J. Chandler
Town founder Dr. Alexander J. Chandler was a Canadian by birth and veterinarian by training. Upon his 1887 arrival in Arizona, he began to acquire land and water rights through a series of shady and sometimes downright fraudulent deals. On May 16, 1912, he opened an office to sell land and form a town.
Centered around a landscaped park ringed with beautiful buildings and the luxurious San Marcos Hotel, the town of Chandler sprung from agricultural roots into the high tech, rapidly expanding, modern city of today.

San Marcos Hotel
The crown jewel of Dr. Chandler’s desert empire was the San Marcos Hotel. Designed by renowned architect Arthur Burnet Benton, the luxurious Mission Revival-style hotel featured 35 guest rooms, each with its own bathroom and telephone line. The entire building was electrified. The San Marcos attracted some of the wealthiest people in the country to spend their winters in Chandler, where they could participate in nightly card games, regular costume parties, golf, polo, swimming, horseback riding, and afternoon drives through the desert.

A Master Planned Community
Chandler was a master-planned community from the start. The original town plan, drawn in December 1911, five months before the town was founded, called for an orderly street grid, laid out north to south and east to west. In one of the earliest examples of municipal zoning, colors on the plan denoted commercial districts, industrial areas, high-end residential, middle class, and low-income neighborhoods. The east-west streets were named for American cities, while the northsouth streets were named for states.

Tumbleweed Tree
In 1957, Chandler organized a committee to plan new holiday ornaments for the town. That year, the town rang in the holidays with large cotton boll wreaths on every light pole, a Western Christmas scene, a nativity scene, and an animated Santa in the downtown park. Little noticed at the time was a Christmas tree made from tumbleweeds. The tree became an annual tradition, and soon enough, Chandler was boasting of its unique holiday decoration. Today the tumbleweed tree is still the centerpiece of Chandler’s holiday celebrations.

Frank Lloyd Wright
Bashas’
Arizona’s favorite hometown grocer got its start in Chandler. Lebanese immigrants Najeeb and Najeeby Basha opened a dry goods store in Chandler in 1920. Twelve years later, their sons, Ike and Eddie, opened the first Bashas’ grocery on the former Goodyear ranch south of Chandler (today’s Ocotillo). Later, Bashas’ first supermarket opened in Downtown Chandler at Commonwealth and Arizona Place in the early 1950s. Today, the chain has over 100 stores, and the corporate headquarters remain in Chandler, in the same building that the first Bashas’ occupied back in 1932.

Ostriches
Ostrich feathers were all the rage in fashion at the turn of the 20th century. As a consequence, feathers could be harvested and sold for hundreds of dollars per pound. Dr. Chandler jumped on the profitable trend by purchasing a number of the big birds in 1905 and continued to grow his flock for over a decade. But fashions change, and after World War I ostrich feathers fell out of favor. Additionally, ostriches were susceptible to Spanish influenza, and many of the birds died in the 1918 pandemic. Despite this, Dr. Chandler kept a large stash of feathers stored in the basement of the San Marcos Hotel for decades in the hopes that they would come back into style and he could make a fortune.
World-famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright struck up a friendship with Dr. Chandler in 1928. Chandler had an idea for a grand resort in the South Mountain foothills and thought Wright was the man to design it. Wright was impressed by Dr. Chandler and his vision and promptly built a camp near the location of the proposed resort where he and his draftsmen set about designing the San Marcos in the Desert. Though the resort was never built, Wright and Chandler continued to work together. Ultimately, they planned at least a dozen projects in Chandler, though only two came to fruition: the desert camp and a camp in Chandler Heights. Wright’s architecture school spent two winters in Chandler prior to moving to Scottsdale and being named Taliesin West.

Alternative Energy
Dr. Chandler was an early believer in exploring alternative energy sources. When he excavated his canal system in the 1890s, he built a hydroelectric powerplant on one of the canals where it dropped off the mesa between Mesa and Tempe. That plant supplied all the electricity for both Mesa and Chandler in the 1910s. Dr. Chandler was the first person to purchase a commercially available solar motor in 1905. The solar motor used a massive mirror display to focus heat on a boiler, and the steam produced powered a well pump. Unfortunately, a few days after the solar motor was installed, a monsoon storm smashed the mirrors, and Dr. Chandler chose not to have it repaired.

Williams Air Force Base
The history of Chandler was forever changed when the United States Army Air Corps opened a training base just eight miles east of town. What would soon become Williams Air Force Base opened just before the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. During World War II, more than 10,000 pilots earned their wings at the base. During the Cold War, it was a major base for jet pilot training. Chandler and Williams had a close relationship. The base had a Chandler address, and the Air Force issued payroll through Chandler banks. The local USO was located in Downtown Chandler. The base closed in 1993, and today it’s the home of Mesa Gateway Airport.

FUN FACT
Although our city is relatively young and growing, we’ve had quite a few history-making residents call Chandler home. Professional baseball player Cody Bellinger went to Hamilton High School, and 25 years before fighting Muhammad Ali for the title of Heavyweight Champion of the World, Zora Folley moved to Chandler with his family when he was 9.
Silicon Desert
From the beginning, Chandler’s early economy was tied to agriculture and tourism, but that began to change in 1967 with the arrival of Rogers Corporation’s circuit systems division. Rogers’ arrival marked the beginning of Chandler’s development as a high tech community. Intel, today Chandler’s largest employer, arrived in town in 1980, and the rest is history. Tech companies like Waymo (Google’s self-driving car initiative), PayPal, Microchip, and Northrup Grumman call Chandler home, making this the Silicon Desert.

Golf
One of Arizona’s most popular activities is also an important piece of Chandler history. Golf has been played in the Valley for over a hundred years. The earliest Arizona courses were carved out of the desert, and the greens were made from sand and cottonseed oil. Dr. Chandler changed all of that when he opened the San Marcos Hotel golf course in 1913. Not only did his new golf course feature grassy greens, the entire course was planted with grass and featured an underground irrigation system complete with sprinklers, making the San Marcos golf course the state’s first grass course.

Year-round, Chandler is home to an array of world-class annual events. Take a look, mark your calendar, and get ready to join the fun at some of the most popular events in the area.

We are a proud military family with generations of veterans, and our grandson is currently serving in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Both of my parents served in the Army Air Forces during WWII. My father was in Europe with the 8th division and later recalled for Korea. My mother was in New Guinea with the Far East Air Service Command. After the war, we were stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada and later moved to Lackland Air Force Base in Texas.
In 1968, my husband, Lonnie Cruse, enlisted in the Army. He served in Vietnam with the 25th Infantry in Củ Chi. Lonnie was wounded and received the Purple Heart.
When Lonnie and I are out to eat and see a veteran, or someone active in the military who’s proudly displaying their service, we like to pay their tab. I also enjoy talking with them about military museums and how they can share their experiences in the armed forces.
We show our support by flying the American flag throughout the year, and we line our street with flags on Veterans Day. Lonnie and I also participate in honoring fallen veterans with memorial wreaths. You can recognize veterans by supporting the Greenlight a Vet Campaign – just change out one porch light bulb to green as a symbol of appreciation.
